My aunt worked at Paramount studios when I was a teenager and I went to work with her one day. I was with her in her office eating lunch and in walks Richard Dreyfuss. He said hello to my aunt and we shook hands and introduced ourselves. He was writing a script so he read some lines. It was hilarious stuff. It was a highlight of my teenage years but I always regretted being starstruck and not asking more questions.

@@jessewoody5772 The OP's point went right over your head. The neighbour is not the "other" he was referring to; the "other" is some group of people that is not part of your immediate community, and whom certain politicians believe they can utilize to their advantage by falsely vilifying them in order to sow paranoia in their base. Re. your question, if your neighbour is a total asshole then that's a personal problem that you deal with on an individual level. But that has nothing to do with civics and our lost understanding of what it takes to make a society function and why its functioning is critical to the survival and wellbeing of every one of us.

I agree. I’m 44, and even in my own generation when I was growing up, I don’t feel that I learned remotely enough about civics, as well as many other things, like about other cultures, health and things like nutrition, exercise, or honest facts about reproduction. Thankfully I had good parents, I’ve largely been self-aware of my own ignorance about some of these things, and have tried in my adult life to educate myself, live an active healthy life, etc. But a society is only as good as its people. And education is the foundation of a great society and people. I don’t mean to point blame completely at the education system in the U.S. There are lots of VERY dedicated and hardworking educators in our country who don’t get nearly their due or the pay they deserve. But we need to do better. I think that we used to too. At many of our public schools, teachers and schools used to be more like professors and colleges. Students used to learn a wider array of things to live a balanced life. Not as much today I don’t think. But kids are also only in school for part of the day. It’s parents’ responsibility to also teach their kids beyond school. That also includes being respectful, and having good habits and manners. I’m pretty amazed at the ways that some kids today act. I saw a group of kids who were maybe 7-8 years old climbing on an outdoor sculpture, that was surrounded by no fewer than four signs saying not to climb on it. I found one of their mothers nearby, asked if any of those were her kids, and when she said yes I pointed out the signs. She just shrugged at me and let them continue what they were doing. I didn’t know what to even say. I wasn’t about to grab someone else’s child by the arm and stop them. But parenting is something people need to be better with too. It’s a big responsibility and you have to be willing to take on the burden of being a teacher for them too.

I think the latter is also a problem. I truly believe in general sense that it takes a village to raise a person. An issue in our society is that we've focused blindly on the concept of core family that we've neglected community and for a while it worked, the cultural ferment of pre-consumerist society hung on into the 80s and then dissipated as internet slowly creeped into our society and made our lives even more isolated and disconnected. It is good to note that the transformative aspects of modern society are unprecented and I wouldn't even expect a more intelligent spieces to handle them better. We're on uncharted waters. God, I hope we dont perish by it.

He's right. Nothing is free in this life. Our relatives have sacrificed their lives so we can say our minds and hearts. Pray how we want. Look the way we want. Marry who we want. How can we screw it up do bad ? I think we need to get back to the basics without abandoning anyone along the way.

Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪, I come from a Country that had 0.5% foreign born in 1996 to 20% foreign born by 2022 and with 17% of those born in Ireland living abroad. Our population is being replaced and Mr Dreyfuss is correct about civics, if those born here don't feel any obligation towards defending and protecting their society ,how do you expect those coming in to. Start by protecting the family instead of eroding it 🙏🇮🇪

For anyone who knows what the forefathers suffered, who's stood in the places they stood and heard the echo of their words, their ideals, it's a travesty what's become of the United States. I'd also mention that referring to oneself in the third person would indicate a psychological slipper slope.

Frank Zappa said much the same thing in 1991 to SPIN magazine.
"One of the things that was taken out of the curriculum was civics. Civics was a class that used to be required before you could graduate from high school. You were taught what was in the U.S. Constitution. And after all the student rebellions in the '60s, civics was banished from the student curriculum and was replaced by something called social studies. Here we live in a country that has a fabulous constitution and all these guarantees, a contract between the citizens and the government - nobody knows what's in it. It's one of the best kept secrets. And so, if you don't know what your rights are, how can you stand up for them? And furthermore, if you don't know what is in that document, how can you care if someone is shredding it?"

As a nation we have many things in places that we identify with and resources that have kept our nation secure but we have a problem trying differentiate between defending civil rights and our national security. My believe is clear, I’m against anything and anyone that do anything that put at risk our national security, whether it’s to questioning the process of our constitutional procedures or to agitate or act in ways where the people life are in dangers. We must put our national security above personal interest and agenda.

This is the type of individual, along with many others, who want only the best for their country and it's people. It's his/their thinking and desire, that Americans today should be listening to, and making efforts to put the country back on track as a great country and a super power, if not, the consequences for the country and the world, will be dire.
