- Presenting Half-Life 21.
Starting back in the summer of 2010, the estimated time for this run was thought to be roughly 27 minutes. However, after almost four years of painstaking planning, theorycrafting and execution, we have arrived at our final time, smashing all of our wildest expectations.
Not only do we owe this new world-record time to all the new tricks we've discovered, the new routes we've found and the new ways we've
learned to manipulate the game. A lot of the improvement from the first estimation and the previous world record (29 minutes, 41 seconds)
comes from the very hard work and countless hours put into perfecting each and every segment, no matter how short or trivial. This run has
truly been an endurance test for everyone involved, and we're extremely happy to finally be able to share it with you.

Technical details:
* This run sets the new world record for a segmented speedrun of Half-Life on Hard difficulty with an improvement of 9 minutes. (29:41 » 20:41).
* Runners, in order of total amount of segments: quadrazid, CRASH FORT, coolkid, pineapple, YaLTeR, Spider-Waffle, FELip.
* The total amount of segments is 317, 249 of which are shorter than 5 seconds.
* 107 saves/segments was made only to cause and abuse save glitches. 53 of those being at Nihilanth.
* This run is heavily scripted using the in-game console, the most widely used scripts are jump spam, duck spam, 180º turn for gauss boost and precise use-key actions.
* To use the better demo functionality and the support of higher FPS values in the Steam version, a mod have been made to restore the gameplay to the way it was before the anti-bhop patch back in 2001. Yes, that's usually when you die ^^. Though there are several triggers that overlap. One of them is a trigger_hurt that is supposed to kill you. However that trigger can only apply damage in certain invervals. It's a short interval though. What he does is shooting a hornet from the hornet gun into the trigger just before he touches it. So the trigger kills the hornet and the player doesn't get damage. The trigger_teleport is just located below that. You are teleported into a small level transition chamber (with those flashing green walls) where you wait for the level transition. It's actually luck that they just rely on the trigger hurt to kill you and that the teleport trigger is always active. They could have turned it off and only activate it when the sequence is complete like it's done in many other places. But that's what professional speedrunning is about. Finding all the things in a map and the game itsel that you can potentially exploit in some way. Bunny hopping, circle jumping, grenade boosts, gauss-boosts, save glitches, AI glitches, ... everything is on the table.

I like to believe this is how Half Life played out canonically; Freeman took one step out of the tram, thought to himself "fuck this", and immediately started flying all around the facility, blowing stuff up and saved the world from an alien invasion before anyone even knew one was happening.

@@soyb3anpi :D Though the HP don't really matter at this point. The trigger_hurt does 10k demage every half a second. He only gets past it because of the hornet he fires into the trigger just before touching it himself. Since the trigger has a cooldown of half a second, the player can fall through and touch the teleport trigger before getting damage.

Zachariah Shaver all doors in the game give you -1 damage when stuck in its hinges. For whatever reason, the door Quadrazid manipulates to gets 4000 health is the ONLY door in the entire game that gives you +1 health instead of -1 health. Quad manipulated the AI of the HECU soldier to somehow open the door, gets stuck on his body, and voila. Infinite health.
@@Gideon_the_Seraph There is one more door that also do this earlier on this same map - where you find the security guard that is supposed to open these doors. He also increases his framerate in order for the ticks that give you health to be faster.

Why did the wall give it health?
Door is programmed incorrectly - when it closes on you, it is supposed to deal one damage, per tick/frame.
BUT this door is glitched and instead of dealing 1 damage, it does -1 damage, healing the person stuck in it. By maxing your FPS, and thus, the number of ticks the game can register the fact you're stuck in the door and taking 'damage', you can quickly boost your HP to very high numbers.

@@natsoy1786probably an oversight done by valve, they most likely meant to do 1 damage but i guess they thought negative number = damage or smth
@@ThatSmartUA-camUserthere is a theory that the door(s, there is another door with the same properties) was set to deal -1 hp damage because the old barney ai would get stuck in these specific doors frequently and die. as a result, they set it to -1 hp as a quick fix, or for debugging, but forgot to set it to a better number like 0 before release
