  • Famed American designer and architect Charles Eames once said, "The details are not the details. They make the design." And when you see the Rock Island Armory 5.0E, you'll understand exactly what he meant. Watch as Roy Huntington offers a look at the features behind why the RIA 5.0E puts the "E" in "Enhanced."

Some will complain because it doesnt have all the fancy colored barrels & grips but is plain black that it isnt worth the price. When you look at the features & watch the smoothness with lower recoil its well worth it. Just because I cant afford one doesnt mean its not worth it!! I would love to run one. Engineering!!! 👍💥

That is an innovative design of a 9mm.

When Martin Tuason first introduced this gun, I was fascinated by the innovative, thinking out of the box design. I still am. When he promised they would keep the price under $1000, I was all in, waiting for the gun, out of stock at the time, to get back on the shelves. When it finally did, the price had quite literally doubled, not only breaking Mr. Tuasons' promise but putting it out of range for what I was willing to spend for a gun of this class. Why the price increase? Were there issues with the original design? We'll likely never know.
I might still be in though, if it were introduced in a more effective/powerful caliber. Why chamber a totally new design for a cartridge that was introduced in 1901, based on cartridges that go all the way back to the 1880's? Why not a 40 S&W? A 357 Sig? A 45 ACP? Maybe even a 10mm? I can already hear the 'critic-birds' chirping that the 9mm is the world's most popular handgun cartridge. It certainly is the most prolific, but that definitely doesn't make the best or the most effective, especially when compared to newer and more powerful (effective) rounds. (Look at the USPSA power factor listings.)
Overall, this is a great design and it should be allowed to prove itself with better chamberings.

I know Martin well Milton. The gun ended up being much more difficult to manufacture to the tolerances desired than first anticipated, hence the slow introduction. The second gen (5.0E shown) was specifically made to raise the bar on the design and continue to smooth out production challenges. I anticipate the next gen will be a more affordable model and, no doubt, showcasing more calibers as time passes. People don’t always understand the process of putting a new model into production and want multiple calibers, different options, etc. right away, but alas … those are usually ideas coming with the passage of time as the production details are worked out. We are spoiled when we see models with multiple calibers, options, finishes, etc. but those are usually designs having been in production for years, sometimes decades. Roy

Thanks for the response. I understand these issues more than you might think and I'm not looking for miracles, just offering some possibilities. There is also the always present possibility that a new design, regardless of how good, might fall flat on its face, often for reasons that boil down to 'we're just not ready for that,' etc. I meant no criticism of Martin. He seems like a straight up guy. That said; I've been involved in the crafts for many years and one of the worst things one can do is quote a price on any piece, gun or something else, and then turn around and ask for more. I learned that from bitter experience. I entertain no doubt Martin was totally sincere when he did that, but perhaps he should have waited a bit to make sure it was actually gonna work out. All things considered, I'm still waiting to see how it shakes out. Its a magnificent design, especially the very low bore line which is reminiscent of a high-grade target pistol.@@fmgpubs

I know they’re working on ways to simplify production but the bottom line is it’s a complicated, well engineered design that simply takes talent and skill to build. Not like a plastic pistol! I’ll keep everyone posted. Roy@@miltonhall7078

i would have bought the $1000 gun. production never seems to have gotten off to a good start as you can't see it available and with a limited production of the original now they have to upgrade the design. maybe it wasn't up to snuff. for 2 k i would buy something else. $1200 i may consider it.

    I want one of these.
I'm a NUT for a low bore axis!!!!
The reason I'm not a fan of the SIG 320/M17/M18.
I also shoot '80s style with my left trigger finger on the front of the trigger guard, I call it MAX WEDGE grip....(I'm a MOPAR fan too, so it fits for me) so I like the squared off trigger guard.
I would argue that the square barrel ADDS MASS, not reduces it BUT, maybe I'm wrong.
That's not necessarily a bad thing as it might enhance lock-up and allow for a lighter recoil spring since the barrel weight is part of the recoiling mass until the barrel is completely unlocked.
Thank you RIA for NOT porting it.
I may have to sell one of my P7s to get one! I THINK I'll wait for the 4.0E though.

    • @fmgpubs
      @fmgpubs  7 місяців тому

Indeed. It would depend on what you like. If you’ve ever fired an HKP7, this gun mirrors the low slide set-up so recoil is reduced and straight back, rather than up and back. The Dan Wessons are very nice guns too. Roy
