In the "after" map at 1:45, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec are shown with their boundaries after the 1912 extensions, which I do not believe occurred under Laurier (also, it might be worth noting that until 1927 Canada continued to claim most of Labrador). Laurier is pretty tough to play in civ 6 because he gets A LOT of really good diplomatic bonuses (immune to declarations of surprise wars, and a unique building, the hockey arena, that provides a lot of culture bonuses) making Laurier especially geared for a diplomatic victory in civ 6, which is one of the toughest victory types to achieve. But I could be wrong and just too used to getting domination victories in civ 5 with China who gets 2 attacks per unit per turn lol
Diplomatic victories require plenty of knowledge on how the AI will vote in world congress, such as how it almost always goes for 50% production for units. I sometimes end up winning Diplomatic games on accident, though I also struggle with domination ironically

This is an excellent video. I read a fair bit on him when I was researching my heritage as a descendent of some of those German mennonites from Russia that came over during his time as prime minister.
If it makes you feel better, JJ, Canada was the *first* country to adopt the Statute of Westminster. South Africa waited a couple years and Australia and New Zealand didn't become fully independent until the middle of World War II. So Canada was actually ahead of the curve in becoming independent from Britain.
Hey JJ I am a huge fan of your channel, I am an english Quebec resident and I started playing watching your vids when you first started talking about bilingualism in Canada. I have a suggestion for your next video on a Canadian Prime Minister: William Lyon Mackenzie King because he was a bit of an oddball and it would be interesting to hear your take on the situation. Regards
Interesting fact: in his younger days, when he was starting as a lawyer in Montreal, Laurier was involved in the movement OPPOSED to Confederation. He believed that it would be a catastrophe for French-Canadians. Time has proved him right... Unfortunately, ambition got the best of him and he changed his mind, leading him all the way to the post of PM. People in Quebec have a mixed view of him. Of course, he's way better than John A. MacDonald, Borden and other Conservative politicians. But he did abandon French-Canadians, like when he did not oppose the infamous anti-french language laws in Ontario in 1905. Also, while he was encouraging immigration from Europe he did not do anything to help poor Quebecois farmers to settle in the west... instead, lots of them moved to work in the textile millls in New England (and then assimilated into the american melting pot). The result is that Canada never became the "bilingual" country it is supposed to be.
Great video! Glad to see you're working on removing your bias in some of your videos, as many of them do have a lot of personal opinion affecting the content, but here it seems to give all the facts in a decently unbiased manner. Thanks!

One key thought: Canada is different from America, full stop. Like, as a Canadian, my desire to not be seen as American is similar to my desire to not be seen as German, except only one of those mistakes is consistently made. Not to suggest that Canada isn't similar, obviously we are, but the differences exist and matter, regardless of perception. Eg. Canada's distinctly large South Asian population and small black population
andrew johnstone Quebec is different from Alberta. Vermont is different from Kentucky. You’re probably different from the guy down the street. The question is whether those differences matter.
@Anon ymous you are insane if you think American health Care is better than Canadian. I have my own business and I pay Blue Cross $1,850 A MONTH just to keep my health insurance. With a $14,000 deductible for a family of four. And that is with keeping my "grandmothered" insurance plan that I acquired pre Obamacare. My deductible would be higher we're I to go in the public exchange. I understand even most Canadian conservatives are sane enough to know that your system is far better than ours. But thank you for representing the cancer of conservatism that is screwing up the world. Your cluelessness would make you the perfect Republican here.
Conservative media has you believing projection. The same way conservative media has everyone hating Muslims because it is run by jealous Christians who can't ram their religion down everyone's throat like in countries like Saudi Arabia. RepubliKKKans are the Christian Taliban. Canadians just wish Americans would be saner but with so many Americans buying into the nonsesnse of exceptionalism they're blinded to reality.
@Andrew A lot of bullshit to unpack there. Firstly 'America' is not a continent. There are two continents with the name 'America' in them: North America and South America. So to use the term 'America' for either one them flies in the face of basic geography. I may ask which crimes do conservatives in the US tolerate. If anything, they are the tough on crime groups. America is an individualistic country, get that fact through your head. Conservatives and some liberals adhere to this strain of individualism as it was baked into the US constitution. Here we go with the "racist, divisive and hateful" conservative talking point whose evidence is mainly bullshit. In my final statement, I will ask how is Trump eroding American democratic norms? Because he sends some mean tweets to media companies. Sorry that's not actual evidence for him trying to be a tyrant.
Some of the stuff you make, JJ; like this video, is good enough to be played back in schools. Much better than my Grade 5 teachers' summary of Laurier.

I definitely find Canadian history stories like this interesting, I would bet you'll see a million subscribers in the not too distant future. Content of this quality can't go unnoticed forever.
"This was.. uh.. Wilfred Laurier's pen" LOL
Man I’m loving your content
Posts a video where he states how much he like a Liberal, French Canadian politician.
WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DID YOU DO WITH J. J. MCCULLOUGH???
His is long enough ago that it doesn't matter as much. Anyway, wasn't there some kind of party flip thingy? (I'm not super educated on Canadian history so don't come at me if I've got it wrong)
@@ThinWhiteAxe Nah that was in the US between Democrats and Republicans. 19th century Anglo-Saxon liberals like Laurier were about as far from modern Canadian and American liberalism as a homosexual 'Murica fanboy like JJ is from actual conservatism.
Calmirdonnvs Rex this comment is so wrong in so many ways. This dude is extremely biased, and has no idea what he is talking about. If you don’t take my word for it, at least look it up on Wikipedia or something, and don’t listen to this fool.
@@zoomer_zveno wtf is “actual conservatism”
@@ThinWhiteAxe No the Liberal party has remained predominantly a party dominated by an alliance between centrist leaning urbanites in Montreal and Toronto since their formation in the 1860s. They were pulled a bit to the left as they adopted reformist liberalism in the 60s but they are still the centre party in Canada.
I hate how I can't subscribe twice -- Great video! Exellent way of telling Canadian history in a fascinating way!
I've got a feeling J.J. has civilization vi
Thank you for the content! You teach in a way that is fun to watch.
At 1:56 you describe him as a ninth-generation Canadian, but various sources online describe him as a sixth-generation Canadian. A slip on your part, or are you counting it differently?
EXCELLENT VIDEO! You made Canadian History interesting!
*America laughs in the distance*
When you said "civilization" I was screaming lol 10/10 best game
*ahem* Civ 5
I love Civilization. It was soo much fun to play it.... Thanks for this video. I did not know anything about Laurier. Cool that you taught me.
Well if they made Canada a playavi Civilization. They should make Venezuela under Simon Bolivar as well too
Good news, they did, it’s Gran Colombia.
Love your videos. Seems to be the only history-type videos that I can stomach, much more enjoy!
Laurier is definitely one of the best, but I personally feel that Lester B. Pearson was the best Prime Minister we've ever had.
Great video! Glad to see you're working on removing your bias in some of your videos, as many of them do have a lot of personal opinion affecting the content, but here it seems to give all the facts in a decently unbiased manner. Thanks!
They should show this in Canadian public schools - the kids might actually pay attention and learn about Laurier, I'm one of those canadians that JJ referenced that basically knows Laurier as the guy on the 5$ bill (sadly) excellent video, you should definitely do more like this one
I go to school in french and they talk about Laurier because he was french and a great prime minister
Awesome video! I’m from the United Kingdom, and I’m finding Canadian history really interesting to learn at the moment. I would love to see more historical topics!
I guess I kind of understand why Canadians want to be set apart from Americans, but I don’t understand why they seem hostile about it.
@Andrew
A lot of bullshit to unpack there.
Loving the Canadian History content. Keep it coming!
Make a video about Western alienation in Canada.
Great Wolf Bunch of crybabies in the west want their cake and eat it too.
That would be a very interesting topic
Fuck the east.
F#ck your tribal bullcrap all of ya's !
He just did. At least, how it started... (out of a failed free trade agreement)
Some of the stuff you make, JJ; like this video, is good enough to be played back in schools. Much better than my Grade 5 teachers' summary of Laurier.
You should do the rest like your world leaders series, especially King and MacDonald
Excellent historical talk video on one of best PM's. Keep them coming please.
I don't think it's called a prime minister-ship I think it's called a premiere-ship
It's called both.
Thank you JJ for the video. I am really enjoy learning about Canada and Canadian history on your channel.
Right now I am living in Montreal near Laurier metro station and a park called after him. So right now I know a bit more about him.
Sounds like a great leader actually and the skit at the end perfectly sums up the political dynamic lmao.
I'm what you'd call a French Canadian but I watch your videos to broaden my horizon not to hate good job 🙌🏾
We need more every world leader
Amazing video because you make Canadian history look non-boring!
Jj go to Wikipedia:Interesting Articles you'll find a bunch of very interesting topics
I hate Wikipedia.
Thx for commenting to me though
Love it when JJ uploads. GJ my northern friend. 👏
Sir Wilfred Laurier is the most British name ever
Laurier is a French name haha
If it was British it would be pronounced Lorry-er.
@@CdnPoli precisely- most nobles in Britain have French ancestry, so it is stereotypically British for an upper class person to have a name that sounds foreign or strange to the average Briton.
Benedict Cumberbatch is the most English name I can think of.
@@iskandertime747 I know a man named Montgomery White. He's white
Thanks for the video. I demand more politic / history videos.
Back when the Liberals cared about the West...
@@goofaccount No, I was talking about free trade between the West and the States. The conservatives hurt the West by blocking this. The other stuff was bad, but that wouldn't have really negatively affected the people already living in the West.
@Mas Gonderawi Laurier didn't anihilate natives? So it's okay he dislocated them as long as he didn't anihilate them. Cool story, bro.
@@Rindiculousfun wait so now u blaming conservatives?
I love these videos because they're literally recaps of what im learning in my history classes:p
Thanks for sharing. I Like this kind of videos and I would like to hear more about important characters from Canada's history.
While we're at it: I'd love to see a second part to the '5 easy ways to get smarter' video! Still one of my favourites :)
I Always love learning about important figures through history
