    Hey J.J! I have a subject of Canadian history you could talk about. It's Africville, it's a place around Halifax where a lot of black people lived. It has a lot of history. However, in the 60s, without noticing the citizens of Africville the province bulldozed the whole city. Today the place is now a museum that tells the story of black communities in the maritime. There is a rich history and a lot of material to make a video. I think it's an important topic because so little of the Canadian population know about Africville and the racism against black communities in general (and even slavery). Also there are still people living today that grew up in Africville that want to keep the spirit of the place alive. It would really be great for you to talk about it and I think it would make a very interesting video.

    Thank you Mr. McCullough for creating this video, which I enjoyed very much. We Americans do not have much exposure to Canadian history, and so your videos, being as informative accessible as they are, are always appreciated.
    I feel compelled, however, to raise the issue of the maps which were used to show the administrative divisions before and after Laurier's time in office. In the "before" map at 1:44, Quebec is shown with its post-1898 boundaries, Manitoba was shown with the correct eastern boundary but incorrect western boundary (a.k.a. the road allowance between ranges 29 and 30 west of the first meridian as defined by the DLS, the same boundary as exists today), and the North-West Territories was not shown at all (which is only strange because the territories were included in the "after" map). In the "after" map at 1:45, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec are shown with their boundaries after the 1912 extensions, which I do not believe occurred under Laurier (also, it might be worth noting that until 1927 Canada continued to claim most of Labrador). It seems these errors also carried over into the second map demonstration around 9:00.

    Thanks again JJ. I think it's important that he rose in the late Victorian period and lasted almost to WWI. As an American, I would have said the 19th century was The UK century. The US barely survived the war of 1812, our civil war and then spent the next 25 years in reconstruction. What we did was expand the west but that's no very global in importance, except the Spain and Mexico fights.

    The 2nd Boer war was not Canada's first official war, It was the first official OVERSEAS war. The Finnian Raids, Red River rebellion and Northwest Rebellion were some of the first.

    • @thehistoadian
      @thehistoadian 5 років тому

      @Mustafa Alam They were wars caused by Metis Rebels, the red river one was more of a riot but is still considered a rebellion but the Northwest Rebellion was the largest one and took place in 1885 between Metis and Native Rebels in Saskatchewan taking white hostages and trying to over throw the Government. Luckily the Government sent out troops in time as the only Government forces in the west were the NWMP the war lasted around 5 months ending with Louis Riel (The Rebel leader) being hung in Regina. It is a very interesting war to learn about but sadly schools hardly talk about it and when they do often add un true things and dont mention other parts.

    • @thehistoadian
      @thehistoadian 5 років тому

      @Mustafa Alam Its often because the First World war over shadows them, and the Northwest Rebellion was againts Metis and Natives so people often get offended when they find out about froglake massacre done by Natives since schools try to teach us that they love everyone and have never done anything bad... The best way to research it is reading old military records and news papers which you can find online and forums.

    Laurier is pretty tough to play in civ 6 because he gets A LOT of really good diplomatic bonuses (immune to declarations of surprise wars, and a unique building, the hockey arena, that provides a lot of culture bonuses) making Laurier especially geared for a diplomatic victory in civ 6, which is one of the toughest victory types to achieve. But I could be wrong and just too used to getting domination victories in civ 5 with China who gets 2 attacks per unit per turn lol

      Diplomatic victories require plenty of knowledge on how the AI will vote in world congress, such as how it almost always goes for 50% production for units. I sometimes end up winning Diplomatic games on accident, though I also struggle with domination ironically

    If it makes you feel better, JJ, Canada was the *first* country to adopt the Statute of Westminster. South Africa waited a couple years and Australia and New Zealand didn't become fully independent until the middle of World War II. So Canada was actually ahead of the curve in becoming independent from Britain.

    Interesting fact: in his younger days, when he was starting as a lawyer in Montreal, Laurier was involved in the movement OPPOSED to Confederation. He believed that it would be a catastrophe for French-Canadians. Time has proved him right... Unfortunately, ambition got the best of him and he changed his mind, leading him all the way to the post of PM.
    People in Quebec have a mixed view of him. Of course, he's way better than John A. MacDonald, Borden and other Conservative politicians. But he did abandon French-Canadians, like when he did not oppose the infamous anti-french language laws in Ontario in 1905. Also, while he was encouraging immigration from Europe he did not do anything to help poor Quebecois farmers to settle in the west... instead, lots of them moved to work in the textile millls in New England (and then assimilated into the american melting pot). The result is that Canada never became the "bilingual" country it is supposed to be.

      One key thought: Canada is different from America, full stop. Like, as a Canadian, my desire to not be seen as American is similar to my desire to not be seen as German, except only one of those mistakes is consistently made. Not to suggest that Canada isn't similar, obviously we are, but the differences exist and matter, regardless of perception.
      Eg. Canada's distinctly large South Asian population and small black population

      @Anon ymous you are insane if you think American health Care is better than Canadian. I have my own business and I pay Blue Cross $1,850 A MONTH just to keep my health insurance. With a $14,000 deductible for a family of four. And that is with keeping my "grandmothered" insurance plan that I acquired pre Obamacare. My deductible would be higher we're I to go in the public exchange. I understand even most Canadian conservatives are sane enough to know that your system is far better than ours. But thank you for representing the cancer of conservatism that is screwing up the world. Your cluelessness would make you the perfect Republican here.

The same way conservative media has everyone hating Muslims because it is run by jealous Christians who can't ram their religion down everyone's throat like in countries like Saudi Arabia. RepubliKKKans are the Christian Taliban. Canadians just wish Americans would be saner but with so many Americans buying into the nonsesnse of exceptionalism they're blinded to reality.

      @Andrew
      A lot of bullshit to unpack there.
      Firstly 'America' is not a continent. There are two continents with the name 'America' in them: North America and South America.
      So to use the term 'America' for either one them flies in the face of basic geography.
      I may ask which crimes do conservatives in the US tolerate. If anything, they are the tough on crime groups.
      America is an individualistic country, get that fact through your head. Conservatives and some liberals adhere to this strain of individualism as it was baked into the US constitution.
      Here we go with the "racist, divisive and hateful" conservative talking point whose evidence is mainly bullshit.
      In my final statement, I will ask how is Trump eroding American democratic norms?
      Because he sends some mean tweets to media companies.
      Sorry that's not actual evidence for him trying to be a tyrant.
