This God damn Genelec has raised the bar so high that nothing can compete with its neutrality to my ears! Damn, it IS a reference, as a reference should be. To my ears, most of the speakers demoed in this channel color the mids, in an unnatural way, a bad way. They are fun to listen, bad for mixing and mastering. It is a shame every genelec is damn expensive! Fk!
Far from it. Look at the frequency response compared to even an hs5 and you will see how lumpy it is. It is a good CONSUMER reference but not a good flat mix reference. Buy hs7s. Same money as these, better sound.
@@samuelivascu7633 I'm sorry, but the HS7 isn't that neutral, and the HS5 is even worse. Genelecs in DS's comparison videos have always been the closest to the original tracks, especially the 8020D, and it shows in the frequency response chart. They also make my ATH-M50X sound open, while Yamaha HS monitors sound shallow.
@@raykrislianggi hs7s have a dip at 1.5k that doesnt make them neutral but if you learn its sound and look past it it presents a more critical picture that the genelecs imo. Have heard the 8020d once in a store and didnt like it that much. Also i use the hs7s with m50xs and dt990s and i like them. I think its just personal preference
I have both on my desk (genelec 8010a actually). The genelec's sound a bit better, but they sound very similar to the a2. They're definitely not worth 3x the price. Returning the genelec's.
Ok, so to my ears the A2's have more tops n bottom compared to the 8010, which gives me the impression that the A2's sound way more hyped- almost across the whole frequency range. The Generic's sound a lot more flat and unflattering, which is as it should be. I owned the A2's- series one and always found them really bass heavy to a point until they ran out of steam in the really lower regions. I had good use out of them for around 2 years until they suddenly died one day?! They still power up but instead of the sound of the music, there is just this strange fluttering type static sound- You get what you pay for!! Suffice to say, if you need something small and space efficient to enjoy listening, then A2. If you are producing, mixing and referencing music then I reckon the Gens would translate way better- going by my limited experience with them and from what I can perceive via this sound test. The Generic's do have a great reputation via those in the recording industry, which is reflected in their price, as a more precision type instrument. My 2cents : !)
I heard zero difference at first. But then I noticed the upper mid range likes to "ring"/ resonate on the audioengine, like the cymbals and vocals. The genelec in contrast lets you hear the lower mids better, and is just flatter and tighter. (I also remember the A2 audioengine had a real sound stage, although maybe a bit beamy...)
The intervals can be shorten as I think most people cannot remember the speaker characteristics for too long, unless they had heard that particular music for many times.
I can't decide which is better, since: 8010A = music reproduction A2+ = music listening But as a normal consumer, you will definitely end up burning more cash in Genelacs as you need a dedicated DAC/audio interface to complete the setup.
Ive run both and each have their strengths etc. Genelec is always top notch reference quality but of course given their size have little punch and in my case limited versatility due to XLR connection, they still sound great for such a tiny monitor. AEs have more 'colour' especially after ditching that stock foam and repacking with Twaron Angel hair and they're easy to connect to a phone while at work, easy peasy. I like 'em both for their respective environments/intended use. If I were to buy Genelec again Id get the 8020. Genelec: Reference/ mixing AE: Casual listening.
So little difference... I went into it expecting the Genelec to blow the AudioEngine out of the water. During the bass test, the AudioEngine seemed to start playing the bass higher than it should near the end, and the Genelec just refused to play it. Not sure which I'd prefer.
This shows the Genelec loses in situations where instruments and vocals that have midrange should shine. Audioengine a2+ by far is better with strings and vocals.
Great review, thnx! One can really hear the difference, like you've stated, in the upper mid to highs on the A2+ speakers. Other than that I must say they both seem quite close in performance (haven't checked the spec sheets yet). Genelec are quite pricey and cost about double the A2+, but you do get that awesome Finnish quallity! You should perhaps compare the all white Genelecs to give a fairer comparison in stylishnes, although I sometimes think of them as looking a bit like marshmallows =) Both brands rock!
With the setup you have here, I'd choose the Genelec. It's more accurate IMO, especially for vocal. The A2+ has a bump in upper-mid range to sound more "open" but a bit etched to my ears. Meanwhile, going through UA-cam via a receiver from a computer (using HDMI) through the preout to the Adcom GFA5500 powering a pair of Sonus Faber Olympica II probably is not the best reproduction of the sound either :(
Big difference in quality too, even on crappy youtube vids you can pick up the immediate subtle differences. I have A2+ and they do sound quite nice especially after repacking with Twaron "angel hair"....I know it sounds 'poncey' but it really does make a difference. I use them at work with my crappy phone and mediocre files, mounted at ear level, still sound pretty nice. Id buy AudioEngine again. Part of the reason Genelec are more expensive is because they have amplifiers on EACH driver, and are PERFECTLY balanced the A2+ do not and are not. Genelec -> Class D amps, A2+ -> class AB amp. Genelec have multiple dip switches on the rear to adjust specific frequencies and are XLR only but you can buy adapters. A2+ are plug and play, non adjustable, basic. IMO the decision should depend on your listening preferences, files and source. If youre just using your phone or some other mediocre source then A2+...using a nice higher-end amp/dac etc... Genelec all the way.
For music production i would definetly choose the Genelecs as it's flat and neutral compared to the Audioengine which has a boost in the upper mids and sounds more open and enjoyable if music listening is your priority
I enjoy the music to be played as accurately as possible. Any colouration breaks the illusion that in listening to the music instead of the speakers. I dont want to listen to the speakers.
I went with the audioengine a2+. I also have a Aune Tube USB DAC with a Russian Gold Lion 6922 / E88CC Genalex (Lol Name) and I can tell you they sound insane.
@@alias_not_needed not a great analogy. Its more like taking a photo with a lens, then taking a picture of that picture, and then doing it a third time, and then trying to judge the picture quality of the original. The audio gets colored three times before you hear it, so its not remotely an accurate comparison of these speakers
We know its best if we can audition the speakers in person. But if we can’t, we can still get a good impression of their characteristics if we use a good headphone to listen with.
I was in a Deli in Flemington New Jersey maybe 4 years ago and I had to ask them what the speakers were, cause they sounded so good and it was these Audio Engine. But I have needed desk speakers for two years now and only just now bought a pair which are still in the boxes (I need to get cables) and we went for the Genelec 8020 cause really I have very much preference to support the West and its way of life..the Aluminum speaker body..the metal grills and since when these things fail they seem to be unrepairable I wanted the most durable. But there is difference in price here but the Genelec will out live the A2 and in the long run be no more costly.
Honestly the genelec does not have a flat enough sound for me, i perfer the A2+. The genelec seems like it could be too forgiving and when played on other speakers might not sound as crisp. That being said, I can not give the best feed back because i have not heard these in person set to my room.

I’m surprised that these two have a quite little difference. Bass is 8010’s win of course, but a2 is not that bad.

Let's just say the Genelec is the GENELEC~more accurate、natual sound…
yeep but Genelec are true monitors and Audioengine A2+ are multimedia speakers

Waiting for my 8010’s to arrive.
I wanted the 8020’s but I have a smaller computer desk.
How is it going with the 8010? do they have any hiss or noise? Is the sound good?

I'd prefer the constraint of the genelec speakers instead of the speaker overcompensating (a2)

edifier mr4 vs genelec 8010 or 8020 please
I ain’t hear the difference until classical mood. Genelec apparently has bigger dynamic range
A2+ sounds awful. Listening with Sennheiser HD660S2

제네렉이 더 선명하긴 한데 밝고 개방된 사운드는 오엔인 듯
A2+ mids are harsh 😐
Hi, in your opinion and experience, which would you say that has the same quality as genelec 8010 or higher at lower cost

l perfer to chose G1
no hesitate to have A2+
Can you do the new Presonus Eris E3.5? Please. Thank you.
I have already ordered a pair for test. Comparisons should start to roll out in coming weeks
Oh thank you very much. Just wanna let you know how helpful your videos are.
Thanks man!
For me its A2+
Genelec for sure.
Eris 5 or 4.5 vs genlec
E4.5 vs 8010a is coming soon
I dont understand these tests. Its like taking a picture of a picture
Yes. You would be able to look at picture from Van Gough next to one of Leonardo Da Vinci, without going to the Louvre ore some other gallery.

Genelec 8010A однозначно лидер!
no big difrence , both speakers is almost identical sounding
paska aivo agree with you.
oh no no no
they arent in the same league. comparison? maybe the formfactor?
Genelec is the best , audioengine over high. Over in ear pitching
dream a dream band music ?
genelec is overpriced
