Sonar Frequency Explained

  • This video gives and overview of which sonar frequencies to use under certain conditions. Higher frequencies do not always perform the BEST!!! Video examples are done on a Garmin UHD 93SV with a GT52UHD transducer depending on your sonar unit and transducer performance and options may vary.
    NOTE: The cone angle image was found on the Northwest Fishing Reports blog posting, calculations were not verified. Used as reference to show increasing coverage area as the cone angle increases.

      Great video! I do have a question, though I always see videos talking about frequency high and low shallow and deep water, but what's considered as deep and shallow water? Like, what should I have my frequency set on if I'm in, let's just say, 20-60 feet or 100 or more what's considered deep or shallow

      It really depends on the transducer, the best resource I’ve found is the Garmin transducer selection guide. It will tell you the maximum depth at each frequency for each different transducer for clear vu and side vu, at 100’ you shouldn’t be too limited. Traditional will work well at all frequencies in those depths. I would start at the lower frequencies and work up. you can google it, easy to find

    Thanking you again. I retired this year and am kayak fishing off the California coast. I was able to get a Garmin UHD 74cv. I knew this could be a great unit, but never even got close to its potential til I found your site. You have a great knack of explaining and diagraming things so that a layman (truckdriver) can understand and put to use. I am enjoying my fishing success so much more now that I am beginning to understand what is under me. Thank you so very much.

      That’s great!! I just got a Bonafide SS127 and fished a bass tournament in it. What a blast. I have some kayak videos in the que that will be rolling out on Saturday mornings for the next 4 weeks. Thank you for the comment, have a great day!!!

      How Cool. You will enjoy the Yak. It is still fishing but in a way a different environment; so peaceful and quiet. You can get into new areas.

    I'm definitely going to check this out when I have time to comprehend it.
    I need to educate myself on what the frequencies do.

      Lower frequency penetrates farther in the water column and generally less detail. Much of the frequency and image detail is driven by the quality of the transducer. Thanks for watching and have a great day!

      It takes a little bit to gain trust in it. Go to the “fish the moment” channel and look at some of Johnny’s sidevu videos. There not Garmin but he does a great job of explaining how it works and interpreting what you are seeing. I use it mainly to find structure. A 9” screen is pretty hard to actually see fish.

    I love your video lot of very good information at the moment I'm having trouble with mine it's the same 93 there my screen seemed to have his way too much junk running around and I don't know I can get rid of some of it or I'm stuck with it and that's just to start

    • @DoubleTFishing

      You should be able to adjust your contrast or gain depending on which sonar screen your talking about (traditional or clear vu) to reduce noise clutter. If it’s vertical lines along the screen check that your power is above 11 volts, your ferrite bead is on your transducer cable and your not powered off your trolling motor battery. I have to adjust my brightness throughout the day for sunlight conditions but the gain and contrast I don’t mess with allot once they are set. If your transducer is getting air bubbles under it the picture is really bad. A little clutter isn’t a bad thing, I’ve been guilty of making the image so clear I’m missing the fish marks lol.

    so snapper trolling from 60 to 90 meters which frequency to use high chirp or medium chirp?

    • @DoubleTFishing
      @DoubleTFishing  Рік тому

      I’m not sure which type unit and transducer you are using and I’m definitely not a deep water angler but using traditional sonar with my Garmin ECHOMAP the high wide chirp transducer will reach almost 250 meters so I wouldn’t think you would be limited much and could use your higher frequency, now clear vu I can’t reach 90 meters according to the chart. I’d recommend looking at your transducer specifications to determine what frequency to try. The other method would be to start out at a high frequency and turn it down if needed until you get a clear image of the bottom. If you are running an ECHOMAP try that traditional split frequency screen and play around with that to make sure your seeing suspended fish correctly

    My 73sv don't show flasher on the screen how do I set it where I can see it. Thanks Robbie

    • @DoubleTFishing
      @DoubleTFishing  2 роки тому

      That’s odd? I have it on my home screen with the other sonar icons? Try building a combo and see if it gives you an option to add flasher. They hide the A-scope in the traditional. You have to open the traditional sonar, go into the menu then turn on A-scope to show the flasher on the side of the screen if that’s what your searching for? Have a great day Robbie. My GT54 doesn't allow me to change frequencies?

    • @DoubleTFishing

      It only has 800khz in clear vu but you do have 455khz and 1120 kHz in side vu. The GT56 has more options.

      Yes, unfortunately it is an image so I don’t have a link but if you search “sonar cone angle coverage” in your web browser and select “images” it is a few pages down. If you do Instagram send me a message with you email and I’ll send you the image.
