This guy has the balls to stick with the fact that he didn't like the cinematics of Jai Bhim and gives appropriate explanations for it. I feel sorry for him as on his review video, so many ppl have bashed his caste and have quoted that it was the reason for his ' biased ' review 😤. Those individuals were purely disgusting. Thank you, BR for standing up for what you believe in, in the most respectable, civilised and strong way possible. My respect for you has skyrocketed.

And a reviewer like Mr. Baradwaj who is famous and thought to be a rational person gives a bad review to a good film just misleads the audience. I guess I wouldn't watch his review anymore and I hope he gets infamous very soon and loose any monetary benefit from reviewing movies..

A scene like Pariyerum perumal what he mentioned must be the scene where the girl takes a newspaper to read infront of Suriya but when suriya glances at her, she drops it. And suriya just stared like why'd you bothered reading in front of me? That's definitely Equality. But in Pariyerum perumal Equality was shown so beautifully and subtly with nothing but just a wide frame which zooms into 2 tea glasses above a table. Jai Bhim showed Equality much more onto the face kind of equality which also worked for me.

Your justification might draw more criticism than your original review... Having said that I don't think people have ever had a problem with your review . For instance I liked Kavan and you ripped it apart (But all your points were amazing it lent more perspective) likewise I did not like Kaatru Veliyidai (But again your review was different and I ended up watching it again to observe what you said).. this review was different I guess. One thing you got absolutely right was the fact that tone matters ... Perhaps if you were calmer (like in your previous reviews) the whole response would have been completely different

Very good reply Baddy! Man, people go bonkers if someone says bad about "Jai Bhim". Everyone is entitled to hold his/her opinion. Sometimes even I felt that the movie relied heavily on emotions. Visaranai was pretty similar but the writing was intelligent and kept me glued throughout. However, in Jai Bhim, I saw flat story with some unnecessary scenes. Especially, MS Baskar's, which didn't help the film at all!

Jai Bhim is a simplistic movie which is why a film critic like BR didn’t like it. You would see a trend where he has liked movies which haven’t worked fully or been commercially successful because they have layers to them. I don’t see him being against tribes or Dalits as he loves the work of Vetrimaran, Mari Selvaraj etc when they do movies on caste oppression.
I personally loved Jai Bhim because I really bought into the emotion of the story. Especially Manikandan and Lijo Mol arc. This whole thing about police nabbing people from lower classes/ castes is definitely true in Chennai. I have seen it personally happen. Probably due to that I felt very impacted watching the movie.
Movies are art. Film critics view art through a different lens. The common man/ woman views art through a different lens. BR is not wrong in his views. We are not wrong for liking it either.
I really hope the Irulas finally get their patta, voter ID and caste certificates as a consequence of the increased attention. No politician - atleast an Indian one is going to give two hoots about them till they get the power to vote in consolidation.

BR there are various kinds of critics man..There are critics who look at a movie through the lense of feminism or post modernism..You appear to be more from the school of New Critics(just read up the critical works of T.S Eliot or I.A Richards)with more focus on form and cinematicness of a particular movie which is also a lense or prism..So there isn't an inherent definition of a critic just different schools of criticism...By the way which book reviewer do you prefer?

You can't say "for some films I will leave aside my entire style and philosophy of reviewing just because it's an important issue". Also find it objectionable when so-called reasonable folks RT comments saying BR is a casteist/elitist etc. just because the craft didn't work for him. By this logic nobody talks about the political subtext in so many films even though they exist. Doesn't make them bigots.

The intention of Slow Motion when Suriya jumped over the Barricades is the subtle way of telling the audience that, he will cross all the barriers and hurdles in life no matter what. And the reason is to get justice for people and not for any public stunts. No one can stand between him and people who are robbed off of Justice. That's what this simple slow-motion conveys. This is not a joke BR. A Slow-motion can come anywhere, it is not necessarily the place you expect it to be. He's not just another lawyer here because among hundreds of lawyers standing there only Chandru jumps. That's the point you're missing. This is a fantastic foreshadowing at least to me.

Aprom, having MS BASKAR character belonging to that particular upper caste!! Surya has him Jus to bash that community. That character is not a comic relief in the movie and not relevant to the story proceedings too. Surya has that character just to show his வன்மம்(evilness).
Then, the real life police character name is Anthonisamy. While retaining many real life character names including justice k Chandru, he has changed this officer name. That’s fine. But y was that calendar indicating Vanniyars placed??? Wats the need to show him as vanniyar!! Just to spread hate against them???
Then when vanniyar organisations opposed, he changed the calendar picture to Lord Lakshmi. Still referring and indicating something else.
I am sure, surya has become venomous and spitting poison. Youngsters have to be careful.
Additional to that, Surya has made sure in not revealing the real caste of Justice K Chandru
Even in Soorarai potru, the real Captain Gopinath is an Iyengar who believes in god. He wanted even poors to FLY. But Mr Surya twisted the history and showed him as an atheist belonging to some backward caste.
Y, Mr Surya has issues in showing Bhramins as good hearted????

BR .. .First of all, appreciate your openness about realizing that you could have toned down a little. Respect!
I think the problem that most your viewers had with your review was not that you did not like it. It was because of the way you kept calling it as a movie without any depth in handling or everyone is shown one dimensional etc. Thats where I disagree too, technically.
For instance, 'manikandan' character is shown to make 'nakkal' comments in 3 instances and one of them unfortunately ends up being a bad thing for him. The pannaiyaar lady remembers what he said and thats when they tell him as suspect to the Police. There is depth in that.
Surya immediately reacts to Sengeni that 'I wont take your case and go to someone else', when he comes to know about the phone call. He is no perfect hero there, makes bad judgement out of anger. Thats definitely not one dimensional character. Same goes for the teacher too, when she chose to hide the truth about the phone call.
I disagree on the slow motion also. The slow motion is to establish the hero's priorities which is essential for the movie. He was just leading a protest and he could even abruptly abandon the protest to do his duty to help the oppressed. Same is openly conveyed in the next scene when judge asks him for the same. We may "tag" all these as heroism, but all am arguing is that there is quite a bit of scene establishment and couple of dialogues invested in it. Not handled with simplicity without any depth nor the audience were taken for granted.
In general, a movie of this genre wouldn't just gain lot of attention if it wasn't made with atleast some depth in the art.
There are several movies in same premise, that failed to gain attention due to run-of-the mill handling. Maaveeran kittu comes to my mind as an example.

Unfortunately I see it differently, the explanation by BR as to why slow motion used when Suryia jumps over the barricade is not to show heroism. It is the pointer... that he is ready to fight for the suppressed irrespective of the situation or the establishment(s) as he does not want to miss any single opportunity that the suppressed are deprived off.

sorry sir.... i love your reviews and look upto your take on films. But i was surprised and shocked to hear your thoughts on Jai bhim now. Firstly its not a masala film. When you say masala, then its putting it in the same league as Annathae/enemy/mgr magan. Its a gross misrepresentation. I am wondering how you even said that. The film made a hero of chandru character yes but its through his intentions and actions..... i dont know what about the film in terms of its craft or content deserved that flak. What is wrong is positioning chandru as a hero? It is logical in every sense. When lokesh made master, you lauded it as a good mix of "50% vijay film and 50% lokesh" why such a problem with this film?
Every one are entitled to their opinions yes. But when a bold, heart felt, honest film gets dissed unwarrantedly, especially from a critic of your standing, its just surprising.

Not just the tone, some examples were so hurting. Yes the movie might have been loud with its emotions. But given that many were able to connect with those emotions, and even justice Chandru himself saying that the movie is a toned down version of the reality since reality was way more cruel. Wouldn't that make one feel bad for not understanding the emotions.

The way BR said on narrative part of potraying "irulars - chandru- irulas- chandru" was fine...But those kinda narratives were already made in many flims for eg. Mahanati...And it was damn old one too...Yes it will b engaging but here they portrayed irulas at first to let ppl know wat sort of humiliation, discreminations n false accusations they gone through ...Think tat created d impact on viewers...So there no such disagreement on writing part...!
Then coming to slo-mo, he made reference from asuran which is fine..Everyone knows slo-mo is to elevate a ordinary scene..in asuran slo mo came into play when dhanush unleashing his anger which is kinda elevation factor...here after 40 min of irulas narrative n How unfair the police n ppl are to thm there should b a ray of hope...and director is potraying tat hope comes from a character chandru..So there is no wrong placing slo-mo in chandru's intro tat elevates d scene n audience response...Its director's choice. ...even this flim was made without a mass fi8 or a useless song ppl lyk u commenting on single slow mo...watelse can a director do BR...
Same BR lyked Doctor which worked a bit to me but not great flim n he even lyked non sense mass flims lyk bigil which made me sleep...eww...As a fan of u, i accept ur criticism on flims and i ask u do d same coming from ppl... by d by, No disrepect to u BR..

There is slow mo for Suriya entry because it’s the moment that describes surya character, though he is protest he breaks it and goes to court to get justice for needy, that scene shows that’s his priority on top of everything….also if creators start following rules then there would be no creativity…it’s a director choice when to go for slow mo…if that frustrates you then you are frustrated with new creative ideas

Where it has slow motion and where it doesn't have is too small thing, in my opinion, to judge whether a film is good or bad.. Asuran has even got masala elements that are no where close to reality..60 year old man fighting and knocking down ten people... big spade goes into the old Dhanush's shoulders... still he continues to fight fiercely....

@@arunarvind7195 the very act of having an action scene for a old man with a mass bgm itself is a masala...the novel on which it was based on does NOT potray this side of sivasamy at all...yes Asuran has a lot of mass masala fight scenes and Vertri himself told in a few interviews that he had to do this to reach a wider audience...it's just that the action scenes were not totally over-the-top...
