As much as we like to romanticise the Victorian Age as well as ages before, let us also recall that the idea of equality for all was still a long way off...What a wonderful doc and how important it is to remember that these freedoms were hard won and could be easily stripped away without our eternal vigilance! Thank you to the person who found this and uploaded it for us!

***** I think they have held held up pretty well in terms of quality, but one noticeable feature is that they make fewer films themselves these days, preferring to either outsource production or simply buy them in from other companies. The BBC has been hit fairly hard by funding restrictions, so perhaps that's why.

from the 1st woman's story: GET AWAY FROM AN ANGRY MAN
from the 2nd woman's story: Honor the man who will care for you and unite his home with you. Be aware that the men who "sometimes" have time for you, will abandon you in your time of need.

    • @forevertruth1206

No, its not. That's a myth perpetrated by angry men who perceive that losing privilege to equality is akin to losing it all. A man views a 50-50 split as losing. That is the messed up part. Privileged males who are taught that they have a right to own it all, just like in this documentary. Can you imagine a world where a man is the property of the woman, and has no rights. He is not even counted for as existing? When that happens, I'll give credence to male's bitching.

One of the pinnacle achievements of feminism is that it not only freed women from societal expectations, but freed men from the societal demands of a life of almost forced wage-labour and expected marriage and family support. Women today are absolutely free to make the choices and decisions that are right for them, and so are men. Women today lament about the crash-diving marriage rate, the proverbial 'non-committal' male and men not 'manning-up' to their expectations, but what they are really seeing is men now unshackling themselves from societal expectations and traditionalism exactly as women are. Should it be any different?

+JanK10000 muslim women had rights to property and inheritance and their own salary way back in the 7th century whereas western women only got rights in the 19th century no offence but you don't seem to understand Islamic law
In 19th century England women couldn't own your own property of you were married like what makes a married woman's rights different to a single woman? We never had these problems in 8th century Arabia because islam liberated women
I really think you should read up on islamic tradition because when women in Arabia were allowed inheritance and the right to own property in Europe a court was set up to debate whether women had souls???? WHETHER WOMEN HAD SOULS was being debated by 7th century Europeans as a legitimate question
Obviously some cultures have issues with women today but this has nothing to do with the Islamic tradition but many of these shackles placed on some muslim women are cultural and societal as opposed to religious

+JanK10000 it has many reasons obviously it's a degeneration of islamic intellectual progress because of colonialism, the growth of fringe ideologies and culture because a people who are on the defensive can't progress without regaining their dignity. You have to understand that Islamic intellectualism has declined in the past two centuries with tribal culture moving to the forefront because of the lack of a United islamic leader that is fit to talk about the pressing issues. If you want to talk about islam ATLEAST know the issues and how Saudi Arabia transports their regressive ideology/ peasant culture all over the Middle East and the muslim world. Know the differences between certain cultures and Islam as a vast tradition.

Regarding the third woman in this story, I still hear men say things that make no sense, regarding women who sell themselves being the dregs of the earth; and yet the men to go to them, are not looked at the same--as male dregs of the earth. But certainly, they are. Often, the women are just trying to eat and survive; with the men it is just pure lust and often perversion too... How is it that they disrespect the women, but don't see that they too, are not worthy of any Respect.

I'm old enough to remember being told that the internet would turn us into one big happy global family, when instead what I see is societies atomising into angry little interest groups who only want what they feel entitled to and who couldn't care less about anyone else. And yet people make fun of feminism. Do you wonder why? Imagine not being considered as a person, having a husband who the law allows him to hit you... Even the most aggresive feminists are understood this way. And please, if a man is a man then he will still be if he is with a strong woman, furthermore this will be the exact proof of that. If you want women just to cook and clean for you and stand there only looking beautifull than you are possibly afraid of a woman clever enough to understand that you are stupid.

Lynette Nortman The title refers to the scandal they _caused_, Lynette, mainly by having the temerity to stand up for themselves and other women.

Thanks Dr. I believe that I have expressed myself mistakenly, as English is my second language. What a shame on men to never admit that they make use of these services still to this day....! Have a good evening.

it's amazing how many views this video has ; I guess the 479 dislikes are people clearly disappointed this is not pornographic . The scandal I feel is meant ironically . The scandal is the terrible treatment women received in the 19th Century .

Anthony Brown It has plenty of views but also the shortest average watch-time, Anthony. I suspect you identified the reason for that in your first sentence! Those who watch the film in its entirety are generally very appreciative, however. Regards - Alan.

Dr Alan Brown Alan thanks . I was thinking if you like I could send you the DVd of the Man Who saved WW3 . I mentioned it in an earlier post . It's main virtue is it shows that Russians are not all the Brainwashed Communists that Cold War Propaganda portrayed and how one man can have an impact on World History . I am sure you have all the major documentaries . I have my own You Tube site . It's a modelling site Scale Models not the female /male variety . You would be pleased to see how considerate all the community is to each other . The Americans are particularly generous ; sending models as gifts to a number of other modellers . I can honestly say maybe 2 people have shown any friction ;and that is fairly mild . It does add another dimension to the hobby . which tends to be a lonesome hobby by it's nature .

Isn't it funny how it is so unexceptional to keep a mother from her children but it's completely acceptable to keep a father from his children, not fair!
