What an incredible performance. Marlene Dietrich, having see the horrors of war up close, really knew what this song was about. Other singers may have better voices but no one puts the feeling into this song like Dietrich. The line 'gone to graveyards everyone went" is heartbreaking.

+Alberto Benaim In 1955, American singer Peter Seeger, sitting in the plane, re-read it three favorite lines from a song from the novel by Mikhail Sholokhov's "Тихий Дон" (translated into English), which he wrote in his notebook: «Where are the flowers? The girls have plucked them. Where are the girls? They’ve taken husbands. Where are the men? They’re all in the army.»
Suddenly, one passenger said to his wife: "When they finally learn ?!" (he talked about his children). After these words in my head Seeger something united and he quickly finished the song, inventing a few verses.

the following year I saw her sing this on her theatre tour and met her , the most wonderful memory and she spoke so graciously to a 16 year old boy and signed my brochure simply `Dietrich`. The utter rubbish written by the scornful was just that her week long theatre performances were magical and no the lights were not dim. I saw her twice in 1973 and four times in 1975 during a 2 week season at Wimbledon. Favourite songs amongst so many `WHITE GRASS`, PLEASE VIEW THIS , and `when the world was young` & `BOOMERANG BABY`

WOW, this beautiful woman was a monument on her own. She was stunning; the way she dressed, how she had her make-up done, the way her hair was implacably done, the way she stood and sang, the lights were hitting her just right. I know Mrs. Dietrich was older in this video, but it is how older stars of Hollywood were, unattainable, untouchable. In today's world of many different media, the stars of old times were far superior compared to today's 15 minutes of fame.

She entertained the troops during WWII, often within sight of enemy lines. She saw with her own eyes the horrors and wastes of war, more than most politicians and armchair warhawks ever will. When she sings this, you get the anger and outrage and sadness that such things keep happening. Not to dump on those who have served and sacrificed....I salute you....and sometimes you have no choice....but we should always be working for a world with no war. But still...What a woman! We will never see the likes again. A true icon for the ages.

Besides getting over how utterly amazing Ms. Deitrich looks (for those who don't know, the dress she's wearing was specially made - 'constructed,' is more apt - for her, and she was the one who referred Marilyn Monroe to the same dress maker, for her amazing dress she wore at MSG to sing 'Happy Birthday' to President Kennedy), the song, and it's lyrics are more relevant now than in the past few decades.
This is a woman who not only watched WW2, but, was in it - supporting the troops.
She saw the toll it took on everyone.
In the past decade (since Bush-era), the slow, steady march towards a jingoistic, militaristic society - with endless video games, movies, and much more - all 'hypnotising' - lulling - people into a false sense of 'gung-ho-ism.'
The ultimate price is, as Ms.Dietrich sang; Where Have All The Flowers Gone?

As Theresa Stump says, Ms. Dietrich understands the meaning of ths song better than most. Her performance is incomparable. Her dress (if u don't kno, it was Ms. Dietrich who recommended her dressmaker 2 Ms. Monroe - which she wore @ MSG '62), is amazing. She also taught Lucille Ball how 2 do a 'flying' (face) lift

What a strange world this is , one man can compose this beautiful emotional song , then it's sung by a very lovely lady who cares so deeply , tragically it's about us killing each other for no reason. The history of the human race all in one performance of such a special song .

Coraggiosa, brava, intensa. Marlene coerente con la sua statura di grande artista, sempre in prima linea per sostenere la libertà e il no alle guerre. Grande Dietrich.

I completely agree with the other comments saying that Dietrich has made this song heartbreakingly powerful as a sublimely effective scream of outrage about the eternal costs of war, and that no one ever seems to learn the lessons of it. Having lived through the second world war both as a USO entertainer near the front lines and as a secret courier for the US government, she has seen much of the horror first hand and only someone who has experienced it can possibly convey it as vividly as she does through this song. Deitrich's recordings of this song should be preserved for future generations as a lesson to be learned before it is too late. This must rank as one of the most profound anti-war songs in history.
