I work in HVAC and one of the things learned over the time is that CO alarms only go off when the level of gas reaches a critical point (Detectors that display the level of CO in the environment are better, and will let you know if there is any at all, but the sensors also go bad over time. I'd recommend one with a built in battery, as they're designed to last as long as the sensor is, then you replace the unit once it dies.), but that CO also builds up in the blood over time by bonding to the hemoglobin and can cause low level poisoning through long term and repeated exposure. I'd recommend finding a way to stay warm that doesn't involve combustion if possible. Even if it involves heating rocks or water over a fire outside of your car then moving them into it. Looks like a fun trip though!
I'm from the Yukon and last year we dropped to -45 for a week. Our longest cold snap last year. But snowmobiling in -20 is my favorite thing. The cold wind is refreshing. And sledding is so fun! ( I have a 2011 RKM assault 800 cc 155 inch long track)

Hey Owen for cold weather camping what we did in the Army was wrap our wool blanket around our feet in the sleeping bag. We were told the feet are the body's thermostat and when they get cold it causes capillaries in the body to contract, restricting blood flow to preserve core temp. By keeping the feet warm we'd keep circulation up and stay warm at the expense of burning more calories.
Very true. I’ve slept in some cold environments and the first thing to get cold enough to wake you up are your feet. Another suggestion, remove your socks! Chances are, they’re wet. Also the heat from both feet together is warmer than the heat from each in it’s own sock.

"Its so cozy knowing that I'm in a warm environment, so close to being cold." This is the exact reason I love camping in the winter. Coldest night I ever spent in a vehicle was -50 (-70 with windchill) at Denali Training Area up near fort Greeley Alaska. We spent a month out there with the first week and a half living out of our HMMWVs. The heaters in those things barely work as it is and we had to keep turret hatch open because someone was up on the gun at all times pulling security. That let the little bit of heat we had out. When you were in the driver seat you could warm your fingers up a bit but the back two were just ice boxes. Shocked to this day no one lost fingers or toes.

Mav, I'm a vehicle locksmith by trade. Your Ford OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) remote starter has built in settings to prevent the vehicle from draining all the fuel and the battery power. First, you only can remote-start the vehicle for 3 cycles outside of the vehicle. The next is that your run time will be limited to maybe 15-30 minutes. This was done to prevent the vehicle from being left running too long and using up all the fuel. Cycle your key in the ignition lock and start it like normal to reset the number of start cycles to 3. Keep in mind as well, your hood has a trigger switch and the vehicle needs to see that and all the doors closed for remote start to work.
That kid's charm is off the charts. Because it's so chilly outside? Young homie? And a very capable survivalist I gotta say. Not bad prep work on the soup either. Modest as well. Impressive. And the book he has is Hooked. Nice touch. Small details are everything. My hat is off to you pal.
First video I've seen of this guy. What does he do for a living that requires him to do this? Or maybe more appropriately, what's his story that's led him to truck camping?
A lot of people in my youth managed to snag a full-homeoffice job and they use this opportunity to work from the 'comfort' of whereever they want to be as long as stable internet connection is accounted for.
Honestly, even just hearing your interactions with the store clerks, you seem like a genuine guy!! I am saving my money for my van life, so this gives me inspiration. Maybe I will see you on the road one day!
I think those Coleman heaters have an adapter so that they can connect to the large propane tanks and, yes, those small ones don't last very long. I'd recommend fitting a larger tank into the rear. I used to camp in a tiny tent which was smaller than the rear of your truck and cooking while lying down isn't that difficult and a hell of a lot warmer!
Yes they do. Also you can refill the small Coleman tanks with a larger tank if you don't want to lug around the large one. Probably not recommended, but it should be fine. Don't take my word as absolute though.
It looks so cozy. I remember when I was on a trip to Scotland, in mid November a few years ago, there were 4 of us, we spent the night in a tiny wooden cabin near a mountain and a lake in the Highlands, with sleeping bags and a small heater just like the one in the video. It was below 0°C and soo cold outside yet so cozy and comfy inside my sleeping bag. Will never forget that experience. It was lovely.

@@csmith563 Home detectors only read high levels, and will not register low levels below 25ppm, and only when that level is maintained for 28 days. CO builds up in the system and takes a long time to get out, so low levels build up over time. They sell low level detectors for use in cars and for HVAC use for people who may be exposed to CO regularly. The OSHA standard is only 50ppm for one 8 hour day, once a year. I saw you getting really tired early, a symptom of low level CO exposures. Will it kill you? likely not right away, but over time it will affect your long term health. The home detectors are for extream conditions not monitoring levels on the fly. Do a search for a good low level CO detector/monitor. Fun fact about remote start, depending on the year of your vehicle, it may only allow you to start it a couple times before not allowing you to start it. Also, remote start can be set to run for different lengths of time before shutting off. You can usually buy something aftermarket to get around those set times though. Best of luck.
My co-workers truck is like that. You get only two 10 minutes remote starts then you have to use the key to start it which resets the system for the remote starter.

Yeah, anytime Fahrenheit gets to negative numbers it’s freaking cold. Commercial walk-in freezers are supposed to stay around 0. On the scale, 0 is as cold compared to the freezing point as 64 is warm. -18 is just insane without real prep. His setup seems fine down to 0, but to go further needs just that extra push. Heavier insulation and/or better ventilation and a real heat source like a small wood stove, radiator or maybe a heat sink inside sleeping area that gathers heat from engine system during operation and dispenses overnight. It is a nice looking area with that fake grass and the way he did his roof.

I assume someone already mentioned it but you can easily refill those small green propane tanks off of a standard gas grill tank. You just need to buy the adapter but it will save you a lot of money in the long term. You just need to be able to store a gas grill tank somewhere on your rig and then keep a couple of greenies as backup if your main tank runs empty unexpectedly.

This is very good to know, thank you!

My family used to run a kerosene heater in the house all the time. Yet had kids in our high school die by running a propane heater in their tent. Aside from a CO2 detector, how do you know when you’re at a higher risk for CO2 poisoning?

Hey Owen for cold weather camping what we did in the Army was wrap our wool blanket around our feet in the sleeping bag. We were told the feet are the body's thermostat and when they get cold it causes capillaries in the body to contract, restricting blood flow to preserve core temp. By keeping the feet warm we'd keep circulation up and stay warm at the expense of burning more calories.
I ski 100 days a year and my feet are always hot and sweating even if the rest of me is freezing till it hurts.
You can also fill a bottle with hot water and keep it near your feet.

@@csmith563 Home detectors only read high levels, and will not register low levels below 25ppm, and only when that level is maintained for 28 days. CO builds up in the system and takes a long time to get out, so low levels build up over time. Fun fact about remote start, depending on the year of your vehicle, it may only allow you to start it a couple times before not allowing you to start it. Also, remote start can be set to run for different lengths of time before shutting off. You can usually buy something aftermarket to get around those set times though. Best of luck.

Potatoes looked good too. Looking forward to cold nights, eating hot food, and wrapping up in a blanket again.
bro same
No winter where i live in California 😭
@Ribby The Party Frog 100 degrees + all year round sucks even more. Literally it’s been 115 for the last week where I live in cali. I wish I could move somewhere colder but im too poor 😂
@Ribby The Party Frog it depends on where you live, where I live we have both hot summer and cold winter. Winter all the way for me, i hate suffocating hot temperatures
Here in CA desert summers, I stream shows like alaska bush people or ice road truckers to mentally contrast the heat...I swear it helps the ac cool the house down better.
Something about watching someone suffer in the cold in the comfort of your own home at 12:40 am is weirdly comforting
Wtf it’s 12:40 am for me right now and I’m doing the same thing
He know too much
320am for me lmao
Literally read your comment at 12:30am
Omg is 12.40 rn
I never thought -19°F Fahrenheit was that bad.
Turns out it is -28°C Celsius...
Imperial strikes again!
Same… thought it was 0c and a clickbait vid. But fair play that’s ducking cold
Slap some wind into the mix and that -19F becomes -28F 😂
Dude, I live in MN and I wouldn't try winter camping in these kinds of temps. Hats off to you Dude!
Same
Yup it was brutal last sunday
Is he in MN? I lived there back in 2015/16 for like 7 months. Endured ONE winter. Came crawling back to the west coast. Y’all are nuts over there!
@@samalander88 yeah, sure yabetcha. MN is not for the faint of heart. We Minnesotans come from hearty stock.
@@carmelleabron4058 obviously. You guys have crazy temperatures and the summers are disgusting! I live on the Oregon coast so I can handle 9 months of rain and gale force winds off the ocean but you guys can keep the humidity and the mosquitos and those CRAZY temperatures!
I have severe sleep anxiety, but to sleep I pretend I am doing one of your videos. Just camping in my room, making it a unique experience.
Quarter a cabbage, add some water, and chunks of canned corned beef or spam.. add any spices you like, take about 5 mins to prep, and 15 mins to cook.
Also with fried bacon ...! 😊
@@mariaherradi8732 very true!!!! Now I want bacon!!!!!!
😂
This man is making food in -1 degrees. You're a trooper. Shoutout from Texas.
And he has such good manners.
That’s what I was thinking the WHOLE time haha!
Could be somewhat dangerous though
Only if you get the kind meant for refilling. The green ones can be filled, but it is illegal to do so. Dangerous too.
It's neither illegal nor unsafe if you buy the proper adapter and scale. Don't let people spook you. Perhaps you could even try to learn something new
@@stephenmergner9888 just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. I was partially right. Filling may not be illegal, but transporting them is. . Federal regulations (administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation) prohibit transport of refilled “DOT 39” cylinders (of which classification small cylinders fall under). Violate that regulation, you’re liable for a fine of up to $500,000 and five years in prison. But if you want to live on the edge rather than spend $30 or so for a properly constructed refillable cylinder, go right ahead.
@@reno145 hhhmmmm, thats IF the DOT finds out....whos going to rat on this dude?
i've gone camping in negative 10s in a tent although my buddies were practicallly on top of each other in one sleeping bag
You know it’s cold when the snow sounds like Styrofoam when you walk on it
Love that sound
I’ve thought of investing in a heater for my rig. I’ve got a very similar set up as yours, but with the tall camper shell. Right now I boil water, fill a few of those flexible silicone hot water bags that grandma used to use for aches and pains, and sandwich them under my blankets a bit before bedtime. So cozy and no worries about rolling into a heater or carbon monoxide. Keep rockin!
But if one starts to leak you might have a serious problem.
@@ytwos1 from what I know they're super durable and can take a beating
@@gordythecat What if the zippy bag or wetbag leaks?
@@bluesmurf4646 what if the vehicle explodes while sleeping in it? What if, what if, what if what if.
@@super8bitvideos But what if it doesnt, but the zippy bag or wetbag leaks??
It's so cold the blinker fluid must be frozen.
He has the 50/50 antifreeze + coolant blinker fluid
Yup
Nope
I drive a ford taurus with remote start as well, only solution i have is to unlock the car, lock it again, then do the lock+start+start button combo you do for remote start.
