This concept of rewarding a dog when it's doing well has completely changed the way I train because it works! I encourage all dog owners to watch your videos.
I’m not sure how that’s such a crazy concept to you, why would you not reward the dog when he does well? You’re gonna get mad at it for doing the right thing? This should be a given. Even negative reinforcement training rewards the dog for doing well
@@BaronVonBielski Of course! What changed for me was to catch them doing well and rewarding them. To not say no! when they make a mistake. To reward them for just sitting quietly, for instance. A subtle change, but so effective.
why would it be a surprising concept to you? Isn't it common sense to reward the dog for good behaviors? Rest assured tho, most dog owners understand this basic concept already.
@@sheridan1700 Boy, I'm not explaining my self well. I have always used a positive reinforcement training approach, always. What I haven't done is reward them when (ex.) they're laying quietly next to me. Not after being naughty, not after anything, just hopped up on couch and settled next to me. I praise them, sometimes a treat, no big deal. Not necessarily what I did before. At least not formally, with intent. I might have hugged them and said, good girl, I love you. Something positive, but not with a treat (we have a puppy).
It's something not many people think to do (coming from someone who works as a dog trainer). Owners usually think "oh, I'll reward them if they do something I asked for", but most of them don't realize you gotta reward your pets for not doing anything wrong when you're not asking them for anything! It improves their behaviour a lot!

This is super helpful! I've been watching your videos for a long time, and it's great to see these common topics covered. I'm planning on getting a puppy next year, and the one thing I really don't want is for him or her to be chasing and bothering my cat. You explained it so well, I think I can adapt the same principles to train a puppy to be calm around cats.

Okay but how do you train this sort of stuff when the puppy doesn't already know it? Your videos are so good, but your puppy is laready super well trained and behaved--mine is at point 0 it feels like in comparison, this game won't help at all :( . I'd like to see a day 1 of this game rather than the puppy already know it so well ha ha

Surely in the mornings before they've had a walk and what-not they are bouncing around and full of energy? How do you prevent things like jumping up then? Thank you again!
My issue is that as soon my puppy smells the treat he goes crazy, jumping around, running and smelling like he has never eaten in his whole life😅
Great video. Very helpful. Is that a plastic bag or some other type of bag (e.g. silicone) in your treat pouch? Can you let me know the bag/brand? I have been looking for bags to put in my pouch that are easy to get the treats out quickly. Very difficult to find.

Yep, that is Wish or Splash. Can't remember which dog that is but you will see her/him under the couch in other videos. Seems to be that dog's favorite napping place. I have a dog whose favorite napping place is under her dog bed, not in it.
I've been trying to reward good behavior but my Maltese puppy just feels like a magnet to my foot. Even if I'm standing still, if he's in the same room as me, he lunges for my feet and doesn't let go until I distract him. It seems to be getting worse so I worry that he's associating getting the attention he wants with biting my ankles, but it's not like I can just ignore getting chewed on and walking away only makes him more interested. I probably need to figure out how to get him in a calm state first since he's usually either hyperactive or passed out.
im having similar issues with my bernadoodle. she nips at my ankles cause she knows she'll get treats when she listens to me and stops. so if i dont give her treats, she gets more and more aggressive and i dont know what to do. and when shes sleepy shes totally uninterested in anything, even with turkey, cheese, chicken, her treats, anything.. shes not interested when shes lying down. either super hyper or slumped. haha 2 weeks in and im struggling
You may have inadvertently reinforced the behavior by giving treats for stopping. The dog has learned that biting ankles gets them a treat.
@@dmaneri78 hahah looking back on my comment from a month ago, now shes doing great and doesnt bite ankles. i think i definitely reinforced the behavior at first but as she grew she got better!
I have a 7 month old and 4 month old puppy. How do I get them trained together? And a good name for your puppy is premier or miracle.

I have a 16 week old pomchi puppy that is only calm when she's abt to fall asleep or when she's just waking up. N it only lasts about 3 mins each. Does that mean this won't work for her?
I am back again, idk if you will read this we are just so lost. We learned recently that buddy was taken at 4 weeks old and he has horrible HORRIBLE BI. He has drawn blood daily, we are not trying to get the frequency to stop, we are trying to get him to learn to bite gentle especially because our little man is a BIG breed, he’s a mastador and at 11 weeks he’s 32 pounds
Can this still be helpful if your dog is one?
Ok so my dog is calm. She did pretty good. But what do I do when I walk and she bites my leg. The dog you showed never did but mine did during calm training. Then I try walking away and then she still gets me. What do I do then? The more I try to go to a place she can't get the more she thinks I want to play. Any physical reprimand I do makes her think we are playing so we try not to do that but there is only so much we can take before we get mad. Suggestions? Anyone?
Obvious that this puppy has been going thru this training. Need to start when the puppy starts out in hyper mode... good info but wish I could see this from day one when puppy was in crazy mode
There is no need to see a puppy in crazy mode. You just need to find treats that are reinforcing and start with tiny steps, it might even be beginning with teaching a calm settle first. Rarely do I get footage of dogs behaving badly because I break the steps up small enough. With my training, it’s all about preventing rehearsal of behaviors. The last thing you want is for the dog to practice biting you, so I’m definitely not gonna do it with my clients dogs or my own puppies to get more views. What do you mean by low value kibble?
thats a good question, if you have a Labrador perhaps there is no such thing. I have a video on treats here - ua-cam.com/video/6P_MYUhd_BY/v-deo.html for a lot of dogs different types of treats create a different response in the dog- some making the dog extremely aroused others not so much, so basically I say "low value" to mean that the food doesnt make the dog too excited.

9 weeks but hes a big boy, I think he was 15 pounds at 9 weeks

My dog has an ear infection. Now i have to give him ear drops 2 times a day. But he is really scared of it and wont let me come near his ear with the dropbottle. Please help me to solve this problem. I want to make him comfortable with handeling his ears for cleaning and medicinal purpose.

Emily's versions of chin rest and presenting body parts is awesome. I'm sure she's got a husbandry video too. Remember dogs learn through association..... so make the first time they see the bottle, smell the bottle a positive association. Break down the whole thing into tiny steps and heavily reinforce each step with high value treats. Present the bottle, mark, reward, repeat. Then move closer, mark, reward, repeat. The whole way till u can hold the bottle at ear. Slowly work your way towards the end goal of drops going in the ear. This takes much longer but is so worth it when you're bringing any new or potentially scary stimulus to your dog. Then big jackpot of treats (heavily reinforce) when it's complete if the dog remained still and pretty neutral as the drops went into ear. hope this helps somewhat

Well i have to start from the beginning because my dog is already scared. So i will take tiny baby steps to take his fear away and make him comfortable with ear drops.
In the future i will make sure to do these steps right from the beginning and not when he has negative association with something new.

I know what you are dealing with. Try cleaning the ears of a squirmy 4 lb. Chihuahua! Chirag Patel of Domesticated Manners (he is in the UK) has a good video on this very topic, "Ear Treatment Training for Dogs." The video is 9 years old so just scroll down through his videos till you find it. Make sure your volume level is turned up cause Chirag can be hard to hear in the video sometimes. Desensitizing an animal to something it fears or dislikes takes time and a lot of patience from the trainer. This won't be "fixed" in a couple of training sessions. I train with multiple, short sessions each day. Go at the dog's pace and end the session on a happy note. Don't push the dog past his comfort threshold. Every video about this talks on how it's the flow clothing that gets the dog's attention. My father's huuuge quote unquote ""puppy"", gets on my EXPOSED ANKLES whenever I walk in his house. I wear shorts, they are way way higher than where he bites, it happens whether or not I wear shoes (my shoes do not even have laces to begin with), and I'm the only one he does it to. Last time he bit so hard that he left a literal mark in my skin. 😖😖😖

Most people will not have the patience like you do here to teach the dog not to bite the pant legs. For me, I like dogs that do that. They use their teeth, which are their hands, to understand the world around them. With age a lot takes care of itself. This also applies to dogs that you get what you give and they learn from the result.
Maturity doesn’t always solve the problem especially if the dog finds the behavior reinforcing and not everyone can afford to wait and hope the dog grows out of it. People with kids, older people….even if the primary caregiver finds the behavior fun it might not be a great situation when the dog repeats those behaviors with others. Mouthing and biting is normal behavior but it is also up to the handler to provide clarity to the pup on when and how using their mouths is appropriate.
@@rachelwilbur9512 I am not criticizing. It's just my experience (depending on what I'm capable of) that you can avoid a lot of problems with clicker training. For example, that the dog goes backwards when he wants something instead of jumping at me. But biting in the game, in my opinion, is better handled with authority. This also helps in other situations, as not every single life issue can be clicked. A master word helps miracles. The problem is that many want to avoid this or cannot afford it. Therefore they try to move forward with alternative methods. The "alternative" already includes the possibility of accepting bad habits, since one is supposed to proceed in a species-appropriate manner and not roughly. I regulate biting immediately, especially with old people or small children. After all, a dog is not a person and needs appropriate emotional address.
I mean if you have a puppy who is already calm of course it’s easy. My puppy is jumping around and acting crazy. Not very helpful 😅

Heres a formula for solving any unwanted behavior ua-cam.com/video/6vAk98000wc/v-deo.html But the basics are that you want to reinforce the behavior you do want the puppy to do in the same situations. So videos on no biting would also work, because you are reinforcing the absence of the biting/humping/jumping or leg grabbing. So you approach, mark and feed a treat before the dog does the behavior.

Positive reinforcement isn’t done in Mother Nature training like this is a major problem. help dogs understand in terms they understand in their language. Teach your dogs what you don’t like and let them be dogs. Socialization is the key
This is easy when you have a calm tired puppy but this is not reality. Tired of videos that show calm quiet pups. Show me an older puppy that's testing you - then show me what to do about it.
The key is to train your puppy in training sessions when they are not aroused and over excited. Because no doubt for your puppy in particular biting you is more reinforcing than any treat, so you pick a time your puppy is not interested in biting you and calm and relaxed and then start to condition the stimuli that usually makes your puppy want to bite, in tiny steps where the puppy remains calm, if the puppy gets excited stop training, or go back a step. when you puppy is biting you in real life, your job is to interrupt and redirect to something you do want the puppy to do, or change the picture. You need to build the interrupters in training sessions when the puppy is calm to then use in real life. Trying to train in real life when the puppy is too excited is not going to be the most effective or reliable way to train.
