This is how a test is done. Thank you so much!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice Tim! Thanks for sharing!
Many thanks Kenny! :)
Thank you for this video, i will get it now for my A6400 ;)
Excellent review! Great dog too :)
Cheers David. He is mostly a good boy!
Great review, many thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
brill review .. am on a6500...am hovering on a zoom to buy in my budget and this vid made my mind up 70...350.. .no rush just yet with this pandemic keeping me indoors..so maybe a little cheaper wen I can escape my lockdown ..thanks ..look forward to more from you .
Glad you liked it Tony. Since I'm a bit slow replying to this comment have you now picked up the lens?
great video and review, TFS
Thank you very much!
Great video! I'm shopping for a long lense for some animal watching in Yellostone Park in Aug. I think I'm going to get the e70-350. Thanks again.
Good choice!
Thank you, this was very helpful. I like hard numbers and your test shows that there is no statistically significat difference between them. As an APS-C only guy it makes it clear I'll get 350 as it has more range, is more compact and as a cherry on top - also cheaper.
I miei complimenti!
Ottimo lavoro. Molto utile 👍
I like your website!👍👍 Tell Frank hes a great model!
Thank you! Frank has just been groomed so he'll look better for his next video! :)
thanks that help a lot
Awesome video as always 👌 would you recomend this lens for my a6500 for shooting kiteboarding from the coast?
You'll have no trouble shooting kite boarding with the E 70-350. I'd definitely recommend it.
very good... thank you
Hi. I checked out your photos between the Sony 70-300 and the Sony 70-350. I thought the 70-300 photos looked a tick sharper . What is your shooters experience ? Thanks.
Nice comparison !!!! Have you tried the two side by side for video?
No I’m afraid not.
can you show and compare just 2 pics of landscape shot at 300mm on both lenses ?
Excellent comparison!
What do you think about the sigma 100-400mm for e mount ?
Thank you! The Sigma is very nice but the AF isn't quite as fast as the Sony 100-400. I'll be doing a comparison video soon.
What do u think of new Tamron 70-300mm against both of these?
Thanks for the videos Tim. I seem to get no keepers with my dog running towards me on my a6300 and 70-200 f4 using Zone/Lock on AF. It always back focuses around my dog's neck/chest. I get slightly better results when using single/flexible spot though.
Is the a6400 that much better with the Zone AF? Or is it my lens holding me back? Or something else?
I found that the lock-on focus areas never worked that great with the a6300 and you'll probably have more success using the non lock-on modes like you've found already. For dogs running towards me I like to use Zone and position it towards the top of the frame, this way when you are shooting at your dogs eye level it's more likely to lock onto them and not the ground which will happen with wide area. I assume you are using AF-C focus mode and a high enough shutter speed to freeze the action? I never did any autofocus comparisons between my a6300 and a6400 and I've sold the a6300 now. But the a6400 is definitely snappier and the animal eye af is really helpful for pet portraits and slow movement but never works when Frank is running towards me. Hope that helps!
@@AlphaShooters hy what do you think ehat would be the difference, using both on a sony a1, the 70-300 in aps-c mode too?
That A9 processor in the A6400 is a big help. I was taking photos with my 18-105mm of a flying seagull, it was coming right at me. It kept that bird in focus 100% of the time. I didn't use any fancy focus modes either, I just raised the shutter speed so it looks nice and crisp. Left iso on auto and aperture was left on the fastest, which is F4. I am amazed by the camera performance. It is great for wildlife, maybe not pro level, as it is not going to shutter speeds like 32000 but, it goes enough to capture anything in a sharp way. I'd recommend the A6400 to anyone, but you also need a lens that can keep up with it.
I have ordered the 70-350 to use on my A6500. Enjoyed looking at you analysis of the two lenses and look forward your field test of this lens.
Thanks Roscoe. It will definitely make a nice pairing with the a6500. Hope you don't have to wait too long for it!
@@AlphaShooters Is the A6400 firmware updated to correct this 70-350 lens?
Will be in the older A6500?
@@biogons14 There is no new recent firmware update for the a6400 that mentions support of this lens, however it's not always required. I just did a quick test with my a6400 and with in camera corrections turned on corrections are being applied. Unfortunately I don't have my a6500 anymore so I can't check with this camera.
Is Frank fine ?
Thank you for a nice review!
Thank you! Frank is well thanks and looking forward to his next video :)
Can I use this combination of a6400 with 70-350mm lens for bird/wildlife photography?
Great review. I choose between 70-200F4 and 70-300. Which one is better in dog's photography in your opinion ? Now I use Sony851F.8 with sony A6300. I will probably upgrade from APSC to full frame in the future.
Thanks. I'd go for the FE 70-200 F4 G since it has the faster f/4 aperture compared with f/5.6 that the 70-300 has. However, with Tamron announcing their FE 70-180 F2.8 lens which is due out in Spring next year that could also be an option and I'd expect it to be a similar price to the Sony FE 70-200 F4.
@@AlphaShooters Yes I heard about new Tamron. I hope it will be as fast as native lens

This UA-cam video was recorded on the Sony a9 with the Sony FE 24 F1.4 GM lens and the Rode Wireless Go microphone.
I’m trying to decide on which to get for the a6400 to take surf pictures, I do like the better low light capacity of the 70-300 but my main concern is the zoom factor the closer I can shoot the subject the better, which one offers more of a close up on the aps-c sensor?? Thanks for the help
The minimum focus distance of the E 70-350mm is variable from 1.1-1.5 m (3.61-4.93 ft) depending on your focal length. The FE 70-300 on the other hand has a fixed minimum focus distance of just 0.9 m (2.96 ft). You'll probably find the extra 50mm of reach more useful with the 70-350. This would be my choice unless you are planning to swap to full-frame very soon, plus it's cheaper!
Greetings from México, Tim
Thank you for the wonderful review!
I am a Nikon D500 shooter & Nikkor 70-300mm. I mainly take sports and birds & birds in flight photos. I’m seriously considering getting the new Sony a6600 & pairing it up with the Sony 70-350mm.
My question for you is do you think I should go for the Sony 200-600mm Instead? Do you think that the Sony a6600 can handle that lens? Do you plan to do a video do with the Sony a6600 paired up with the Sony 200-600?
I know that the Sony a9 is the best Choice here but my bank account says different. 🤣
Thank you in advance
Thanks Gurley! :) I haven't tried the a6600 but I do own the a6400 which is more or less identical to the a6600 except it doesn't have the IBIS (in-body stabilization) and also has a slightly smaller buffer, everything else is the same when it comes to AF performance, tracking and image quality. I would recommend the a6400 over the a6600 which is overpriced, unless you really need IBIS. The E 70-350 has Stabilization in the lens so no need for IBIS in the camera. The 70-350 is going to give you similar reach to your Nikkor 70-300, if you felt this focal length didn't limit your shots then you should be fine with the 70-350, but if you always craved more reach then the 200-600 could make sense, it works great with my a6400 but it's certainly much larger and heavier than the 70-350. I've used the 200-600 on the a6400 in this video: ua-cam.com/video/GEwgW9cVO6k/v-deo.html - You can also find my a6100 vs a6400 vs a6600 comparison article here: www.alphashooters.com/compare/sony-a6100-vs-a6400-vs-a6600/ - So save your money and get the a6400 instead and you can put what you save towards the 200-600 if you think this lens makes the most sense for your shooting. All the best, Tim
Thank you very much for your advice Tim, I truly appreciate it!
Great review! Could you please test their performance in a7 riii or a7iii in crop mode especially on their focus and PQ performance, very interested in these 2 lens!
There really shouldn't be much of a difference in AF performance in crop mode but I do want to do a similar comparison probably with the a7III.
Great lenses comparison video.
What's your thought on the Sony 70-350 vs the Sony 55-210?
Thanks Danny. It's night and day between these two lenses really. I have the 55-210 and have taken some nice shots with it but you will need good light and you won't want to pixel peep too much. It's not a bad lens but it's not a great lens either.
@@AlphaShooters I asked because I will use it mainly for outdoor
Heading to South America for a cruise and at certain area like Cape Horn or the Beagle Channel, I would need to zoom in. I currently have the 55-210 so I wonder if I should get rid of it and buy the 70-350 or would 55-210 be good enough for this purpose
Any thoughts?
Have you tried them indoors with your dog ? I’m looking for a lense for dog agility which is undercover or indoors usually, thanks
No I've tried them indoors I'm afraid Camila. They are probably not the best lenses in low light. The new Tamron 70-180 F2.8 would be a good option, I've just picked up this lens myself.
Excellent review. What I'd really appreciate if you had a followup with comparing the two lenses for tracking video, your dog would be brilliant subject/talent. I am also interested in the lens focusing motor noise while shooting video. Thank you for the great work.
Thank you very much Miklos. I don't shoot a great deal of video but will try to do a comparison soon and also take note of the motor noise, with stills both af motors are pretty quiet.
Can you test 70-350 DX lens on A9/A9II/A1 ? I know I will get only cropped files. But that's enough. I just want to get absolute best AF with small package.
The 70-350mm gives me 50mm additional while the 70-300mm is about a half stop faster than the 70-300mm.
No problem for me with just being able to use the 70-350mm on APS-C formats - when I shot Canon, I had both full-frame and APS-C bodies. I always used the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS ii lens on my APS-C 7D Mark-2...
Is there any problem with not having a panning mode on either of these two lenses like the 70-200mm f.4 G OSS has?
I shot a few photos with the a7R IV + 70-350 last week and it worked very well. I will be creating a gallery of a7R IV images later this week and will add them there. Just keep an eye on alphashooters.com as I'll drop them on the homepage. If you do a lot a lot of panning with very slow shutter speeds then you'll probably find it a little more challenging to nail sharp shots but it's certainly still very doable.
Hi - I have just received my new 70-350 lens and find turning the zoom to be very tight - not like any of the other sony zooms I have - Did you find your copy tight or easy and smooth to zoom in and out ?
Hey Ron, mine has a fair bit of resistance probably more so than my other Sony lenses, although I still find it fairly easy to use. It does need a little resistance as otherwise when you are shoot upwards there's a chance that the front element drops down unless you are always holding the zoom ring.
I'm trying to decide between these two lenses. I have an a6500. I'm leaning towards the 70-300 lens but that extra 50mm of zoom seems to make a difference. If I ever get an a7 then the 70-300 lens would be better, right?
If you weren't planning to go full-frame then I'd recommend the E 70-350. But if you are thinking about picking up an a7 then it would make more sense to go with the FE 70-300. Both are great lenses!
Thank you. Then the 70-350 is a better choice for me now. The lighter weight and higher zoom will be nice advantages.
hi! have you tried the 70-350mm in a full frame body without crop mode? if so, how was vignetting?_thank you
No I haven’t yet. Will try it over the next few days though and let you know.
I have the same question...
@@capturetheworld3008 Me too :)
I just tried this out. No vignetting at 70mm, but as soon as you zoom in the vignetting gets larger.
Just came for the dog but stayed for lenses
I've heard some talk about the lack of a focus limiter. Couldn't some sort of software be put in for a focus limiter button?
Not that I'm aware of unfortunately.
what did you use to record the view finder?
I use the Atomos Nina V.
Fabulous and a absolutely super German Shepherd dog - could you please show us a couple of photos each of what you describe as "Out of Focus - Slightly soft focus and Critically sharp focus" -
I’ll have a look but I probably didn’t keep all of the shots from this shoot unfortunately. But I’ll definitely add examples to my future videos!
can you please explain are the images out of 55-210 is sharp enough for budget wildlife photography with a6400
The 55-210 is a great budget lens. Works well with decent light but the autofocus can struggle a little when the light fades. It's not as sharp as the 70-370 but if you don't crop in heavily and pixel peak then this isn't a big issue.
@@AlphaShooters thank you
Amazing review - no fuss - direct to the point . THANK YOU. PLEASE PUBLISH SAME TEST FOR A73
Thank you! I'll consider a similar test with the a7III, just got a few more videos I'd like to get out first.
Did you faced any issues because of 800 grams of weight on small APSC lense, I am planing to get 50mm sigma art which weights almost the same, will I face a lot of challenges?
Sorry for the slow reply Arnab. Nope I've not had any issues and I've used heavier lenses like the 100-400 as well, but I'll normally support this lens with my hand and won't let it hand from my neck.
Hey,
Thanks for your sharing.
I have the Sony a6000, And I want to buy a new lens.
i like to know, which one (between the two lenses) it is better for me to take? Thanks
Pick the 70-350
The E 70-350.
Can you set the focus hold button to focus limiter.. I have it custom set to digital zoom.
I'm afraid not Luke and apologies for the slow reply.
For a Sony α7R IV, you would recommend going with the 70-300?
If you want to make full use of all of those megapixels then the FE 70-300 would be the better choice. If you don't mind shooting in crop mode then the E 70-350 makes for a really nice light weight setup. I use the E 70-350 quite often on my a7R IV.
So much for the new "XD Linear motor"
Yes I was surprised not to see more of a difference in AF performance. Although often the AF performance comes down to the camera more than the lens and the af on the a6400 is already very good. If Sony ever put the a9 chip in an APS-C body then maybe this would show the advantages of the XD Linear Motor.
@@AlphaShooters yep, agree with you on that. Also it's probably why the a6400 is better with adapted lenses than it's predecessors.
MVP
Hello. Thanks for best video. I am not a professional photographer and I have a question about 350 Lane: is it work with Sony Alpha a7 iii?
Best regards
The E 70-350 will work with the a7III but only in crop mode / APS-C mode.
@@AlphaShooters Thank you so much for reply. I bought it and am happy with.
Could you make a autofocus keeper test like this but with sigma 100-400mm on a6400?
I've owned the Sony 70-300 and recently purchased the Sigma 100-400. My experience with the 70-300 was that it had an edgy, busy bokeh that I didn't care for. The Sigma, although I've only had it a few weeks, is sharp and has an overall more pleasing bokeh and offers more reach and greater compression. Personally I don't know why anyone would buy the 70-350 APS-C version given that most serious photographers migrate to full frame. The Tamron 70-180 f2.8 is noticeably superior to all of them and with a modest crop the results are likely better than the 70-300 or 70-350. So why bother with the Sigma 100-400? Compression, it's a different look.
I shall. I've been so busy with other stuff lately I've not had chance do any videos this year. Hope to get this out next month though!
Which one is sharper at 300mm with A6400 ?
The FE 70-300 (at least my copy is).
I have the 70-200 f4 with my a6400 and although shorter, I think it's the better choice than these zooms.
Kian J why is that. Please be specific
@@dereksuperstrong1210 OK, I've only seen comparisons online rather than owning all these three lenses, but the 70-200 F4 does have faster aperture, better sharpness than the other two and much better contrast than the 70-300, it's inner zoom, and I'd assume that the AF is also better especially in lower light conditions; the only thing I'm not sure about is the build quality/weather resistance. The 70-200 isn't exactly expensive these days which I think is due to its weaker performance on the FF in the edges and corners, but using it on APS-C at this size/weight/price I consider it better than the other too, hope that helps.
If you don’t need the extra focal length and don’t mind the additional size and weight of the 70-200 F4 along with the extra cost then it is a better choice.
@@AlphaShooters it's all about compromise unfortunately.
70-300 US link is for the a6400
Thanks for catching that Justin! Updated now. All the best, Tim
Could you compare the 70-350 against the 100-400 on crop sensor. Would be interested to see what double the price gets you 👍
If you view my 200-600 vs 100-400 video then I do shoot the 100-400 on the a6400. There's not a lot between the 100-400 and the 70-350 when it comes to keepers but the 100-400 is sharper, you have the extra reach and the option to put on the teleconverters. The construction and feel of the 100-400 is a lot nicer as well although it's certainly heavy when compared with the 70-350.
Tim, great job! Would you do another with these same two lenses on an a9 or a9ii, and an a7RIV. And what no one is reporting about, how useable are the APSC shots out of each of these cameras. Thank you so much!
Thanks Joe. I do keep meaning to test the 70-350 on my a7R IV in crop mode but haven't got around to it just yet. Might get a chance this week to shoot some shots but probably not another comparison video for a little while unfortunately. Will try to update this comments with my thoughts once I've got some shots in!
