Hello Aussie! I've watched a lot of your videos, love the electronic stuff! The sticker your playing with at the beginning of the video is a production sticker. The transmission itself was built in Toledo Ohio at a GM plant there. To put it simply, the 4L60E (GM code MD8) is essentially an electronic version of the older 700R4 and is roughly the equivalent of a 4 speed version of the old Turbo 350 as far as strength is concerned. The massive 4L80E was the heavier duty version more like the old Turbo 400's. There were also some intermediary versions like the 4L65E which had 5 pinion gears in each planetary gearset. This was only briefly done as in 2002 they made all the 4L60E's with the stronger planetary gearsets. Harsh engagement is usually either a worn plastic checkball in the valvebody, or there is a plastic accumulator that goes bad causing harsh engagement
The valve body construction reminds me of a 2 layer printed circuit board, with traces (passages) and vias (holes through the steel plate between the two halves). You could even think of the ball bearings and valves as diodes and transistors.
The 4l60e's are noted for 3 4 clutch pack going bad due to restricted valve body , They used them in trucks vans s10's pretty much anything with a v8 or 4.3 v6. Very reliable IF they are maintained.
Yeah, as others have said it's a 4L60E made in Toledo Ohio. In the States a used 4L60E sells for $650 regularly... Rebuilding a 4L60E is relatively straightforward, probably wouldn't cost more than a couple of hundred dollars and a cheap 4L60E sells all the time for $1000~1500!
wow, sounds like I need to fill a container with them and sell them to the US :D. over here they are disposable!, not worth a lot unless fully rebuilt and fitted, then you may get a profit!
It's funny how different nations valuate certain used/rebuilt auto parts differently isn't it? Recently I watched a vid of a guy in Germany who bought a complete used Ford posi rear end out of a junkyard for $30!
A trans rebuild by a competent specialist trans shop here is more like $3k. It's around $500 just for the kit and that's mostly stock, (no Corvette servo, shift kits or superior clutches).
The vertical one behind the pump is for torque converter lockup. Bit of fun, plug up the controlled leak in that valve, the converter will lock up after it shifts into second gear.
did you guys find the problem that cause the shutter when engaging? I done one and it was the torque converter that I replaced apparently when the torque converter pumb fails the torque converter won't be able to engage smoothly but rough, but it would be interesting if you guys find another reason ?
digitalrailroader yeah but it was a variation called an M30 transmission , and a lot of things were changed as well as 30% more on 3 rd gear, with a totally revised internal , different torque converters , different shift points in the ECU mapping and stronger
The good ole 4L60E...When they work, they're awesome; When they break, it's usually catastrophic. I've got one in my '04 GMC Sierra. 110k miles with no issues and regular fluid changes. Fingers crossed.
The older service manuals used to have explanations of how an automatic transmission works, it's quite interesting. Think of a bunch of electronic circuits, with oil instead of electrical current flowing through. But instead of switches, and diodes, they use check valves, spool valves, and servos, bands, and clutches.
That's actually the 2nd and 4th band/drum. Automatic transmissions (except for Honda automatics) rarely have a dedicated clutch for each gear. For example, in the 4L60E you have there, 1st gear in Drive only applies the Forward clutch. 2nd utilizes the 2-4 band and the forward clutch, while third releases the band and enables the forward clutch and 3-4 clutch. Overdrive enables the 2-4 band on top of the forward clutch and 3-4 clutch. There are additional friction clutches as well, such as the low-reverse clutch (used in manual 1st and reverse), the reverse input clutch and the overrun/coast clutch that's enabled in manual 3, 2 and 1 to allow for engine braking.
Haha at 7:30 ......Look at that. A Precision Engineered maze. :D That's either got a use, or someone was bored when programming the CNC machine one afternoon..... :D Thanxx for showing, -BoomBoxDeluxe. _21st March 2014, 02.25_
I recently paid a bit to have mine rebuilt. The bushing failed and the gears broke. I forget it it was the front or the rear gears that broke. Anyhow, there is no mechanical governor in there, it's electronically controlled. The valve bodies have issues with the check balls and fail. Some of the servos are made out of plastic too, depending on the application. My rebuild after towing converter and shift kit, came out to $2k USD.
i used to have a pulsar with a 4 spd jatco in it and i made the mistake of "netruel dropping" it i soon found out why it was bad lol.... about 5 mins later.... bang. had no D but had 1st and 2nd direct drive but the weird thing is it would still creep in D with O/D turned off. i think i tore 1st and O/D out of it.... so for the next month i drove it like a manual lol but the slip was horrendous until finally i went to the servo pulled up at the lights and went for 2 but instead went the wrong way and put it in N so light turned green i looked down because i realised i was moving forward and i had went the wrong way looked it was in N and going forward ?!?!? overshot the bowser tried to get reverse.... it had forwards and reverse both selected somehow because it would try go forward but with huge resisitance.... $830 later my problem was solved :S
It's not the clutches mate, check the gate that allows the right amount of fluid into the box per shift. It will be the solenoid on that gate guaranteed.
308 Merchant with new CTV transmissions they are now outperforming manuals in shifting and are a lot quicker now than manuals so they don’t really rule the wasteland
Many woeful one wheel skids have been pulled through these poor boxes. MANG MANG MANG... Own and drive an auto 3.8L VR Commodore every day. Gear box seems fine except sometimes it takes a while to shift and it sometimes stalls going from P to D. Been doing it for 10 years and i put it down to the torque convertor. Could be wrong but not overly concerned. Estimated 400,000km's, though the odometer broke a decade a go at 183,000. Can't go past them for price, availability and reliability.
Quite a bit more complicated than a manual. My can is in the garage. The front suspension is poorly, the lower front mounts have rotted away and one of the springs has snapped, thankfuly the bottomless pit bank of mum and dad will be covering the costs. It is not cheap. You can see from this why automatic cars are a lot more expensive, extra complexity combined with parts will always add to cost, not to mention the people who design these things will earn a very nice wage.
I am surprised this type of transmission is still in existence, DSG that VW uses is a far better gearbox, one major problem with this box are the electrics are in the same oil, DSG has separate oils for each part so the electrics are always in their own oil as they found the oil caused problems to the electrics,

7:45, that's a piece of art!
The production sticker shows it was built in 1997. Sounds like a learning experience.

It's probably a 4L60E made in Toledo, Ohio here in the states. The 7HDD may be an identifier for what kind of car it goes in on the factory floor.
7 denotes the year 1997
Ed can you send that rain up here to Queensland

fun fact: they used the 4L60E all the way up to 2009 in the Chevrolet Trucks equipped with the 4.8L V8

The Transmission is a 1997 , the 7 denotes that , Toledo is where the transmission was manufactured in the USA.
I had a similar issue with my vs gearbox with slamming into gear it was a shifter solenoid that let go

Thanks Ed, ive never seen inside one before.
A very complex and really clever mechanism, lot of good engineering :-))
Would that have come from a rear wheel drive? I didn't see any out put shafts
Yep its a RWD 3.8L Buick V6 powered car
not bad. didnt think that they had planetary gears in them
You are killen me man. I wish you'd rebuilt your three turret German drill press.
That'd be a GM 4L60E transmission, based on the old 700R4.

Awesome video. always wanted to know more about a trans
wtf is that background noise at 8:27 sounds like rain but it doesnt rain in aussie....
It's rain. They say it's rain, and it does rain in Australia
its PRND321 NOT PRN321 ;) Looks like a 4L60E trans
i used to have a pulsar with a 4 spd jatco in it and i made the mistake of "netruel dropping" it i soon found out why it was bad lol....

how many times my brother blew one of these transmissions!!
lol yeh, I see tonns of them in the scrap bin and wrecker, can be had real cheap due to the abundance of them
hahaha 10:15 that cracked me up!
i know it's pretty off topic but does anyone know of a good website to watch new tv shows online ?
@Krew Abdiel I watch on Flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
So what is all that noise on the roof? Rain? A tree? If its a tree, Why not just trim it?
Rain of course. Its a tin roof and when it rains it might be loud and drown everything out but its a grand sound to listen to if you wanna take a nap.
PRND321
Drive is 4th overdrive

Nice vid of my bad memories :)
I removed, repaired/reconditioned and fitted auto's for 4 bloody years :(
A manual box "rules the wasteland "

You people and your extra gears. PRNDL FTW!
very nice ED

Around 4:16 I can hear Make It Bun Den playing in the background... I see you have a good taste in music along with metal Ed :D
yeh I like that one, reminds me of a certain mission in Far Cry 3 :D. it was the FC3 soundtrack I had on that afternoon
Aussie50 FC3 was an awesome game, really loved that mission ;)
so keep up the good work!
Ive put many of these in trucks and camaros lol first time seeing inside one tho
looks like a turbo 350-400
They don't show you from scratch what to do.
its fookin rainin. i cant blv it :P
Lube definitely makes everything fun!! Ō_õ
Ed: Scope this out:

Cool. Use drinking or atleast having a choof or what

Hello
All ova the joint like a mad womans spew
wheres brad when you need him xD
10:10 nice ;)
What's up with your mates arm? He looks young, but his arm looks like 80.. Poor guy.
yeh, burns are a terrible thing, I won't go into detail on it out of respect for him.
Oh damn, poor guy. Luckily he still has full use :)
Man these autos look like shit!
How would you rate the autos in the falcons Ed? EB- onwards
A good automatic lets users select all the gears. PRND321
mate you can't teach people by guessing stuff.!
+Eli Malka autopsy videos are not training vids, its just myself and or friends taking shit apart for fun :D
+Eli Malka The full setting of fluid is going through the gate for each shift when that solenoid is stuffed making for a harsh shift.
rip
Not made in Australia . Made in Toledo Ohio .
