  • The Jacksonville Skyway is an automated people mover in Jacksonville, Florida, United States, operated by the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA). Opening in 1989 with three stations in Downtown Jacksonville, the Skyway was extended in 1996 following a conversion from its original technology to Bombardier Transportation equipment. It was expanded again in 1998 and 2000. The system currently comprises two routes across 2.5 miles (4.0 km) of track, serving eight stations, and crosses the St. Johns River on the Acosta Bridge. There is currently no fare to ride the Skyway, which had 1.2 million passengers in 2014. ~Wikiepdia

I live in Jacksonville and I like the skyway, but it needs more stops to make a huge impact on the community. Stops in San Marco, near the Sports Complex and the Brooklyn area are what I would like to see. I might make a video on this topic soon.

This was supposed to be the urban leg of a much larger system was it not? Much like the Detroit skytrain was basically just the urban loop without the lines that were to radiate from it...

Initially yes, but that was cut down in the 80s. It's now being developed to grow 4x in size over the next decade.

Pretty cool but unfortunately it seems like more of a gadgetbahn than a real public transportation system. Didn't seem like anyone was riding it.

The initial project was cut back due to severe budget cuts and lack of full federal funding, but over the last 20 years it has been slowly expanding as funding has been made available. It currently cover 8 stations over 2.5 miles. It will expand to cover 10 miles and add 14 more stations.

@@KevinFields777 yeah with making it into another gadgetbahn. U²C is not good. It's like a Elon Musk fan made the plans

They need to expand it east to the Sports Complex and south to the Riverside/I-95..

    Similar to Miami-dade Transit Metromover

I want to build a cat sized monorail like this in a dog pen elevated so the dog goes crazy when I roll the cat above him in it and the cat is pointlessly terrified of the dog. It would be wooden with dolly casters for wheels. I figured out how to incorporate a monorail into street traffic. There would have to be two deep three inch gaps in the traffic lane that contains the rail. The frame that holds the side wheels would sink into the gap. But the gap would be too narrow to trap a car wheel. Just a bicycle wheel or a child's foot. The gap would expand into a tunnel under the pavement to fit the side wheels.

Great idea. But does it provide transit in the right areas
    Thanks Tim

Yes, it currently connects to 5 bus stops, 2 water taxi connectors, two parking garages and two parks, and in the future it will be adding 14 more destinations that cross-connect with other transit and places that people actually go to, including connecting 4 neighborhoods together.

I wonder how many times the word "boondoggle" has been applied to this "transit" "system".

Can you please give us an update ~ will Jacksonville preserve this system?
While it may work to enhance tourism, I doubt that it facilitates commuter access to the business district. The cars, the platform, the range are just too small to attract commuters. Overall, it seems terribly impractical and costly to maintain.
I wonder, did the taxpayers who financed it have their capital investment re-captured? Does the system run at some profit or is a loss sustained every year? Has a fare been imposed? I marvel at the empty platforms which lead me to think it's not worth the cost of maintain - but who knows for sure??

It was fare free when I went - last time I heard from friends who visited the system they running the cars into the ground until they can no longer operate. The fact that there is a RFP out for replacement is not a good sign for its future. Too bad - I thought it was such a fun unique system for florida...

Oh, no doubt that it is. I would love to ride it as it gives such a delightful view of the City. But in all honesty, is it practical? Cost effective? Doesn't look it. But I hope whatever happens, it's all for the best.
