    I used the pintle hitch and lunette eye for my M416 overland trailer. On this video I compare the options and explain why I went with the pintle.

    Thank you for your video. Good information. Was going to change out the pintle system on a M1101 trailer but now I am thinking of keep it. Again, thanks.

    Great overview of the top 3 trailer-tuck connections. Thank you.

    Us old retired military types have just learned to tune out the banging. It's just part of the deal. But they do work. I use the type with either the eye or the hook that spins, so no binding at all (off road, of course.) My truck and trailer are in the UK and I'm prepping them for a Trans Africa expedition. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why the UK/EU won't allow you to use electric trailer brakes or any of the Max Coupler type setups. Grrr!! ;-) But the old reliable NATO pintle hook is legal so I'm sticking with it.

    I don't know about anyone else, but I enjoy hearing road noise, engine noise, and (good) rattling especially off-road. It just gives me this sense of doing something and allows me to understand what's going on

    FYI, you can get a swivel Pinter hitch and or get/make a swivel lunette ring. Swivel on either rotates 360 degrees and won’t bind or roll the other over.

    On a side note, if you have the original lunette eye on a military trailer, as in the M416, the eye does rotate in a socket built in.. great video!

      Yeah, and I forgot to mention that you can buy them like that too. I put a link in the description though!

    One thing to remember is that the lighter your tongue weight is, the more rattling you will here. Great review!

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  5 років тому +1

      Good point. Even with a high tongue weight you'll still get noise off road though! How does your trailer rattle off road?

    • @shaweehillsworkshop4226
      @shaweehillsworkshop4226 5 років тому +5

      It rattles some, but not much, mostly when I hit a big bump or have to stop suddenly. I've ridden in vehicles with less tongue weight on their pintle hitch and they rattle non stop!

      What about on the washboard roads? I actually imagine washboard wouldn't be so bad on the pintle hitch.

    Hey man great topic I agree with you, the Pintle Hook and Lunette Ring are great. My m105a2 came with this setup but the only problem I had with it was the constant metal on metal and the banging was driving me insane so I went with the Ball Coupler set up...and I love it!

    • @RevereOverland

    Military panel hitch trailer for vehicles I have row full rotation. The portion that is a permanently attached to the trailer spins 360° so that if you flip the trailer or the vehicle, the other also does not flip.

    Interesting. I wonder if the limited range would prevent a trailer from rolling in the first place. I've seen a lot of turtleback style trailers on their sides.

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  5 років тому +2

      I think in a light trailer like mine the limited range could be a positive. They do make lunette rings that can rotate 360 degrees that I should have mentioned in the video!

    Very well done review and I have both and removed them for the ball type so wondering how is the Army type suited to 100klm highway use.

      Check out my comment about the two competing Australian versions of the pin style hitch (360x360 rotation). I've taken my 1.5 metric tonne trailer up over 140kph without any hassle, except from the police.....

    To be fair, the set up you have there is wrong, one half has to be able to swivel to be safe. Your setup with both locked into unswivelling perameters will as you highlight take the vehicle with the trailer. Personally I love the Pintle/Lunette ring "NATO" hitches, the versions available in the UK are made by "Bradley Double Lock", these are designed and made for the military and way exceed the vehicle's tow potential. I have a Defender and an old Military Sankey trailer, it doesn't knock and bang because the weighting is correct in the trailer and the proper Bradley or Sacol Lunettes are thicker than the version you show there. They are also 3"/76mm rings. smaller rings have to be less thick to allow for twist that you don't have in the hitch design shown - hense I'd not even tow on the road with what you have on the table. Golden rule to pintles: one MUST twist. :-)

      No that's not wrong, the vast majority of pintel setups do not swivle.
      Ball hitches don't swivel either.

    The military uses them for a reason. The noise part does suck though lol, just crank the stereo up and forget about it lol

    Off road lunettes swivel, eliminating the rollover problem

  • @henrycolestage7650
    @henrycolestage7650 3 роки тому

    Couple of things I might add. You can get pintle hooks that rotate. That makes it almost 360' of travel. You can also find lunettes that rotate (Sankey trailers, for example). BUT!!! YOU CANNOT HAVE BOTH ROTATE! They will lock each other up and disaster will happen :-0 Another advantage is if you live where the amazing US/AUS/SA off road hitches are not legal. In Europe and the UK (now two seperate places) they are not allowed. That leaves you with the venerable 50mm ball...ugh! But military pintle hooks are type approved, even in Germany. As a Yank in England (the exact opposite of you!) having to use a 50mm ball, and even worse, hydraulic overrun brakes, drives me crazy.

    Great video mate. Very informative. I can't pick your accent, it sounds a bit British, a bit American, a bit Australian. I suppose the registration plates shown in the video give it away....British?

    That set up without one end rotating is total SUICIDE!!!!!!. If the trailer flips over it will pull the towing vehicle with it, MADNESS video.

      No it's not,

  • @nzkees12

    You made the wrong choice, just look at the size of the pintle hitch and the trailer you are towing.....You named 3 hitches, there are lot more hitches available to suit your requirements than the 3 you named.
