i believe you scoot/ shift because you have smaller hands but if your hands are big enough id suggest pivoting / "stretching" to those next notes a pivot isnt exactly a stretc but without moving your thumb sliding the postion of your hand up or down the bass

Other than for some speed licks I don‘t recommend that. I suggest you check out my book for an in depth study of bass technique.
