I just love your videos, Simon, your didactics is fabulous. Your tempo exactly what I need, not too fast not too slow. And I find your lessons easy to grasp being totally logical. Thank you so much🙏💖
Just found this video on UA-cam, and I am amazed how good this video is - clear, simple, to the point, easy to grasp, with good visual demonstration - a great example, how things should be taught. Subscripting right away!
Wow, thank you, Simon. What another great video. When I first learned scales/chords, I'd play a scale, then the major, minor, seventh (Dom), diminished chords, then move to the next scale in the Circle. As a kid, the diminished was not a chord I gravitated to... not till I got into blues and jazz that is. BTW, no one ever taught me that half-diminished even existed; only [fully] diminished. Either I had less than comprehensive teachers or music and how it's taught has. Anyway, thanks again for everything you do.
Thanks a lot Simon. Tutorials are great. I am really learning something. I am a moderate piano player and was always doing the same tricks over and over. Boring.. Your tips and lesson are opening a complete new pianoworld for me, how to approach my improvisation. I am improving ! I feel it. Its great. Even if you are not quite talented like me , practising over and over gets me somewhere. Keep up the good works. Greets from Amsterdam
Thanks dude! Glad you like it 😊 (btw, did you see the new workshop I added in the Academy today? It's a solo analysis of one of Kiefer's solos and I think it will be right up your street!)
PianoPig ok so I’ve only watched the first few minutes of it but I can already tell this is going to be really cool. That bebop type feel sounds great over the hip hop type of beat in the background. Really cool style! Thanks!
Simon..nice lick ..doing it about 70% speed. Been trying to incorporate it into my playing. C to Db to its 4th (Gb) go back a minor 3rd Eb.. Then go up to the 4 (Ab) back the minor 3rd to F.. F goes to itsn4 (Bb)..that goes to Eb..Eb falls back a min 3rd..which is a C. I am not looking at the sheet music, but I think that is correct. The best..
Think "half-whole diminished scale" as a blend of two different diminished seven chords. In this case, those two chords are A°7 (A, C, Eb, Gb) and E°7 (E, G, Bb, Db). Together, they form a scale, and the notes are C, Db, Eb, E, Gb, G, A, Bb, and higher C. Notice, you can see two different chords: A-C-Eb-Gb and E-G-Bb-Db.
Very helpful. I like your approach because you jump to the root's relative minor, trace its fully diminished 7th, then do the same with the 5th of that relative minor. It just makes identifying the notes easier.
When playing the half whole c diminished do you use this right hand fingering 123 12 123? With that scale there is no way to break it into two groups of 1234 (right hand) as you can with B half whole diminished (right hand thumb on B and on F). Also, when you play Eb, Gb and A dim do you finger exactly like C so that there are only three fingerings to learn? Like if you start B dim half whole on thumb, do you always start D dim half whole on third finger (right hand)? Lastly, do you practice these scales in left hand or combined parallel or contrary?
is there a video on how to use scales to improvise? do musicians switch between scales or do they stick to one? are the chords they move to and from in the same scale? I'm smol brain
Hi PianoPig Which application do you use to show these keyboards and please how do you connect it to your keyboard. We have electronic piano and Mac. All the best
Hi, I'm looking for a method to improvise on all the scales without having to remember them. Could you recommend something? I have only found the solution of buying lots of roli lumi in parallel while leaving the scale keys lit. Thanks!
Nice description. Certain scales like C HW dim have stuck in my head. It was easier to go up a H then up a 4th.eg. CDb Gb then back to Eb to E then 4th to A. then F# G up a 4th to.C. Back to A up a H to Bb then up a 4th to Eb then back down to Eb..same as before. Should be the same notes as the sheet music. I just noticed another pattern as well as the HW diminished scale..we.continue going backwards a min 3rd..then forward.
I will probably mess around with some of these scales, but at some point you gotta question when to stop being a dictionary and when to make some music based on emotion and not internalized patterns.
Excellent lesson Simone!
Thank you for showing that lesson.
Thank you so much for the free pdf!!!
You're welcome!
Cant wait to expand my musical repertoire, this is a very well put together professional video.
Great teaching it will aid people to get in the zone!
Yeah, something I was looking for. That's the sound of jazz there, some diminished runs over 7th chords. Tasty

No worries man! Enjoy! :)
Great pattern. Really easy to immediately start using. Play it as triplets, or eights/sixteenth, sounds cool with the 3 note groups displaced
Yeah exactly! It's fun to play around with the rhythm with patterns like this, great way to practice it too 😊

Thank you for the video! I'm working on it!😊
Duke Ellington's version of Overture from the Nutcracker has a unison saxophone line that uses this lick
Wawu I love this ✊ thank you!
My pleasure!

they switch. Sometimes very little, sometimes a lot. Giant steps is one with lots of switches.
You're free to do whatever
Also, don't play scales outside the realm of practice
Welcome back bro
So cool!!!
Glad you like it 🙂
... I'm not a piano guy, but I found the musical ad lib "hack" useful. Thank you.
Nice lick..

Thanks dude! I use Keyscape for most of these vids :)

You will never be able to improvise proficiently without learning your scales. They are the alphabet of music

HI....DO YOU MIND IF I CALL THE HALF-WHOLE DIMINISHED SCALE: AN ALTERED-MELODIC SCALE. IF NOT, I'LL BE GLAD TO HEAR WHY!!
Simon Sir 👍 super..
hi my maestro, I'd like to know what happen with the pianopig web site ! it's not working
thumb up!
Seven modes how to do use song piano?
Sir do we have to sight read scales while playing along or its just a technical improvisation one?
Is a chicken or an egg
What do you mean sujeth?
Beautiful pattern! I just think it would've been better at the end with a emotional chord.
❤❤

The piano into to this lesson sounds identical to the intro to "Til The Cops Come Knockin'" by R&B recording artist Maxwell
