  • @thefitnesslife4988
    @thefitnesslife4988 7 років тому +17

    I hated the lag in my 2012 gt auto. I was mid bolt ons. Cai, throttle body, offroad x pipe, catback, running lund race tune. Still lag when I mashed the gas. Until I changed out my gear ratio from the shitty 3.15s to 3.55s. Really gave me that instant torque I was looking for. Converter is nice but expensive. Changing rear gear ratio is cheaper alternative.

    • @3SevenStangVids
      @3SevenStangVids  7 років тому +5

      From a track standpoint especially with an auto 5.0 you'll be lucky to get into the 11's without a converter. Like i replied to your other comment, i ran my buddies 5.0 which had 4.10's and i was on the stock 3.15's and i was still faster. going to anything higher than a 3.31 in an automatic will actually slow you down on the long run in those cars. you'll stil be pulling 1.8 60 fts at the track. Gears will of course give it a better feel but dollar for dollar the converter will make you much faster off the line. Take two 5.0's both stock one has a convrter one has gears, the one with the converter will win everytime. auto to auto obviously speaking. manual with 3.73's will tear ass all the way out of the whole on a slick lol

    You know 'EXACTLY' what you are talking about here man! I got the 2014 3.7L, and started on mods... I installed my own 410 gears, upgraded the throttle body, BBK CAI, and Bama 91 race tune. I really thought I had something, as it all drastically improved the car; But,...going back to what you talked about, there was something missing in the process for me, and that stock auto tranny does have major lag, regardless of how I changed the shift points. The 410s woke it all up more than any of my other mods, but you just solved one really huge problem I kept missing all this time! Yep, the torque converter. Initially, I kept hoping TCI, or someone would make a shifter; But with this tranny, I think I now know why. It is what I call a very 'lazy' transmission in stock mode, and it doesn't help that Ford had to put it into a learning mode to continuously take away everything I would ever try with it in the past. Now, I am looking to change out that stock converter - Any suggestions on stall speed with 410 gears? Regardless, thank you, awesome video, and information!

    I just had a 3200 stall installed from precision industries out of Ohio, and with a lower 3.55 gear it really launches out of the hole alot better. Mine is a 5.0 but I also really like the 3.7 v6, and I would love to have one.

    V6 guys...We called these things "stall converters" back in the day and we calculated based upon torque curve and read end gear how much stall was needed. A 3.7 is a high winder so you need this mod to get you into the power band quicker...however...do not expect these kind of times running that 2.73 gear. Even the Performance Package 3.31 is tame for the street IMO. From what I have seen and read the 3.73:1 gear is THE first mod for these V6 cars. The stall converter is a great add forsure, the the gear is the weak link on the stock factory performance. Think about that for a minute...

    So say i put a torque converter ,and I'm just cruising on highway
    Does the rpm stay high like having bigger gears?
    My 2nd question is what is the best torque converter for a 2011 3.7 with 3.31 gears and jms transbrake with the potential of getting a procharger in the future
    FYI I tried fitting 3.55 in mine and eventually I gave up ang got a gt diff with a 3.31 in it
    That's how I'm a 3.31 now and won't touch that rear end again
    At the end thank you for having this channel for our 3.7s cause honestly it gives us a really good Dose of motivation on keeping our cars and try hard to upgrade them

      The BBK adds good torque much lower in the power band which helps feel when driving normal. They have dyno sheets all over the internet. Too many people focus on max hp and not enough on torque, and at what rpms an engine is making torque. The 3.7 max tq is rated around 4K rpm. The BBK gets good torque gains at 2500 to 3000 rpm which is huge IMO for day to day drivability and fun factor. This video here about stall converters is 100% based upon the 3.7 torque/hp curves which max for both are reached at over 4000rpm. My advice. get the 3.73s first and a 93 tune. The BBK tb will make a diff in driving, but the 3.73s will totally transform the car. Just my old school racer opinion.

      Juan Carlos Mariano no they are nowhere near the same thing. Upgraded torque converter allows your transmission to rev faster and higher by pressurizing fluid, and allows your engine to spin independently of the transmission. Gears change the ratio at which your driveahaft and rear end spin together at. Higher gear ratio will just mean your spinning the wheels faster with less rotation of the driveshaft and transmission. Higher stall allows your engine to rev more freely and indepently of the transmission resulting in getting into the powerband quicker.

      3SevenStangVids thanks. If you’ve given only one to choose between the 2. Which one would you rather have, gears or TC for a Daily driven 3.7 auto?

    Gas mileage will suffer without upgraded gears. Unless you remap the lockup.

    So which one would you recommend first mod for 3.7, TC or gears?

    • @nathant2414
      @nathant2414 5 років тому

      Stock gears are too tall. TC going to get you off line but you’ll be revving out for days. Get the gears so the car can follow thru with the work that TC puts in off the line

    Changing the gear ratio would do the same but instead of just quicker off the line youd gain that plus more get up and go over most of your power band like a set of 4.10gears.. cost less .about 2/4 hour job just depends who is doing it. No tune and cost maybe around $275. Maybe $320 with shipping and thats everything youd need to do the job. Down fall loss alitte top end gas mileage and your mph on your dim/ cluster well be off and need to reset. Not sure how much off tho

      gear ratio will not get you off the line the same as a TC. my friends 5.0 with 4.10's was still pulling high 1.8 60fts dead hooking. another buddy of mine is on stock 3.15's with a 4c stall and cuts 1.5x 60 fts and blows the guy with gears out of the water. this being on a 5.0. Justin murphy who just hit 12.9 in the 1/4 in his 3.7 with 3.73's is still pulling 1.9 and 2.0 60fts. he would be running 12.5 or faster with a torque converter. im not saying a TC is a substitute for gears , but will make your car faster from a dig than gears will. 3.7's need both. 5,0 can get by on stock gears and going straight to a converter. Fastest all motor 5.0s run on stock gears or barely upping them to 3.31's with a 4c or 5c converter

      Not mod for mod. But a naturally aspirated modded 3.7 can and has put 3-4 lengths on a yote. Thats .3-.4 in the 1/4. I ran 12.9 @ 110 stock. Plenty of 3.7’s autos and manuals have run 12.1-12.2-12.3 with suspension and bolt ons.

      AHHH you just can't see that they are removed in this video. I had seen other videos where they were visibly laid down, I assumed for a sub or exhaust noise.
      Your removal makes sense, just thought they were down.
