They make hinges that allow the door to open outside the edge of the cabinet; I *think*, for this exact purpose/reason: rollout shelves. My dad did the same thing to a pantry cabinet; grumbled up and down, did some research, found them and saved rebuilding mom’s pantry. Although for shop furniture your solution is much quicker and likely less money, just wanted you to know they exist.
That is good to know! Thank you. Learn something everyday.
@Karen, do you happen to have a link or maybe name for these hinges? I recently did a kitchen island for us and I completely overlooked this. I caught the problem much later in the project and really shook me lol. I'd love to have an alternative solution besides a quick and dirty shim solution. Although it worked for me and it's for me and my family, if the opportunity arises to build one for a customer, I'd definitely consider this type of hinge. Thanks in advance
Blum Clip Top 155° Zero Protrusion Hinges, Nickel, Face Frame, 5/8"Overlay By Rockler. Although, you still need to place your pullouts above/below the hinges locations. But beware, $$$$$$. @@NirvanaWoodWorksbyJanie
I like it Good job 👍
Thanks Donnie!
Good stuff Bro
I like that kind of projects.
Thanks!
Brand new subscriber to your channel…I’ve been seriously binge watching as many videos as I can. Well done!!! I really appreciate you showing and talking about your mistakes. Can you provide info about your table saw and your working table? I have an older, poor quality table saw, and a much smaller shop, that is not quite setup like yours 😬😬😬. Thanks again for your videos. Loving them.
So glad they are helping you! I have a 3hp 36" sawstop. You can see the work bench on my website. Walkersww.com under plans
I love it, A real woodworker, that makes mistakes, shows it and fixes them. seems every other woodworker content creator is perfect and never makes mistakes.
Bravo, Good job. Great idea for storage, Ill be starting mine soon. Thanks
Thank you. I figured if someone else can benefit from my mistake I may as well show it lol.
This was great and you are hilarious. I love your attiitude!
Haha thanks! I appreciate that.
This project looks good. The only thing I would do differently is putting a lipped edge on the pullouts, all the way around and at least 1 inch in height. (In your case, 1 inch height + 3/4 shelf = 1 3/4 total)' This way, stuff won't be falling off the shelf. At some point, you'll be adding more stuff to the cabinet and things will start to fall off. Has this happened to me? Absolutely!
Thank you for showing the real life of building shop furniture. I watch different videos and think I'm the only one that make these mistakes even after woodworking for so many years. So few actually show the mistakes and now I can feel normal again.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Means alot. I used to try and give the mistakes but now if I make them I just show it and hope it helps someone lol.
Okay, I'm not commenting about the hinges or anything else. My comment is that a Triton track that you're using with that makita
I like watching shop projects the most. It always gives me something to think about while I'm in the shop working. I always see things that would make my space even cooler.
They are my favorite to build for sure.
Oh wow. Didn't realize that you were also. I'm on the Central Coast - Salinas, near Monterey.
Yea born and raised in Nor Cal haha.
It's so nice to see that even woodworkers on UA-cam make mistakes. I need a few sheets of plywood to get my garage/workshop organized
Haha I make mistakes constantly.
@@WalkersWoodworks as do I lol
I definitely need to build this. I rarely change my blades because the stuff is scattered all over. I'm constantly looking for my fingerboards and such.
I also just happen to have 4 sheets of 3/4 sitting unused. 🙃
Nice! You only need one for this one haha. Well and a 2x4 sheet of 1/4.
@@WalkersWoodworks oh, I also happen to have 8 sets of those "euro" slides laying around because Amazon sent me a double order! 🙃
There you go! Gotta love that.
I just bought some blades and was thinking of making a blade storage cabinet but this makes a lot more sense. I have a bunch of wood waiting for a project (some call them 'scraps'). Thanks for the ideas. Remember what happens in the shop (mistakes?) stays in the shop.
Haha I like to let the world see my mistakes so hopefully they won't have to make them.
I knew exactly what the problem was just by your thumbnail lol 😂. I made a kitchen island, for ourselves, and once everything was installed, painted and ready to be assembled and in place…. disaster struck 😭. I was absolutely shook and just kept staring at it and wondering "how could I have missed this? How did I overlook this?" 😂. You definitely learn from your mistakes. I'm just glad it happened to me personally vs a client. Although I definitely maybe would've caught it before delivery/install day. My solution was the same idea you did. My drawers were much bigger and wider tho. So I had to completely break apart, literally break apart, the drawers. I even had a huge cabinet roll out one that I designed to put pots/pans in with a small upper level for the tops. It worked out at the end but my shims are much more visible as I installed hinge lights that turn on automatically when the doors are opened. They just clip on to the already installed euro door hinges. They're kinda bulky, hence why my shims are much more visible to allow for the big cabinet drawer NOT to catch/stop on them. Loved seeing you mess up, in a good way 🤣🤣, the same way we regular ppl do too. Thanks for sharing!
Haha I'm just a regular guy! I like sharing mistakes. Hoping someone can learn from mine and not have to go through it. I'm lucky I was just using pull outs and not full blown drawers like you. That must have sucked. Glad you figure it out though!
Great video keep them coming like seeing how you are building up your shop hopefully get my own shop built behind my house and move out of my garage lol most likely not baby number 2 on the way kids aren’t cheap lol but love them anyways lol
Appreciate you watching! Hey, you never know. I never thought I'd have a shop either.
Nice but I think the saw blades are a bit exposed to damage. If you could secure them better I think it would be better. If they fall off the concrete floor could damage them.
Yea. I'll be careful opening it
Enjoyed the fact that you left in the video your goof ups. I related to some of them and recall the same thing happening here in my little work space, once or sixteen times.
Haha as long as it's not 17!
To drill at the angle, first drill a straight hole into the side of a 2-by, then run that through the table saw to cut the angle you want. Now you have a nice guide block.
That's a good idea!
As I was watching this vidya on the UA-cams, I thought, a guy can sense a bit of VGG in here. Seems, like me, you've been watching a bunch of Derek lately. 😆 Perfect. 👍
😂😂 he is definitely my favorite UA-camr. I had to bring some of it into my content. Plus that's just how I normally talk so lately I figured I may as well just act normal instead of trying to "act" people seem to relate better.
If you watch the video before this I'm actually wearing a VGG hat and FSM hoodie.
@@WalkersWoodworks 😆 I noticed the hat and hoodie last time. We clearly have similar taste in entertainment. I too am a fan of VGG and the entire MT crew.
Haha right on! I've thought about starting a channel for my chevy luv build but I'm still not sure. If you're interested in that you can check it out on Instagram @ls1luvtruck
@@WalkersWoodworks way ahead of you. 🤣 I've been following the luv build for a little while now. And I just saw you posted about the Nova. What are plans with it?
What's the cost of that sheet of ply?
$$$$$$$ depending on what grade.
🗣️🗣️
Enjoy shop projects here
Awesome!
or all you needed to do was change the hinges.... MUCH less work
🤷♂️ what can I say, I like to try and fix stuff with what I have.
@@WalkersWoodworks I get it - but you created more work when a $3 set of hinges would have solved the problem
Thanks for letting me know. I was under the impression all full overlay hinges would put the door in this position. 🤷♂️ I'm not a cabinet guy haha.
Let's see more shop projects. The price of wood has put fine furniture projects on hold for me.
I have a few planned!
Amazing ✊🏽 🙏🏼🖤
Thank you!
how did you not see the error in Skecthup?
Cause I didn't attach the door I just made it to size.
had the same issue on mine. I ended up routing a channel on the inside of the door for the runners to have clearance.
That works too.
