Definitely buy an external GPS for greatly improved accuracy. I bought the Dual XGPS 160 for $125 and it gives accuracy of your path on the track with like 1 foot or less. It connects to *multiple* satellites at the same time and triangulates position with incredible precision.

      Great Tip! Thanks!
I keep debating on if I should go for an external GPS or just get a dedicated track data logger like the Garmin!

@@milkforcoffee +1 to what Matt said about the external GPS making all the difference. I use a Garmin GLO which connects via Bluetooth and now it plots my path on the map perfectly. The Garmin refreshes GPS points at 10Hz where as my android phone only does 1Hz.

@@Stushbush Thanks for the update. It seems to be the consensus that an External GPS will make a huge difference.
I will look to do a review on the Garmin Catalyst in the future as I've just picked one up and will be spending some time with it this season hopefully.

Excellent overview of the app. I use it for autocross and it has been helpful. I used a QStar external GPS and still find the location data inconsistent. Between keeping the QStar GPS and the OBD sensor in sync on my phone for logging autocross runs, I find the process distracting and didn't use the app much this season. That might just be how I set mine up so don't take that as a thumbs down on Track Addict. My goal is to have a (relatively) simple set up that gives performance data with an overlay of steering input for coaching after events. Thanks for sharing the review as I think it is one of the best overviews I've found.

I could see it being a potential issue for shorter courses like auto cross or sprints. I've noticed that the timing is +/- 0.3 seconds compared to a lap timer at the last time attack competition I participated in.

It’s a good app, thanks for the review. The app also has many tracks in Europe, where I live.
I’m using it coupled with Veepak ODBCheck BLE+ and an iPhone 8. It’s important to review the TrackAddict webpage for compatibility of devices before purchasing the ODB transmitter.
Regarding the data, the only video overlay missing (for me) is brake. I can get a calculated reading to analyze afterwards but I didn’t manage to show it on the video overlay, which would be cool. I suspect my car doesn’t have a brake potentiometer and, therefore, no direct reading.
Oh, and yes, and external GPS would probably solve the track positioning problem you indicated.

Good stuff. I've never been on a track but I just bought a car that id like to try. I have to drive 3 states over to find a track tho. Next summer I plan on doing that and I'd love to record it and show all my buddies how fast I am (aka people passing me all day because I suck)

There has to be tracks in your state! There are always tracks out there. If not try autocross. It might be a lot more accessible for you! I did an episode on it ...check it out!

    Great video .. summary...
I was wondering if you can tell me what the Accel X,Y,Z is that Track Addict captures .. possibly Lateral, Longitudinal and ?? acceleration?
Have you used Race Render .. I'm just now looking into that to see if it is something I want to use for analysis between session...
BTW .. I see your video was on .. Mosport .. now CTMP .. great track .. did some racing there ... if you are with the BMW Club .. have you tried the ... Autocross .. that is where I'm spending most of my time now ... great bang for the $$$

It will depend on your phone (how it's mounted) as well as your car. Whatever sensors are available to use, Track Addict will most likely use them. If your phone doesn't have an accelerometer than it won't measure G for example. Longitudinal, lateral and height positioning are dictated by GPS. The better the sensor the better the result. An external GPS/accelerometer might be the way to go.
At that point though you may consider a Solo timer or a Garmin Catalyst which his what I'm using now and intend to review shortly.
Race Render is pretty straight forward but uses it's own proprietary rendering software. While you can customize and get all sorts of data points, it's not the most user friendly right off the bat but easy enough to learn.
I haven't been able to participate in BMW Trillium events recently due to personal reasons and scheduling but I intend to get back into both the school and AutoSlalom. Agree...incredible bang for buck!

What do you even get with pro? Just more save files?

    • @milkforcoffee
      @milkforcoffee  Рік тому +1

If you head to the track often you will only get a few recorded sessions for free versus the pro. So if you are looking to analyze your data from different tracks or multiple session then pro would be a useful upgrade.

@@user-qu4zr1rl4j this isn't a GPS navigation tool. It's a GPS lap timer. You need something different.
