I thought years ago for sure this guy would be the next Bob Dylan ..this song hooked me years ago ..I think we live in such a fast moving plastic world that most folks don't even listen to good music anymore ..just noise ..well I guess that's OK..because it just makes artist like Mr.pug and his songs even more special for us souls that are listening for other searchers..thanks Joe for sharing these beautiful songs that sooth the ones that enjoy that form of medicine..God bless..
"Will you recognise my face, when God's awful grace, strips me of my jacket and my vest, and reveals all the treasure in my chest." For me, this is the most well written song of all time. Wildly underappreciated, but then again I kind of like that about it.
Astonishing when he entered my world and has never been anything else. When I have introduced people to Joe Pug it always has the same profound effect that introducing people to John Prine or Bob Dylan has had. Music and poetry that can change lives. These songs help me see the beauty in a riven world. Peace.
I was very fortunate to have seen Joe Pug at two different shows about 10 years ago. After the show each time Joe stayed outside and talked to each of the guests and they were as Invested as I was. There is a very natural sense about him. It was like we could talked all night about anything. An incredible experience both times. God bless you Joe Pug. You really touched my life. 👏🙏🙋♀️
Why aren't there more artists like Joe Pug? Why isn't his name more widely known? Listen to the lyrics. You belittle and hate and malign the kind of person he describes. You don't want someone who's "come to test the timber of my heart" or "get broke, then maybe bum a smoke". You don't want someone who's "come to ask them for a lot". That's a hard friend to satisfy. That's a man or woman of moral integrity. It makes your life hard when a good friend calls you out and rightly so, much less asks that you reciprocate the support they've shown you. Better to marginalize them and let them languish in loneliness and depression and homelessness. Better to find someone with the privilege who won't have a need to ask for so much. The reason there aren't more artists like Joe Pug? You don't respect the human being he might have been if fate had dealt him just a slightly worse hand.
Saw this incredible young man Oct. 18 in Minneapolis on his 10.00 Tour...if he comes to your town, you better not miss him!!!! He is just wonderful......
Lucky enough to hear Joe sing this to about 100 people at the Ark in A2. Got to spend a minute talking to him after the show. Can’t replicate the experience.
This was one of my favourite songs a long time ago, forgot about it until Nightvale surprised me! Choked on sunflower seeds sillily trying to sing along.
this man is a new legend! ive never seen a better live gig in my life! knowing people who have seen Dylan and say that he could learn a few things from Joe Pug was a Highlight! the man is almost mythically brilliant!
I so want to learn this song - I am an amature ( not very good really) This is the song between my daughter and I- she introduced me to it , with love in her heart and tears in her eyes - she had something to say to me - so cool to do it in such a beautiful song, the words have meaning for us - as I am sure they do for others- but her B day is in 2 weeks - I just thought about it - too late -
Not quite in time to learn it for the arrival of your daughter, but maybe my tutorial might help you on another occasion: ua-cam.com/video/b-WORcfBhjQ/v-deo.html
I love this video because the folks in the tavern he's playing at have the same look of wonder on their faces as the crowd I was in the first time we saw him in Minneapolis. I feel so lucky that we've got this guy around for another 20-30 years.
I love to watch the video of a song because it drops subtle hints of what the song is about. I grew up loving folk and joe pug is such an amazing discovery.
All I can say is I am very impressed indeed. It’s incredible how much talent there is out there. I’m sure Joe gets a lot of Dylan references but he deserves his own credit. I’m late to the party but I’ll be taking a look at Mr. Pug.
I think the past 10/15 years has seen a resurgence of poets and performers, of great story tellers. This type of song writing is not the rarity... for it exists and is abundant. The rarity stems from the fact this type and level of artistic expression is rarely promoted or celebrated... and remains more of an underground vibe...
Yeah I've come to know the wishlist of my father I've come to know the shipwrecks where he wished I've come to wish aloud Among the over-dressed crowd Come to witness now the sinkin of the ship Throwin pennies from the sea top next to it And I've come to roam the forest past the village With a dozen lazy horses and my cart I've come here to get high To do more than just get by I've come to test the timbre of my heart Yeah, I've come to test the timber of my heart And I've come to be untroubled in my seeking And I've come to see that nothing is for naught I've come to reach out blind To reach forward and behind For the more I seek, the more I'm sought Yes, the more I seek, the more I'm sought And I've come to meet the sheriff and his posse To offer him the broadside of my jaw I've come here to get broke And then maybe bum a smoke We'll go drinkin two towns over after all Oh, we'll go drinkin two towns over after all And I've come to meet the legendary takers I've only come to ask them for a lot Oh, they say I come with less Than I should rightfully possess I say the more I buy, the more I'm bought And the more I'm bought the less I cost And I've come to take their servants and their surplus And I've come to take their raincoats and their speed I've come to get my fill To ransack and spill I've come to trade the harvest for the seed Yeah, I've come to trade the harvest for the seed And I've come to know the manger that you sleep in I've come to be the stranger that you keep I've come from down the road And my footsteps never slowed Before we met, I knew we'd meet Yes, before we met, I knew we'd meet And I've come here to ignore your cries and heartaches And I've come to closely listen to you sing I've come here to insist That I leave here with a kiss I've come to say exactly what I mean And I mean so many things And you've come to know me stubborn as a butcher And you've come to know me thankless as a guest So will you recognize my face When God's awful grace It strips me of my jacket and my vest And reveals all the treasure in my chest
Hey Joe! Great song dude! Great album, you're a new favorite. We missed you at the Soda Bar in San Diego, we where there 2 weeks prior to see Gregory Alan Isakov. Can't wait to see you next time. Keep up the good work! It's rare when music gives me goose bumps, I love it!
Its a grand show!! you're going to have a great time...met him after the show he's really down to earth and quite funny! saw him in Decatur,GA in April earlier this year
Listen to the rest of the Nation of Heat album, it's all good. Also, check out some of his more recent stuff. Sharpest Crown is a damn good song, Hymn #35 is possibly his best.
Thanks Joe man, thank you. One of my favoutite artists, an inspiration for my own work. Would love to share a jam and a jar with you. Keep her lit a chara, till the misadventures of man cease.
Unbelievable and extremely moving music. I've created my channel to feature underground bands and one of the bands I featured showed me this song. Been a fan ever since!
@phonemonkey3 my friend, if you get to see him on his 10.00 Tour, don't miss the chance....i just saw him, for the 4th time, in Minneapolis Oct. 18, 6 feet from the stage, about 125 folks in this little club....the greatest venue for true talent....he is incredible....
OMG I am so into the beauty and sincerity of JOE PUG - saw him (and met him) in Toronto a couple years back with my baby girl (daughter :) ) " Before we met I KNEW WE"D MEET " even have a tat that says exactly that and even before I saw them - Rabg true to me is all!
@jmlegan The defining characteristic of folk music is the exchange of tunes ideas across regions and generations. A folk musician who doesn't borrow isn't really playing folk music.
So what if Pete Seeger, Woody, Dylan and so many others have done this before. New blood, new voices are needed forever to bring truth to light. I'm sure he's not copying, he's emulating, giving tribute to a language he feels comfortable with. More power to you Joe. Keep going and come to town and sing for us under a starlit sky.
I have multiple albums by Joe, saw him live at a very small venue several years ago, and have watched this video more times that I can count. It's hard to say which of his songs is my favorite, but this one is sure in contention. I can't recall if I've commented on this yet, but if so it might have been through a different profile. Does anyone know who the first woman is, the one in the red print dress?
@jaydonbattersby Did you see his solo show at Mojos that Sunday? He played a few songs completely unplugged to a totally captivated audience, it was like he was just playing to friends and family in his living room, absolutely brilliant performance.
This is one of the finest songs written in the past 50 years.
This comment is from TEN years ago?!?! I just heard this tonight in 2021! What a song!
Head this song in 2019 when I was driving through the cascade mountains in bend Oregon . It changed my life
Could not possibly agree more
I thought years ago for sure this guy would be the next Bob Dylan ..this song hooked me years ago ..I think we live in such a fast moving plastic world that most folks don't even listen to good music anymore ..just noise ..well I guess that's OK..because it just makes artist like Mr.pug and his songs even more special for us souls that are listening for other searchers..thanks Joe for sharing these beautiful songs that sooth the ones that enjoy that form of medicine..God bless..
Well said Joshua. You too are a poet with your neat words. I think I’ll go see Joe tonight he’s playing right here in my town. ✌️
So true brother!
You cradle a fiddle from time to time per chance, sir?
just found him. algorithms aren't all bad...
''the more i buy, the more i'm bought.''
my new mantra. incredible artist.
I keep coming back…❤
"Will you recognise my face, when God's awful grace, strips me of my jacket and my vest, and reveals all the treasure in my chest."
For me, this is the most well written song of all time. Wildly underappreciated, but then again I kind of like that about it.
Awesome..Joe Pug is a gem. I love to listen to him.
I've come here to watch this video to be just as impressed as I was back in 2008. You're timeless Joe. Thanks for your music.
It is an incredible song!
The more I buy, the more I’m bought. And the more I’m bought the less I cost. Brilliant.
In my 35 years of life that has been heavily influenced in music, I have never heard a song that has hit as close to home as this.
Amos Ikner music's a funny thing,
I could let a handful of friends hear this....
They wouldn't hear it!
Astonishing when he entered my world and has never been anything else. This one...just...doesn't...get old.
Perfection. This song has saved my soul numerous times.
j
Joe had to come and see her band at kinetic lounge many many years ago and there’s been nothing but respect since then he’s a brilliant musician
Saw this incredible young man Oct. 18 in Minneapolis on his 10.00 Tour...if he comes to your town, you better not miss him!!!! He is just wonderful......
Timeless Song and Talent. LOVE JOE'S MUSIC

WoW worth waiting for ..........
"May your steps be many". Wow, that what you said is really beautiful. I hope the same. This is such heartwarming song.
What happened to jow pugg, he was so amazing
Joe Pug you are my new fave. What a storyteller, guitarist and lyricist!! My daughter sent me this way. Amazing voice, fantastic guitarist!
I love this video because the folks in the tavern he's playing at have the same look of wonder on their faces as the crowd I was in the first time we saw him in Minneapolis. I feel so lucky that we've got this guy around for another 20-30 years.
seen him in jacksonville Sunday....Excellant show
Wow, this is so far the best song I have listened to in your list so far! His voice is amazing. He plays the guitar well and he sings from the heart!
I love to watch the video of a song because it drops subtle hints of what the song is about. I grew up loving folk and joe pug is such an amazing discovery.

NICE songwriting, executed with grace and depth. Love it.
Excellent song writing like this is becoming harder and harder to come by. By far one of the most well-written songs I've heard in quite some time.
i welled up first time i listened to it. idk why

Give The White Buffalo EP by the White Buffalo and The Haunt EP by Audra Mae a try
Nah that's not true, you just need to know where to look.
beautiful!
This song will always remind me of Avi. I remember listening to it driving back from Galena. RIP my friend.
i love you joe pug may your steps be many
great writing, great voice. good on ya
Brilliant song. Great artist. Beautiful girl. It's all good!
great show in atlanta joe. enjoyed it
Yeah I've come to know the wishlist of my father
I've come to know the shipwrecks where he wished
I've come to wish aloud
Among the over-dressed crowd
Come to witness now the sinkin of the ship
Throwin pennies from the sea top next to it
And I've come to roam the forest past the village
With a dozen lazy horses and my cart
I've come here to get high
To do more than just get by
I've come to test the timbre of my heart
Yeah, I've come to test the timber of my heart
And I've come to be untroubled in my seeking
And I've come to see that nothing is for naught
I've come to reach out blind
To reach forward and behind
For the more I seek, the more I'm sought
Yes, the more I seek, the more I'm sought
And I've come to meet the sheriff and his posse
To offer him the broadside of my jaw
I've come here to get broke
And then maybe bum a smoke
We'll go drinkin two towns over after all
Oh, we'll go drinkin two towns over after all
And I've come to meet the legendary takers
I've only come to ask them for a lot
Oh, they say I come with less
Than I should rightfully possess
I say the more I buy, the more I'm bought
And the more I'm bought the less I cost
And I've come to take their servants and their surplus
And I've come to take their raincoats and their speed
I've come to get my fill
To ransack and spill
I've come to trade the harvest for the seed
Yeah, I've come to trade the harvest for the seed
And I've come to know the manger that you sleep in
I've come to be the stranger that you keep
I've come from down the road
And my footsteps never slowed
Before we met, I knew we'd meet
Yes, before we met, I knew we'd meet
And I've come here to ignore your cries and heartaches
And I've come to closely listen to you sing
I've come here to insist
That I leave here with a kiss
I've come to say exactly what I mean
And I mean so many things
And you've come to know me stubborn as a butcher
And you've come to know me thankless as a guest
So will you recognize my face
When God's awful grace
It strips me of my jacket and my vest
And reveals all the treasure in my chest
So beautiful.
Hey Joe! Great song dude! Great album, you're a new favorite. We missed you at the Soda Bar in San Diego, we where there 2 weeks prior to see Gregory Alan Isakov. Can't wait to see you next time. Keep up the good work! It's rare when music gives me goose bumps, I love it!
The more I teach the more I'm taught.
The more I buy the more I'm bought.
+Muhammad Karim And the more I'm bought the less I cost.

How the fuck am I just hearing this now?
Better late than never though!
Listen to the rest of the Nation of Heat album, it's all good. Also, check out some of his more recent stuff. Sharpest Crown is a damn good song, Hymn #35 is possibly his best.
I've completely immersed myself in everything Joe Pug. Saw him in concert last month too. Very awesome.
Thanks Joe man, thank you. One of my favoutite artists, an inspiration for my own work. Would love to share a jam and a jar with you. Keep her lit a chara, till the misadventures of man cease.
this is beautiful. really.

,
Oh my god.
Instantaneously made me happy.
No kidding.
I just saw him in minneapolis.
phenomenal.
Pure Class !
i'm in love.
The perfect road song.
Unbelievable and extremely moving music. I've created my channel to feature underground bands and one of the bands I featured showed me this song. Been a fan ever since!
+GetYourMusicNoticed Sweet talk baby?..
This is really beautiful.
saw him perform in dublin a month or so ago, joe you're incredible
One thing I've learned is the line actually says... 'I've come to test the "timbre" of my heart'. A vastly different meaning from "timber" :)
lol i thought he was saying "temper," indicating the strength of his will. Still, such a beautiful song.
you set the world on fire
"Before we met I'd know we'd meet" Ash knows what I mean!
Joe pug top songs
excellent in all ways
very deep and spiritual lyrics
The older I get the more I appreciate Joe’s music
OMG I am so into the beauty and sincerity of JOE PUG - saw him (and met him) in Toronto a couple years back with my baby girl (daughter :) ) " Before we met I KNEW WE"D MEET " even have a tat that says exactly that and even before I saw them - Rabg true to me is all!
We need more indie songs like this.
amazing
Very nice!
4 seconds in and i love it
I certainly will! Thanx :)
One of my favorite Joe Pug songs. He really wails like Bob Dylan.
This guy can make a grown man cry.
@jmlegan The defining characteristic of folk music is the exchange of tunes ideas across regions and generations. A folk musician who doesn't borrow isn't really playing folk music.
astounding
And I’ve come… to watch Joe Pug on UA-cam
to reach forward and behind!!!!
so good
fine ode.
Bars for days.
i would pay to get this tabbed. would love to sing it to my girl
here's how to play this song: ua-cam.com/video/b-WORcfBhjQ/v-deo.html
Hope you're still with your girl then :p
Holy shit! This is awesome truth!
That’s very good
@KERRYTable
He has his own sound - listen to more of his work.
So what if Pete Seeger, Woody, Dylan and so many others have done this before. New blood, new voices are needed forever to bring truth to light. great resolution

Saw this guy Opening for Levon Helm earlier. VERY impressed. He's like a cross between Bob Dylan and Paul Simon.
this is some pretty special music.
"Joe Pug was born again for the first time once."

good listen :)
'" The more I'm cost the less I cost!'' That pretty much sums it up!!!
