The great work continues. The clouds look very realistic and I like that they are not just all white. The diner roof came out perfect, well done. 🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
Thanks Ken! I appreciate the comment. I’m beyond thrilled with how they clouds turned out, and overall they were SO easy to do. Excited to get the diner further along with an interior, lighting, and some fun signs as well. I think the little corner is shaping up nicely.
Thanks Maurice! I appreciate you following along and for the comment. I'm excited to get the diner a little further along and bring it to life with an interior and some roof top signs. It's going to be a neat little scene there in the corner (hopefully) when I'm done with it. - Sean
Thanks Doug! Appreciate you following along. Hoping to have that video out in the next week or so, just need to button up the editing and whatnot. - Sean
Beautiful work. I love that 3D printed roof. I can’t wait to get a printer up and running sometime soon. Looking forward to the video on clouds. They came out great. All the best, John
Thanks for the comment and such kind words, John! It took me a few tries with the clouds, but I think they turned out alright. At least they meet my low standards. 😂 I can’t say enough about the printer and what it’s able to do in terms of expanding modeling opportunities. Shoot me an email with your address and I’ll reach out to Santa to see if we can work something out: manddrr@gmail.com
What a smart idea to have a ballast test track. I learn something new every time I see one of your videos. Fantastic job on the clouds, they look so realistic. Stay safe and enjoy the upcoming holiday season. I imagine that you won’t have a December update, if not, no problem I can always wait until 2021.
Thanks Frank! I appreciate the comment and you continuing to follow along with the progress. It’s been slow going over the last year but I’m happy with how it’s all turning out. I’m not sure what the upcoming month brings as far as time for working on the layout, but I’m hoping to at least have a little something for an update! Hope that all is well for you!
Thanks for the comment and the kind words! I’m happy with how they turned out and overall the clouds were pretty easy. I’m looking forward to getting into the details of the diner, ESPECIALLY the sign. It’s going to be a neat little scene I think. - Sean
Thanks for the comment Pedro! It's a goal of mine to have a small switching layout at some point (maybe after this one's all buttoned up) depicting some scenes/customers on the El in it's hayday. I think it'd be a rad layout for operations AND for viewing. Do you have any videos up on your channel of your layout? Photos or a website? Facebook page? I'd love to check it out! - Sean
Thanks Heath! Appreciate you giving it a watch. I haven’t been on UA-cam a ton the last few weeks but scrolling through my sub feed, it’s looking like you’ve been making the Live Stream rounds! You’re keeping yourself busy!!
Thanks! It was a fun task to attempt, even though it took repainting the backdrop 2 times to get it close to what I wanted. 🤦♂️ Appreciate you following along! - Sean
Great update. I like the color options you chose for the track, its going to be great. I really like the scenery you have done so far, very sharp looking. looks like a smooth running loco you got too. Thanks so much for sharing. Rob
Thanks for the comment, Rob! I'm excited to get into ballasting, as weird as that sounds... I'm REALLY excited to have the RS-11. I've been running it around the layout and it's a champ so far, no issues and fantastic low speeds. - Sean
Thanks Grant! Honored that you gave it a watch and left a comment. I enjoy watching your updates, they definitely give me a lot to ponder and think about as I approach my own layout. - Sean
Really nice update. I love the test track idea for trying out ideas and products for ballast and weathering - I may borrow that one as I will soon be starting work in my yard and want some good variety in the yard tracks. Great tip also on the AZ rock and mineral samples. I didn’t know they did that!
Thanks for the comment, John! Borrow away, it’s been really nice to work on stuff like painting, weathering, and ballasting tests at the bench and then transfer it over to the layout to get a good feel for how things would look before pulling the trigger on anything permanent. It’s REALLY been nice in that I have a very narrow space and you can see EVERYTHING from nearly every angle and so I’m trying to refrain from having to do things over. I’d rather get it (somewhat) right the first time. Also, I had no idea ARM did that either until I stumbled on them one night in between page tabs going back and forth trying to decide. Saw the samples option and it was a no brainer. I highly recommend their Yard Mix, it’s a fantastic dark grey/black color with some dark brown/reddish tones incorporated to add depth. It’s what I’m going to rock on all of my spurs and my eventual yard-when the time comes. Stay safe, my friend!
Thanks for watching and for the comment. I’ll definitely have that video up shortly, just need to edit the footage down and put a bow on it. I’m happy with how they turned out. It took a bunch of testing and repainting the backdrop 2 times, but it eventually ended up how I hoped it would. I think I even surprised myself with how it turned out. Lol
Hi Sean, the backscenes look great, I had a go a while back, I had to paint quite a few boards for my backscene. I think I had about 5 boards that were good and the rest were average so I decided on using printed ones, i was pleased I tried though. As usual your update is too short, lol! Thanks Sean, John
Thanks for the comment John! I think going into the project I was in the same boat, it was worth at least trying. I was afraid that the results weren’t going to be what I wanted but they came out nicely, or at least I think so. Something I didn’t mention in the video was I painted the entire backdrop two times because I had to “figure it out” with some trial and error. Testing colors, brushes, techniques, cloud type, etc. In the end I think it worked out well and I (think) I accomplished my goal of “adding” in a layer without taking away from what I want people to really focus on, the trains! I’ll work on getting some longer updates out for you. 😜 Thanks for watching! Be safe.
@@Longshadowsmodeltrees thanks Bob! It’s definitely been a challenge working with such a small space, but I like the challenge, it forces me to think outside of the box sometimes.
Wow your clouds look great. I tried to do this my self a few years ago following some "simple" tutorials and they didn't look remotely correct. I was like homer assembling the BBQ wondering why "mine doesn't look like that" :(
Thanks Jarren! For what it’s worth, I was in the same boat. I tried (and ended up repainting the backdrop twice) a few of the “simple” techniques as well without the results I was after. My hope is that someone out there in model railroad land sees what I’ve done (which honestly, was mostly just pushing paint around) and can apply it for their own layouts without the fear of needing to be an artist to accomplish it. Hopefully you’ll give it another try!
I was lucky that I had some on hand, but I wanted to give acrylics a try to see what I could do with those (seeing as they were cheap AND easily painted over in case of a mess up).
Hey John, thanks for the comment and kind words! I don’t have an Instagram for the page (yet) but I do have a Facebook page for the channel (under the same name). Full transparency though, I haven’t posted much just yet. I’m hopeful to get some “in-between” video posts and photos up at some point. Thanks for watching and following along, Sean
Is it weird that I listen to your voice to calm me? Don’t answer that. Great update. Your layout looks awesome. I should get you to narrate one of my videos. Let’s collaborate on a self help podcast. “Put down the soldering iron, walk away from the layout and take three deep breaths. Repeat after me: It’s ok”
😂 Mark, you always make me laugh with your comments. I’m TOTALLY down to do a collab some time. Maybe we do a live stream where we both work on our layouts!!

I love the look of the diner. Looking forward to see how it looks finished. I'd love to have something similar on my layout!

Looking forward to see how it comes out!
