I've greatly enjoyed this series! I'm planning my own N scale shelf layout featuring a dockside area, and this has provided much inspiration for me. I really like the trackplan of the extension you added in Part 11 and would like to incorporate it once I have an opportunity to expand too. Cheers!
Your details are fantastic. I have never seen a model look so realistic. You are so talented. I learn more from you in three minutes that from hours of lecture. I just love your work. Stay safe and healthy. I look forward to next month’s update.
Thanks Frank! I'm always honored by your comments and compliments. Thank you for continuing to follow along and be so encouraging. Stay safe and be well, Sean
Thanks Rob! Thank you for the kind words and compliments. There's still a lot of work to be done, but it's getting there. I can "see" it take shape more and more. Stay safe and be well, Sean
Sean - really like the runoff pipe idea. Solved a 'problem' in the scenery and added a great bit of visual interest. The entire scene is really looking good. -Rick
Thanks Rick! I was racking my brain trying to figure out what to do and then it "just hit me" and I'm glad the solution was relatively easy. Stay healthy and be well, Sean
Thanks John! I’m extremely appreciative of you always watching and leaving a comment with such kind and encouraging words. Maybe one of these days I’ll put together a video that’s a little longer than 3 or 4 minutes. 😜 Stay safe and be well, Sean
Haha of course! It was something I've wanted to incorporate but hadn't figured out how, your suggestion forced me to think about it. I looked into using some chia seeds like you suggested (as well as some other sands, spices, rocks, ballast, etc-anything super tiny, really) and out of sheer, dumb luck I had these little n scale sample packets of ballast. I like how they turned out and can't wait to add more throughout the rest of the harbor area, especially on the pilings of the structures! Thanks for the suggestions. :) Sean
@@TheMidlandDorchesterRailroad The more I gave chia seeds a thought, moisture would do weird things with them probably. It's those little textural elements that really add to the overall project. Btw, good luck with the Etsy shop👍
Yeah, that was my fear and what I was debating. That would be a disaster, a few months down the road something starts to sprout on my layout. 😂 Thanks for checking out the shop! I haven’t advertised it much because I’m still getting my feet wet and “figuring” things out, but it’s been a fun little venture the last few months and one that I plan to expand as time, space and finances allow. I’d love to eventually get into craftsman kit design and production.
Thanks Andy! I appreciate the kind words and you following along. I'm excited to do the barnacles on the pilings of the rest of the structures when I get that far, I think it'll bring a lot of "miniature realism" to the whole scene. Stay safe and be well, Sean
Sean, that harbor is looking fantastic. I really like how you varied up the materials composing she shore line, from rocks to concrete, to the metal wall. The technique for the barnacles is brilliant! Stay well! -John
Thanks John! It's getting there slowly. It's funny that you mentioned the varying materials because that wasn't even planned (initially) and about a month or so ago I had the realization that it happened on accident. I'm glad it did because it provided me with some options for future projects later in life, that's for sure. Thanks for following along! Sean
Haha, good luck with that! Seeing that the layout is set in 1964, I'm sure they'll probably file the paperwork straight to the rubbish bin. Thanks for following along, Scott. Stay safe and be well, Sean
I’m excited for it to be put together a bit more and it’s shaped up nicely so far but still quite a ways to go! Thanks for the comment and following along.
Thanks for this Steve! Apologies for such a late reply and leaving you hanging. 🤦♂️ It was truly a pleasure to meet you and talk all things UA-cam and trains at the show for sure!
Thank you Ron! I appreciate you taking the time to give a watch and leave a comment. It's starting to shape up, admittedly a little slower than I'd like, but such is life. haha Stay safe and be well, Sean

@@TheMidlandDorchesterRailroad Thanks Sean! I can't wait to see what you come up with next for your layout! I have two water scenes on my current layout, but I am not very happy with them so I am trying to improve on them! Be sure and stay tuned!
Love the harbor scene as its coming along. Do you plan on using an epoxy or something for the water?...Woodland Scenics has something called Deep Pour Murky water that I bet would be great for that. Keep up the updates!
Thanks Steve! I've been going back and forth between whether or not I want to use and epoxy or even the Woodland Scenics Murky you mentioned. I've had my eye on that for a while and was thrilled to see them introduce it a while back-my biggest fear is the inevitable "creep" of the water line. I haven't quite settled on anything just yet and part of me is leaning toward using Dave Frary's method (10+ coats of gloss modpodge stippled on with a mop brush and sealed with a clear varnish) but I'm so torn. I guess I have some time to figure it you yet? Have you used either an epoxy based product or the WS stuff? Thoughts on it if you have? Thanks for following along, Sean
@@TheMidlandDorchesterRailroad Hi Sean, No I don't have any experience with epoxy or the WS product. I've seen it used in other videos...looks good. But I know what you mean. Maybe make up a mock diorama with some foam to test it out?
Thanks for watching and the comment, Jarren! I haven't made any public announcements but I started a little company out of my home back in July/August of last year selling all of the little details and stuff that I've been designing and printing. Nice, you get really good print quality! I've got a few friends with nice resin printers that have nothing but trouble, convinced me out of trying to get my own. Going to set up my own laser though so if you ever need anything laser cut :)
I really like the 3D printed details. I purchased some for my layout. Did you make the rock seawall using hydrocal and carve the stones? Do you have a video showing this? I couldn't find any about these walls. I really enjoy watching the updates. Thanks.
Thanks Ron! I appreciate you picking them up, I saw they were delivered today! Hopefully everything arrived safely and to your liking. Both seawalls (the concrete and the stacked rocks) are done in hydrocal. In the last update I walked through a short version of the process used to get the outcome but didn’t go into a crazy ton of depth. It may give you just enough information to try it if you’d like, I highly recommend it, it turned out beautifully in my opinion. I learned the technique from Doug Foscale-he has a video on UA-cam walking through the process more in-depth that’s worth a watch. The stacked rock wall is a casting by C.C. Crow that I modified a little bit to adapt better to N Scale. If you look at Builders In Scale’s website, they sell the casting there! Hope that helps. 🙂 Sean
Thanks Sean, I appreciate your response to my questions. I checked out the web site and their products. I am just beginning to scratch build N Scale models so this will help. Yes, I received the items today and they look great. @@TheMidlandDorchesterRailroad
Thanks Dats! The cinderblocks are indeed 3D printed. The only items in that scene that aren’t are the scrap wood pieces and the little “pipes” made out of .015 styrene rod.
