Don't get hung up on cone angle. 18 vs 20 deg is tiny and you don't know how they calculate it. weird how people perceive things. I switched to Humminbird from Lowrance. never tried Garmin. Closer in, Garmin picked up the structure better. But picking up the fish farther out, Lowrance clearly looked better to me. 20:43 is the prefect example. I know it's not simultaneous, but overall, it looked like Lowrance did a better job of picking up the individual fish.
The static in the lowrance is driving me crazy. I think they show about the same detail in that 40-60ft range. I think Garmin still has the edge on this forward facing sonar. Great video!!!
Thanks Jacob. It seems to me like you presented as even a view as possible. But sounds like a lot of the folks had their own opinion before you started...... not really fair. I've had livescope for just over a year. The narrow beam on the Lowrance probably helps to see things a little bit further out. In my experience with LS, once you get it dialed in for your particular conditions (water clarity, turbulence etc.) it is pretty easy to find your bait and know what's going on. I usually keep my unit around 100ft out and 30-50' deep, depth depending on which lake. I can easily see my a rig at those settings, and can see jigs, swimbaits, spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits. It has definitely changed my fishing and allowed me to catch a lot more fish by finding additional structure, or seeing how fish react to your bait. My vote still goes to Garmin based on this video, but ultimately it's better for all of us when there is competition. Better innovations and lower prices when they compete.
Good comparison overview. Looks like Lowrance has a bit more power in length. But the issue I see with Lowrance has a lot more blurry/noise objects that scan across the screen. Not sure if what that is. Garmin seems to be a clearer all around image.

That looks like it might be interference from the 360. I'm not sure if he had the 360 spinning, and if so, what frequencies the 360 was pinging. But yeah, the flashing/pulsing on the Lowrance was not good.
Thanks for doing this Jacob! It was very helpful. Honestly, I thought the Lowrance was better in some of the areas you pointed out, but that weird pulsing going across the screen would be a deal breaker for me. It bothers my eyes. You asked a question, what we caught our first fish on ,it had to be a green head or bread on a hook. But first fish on a lure was using a Red devil spoon casting to a stump, and the spring scale read 6.5 lbs , that was the summer of 1968 , and needless to say I was also hooked
@@masonparis7957 I can't attest to their customer service, but I can confirm that their fail rate is in line with the rest of the industry and that no one has a superior side scan than Humminbird out of the big 3 brands. I own three Garmin Echomaps and two of the three stopped working this year (made a video about it). Even pros running and sponsored by Garmin will tell you that side scan is better on an HB. And as someone who ihas used the 360 product I can tell you that it's absolutely amazing. I'm not going to lie, I'm giving Humminbird products a very serious look this year, I'm just not happy with the side scan capabilities of Garmin.
@@DanRichardFishing I run humminbird and Lowrance. Side by side. Lowrance is 10 times the graph. Sidescan ain’t shit unless you can downscan it and see what’s really going on there. Graph is a graph tho. Just have to know what you like
@@masonparis7957 I've literally seen people say exact opposite... That Lowrance units are garbage fail constantly and have an inferior sidescan although better than Garmin and horrible CS. They had a MASSIVE failure rate on their 16" units to the point you could get them from Tackle Warehouse for under 2000 bucks on clearance. One of the pros that fish FLW that I talk to all the time had three of them fail in a row. I think everyone has had a bad experience with a given brand and thinks it's total trash and others think it's amazing. Either way, Garmin is the worst for side scan hands down at this point but lead in real time sonar. I can confirm that the humminbird side scan is amazing the mega 360 product is amazing and that Garmin customer support is fantastic. I do love that perimeter sidescan feature on Lowrance when idling but I don't see superior imaging. For down scan, I find the image interpretation pretty much the same across the board and can read any of those graphs with ease. The main draw for me with HB is the 360. As a smallmouth fisherman in heavy current, it's the perfect tool. I can spot lock and have a 360 view all around me and find every single rock pile and cast each one, jog the spot lock up 30 ft, work those rock piles etc. The livescope product is amazing but completely useless when you're spot locked in heavy current and the trolling motor is constantly moving around. I know there are separate accessories to get around that but nothing very convenient.
they both had their moments...i like the structure view on the garmins better but the fish show up better on the lowrance...so hmmm...look forward to the mega live!
THank you. i was looking at bthe constant binterferance going across the lowrace screen waiting for him to mention it but he never did. Lowrance 2nd Gen might be something else but from the videos ive seen they shoudve waited to come out with there live sight. The only pros i see using lowrance of garmin are ones who are clearly indorsed by lowrance.
The lowrance had a sharper image but the Garmin was much more stable. Shit flying around everywhere on the lowrance. Hopefully lowrance can do a software update to fix up some of that.
Awesome video. I wish I could pick your brain in person one time. I live 15 minutes from wiedas marine. I’m looking to buy my first boat this year and they have one out there I like in my budget. I’m also going to try and compete in the bass pro us open and fish the qualifier down at old hickory in Nashville. Anything you could have to pass along knowledge wise would be amazing. Keep up the amazing videos and good luck on the upcoming season. I’m pulling for ya.
I hate even bringing this up with arguably the best fisherman in the world, BUT.... I run the livescope, regardless, on both units your depth setting showed a ton of the bottom. In other words, if you manually changed your depth to show no more than 3 feet of the bottom it magnifies the image a little more. Here's something to consider... I have zero time on active target but it appears from the demo that you can't dial it in by the foot. I have no dog in this fight but really would want to be able to dial my depth in by the foot. I find that no more than 3 feet of the bottom maximizes the image and allows me to see much better, for what it's worth... Thanks Jacob for the awesome content.
Thanks Jacob great video , and I have to admit I agree with you about the soft plastics I text you about. They are. Very fragile , thanks for your input 👍
Just in the process of trying to decide on the big three. I have been a Hummingbird user for a long while now. Thanks for the comparison video here. After looking at many videos I think the Garmin has better clarity. Probably gonna purchase my first in a week or 2. Thank you for your input and videos.

I have heard many people complain of interference using active target in conjunction with mega 360. On the other hand you can keep garmin livescope one inch from your 360 pod with no interference. I would also say a wider cone is better esp because most of us bass guys have our live technology on trolling motor mounts. (Live scope user, never used active target but im sure it works well)
Not only did the Garmin have a much more clear image, the Lowrance was blurry and image was pulsing quite a bit. Even if the Lowrance picks up tiny blips 5 feet out further, the Garmin beats this hands down. Anyone denying that, has bias. I'm a Lowrance guy, but facts are facts. This test really helps Garmin since most bass fishing is done much closer than these long distanced tests were showing. so inside 70 feet where most are fishing, the Garmin would greatly outshine the Lowrance.
Wish you would have moved in on the bridge piling to show the fish in relation to the structure. For me not being familiar with this new technology it was hard to determine what was fish on the bridge. A lot of interference on the screen also. Thanks for the demonstration.
I have a Garmin I recently bought but haven’t bought the correct transducer yet to show the forward facing. I do plan to purchase very soon. I have to say to me the Garmin looked cleaner but maybe since I’ve never used on the water I may be wrong.
I thought Garmin looked better. Not as much noise. Almost like the gain was cranked higher on the Lowrance. Signal blotchs appearing on the Lowrance, Or maybe its my eyes LOL. Hope the settings and cone angle were set similar. Both look good, incredible technology. Great video Jake.
Just curious, I heard you mention that the Garmin was at 67% gain which seems a little low to me. What was the gain set at on the Lowrance? If it was 95% that might explain a difference in distance.
Color gain was higher, 80% plus. I normally only run 62%-70% on the regular gain that you can adjust on the screen just because if you go any higher it will blow out.
I agree...that piling looked very clear and you could see something on the bottom left corner of the piling that I couldn't see on the Lowrance. Plus the Garmin seemed a more stable picture with less stuff jumping around
Good unbiased wish there were more like this waiting to see what the Hummingbird looks like cause I can only afford one I want to make the right choice. this has not made my mind up yet. Thanks
I expect the views on this to hit 50k!! Great video! Great info! It’s impressive to see where pros put their money when careers are on the line! Sponsored boats mislead us sometimes
Yeha I like the Garmin better, you can see farther with Lowrance, but a lot of the UFO's in the Lowrance one, blobs just zooming through, and that might just be a setting
Jacob, just my opinion but I think after using the lowrance for a few tournaments you will be able to get more dialed in and have a better idea which is a better at forward scanning.
Graph around the south side of the 155 bridge on lake Palestine this week my dude, mega wads, and they may actually eat in the cold. Look for a bridge piling with 2 red dots.
yeah like the garmin better. was there a sensitivity on lowerance all that clutter lines running across the screen was bad on lowerance i cant wait to see hummingbirds version of this in mega.
great video! looking into the whole live imaging gear myself. Currently have a solix 10, so Humminbird may be a great option for me. if the system performs well. although, I am considering adding a unit at the bow. This video gives me some good insight on a side by side view. Thank you! Good luck this season! always been a fan.
Watched this video without volume... I felt the Garmin clearly was better, more clear, easier to read. Turned up volume and watch again, Jacob doesn't agree. When Lowrance is a sponsor I understand. For me Hands down Garmin. I have a Full Bird system now with a garmin 1242 now, but am getting a new boat and am wide open to all brands. Lowrance is out... so either a Full Garmin system, Bird with a Garmin or a Full Bird waiting on Mega Live.
Looks like a Dedicated shaftt on the Lowrance and not on the Garmin. Could be a 360... Notice everything the Garmin looks really good, he bumps the troller. Seemed like when the garmin.was dialed in it looked better. Maybe a bit shorter but 90' is a 30 yard cast and not many baits go that far.
Great information. I wanted to see other videos to aid in my search for which way to go. I’ve been looking toward Garmin and wondering about the setup on a 52 inch shaft. I’m also running a core 360 as well. I just purchased the precision sonar mount and ready to make the jump once I find the “Deal of a lifetime”... lol
I’ll forever be a hummingbird customer had the same problem with a brand new lowrance unit and they were no help. Hummingbird customer service is top notch.
Thanks Mr. Wheeler nice comparison. We are all spending big money and don't know what we have till it's spent and on the boat.. Now in March do the new bird.
I’ve been using live scope this late winter on a skeeter an a bay boat catching crappie an we using a 1/16 oz jig not a dam A rig if you can see a 1/16 oz jig then it’s doing good an I haven’t seen a active target video yet including this one that looks as good as live scope
Great video JWheels. Is there an updated garmin available? Just wondering what that image is like compared to old version and active target since it was just released.
Jacob, can you explain how you combine the HB360 with the FF Sonar? Do you use the 360 to scout the area, then use the FF sonar to focus on detail? I assume depth plays a factor? Would love to see/hear even more detail on how you combine these different technologies. Thanks for taking the time to help us all out.
Close to what I was asking about last time I posted. 🙄 Are you dragging this out JW? I requested an update on the "self purchased" units that you were comparing last season. You responded, kind of, last post that something was in the works. Still waiting in Wisconsin... Either way, keep it up Wheels! U da man!!!!
Interesting to see the live mega Humminbird, also can’t wait to hear about Garmins 2.0 livescope at icast. Their has to be one coming out. I run Brent Chapman’s 2019 Triton 21 TRXS and it came with the livescope. I absolutely love it offshore and fishing the edges of hydrilla. Makes it easier to find where fish are setting up in the hydrilla edges. Jacobs I usually buy pros boats and chance you’re selling the 2020 rig ? Or can I get in line for the 2021 rig. @@WheelerFishing in all seriousness Jacob, you are the man. After I got outta the service you are one of the biggest fisherman I followed to get me back into the sport. Tight lines my friend, and best to you in all future endeavors! 🇺🇸🎣🤙🏽
You asked a question, what we caught our first fish on ,it had to be a green head or bread on a hook. But first fish on a lure was using a Red devil spoon casting to a stump, and the spring scale read 6.5 lbs , that was the summer of 1968 , and needless to say I was also hooked
Garmin just looks better. Will Mega Live top it? Can't wait to see it.
Same!!
Humminbird hasnt and won’t do anything great. Products don’t last. Graphs are no good. And service just sucks lol
Badass video Wheels. Helping the average feller out. I like it ole Son.
THank you. i was looking at bthe constant binterferance going across the lowrace screen waiting for him to mention it but he never did. Lowrance 2nd Gen might be something else but from the videos ive seen they shoudve waited to come out with there live sight. The only pros i see using lowrance of garmin are ones who are clearly indorsed by lowrance.
Saw this video about 2 years ago and had to revisit it!! Thanks for sharing!!😎👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Looks like lowrance has missed the boat for the second time. Especially my boat. I will stay with the garmin. Thanks for the video.
Thanks very helpful! I am considering the Lowrance Active Target.
*Looks good even in daylight **enjoyable.fishing** recommend it was exactly what it was described to be , works awesome , overall happy with product*
I really appreciate the way you do the comparisons and showing us how each shows targets I think the Lowrance was easier to see details more clearly
💯
Great video my guy . I’ve been debating on what to go with and this is hands down the best video I’ve found 👍🏽 ordering Lowrance tomorrow. Thanks!
I live on lake moultrie on santee cooper lakes in sc,,am 65 and have fished lake all my life,,i have finally convinced myself to spend some of my kids imheritance on a forward looking sonar unit setup...i have glaucoma so i need something clear and easy to see,,,i fish mainly shallow water areas of lake for bass and bream.crappie etc,,which is best for me lowrance or garmin,,i love the idea of being able to scan a cove and see if there is any fish and if do where they are ,,,some friends say pan optix is better for deep fishing,,,your expertise is welcomed,,also WHERE is best place to buy,,i cant find a single palce offering any discounts even for military or retired law enf
Will you be testing the humminbird MEGA LIVE once it comes out?
I have heard many people complain of interference using active target in conjunction with mega 360. On the other hand you can keep garmin livescope one inch from your 360 pod with no interference. I would also say a wider cone is better esp because most of us bass guys have our live technology on trolling motor mounts. (Live scope user, never used active target but im sure it works well)
Livescope is better...but does it justify having to buy a separate Garmin unit? Active Target saves you 2K because you can use just one unit.
All that static on the Lowrance would drive me crazy! Is it from the trolling motor since the Garmin boat had the Minn kota?
Both are good. From what I viewed, the Lowrance is improved clarity. I am sure competition will continue to improve.
Furuno CH 500/180 isn’t to shabby. Never used garmin products but they look good. Thanks for information
Wish you would have moved in on the bridge piling to show the fish in relation to the structure. For me not being familiar with this new technology it was hard to determine what was fish on the bridge. A lot of interference on the screen also. Thanks for the demonstration.
Good stuff Wheeler! 👊🏼💯🇺🇸
Thanks for the information my friend!
I personally like the Garmin better. Will try to add livescope to my kayak later this year and get a custom mount for it all.
Awesome content! The effort on this doesn't go unnoticed
Yeah, the pulsing distortion jumping constantly on the lowrance was driving me nuts. Garment for the win.
Your at Wolftever bridge haha I didn't know you were from here, cool video👍
Right down the road 🤙
Definitely seen the A-rig on the lowrance at 15:46 which at the time couldn't see it the Garmin at that point
Yes big difference, like 20ft feet better then garmin
You and DC should use that at Eufalua. If they are in the brush throw a suspending stick bait in there....
Lol good idea!
Great testing process..... Thanks young man
Lowrance has Garmins technology on lease. The Garmin looks cleaner and crispy
Just run auto gain , then adjust from their if you want to see a little more but not much more past auto because it will blow out.
That Garmin has such a cleaner picture!
Jacob, just my opinion but I think after using the lowrance for a few tournaments you will be able to get more dialed in and have a better idea which is a better at forward scanning.
but I would hang on to that live scope, just in case you find the active target falls short of your expectations .
Cant wait for hummingbirds version
What I found amazing was...you were at Wolftever ramp and bridge and hardly anyone was there. Usually that place is loaded even through the week.
Im waiting for Foward 3D sonar. Its only a matter of time.
Thanks for this great video. Can't wait for a comparison with the new Humminbird Mega Live Imaging, when it's available. Takes too long 😔
Graph around the south side of the 155 bridge on lake Palestine this week my dude, mega wads, and they may actually eat in the cold. Look for a bridge piling with 2 red dots.
Nice never got bass fish as kid dad made me work but now oldlove watch but I love deep sea now
yeah like the garmin better. was there a sensitivity on lowerance all that clutter lines running across the screen was bad on lowerance i cant wait to see hummingbirds version of this in mega.
Once the lowrance got real close I thought it looked better but for 80% of the video I thought the garmin looked much better.
great video! looking into the whole live imaging gear myself. Currently have a solix 10, so Humminbird may be a great option for me. if the system performs well. although, I am considering adding a unit at the bow. This video gives me some good insight on a side by side view. Thank you! Good luck this season! always been a fan.
Great video was exactly what I have been searching for A++
“My unbiased opinion” Then says “I’ve always been a Lowrance guy”
Shhhhh 😂
I just purchased the precision sonar mount and ready to make the jump once I find the “Deal of a lifetime”... lol
I’ve had 2 lowrance units go out on me garbage my opinion!
Same here 1 hds unit and they won’t even help me out at all.. garmin now
I’ll forever be a hummingbird customer had the same problem with a brand new lowrance unit and they were no help. Hummingbird customer service is top notch.
Thanks Mr. Wheeler nice comparison. We are all spending big money and don't know what we have till it's spent and on the boat.. Now in March do the new bird.
Good luck at your next event, hopefully it'll warm up some.
Great, unbiased, review mate - both look very good.
The garmin looks WAY better!!
Have you been able to see what humminbird has to offer from any of your buddies?
You would have to add the Ultra High Definition to the Garmin in order to get it up to the 100+ like you had with the lowrance active
Please explain what you are seeing on the screens. What is the additional noise you are seeing.
I’ve been using live scope this late winter on a skeeter an a bay boat catching crappie an we using a 1/16 oz jig not a dam A rig if you can see a 1/16 oz jig then it’s doing good an I haven’t seen a active target video yet including this one that looks as good as live scope
Jacob I enjoy your videos but Lowerance is not there yet. Garmin had the edge
Are you dragging this out JW?
Maybe put a deposit. Thanks.
I liked the Garmin because I can see it clearer and it looks brighter also.
Thanks for the comparisons that helped out!
Good video...i wish you would make a video of just plain graphs. Like a lowrance elite 9 t1. Thanks
