Kostas Smoriginas as Escamillio in Barrie Kosky's Royal Opera production of Bizet's masterpiece.
Award-winning director Barrie Kosky provides a refreshing perspective on this well-known opera. He explores Carmen's ever-changing nature - marked by her series of contrasting costumes - and her vitality through dance. The pre-recorded voice of a narrator (perhaps Carmen herself) ensures that we experience the whole story from her perspective, and the production's unique performing edition (by Michael Rot) offers a chance for audience members to hear music Bizet omitted from the opera's first performances.
Carmen had only lukewarm success at its 1875 premiere - perhaps due to its unconventional subject - but soon became immensely popular, and has remained so. Its glorious score boasts a host of wonderful melodies, including Carmen's sensual Habanera and Seguidilla, Don José's tender Flower Aria and Escamillo's rousing Toreador's Song. There are also passionate duologues, above all the intense, final confrontation between Carmen and Don José.

Different, yes, worthy of all these negative comments - no. I went to see this, and was apprehensive due to the reviews. Sure it was not traditional, but it was one of the best nights at the opera I have been to. Actually it was almost a ballet as well. The choreography whilst singing was simply amazing. Unfortunately, watching on screen dilutes the experience, but in the flesh it was amazing and spine tingling

I'm glad to also have seen more "traditional" productions of the opera classics instead of just this kind of new interpretations.
Admittedly, they were sometimes a bit overdone (I remember a "Carmen" in Prague in the eighties, with fiery Spanish women with wiggling hips, roses in their hair and everything), but at least they had a certain show value in terms of stage design and costumes.
This looks like a rehearsal on the grandstand of the school sports hall...

When this video started, it was alright, nothing to particularly write home about. The voices were alright but again nothing ground breaking. at 0:56 the music started losing me but it started to build, and build, and then the music hit a new high. but the solo was alright. after that, when it all came back together, it was honestly a master piece, but before I could finish the song, a weird fox mangled, almost chucky cheese looking thing bit my head and took my frontal lobe ;(. However, now that I have finished it, I would rate it a 10/20 as it could've been better but had some highs.

Agreed. For example, I really like the Peter Sellars version of Don Giovanni. I know purists would disagree, but resetting the milieu in a drug-lord ruled ghetto, while obviously unusual, creates a certain relevance - it reminds us that the Don is not simply a charming seducer but also a thug who is used to getting his way and doesn’t hesitate to use power, influence, money and even force when need be.
This retelling of Carmen doesn’t retell the story in a more contemporary setting - it is just about pulling our leg, and not in a nice way either.

Lowering the barrier of entry like this by adding something they might subjectively find more interesting to watch is fine. I am glad though that there are still lots of more traditional productions.

Kostas is my favorite Escamillo, his attitude on stage trapped me and he really fits the attitude of the character. In this aria, I can say that technically he gets the perfect energy wich is possible to perceive in his great voice and his movements on stage. He seems to enjoy this aria as well as me
Perhaps, the dancers around him are unneccessary because his attitude and his voice are enough. Bravo Kostas!! Love your voice!!

I agree with everyone else: this just looks tacky, the three 'stooges' (as someone describes them) and all the arm and hand movements are unnecessary and distracting, and even Smoriginas is no more than adequate as Escamillo (the contrast in a clip with the late, great Horostovsky which came up on UA-cam at the same time is all too obvious). I hated this production and I'm glad that it has been scrapped by the ROH. WNO in 1982 showed how you could reimagine Carmen without wrecking it and, instead, letting people appreciate it anew. This just wrecked it.

    Fun fact!
The fact that they have four prominent performers on the stage is a reference to the origin of this song, "Five Nights at Freddy's". This is because there are four main characters in this game.

Великолепные голоса. Восхитительная музыка. По поводу всего остального - думаю, «старым» операм надо оставить «старое» исполнение. Мир изменился, и пришло время для «новых» опер, которые будут исполняться «по-новому».

There are ways to update classic operas to help them appeal to a wider audience. If this clip is representative of the opera as a whole, it was surely a failure. The choreography within this context is incredibly ill fitting. If it were a campy musical, cabaret, or drag show (things I love by the way) it would be fantastic! Within the context of Carmen it comes across as incredibly disrespectful. It's as if they hired a choreographer who has contempt for Opera, determined to make fun of it overtly. It's literally a mockery! Adding dancers to back up a singer is a great idea. Dancers add a layer of drama and movement to any opera. This execution, however, is shockingly poor. It's also a disservice to the dancers themselves. They're clearly talented & executing the choreography as intended. I hope the ROH does better in the future. Yikes.
