Let's start the week off right, with some PASTA... alternatives that are LOW CARB!! Thanks for watching the video and supporting the CHANNEL!! Don't forget to LIKE 👍🏻the video !! If you have any questions and/or ideas for future videos, drop them in the COMMENTS below!! 👇🏻
Thanks! I will try the Palm Hearts now. I have been using fresh cabbage, knife shredded thin, very lightly cooked in a cast iron pan with light salt and avocado oil. I loved it under my fresh tomato/ fresh grated parmesan cheese/basil/olive oil (Pomodora Sauce). I cooked it till the cabbage was just soft, definitely before it could get brown.
Kelp noodles are AWESOME, soft and the most like actual pasta if you soak them in lemon juice and baking soda for 2 minutes prior to use. Just rinse off the juice/soda mixture and heat and serve with sauce of your choice! I'm 100% Italian and this is by far the closest in texture to real pasta. It's all in the prep! Comes out soft just like spaghetti.
Oh, now that I saw the keep noodles in the video I've seen it but at the store I've only seen it in seaweed salad so it has sugar. I wonder if I could rinse it off. Lol
I want to be very honest with you, I am doing keto now for 1 month, the results are amazing. I lost a lot of weight and inches etc. but to be honest my admiration for this life style changed completely. I hate keto, I hate it so much you cannot imagine and the reason why I didn't give up is because I have a lot of self discipline. I will continue to do it for 1 more month to lose the last kgs and then I will do a slow transition to "normal" eating and try to maintain my weight through it. I dream about the first bite I will have of a delicious big green apple... I really hate keto... Kudos to those who do it for so long like Thomas.
I'm 6 months in and I LOVE it. Down 60 lbs so far, from 250 to 190. I feel like fruits are just vegetables but with unnecessary sugar, and that sugar is such a slippery slope for me--a few bites of apples leads to more and more cravings. And I really enjoy the way my body feels, lighter and more energized, when I stay away from sugar completely. To each their own!
Shane J. Parker Shane good on you I follow the Mediterranean keto that Thomas is very kin on as well . I used very healthy fats , olive oil, fresh eggs , salmon all kind of fruit well the one with lots of sugar I don’t meat etc and carbs yes carbs but per day . I’m 52 kilos one up one down lost over 18 kilos in a year could never follow keto I like grains to much . Saying that if a overdue one day or two I follow low carb day of Mediterranean keto . Saying that I don’t need to loose much more and my health is good , look in to his videos and you wil find the Mediterranean keto xx🇬🇧🙂
@@cristinaparmart817 yes I completely agree with you that Mediterranean eating lifestyle is so good. My parents are portuguese and I grew up with this kind of food and the reason why I hate keto is not necessary because you cannot eat carbs but it's more that you cannot eat all vegetables like carrots that I love or fruits and the fact that there is no room for a cheat meal once or twice a month makes me go nuts! I will transition to Mediterranean keto for sure xo 😊
Shane J. Parker ohh good sorry I’m Spanish living in uk just try to avoid sugary fruit , but this morning I had a ginger , carrot, apple juice with apple cider vinagre one spoon I swear about one table spoon or two a day it make you loose weight . As well I do gazpacho with it one glass a day and then your normal meal . I just try now to fry my food , I used air dry or oven then I drizzle my food with pure olive oil .😋
Spaghetti squash is awesome. I make a red sauce with tomato paste, red wine, and organic chorizo, pastured butter, olive oil, spices and herbs. So good. And it’s a two night meal. Absolutely delicious.
Life saver I don’t trust anyone but Thomas when looking for keto friendly foods. I just came across a bag of palm pasta and searched on UA-cam and yessss Thomas has that on his video !! I also bought a box of whole organic spaghetti squash*^... I can always depend on his videos for quality information. He’s the “been there done that” health guru thanks a bunch true life saver 😅😊
Yes, all that work plus $15 bucks for a pound AF for pasta isn't my idea of easy, convenient, or budget friendly. I'll stick to Chickpea pasta 2 bucks a pack when I get a craving.
@@dlawrence2053 Chick pea pasta is a great idea although the carb content is much higher. However I prefer doing it with AF myself because it satisfies me more than store bought pasta. When you make your own food, it is filled with more energy and is more healing to the body.
Nick KenMill that stuff is so bad for you and is not gluten free either. I would rather eat real pasta than that stuff. The flour they use has everything that shouldn’t be in your body. Sorry!!
Not liking any of that alternatives, I just eat pasta if I want it to once in a while and get over my craving. I craved pasta maybe three times a year or so.
@@racheal3538 if you get kelp noodles and have them sit in water with lime juice and baking powder for a few minutes it actually reduced the crunchyness the noodles have, i haven’t tried shirataki but I liked the kelp noodles
Ultimately, there really isn't an alternative. Pasta is 100% Pasta. Fortunately for me, I really do like these alternatives... especially the Kelp noodles and Konjac noodles. I've reached a point where I eat them at least 3 times a weak as a fake pho or ramen. I don't even crave pasta at all, but I find myself craving the Kelp noodles for some reason.
Hi! I eat seaweed noodles instead of pasta. A tip: I don't like the rubber taste but if you place the noodles in the pastasauce and then heat the noodles up (in the pasta sauce) then after a minute they become soft like regular noodles/spagetti.
Thanks Thomas. Very informative. I have been using shirotaki miracle noodles for about 2 years. I’ve actually gotten to enjoy these as much as regular pasta. They absorb the flavor of the sauce and you can each a lot without that “I ate too much” feeling. Works great with keto! With good sauce and tons of grated Parmesan cheese - not too much of a sacrifice. Now mash potatoes on the other hand... thanks again!
I've been eating Palmini's hearts of palm noodles for the last couple of months. I really enjoy these as a substitute for pasta. The mineral profile is a bonus! Great video. Thanks Thomas! Palmini even has a Lasagna form that I hear is really good.
Thomas! A FANTASTIC spaghetti/pasta substitute in my opinion is enoki mushroom!! I can’t believe not enough people know about it’s potential use as a substitute! (Especially if you season it well) You should try it and perhaps make a video about it in order to spread the word :)
Honestly giving up sugary things is no problem at all I haven't had any issues with doing that but lordy do I ever crave pasta and bread...I believe I'm completely addicted to it quite honestly and it is definitely my hardest thing to give up.... and not sure what it is about pasta and breads that are just so addictive to me.... it's been the hardest thing to give up and has kept me from doing keto successfully
I used to be big as well and I loved pasta. I don’t eat pasta anymore. I eat zoodles and spaghetti squash but I miss real pasta. I’m glad I found this video.
Thomas DeLauer thank you always!! Because all your videos I am now back on my very old clothes and lost all the (two) baby weight! You are so knowledgeable and easy to understand, thank you again
Shirataki noodles: more commonly referred to and orthodontic rubber bands. I can eat almost anything but these. Thanks for the heads up on the hearts of palm & seaweed noodles.
Thank you for talking about the nutrient profile. I feel like I'm in the minority where I don't like pasta that much - bread is my carb of choice, but I want to make some filling veggie stir fry dishes. I like spaghetti squash but zoodles are always too watery for me. I love zucchini but hate it in noodle form. I forgot that I have a box of heart of palm pasta at home from TJ's - I assumed it would be high carb so have been avoiding it. Good to know that it has some benefits.
I appreciate that you actually put the information in the description. Some of us like to read instead of listening to it. I've subscribed to your channel.
I actually really like zoodles - I started using them as a pasta replacement prior to keto when I wanted a ‘sauce delivery device’ without the starch. I don’t use a KitchenAid attachment...there’s the Inspiralizer and Paderno (?) spiralizers which work really great and are around $30-$40. It’s actually worth it if you eat them a lot bc the prepared noodles are around $8/package in my grocery store. My 2 y.o. Also really likes to watch the veggie turn into ribbons which is an added bonus.
I found a relatively cheap handheld vegetable "spiralizer" (Oxo brand). Works great to quickly shave off loads of zucchini "noodles". Delirious with marinara sauce and mushrooms with a clove of finely chopped garlic. I think it was under 20 bucks.
Hey man, I'm a diabetic.... and am still trying to figure things out. That was a great video, and I'm still trying to figure out which of these taste the best 🙂
Hi, I’m Aussie too, I’ve just discovered Slendier today had the rice version it was so good. I also seen a channel today that states Konjac is bad for you, so now my brain is in a twist what to believe. BUT it was delicious I totally enjoyed it. Is there a certain amount you should have I’m totally new to all these new kind of products. I’m 66 & still learning lol.
I like Spaghetti Squash with extra-virgin olive oil, salt, pepper, and some dried Italian herbs on it. Not a huge fan of it as "a marinara transport agent"--it's OK, but I prefer Zoodles for that. Not all zoodle-makers are expensive. I got one that works like a cheap pencil sharpener--you just put the end of the zucchini (or carrot or whatever) into it and twist. The zoodles come out the side. No moving parts to break and under $20 on Amazon.
Found Konjac/Shirataki noodles in my local shops today In Australia, really enjoyed it. The brand was Calorie Clever and they had Spaghetti, Rice, Fettuccine, and Noodles.
To make kelp noodles softer and taste better all you need to do is put baking soda and vinegar on them for about 10 min until they’re soft and rinse and add something like pesto and it taste really good!
another weird but effective alternative are yellow (wax) beans. It loosely resembles ziti pasta noodles once the sauce and extras are added, and the texture is similar if cooked tender.
I watch your videos faithfully and have learned so much from you! You are very smart and you break things down. You are doing God's work. Keep it up! ❤👑💯
Just seeing this 4 years later. My favorites as Pasta are the zoodles and the Hearts of Palm (which I just found recently at Aldi's and hope they continue selling them). I like the Miracle Noodles too, but more for stir fry than as pasta. Spaghetti Squash I just can't get my taste buds around, nor seaweed noodles. Good to know the nutritional info though.
For those saying doodles are too watery I always cook mine in the microwave for 3 minutes to pull the water out of them. I then drain them, dry with paper towel and then add to my dish and add my cheese, marinara sauce or whatever.
on keto-OMAD for a couple of months now..... love it.......and lost lots of weight.....but I have one sinday per month... and I eat brown spagetti...with meat sauce...or a pizza.... dont care... I love it.... will try shirataki noodles now....
I like the Better Than Pasta spaghetti noodles - it's made of konjac flour combined with gluten-free oatmeal fiber. Still not the same, but makes it much more like the real pasta in terms of colour and texture
Thomas, what do you think of the following noodles (not for keto, but low carb; also, they have the same variations of noodles but with lentils -- any preference for lentils vs. chickpeas?): 1) Banza -- ingredients: Chickpeas, Tapioca, Pea Protein, Xanthan Gum. Does the tapioca ruin this for you, or do you think it's fairly harmless with chickpeas being the dominant ingredient? 2) Barilla Chickpea Noodles -- ingredients: Chickpea Flour only. Is chickpea flour higher glycemic than regular chickpeas, or are these pretty good? Thanks for the help!
Thank you so much for this valuable overview. You keep bringing up the latest and newest trends, which is super cool. I called my Asian store this morning, and they sell palm hearts in glasses (not in tins - I am thrilled!!!) for a reasonable price. Shirtake/konjac noodles I have eaten frequently. Now that I have learnt that eating them reduces the hunger hormone level, I am definitely going to eat them more regularly. The important thing is to *drink a lot of water* when eating konjac.
I also like LaChoy bean sprouts. Boil them and then rinse them with some lemon juice to remove the earthy taste. Virtually zero carbs and has great health benefits. they work great for a spaghetti replacement. Very similar texture and hardly any taste when when boiled and then rinsed with lemon juice. 1 can cost about $1.25 about has around 2 servings.
I love the spaghetti squash and zoodles. The prep for these is not bad. I can't stand the Miracle Noodles and seaweed textures. The prep on the Miracle Noodles start the revulsion before I even get them heated up. Love that Zoodles now come frozen and you can just pop them in the microwave, drain and eat. Great with salmon.
Hearts of Palms are recent in the US, but in South America we have eaten them for years, in Brazil they served them in the steakhouses because it helps digestion and reduce burping after a big meal… and I can certify that 😂😂
Lol making zucchini noodles is so easy, I do these everyday. A machine costs 8 euros here in Germany and the preparation takes 5 minutes. Put some nutritional yeast and garlic and salt/pepper in it or make an avocado/walnut pesto and enjoy the keto meal 😉
I have been doing calories in versus calories out most of my 68 years. It's how I have maintained my ideal weight. I am never hungry. I can eat pretty much what I want. However, I have learned that the foods that fill me up without increasing calories are what I end up eating for the most part. Coincidentally those foods are also whole, unrefined foods. Of all of your recommendations, I have enjoyed shirataki noodles and also slim rice more than the other three. I appreciate this video because it is very valuable information for people who want to reduce their calorie intake, have something tasty to eat, and still feel full. I have never worried much about macro-nutrients. To me it's just calories in versus calories out.
Now there’s palmini heart of palm noodles. You can get spaghetti, angel hair, and lasagna noodles in the Palmini brand. I’ve tried all of these that he covered except the kelp noodles and Palmini is the best in my opinion.
I use all these. Heart of Palm is my favorite. The trick is to rinse, boil, and strain like you would wheat pasta. Makes the texture and flavor spot on. Heaven has a lasagna noodle too that rocks. Thanks Thomas! PS Spaghetti squash becomes a good pantry item in these times. It keeps for a LONG time, and like you said...nutrient dense.
I haven't eaten pasta in years. I actually love zoodles and spaghetti squash. However, I will also use Healthy noodles from time to time. Have you heard of them? You can get them at Costco.
Costco started carrying Shiratake in their refrigerated section and they are REALLY, REALLY GOOD! They have a different texture than other brands I’ve tried. Not as rubbery and more of a soft pasta like texture.
Thomas I purchased a device called VeggettiPro for $20.00 and works awesome at making my Zoodles. It operates manually, but it’s quick and easy to use!! I bought it at Bed,Bath&Beyond!! I highly recommend it. Thought you would like to know!!
I will have to look into some of these for trying to reduce my sugar intake, although the miracle one kinda scares me... after going through colon/rectal cancer and the surgeries that it required. I have had 4 blockages one I went to the hospital for and the rest I applied what I learned in the hospital. Cucumbers and broccoli have tried to take me out.. I chop them up smaller now. But I do obviously forget when in presence of food... but the absorption factors scare me that it might do another blockage, but will see about some of the others. I hear a lot of buzz about keto, but seems like a high priced meal plan to me.
Boy! I love my Zoodles! I wish Spaghetti Squash was available here. Weird that it is not here in Rural Mexico. Hearts of Palm bother me a bit, as I worry about its overall sustainability and ethical harvesting. Last two, only online, from the US with a 50% mark up, so Fine! Sticking to Zoodles. First regular dish I ever switched to Keto was a very basic Spaghetti Dish that we love with lots of garlic, mushrooms, parsley, olive oil and Spanish or Portuguese style Chorizo. Yummy, but oh so fattening if served over the usual box of pasta. Zoodles cleaned that up in a flash!! Thanks Thomas. Great Info as usual.
Have you tried the elbows from the great low carb bread co.? I found them on amazon I havent tried them yet but the ingredients are (in order on label) pea protein isolate, oat fiber, wheat fiber, egg whites, wheat gluten and semolina. I dont want to get kicked out of ketosis but I know I'm human and will maintain my lifestyle especially since I have lost almost 100lbs since last may following a lot of your advice. Thank you thomas for being an inspiration to me and helping me with your videos and saving my life. Have a great day
Harts of palm are soooo good! Lots of people from South America love them! But they are soooo expensive. My family eats them a few times per year because we can’t afford them. They taste so good with lemon and salt.
Informative and applicable as always Thomas. Your love for pasta spoke to my soul. If anyone’s looking for an AMAZING keto pasta recipe made with zucchini and pesto, check out the video on my channel. Rachel ray and Guy Fieri loved it. (Seriously)
I stick to kelp and shirataki.. In Sweden you can get shirataki tagletelli and rice versions. With a good tomato sauce or as a carbonara you can hardly taste the difference.. texture wise.. obviously not "pasta" but the best substitute out there in my eyes.. 👍👍👍
If you like kimchi ...try making the soy garlic and top with homemade kimchi scallions and sesame seeds. And red chili if you like spice. It is sooooo good
I love zoodles, had them with veggie stir fry today and I even posted a video recipe using keto pasta on my UA-cam channel, yummm. Thanks Thomas for great video!
I love the miracle noodles. Yummy and easy to cook with any healthy recipes. But hellà expensive at 5 dollars a tiny pack. Worth it to cook a good pho soup with oxtails broth
Don't like spaghetti squash ,zucchini noodles bean pasta brown rice if organic is ok I like caulipower problem it has corn potatoes starch but I love it
I have found black bean pasta is delicious, but it is difficult to find. Plus it looks like small licorice whips.😂 However, I have gotten beyond worrying about that; it tastes just FINE! I have found them before at Costco, but recently it has been disappearing from there. Maybe if enough people request them, they will come back.

another weird but effective alternative are yellow (wax) beans.
Daniel - yes I think they are a great alternative.
Thomas, what do you think of the following noodles (not for keto, but low carb; also, they have the same variations of noodles but with lentils -- any preference for lentils vs. chickpeas?):
1) Banza -- ingredients: Chickpeas, Tapioca, Pea Protein, Xanthan Gum.
Spaghetti squash, zoodles, hearts of palms , Shiratake noodles, kelp or seaweed noodles. Try edeme noodles lots of fiber.
I'm with you on that pasta Thomas!
🙌🏻! Thanks for watching!!
I learned something new today. Didn’t know there’s a pasta made out of heart of palm. Just ordered it from amazon. Can’t wait to try it
I also like LaChoy bean sprouts.
Rinse the kelp noodle in baking soda and lemon juice the wash in cold water and it will taste delicious
I've not tried the heart of palm spaghetti, but I made a lasagna with the Palmini heart of palm lasagna noodles, and they were on point.
I'm not big on marinara on any pasta substitute but the palmini noodles have a recipe on their page for alfredo that is amazing on hearts of palm.
Sara Mitchell good to know thanks
Nice!
Will have to check that out! Thanks
I purchase them in my local Giant and Harris Teeter. My favorite pasta alternative.
Sara Mitchell it also doesn’t digest and stays in your stool the whole time lol
Thomas I purchased a device called VeggettiPro for $20.00 and works awesome at making my Zoodles. It operates manually, but it’s quick and easy to use!! I bought it at Bed,Bath&Beyond!! I highly recommend it. Thought you would like to know!!
Thomas, you are a god sent. Thank you sooo much for this. You don't know how much you've helped me on my journey so far.
Thanks for watching!!
I love kelp and seaweed thanks for mentioning it. 👍😀
I have a $15 Spiral gadget that works very well to make my zucchini noodles
This is awesome! My husband and I were just talking about low carb noodles yesterday! These are great options! Thank you!!!
Aw man pasta and butter salt pepper but I’ve been to pasta rehab and I’m ok now
🙌🏻
I hear you.
I have been eating palm of hearts for a year and I am loving it. Nice job
It is the betacryptoxanthan in the squash that is protective. It is also in high concentrations in red bell peepers.
Great Info as usual.
kelp noodles are the only way. soak them in lemon juice and baking soda for a few min until soft, they will be abit like overcooked pasta. Delicious!
Your videos have really helped me on my journey to better health thank you very much .
Hearts of palm (palmini) is soo soo soo good. I highly recommend it.
Have a great day
Thank you, Thomas! Everythin tastes good with tomato sauce :) great alternatives!
Thanks for this. I'm going to try the hearts of Palm pasta. Also, noodles and company has zoodles on there menu.
Thanks for watching!
Harts of palm are soooo good! Lots of people from South America love them! But they are soooo expensive. My family eats them a few times per year because we can’t afford them. They taste so good with lemon and salt.
I'm laughing so hard, as soon as he said squash I went to change the channel.
Informative and applicable as always Thomas. Your love for pasta spoke to my soul. If anyone’s looking for an AMAZING keto pasta recipe made with zucchini and pesto, check out the video on my channel. Rachel ray and Guy Fieri loved it. (Seriously)
Lol you’re not kidding. Rachel and Guy really did love it.
Kelp noodles if you use some lemon and baking soda (then rinse it) have a glass noodle texture instead of the crunchy rubbery texture
What are your thoughts on edamame noodle? They taste better than anything else I have tried and they don’t drastically affect my blood sugars.
You look SO well!!!! Well done on the hard work you put in to your body - it pays off MEGA time!!! ;-)
Thank GOODNESS for this video. I’m been craving so much pasta and I can’t ever have any 😭😭😭😭
Now you can! 🙌🏻Thanks for watching!
I love Natural heaven's angel hair 😍 💕and Miracle noodles I've been buying miracle noodles for over a year I'm a type one diabetic on Keto
Love all the info behind each food. Didn’t know that about Spaghetti Squash 🙌🏻
I stick to kelp and shirataki.. In Sweden you can get shirataki tagletelli and rice versions. With a good tomato sauce or as a carbonara you can hardly taste the difference.. texture wise.. obviously not "pasta" but the best substitute out there in my eyes.. 👍👍👍
They are soo good in Asian style dishes
Please make more videos like this! Loved it! 😁
I love zoodle primavera. I use the lowest carb pizza sauce I can find, ten times less sugar than regular jar sauce which I won’t use.
Thanks ever so much for the shirataki noodle recommendation - really looking forward to stir fry again now I've gone keto ☺️
If you like kimchi ...try making the soy garlic and top with homemade kimchi scallions and sesame seeds. And red chili if you like spice. It is sooooo good
Great info Thomas! How many net carbs of tomato sauce would you allow if having a keto pasta dish?
Hearts of palms are also good for salad :-D :-D :-D I grew up eating them!!!
- You can also cook them with ground meat
I love zoodles, had them with veggie stir fry today and I even posted a video recipe using keto pasta on my UA-cam channel, yummm. Thanks Thomas for great video!
Nice! Thanks for watching!
@@ThomasDeLauerOfficial Yayyy! thanks for acknowledging my comment!!!Happy:)
I love the miracle noodles. Yummy and easy to cook with any healthy recipes. But hellà expensive at 5 dollars a tiny pack. Worth it to cook a good pho soup with oxtails broth
Don't like spaghetti squash ,zucchini noodles bean pasta brown rice if organic is ok I like caulipower problem it has corn potatoes starch but I love it
Take care Thomas. Hope you are well. Stay safe!
Thanks! Stay safe as well!
I know, he doesn't look well to me. Maybe tired.
No alternative needed, thanks. 🙏
It is still contains alot of carbohydrates
Thank you for your amazing content!!! We love you
Thanks for watching!
I have tried all the types you mentioned. I would eat any of them again except the kelp noodles. The texture made me think of fishing line.
Lol 🤣🤣🤣
This video is so awesome! Thanks!
