Purple Haze Solo - Jimi Hendrix

  • This is a performance from my video lesson, 'Master The Symmetrical Diminished Scale (Whole Half & Half Whole)'.
    In this guitar solo, I use the chord changes of Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix to demonstrate 'outside' sounding phrases using the Symmetrical Diminished scale. The Half Whole Diminished scale works great to add tension to your phrases, especially over Purple Haze because of the 'Hendrix chord' within the harmony.

    lol, this reminds me of when i was in high school music theory and they told us that the altered scale fits with 7#9 chords. i went to my classic rock band rehearsal later that day and played the altered scale over foxey lady and me and my band mates began to call it the 'all turd scale.'

      This solo makes me feel dumb, but it's (really good) though. I just don't know what to do with it... I could spend a month or a year trying to learn it. . Been there done that got the scars to prove it, I learnt.. . "SCALE HACK: Transform your MINOR BLUES LICKS" .. I got so close but couldn't close the deal, never could quite finish it to where it sounded like the way Barnby plays it. I have a solid body guitar, but it was way more than that. Thanks Sir Robbie, awesome piece, as always. . ua-cam.com/video/9ujOUj10k8I/v-deo.html . Oh, on the video, just learnt the '' The Performance example, and outro " both are at the end of the video. Beautiful, piece of work.

    Very cool lines in and out of key, and such a fluid execution! Love it. Also, the sound has attitude but is not overly gainy. Great work.

    Robbie, do you think you could create a 5-10 minute warmup tutorial on guitar that encompasses every technique you believe to be valuable to help progress ones playing? Ie. The arpegio run through video as a section, scales, alt picking, chord progressions with melodic melodies etc. Just a condensed short run that covers both practical theory, muscle memory and speed with metronome training in all areas. Would be much appreciated!

      I don't think so. Two very different players. Hendrix is still undoubtedly a great influence on the world but to claim that he could do what this guy does is utterly ridiculous to my mind.

    Wonderful! Robbie! Your theory, fretboard knowledge, and inventiveness are some of the best around today. I feel like your next big undertaking might be the right hand. I think you could benefit greatly by adopting the Benson pick-holding technique that's also seen in his protege Peter Farrell as well as young jazz giant Cecil Alexander. It could really take you to the next level i.e the highest level there is. Take this advice FWIW from some random person in YT comments but it is offered as constructive criticism from a guy who already loves your playing. Peace, bro.

    This really exposes what is so great about a guy like Mike Stern. He’s played Hendrix-y jazz funk for 40 years. He’ll play primarily blues stuff and throw in various altered, diminished and whole tone licks. It really works, but just laying on those altered scales for the whole solo is almost kind of funny.

  • @lukewilliamsactual3691
    @lukewilliamsactual3691 10 місяців тому

    That's incredible. Actually, Jimi's solo (in the middle of the song) is entirely in E dorian with the exception of one G#. I read that he used an octave device but, judging from the phrasing, I think he just played artificial harmonics.

      I appreciate the skill too, but this has nothing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Hendrix or Purple Haze. This is jazz noodling to an accelerated generic drum track. Like...wtf are you doing with your life.
