This is the first time I have seen these guys in the flesh. Their harmonies were magical. So sad that they split up before creating lots of lovely CD's for us to enjoy. I only have a couple of their songs on compilations and one or two that I have found on UA-cam.
Their vocal harmonies are intricate, great blend of voices. They only got to make one LP in 1968, 'Emmet Spiceland, The First', plus a handful of singles before and after. Two were on Gael Linn, 'Báidín Fheidhlimí' and 'Ólaim Punch', 'Mary from Dunloe' was on a label called Inset, and 'Bunclody' was on Page One (red label), all c1968. Apparently the LP was deleted not long after its release for whatever reason. Sundry tracks by ES have appeared on the odd compilation CD since the '90s
@@machree01 Their version of Mary from Dungloe is iconic and quite beautiful....what are the origins of this song and was the annual festival based around it....
Brilliant footage and great song from a bunch of classy lads mixing proper Irish ballads and sixties beat. Pity you did not come to Dalymount Park. Crowd would have gone mad! ⚽️
I remember this well. I was at my first ever All Ireland hurling final on the day that song was performed between Tipperary and Wexford. From a sporting perspective it was disappointing to see my native Tipp lose but Wexford deservedly took the honours that day. This rendition of this song was as good as Wexford's second half performance when they outscored Tipp by 4-5 to 2-1, and it deservedly made the Irish charts later. In truth it's a far better song than Slievenamon, the Tipp anthem
where is this album! had it on cassette years ago but it does appear to be available easily. Have to go to Japan to buy it. But great great stuff. Great harmonies .
Donal Lunny has been around forever. Immense contribution to Irish folk and trad music.
I 💚 this Bunclody by Spiceland

I recall frequently hearing them live in the mid 60s...they used to sing at the ballad sessions in UCD...ah the times!

So the album has since been added to both itunes and spotify thankfully. Their Curragh of Kildare is equally good as the Johnstons version.
