Brief update per request on another reply:
I'm still very pleased with the unit. No major changes from my initial impressions as of right now. I'll likely be putting up another video within the next couple of weeks once I get my frontrunner rack and iKamper Mini bolted on top.
I did do a "spray test" earlier today, with a typical garden hose jet along all seams. I did get some "splash" type water intrusion, but based on the pattern and location of the splashes it looked to be through the side seams in the tailgate before it meets the cap, and not the SmartCap itself. I blasted all windows, joints, and the vent up top, and had no pooled water inside. I expect zero water intrusion as a result of rainfall or snow melt.
The Ikamper mini is an awesome tent however since the bed cap is the same hight as the roof have you thought about checking the GFC super light tent? You would same money because it's half the price of the Ikamper which I'm sure wouldn't be hard to sell you would save weight and have better stream lining and be less top heavy. Just a thought. This was a great video 👍
Thanks for the comment! I did look in to the GFC, and liked what I saw, but it's too long for my application at 90 inches. With just a 60 inch bed, I'd have a significant amount of overhang on the cab, which would take up real estate from my eventual over the cab rack, where I will store my solar panels, fuel, and various other weatherproof cargo when out in the field. Despite its height, the Skycamp Mini is the perfect tent for my specific vision and application.
I do appreciate the input. Again, GFC makes excellent products, but this time around it just wasn't the piece of gear that worked the best for me.
@@TerraOutdoors Check out the CVT mount hood tent. It’s a hard clam shell that’s a little shorter. I’m 6’1" and I fit perfectly in it.
Thanks for the suggestion FatherTime! While I do dig CVT products (my last tent and awning setup was CVT), and I did consider the new Mt. Hood as well, it would have led to the same issue as the GFC tent mentioned above. The bed on the Gladiator is very short, so I had to keep the tent length to less than 60 inches in order to avoid overhang on the cab or off of the rear. For that reason, the Skycamp Mini was the perfect balance of weight, ease of setup, and physical dimensions (internal and external). At nearly 6'5", I still have a few inches to spare in the Mini, without it taking up real estate from my eventual over-the-cab rack.
@@TerraOutdoors Right on that makes sense, yeah you've got very little real estate up there on top of the gladiator shell. Once again thanks for the quick and great response! Best wishes and happy holidays...
You did a better review then the manufacturer. Solid
Thanks! I appreciate it. I'm still digging it after putting it through its paces. It has a couple of flaws, but all in all I think it's a fantastic cap.
Thats one cool Gladiator, like the smart cab especially because its inline with the roof.
Thanks!
Yeah, that's definitely one of the things that originally drew me to it. It follows the lines of the vehicle quite well I think.
Looks incredible. Great looking rig.
Appreciate it! It's coming along. Just a few more additions and tweaks and the core of it will be complete!
Just now finding you and I gotta say that you are doing Great in the early stages of your channel. Also, I'm liking the fact that you're a "local" TN entry to the Jeep Overlander community. Thanks for takin us along for the Ride. As I like to say, "Keep on Jeepin"...
Thanks for checking out the channel! And, I appreciate that!
I've been in to overlanding for several years now, but only this time around did I decide to actually try to start filming some stuff. Even if no one else likes it, it makes for good memories to look back on during times where I can't readily travel!
Great review! Thinking of getting one for my red launch edition gladiator, love all the options this top has.
Thanks!
I'm a big fan of the black on red color scheme myself. It really is a well thought out cap too. I think you'll be very happy with it if you decide to go that route.
Great and very informative video. Just purchased a Gladiator Rubicon last weekend and was trying to decide between the RSI Smartcap, the RLD Design cap and the Alu-cab Contour; you've just sold me on the RSI.
I'm glad I could help! I don't think that you'll be disappointed with your choice. You can't go wrong with any of those caps in my opinion, but the RSI really is fantastic.
Nice set up.
Appreciate it!
The video section to watch begins at ~9:20 -> 10:40.
At that point, the view is forward looking. Top perspective from the rear of the canopy.
The Jeep roof is in front (towards the visible roadway).
At the time frame, the fellow's hand is touching the roof top vent. The underside, rear edge appears to me to show the ventilation slot.
As you watch the video it certainly appears as if the underside edge of the rear of that structure is the ventilation section.
The fellow slips his fingers within and describes some sort of breathable 'fabric' filtration within.
He surmises it keeps dust and junk out of working it's way into the canopy. Comments it somehow keeps rain out as well, though he has not yet figured out how that works.
As I look at it, that position of the vent does not make sense to pressurize the inside of the canopy? 🤔
That would require "laminar airflow"; which requires one hell of a speed of movement. Especially considering neither the 'vent' nor the canopy roof are not aerofoil shaped. Warp factor 6, I guess???? Helluva Jeep for that!!!
Unless the front side has the same ventilation with some form of mechanical, 'wind pressure' activated movable flap which would seal the rearward edge vent to exclusively permit the canopy 'pressurization' effect while driving? That would be pretty impressive to design. 🤔
Has me wondering. Would be good to see a closer view... Unless, of course, the fellow misassembled the roof top orienting it backwards? 🤔 If the vent is supposed to be located close to the Jeep's roof; instead of toward the rear of the canopy?
Hmmmm... That seems to be more likely. I cannot imagine the canopy manufacturer being that proficient at engineering a complicated roof top ventilation system????
I'm not sure if there's a specific question wrapped up in here to be addressed! There are some talking points though.
I don't understand the vent, I just know what it was described as by the manufacturer. Unfortunately, I don't have the money to throw around to sacrifice the roof panel by pulling it apart in the name of science. 😅 I will say however that over 2 years later, it has yet to leak.
In terms of the roof panel, it is installed correctly. You can also see that the position on the manufacturer's page matches mine.
Beautiful truck man..
Thanks!
Thats a really good looking bed cover.
Agreed! I'm loving this thing. I think RSI hit the nail on the head with it.
Great review. If I get one as my next rig my first mod will be some type of cap- maybe something like a GoFast Camper or maybe a more traditional- in order to store my mountain bike away from the elements and thieves. I like the RSIs a lot and this was super helpful. Have fun with your rig. Love the color and set up.
I tend to put a cap on every truck I own. I rarely haul anything taller than the roof line, and I love having that huge amount of waterproof, dustproof, lockable storage. A cap really turns a truck in to a swiss army knife, in my opinion.
Glad the review was helpful, and thanks for the kind words!
@@TerraOutdoors yup. I feel exactly the same.
Awesome
Thanks! It's a great cap.
Thanks for the review! Debating between RSI and Alu Cab. The local RSI distributor is a bit lack luster. Keep us posted on your evolving set up!
I looked at AluCab as well. I honestly don't think that you can go wrong with any of the current steel/aluminum offerings (RSI, RLD, AluCab). For me personally, it boiled down to the modularity and aesthetics of the RSI. As of right now, based off of what I have seen and read, I cannot recommend A.R.E. (CX Classic/HD are both available), which is unfortunate because their products have been fantastic on all other models that I have seen. It sounds like they have some kinks to work out on the Gladiator offering, particularly with paint matching.
Typically I'm all about function over form, but if I can have both, especially on a piece that is going to drastically change the way that my rig looks, I'll opt for that route. For me personally, RSI checked all of the right boxes.
Those are nice I believe “the story till now” channel, he just put one on his Gladiator.
Indeed he did. I chatted with him on one of the numerous facebook groups about it, and he said that my videos were a determining factor in his choice. I'm a big fan of his channel, so I thought that was pretty cool. He puts out some awesome content. It seems like the cap has been serving him well too!
Nice
😎
I have no need for one but I want one now!
Haha, sorry about that!
The RSI's look shit-hot on the Jeeps, nice work bro.
Thanks man! I agree, they really do. I'm 100% happy with it. If you're curious, feel free to check out my most recent (final review) video on it or my build update video. Those showcase a bit more on what I've done with the cap and my thoughts on it.
Would love to see an update review since it’s been more than a year with your tent and gear setup.
I actually did put up an extended review, so you can check that out on my channel if interested, but it is about time for a final long term one. That's one of the next videos I had planned. Spoiler alert: I still love it, but I'll be sure to deep dive when I put the review together.
Hey man love your content!
I am getting my RSI smartcap tomorrow, putting it on my gladiator along with a hard shell tent. I’ve watched through your stuff a few times while making the decisions and waiting.
Where are you located? And are you planning on expanding a bit(travels and content etc)?
Thanks Dylan!
Awesome! You're going to love the setup man.
I live in middle TN, just outside of Nashville. I definitely will be creating more content--hopefully in the near future. Work has been pretty relentless this past year so I haven't gotten out nearly as much as I've wanted to. I'm hoping to squeeze in and film one or two more quick trips this fall!
Great review, been looking at these for my gladiator. Would you mind doing a video with the doors and roof off with the cap?
I can definitely do that once it warms up a little. I have no intention of removing anything until it gets back in to at least the 50s though haha.
@@TerraOutdoors No doubt! We just got about 12 inches of snow over the past week so I totally understand
Please update. I've been considering the RSI Smart Cab also for my gladiator. Thanks.
I blasted all windows, joints, and the vent up top, and had no pooled water inside. I expect zero water intrusion as a result of rainfall or snow melt.
Definitely looks like a quality piece. It does seem to be a bit short for the bed though. Like maybe if it was 2 or 3 inches longer overall, you might not have as big of a gap between the bed and cap. Maybe even have better luck with that gasket seal over the tailgate. I hope it fits your plans and excursions. Enjoy your adventures.
Hey Raymond! Thanks for the comment.
I haven't watched this video all the way through in some time...but I don't recall mentioning a big gap between the bed and the cap? If anything, I think I said it was *too* tight of a fit. I've gotten used to just popping the tailgate and the window at the same time though--problem solved. Or are you referring to the gap between the front of the cap and the rear of the cab? If so, you definitely want that gap there, because if you get flexy, you're going to have a bad time with a steel cap contacting your fiberglass top. Even so, it's a pretty tight squeeze. Maybe 1.5"? I personally have no qualms with its dimensions.
I actually plan on putting out a final "long-term" video on this to finish off my review. I'm still absolutely loving this thing.
Happy adventuring!
Great review, I've been considering getting one of these for a bit. they look the best out of all the other cabs out there. Have you notice any dropping on your suspension? I'm assuming that there is some due to the weight of the cab, have you upgraded your suspension? Thanks for the time and awesome video, cheers
Appreciate it! Thanks for the kind words.
My suspension absolutely did drop. It was pretty bad when fully loaded up on stock suspension. The body roll was excessive. The Rubicon stock suspension is notoriously soft, and this was exacerbated by the extra weight. On trips, at highway speed, I would occasionally get dangerous sway/wallowing after hitting a bump. I recently did upgrade my suspension and it was a complete success. No more issues, and it rides better now fully loaded than it did when it was stock and unloaded. I didn't realize how bad it was until I made the swap.
I have long-term and final impressions videos of the RSI up on my channel, as well as an install of my new suspension if you're interested. Feel free to check it out!
Great review! How is the space inside the topper? Can you stand up 2 bicycles side by side inside with the topper for example?
Thanks!
It's more than adequate for me personally. I'm definitely not hurting for space on trips. Regarding bikes, to be honest, I haven't owned one in probably 20 years, so I can't say. I would say the width is there, but the height would depend on the bike itself, or whether or not you could remove the wheels. The roof is pretty much flush with the cab, so there is a good bit of vertical space!
I just submitted a pre order for my Gladiator. I looked at RLD and Alu Cab along with A.R.E. RSI to me is the best option. I'm going with the EVOc...I don't want side windows and I want the security screen. Looking for more security. Anyway, I'll keep checking in on you....so far it sounds like you are happy with yours.
Awesome! I'm sure you'll love it.
If the EVOc was available now, I'd probably have gone that route instead. It's slated for Jan 2021 right now though I believe. Either way, I'm very happy so far.
@@TerraOutdoors Yeah, hopefully in Jan....I'm not in a hurry as I currently have a hard side triple folding tonneau that works fine for now....but I've been searching for just the right topper and the RSI seems like the best choice....plus it looks the best on the Gladiators..
How do the five separate pieces connect to each other? Is it something that clamps down on the seals between the parts? One one thing I was surprised to see was that there were no screens on the vent windows... also I wish they had a lock system that would incorporate with an electron a key fob. Thanks for the great video, quality content...
The roof is the main panel, and the rest of the components attach to it. The side panels connect to the top by slotting in to place with tension (I tapped them in to place with a rubber mallet) and fastening hardware. The front and rear flanges have hardware all around the perimeter that attach them to the roof and side panels.
It would be nice if they had an option for screens. I was a bit surprised at that myself. Not a huge issue for me personally, but I know it would be for some people. Also, an electronic latch certainly would be nice!
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for checking it out!
@@TerraOutdoors Right on thanks for the quick and thorough reply. Happy trails...
What did you think of the assembly and installation? How do you think all of the gaps turned out? The finish is not powder coat, it is paint. Looking at one of these for my Colorado. Also looking at the RLD cap.
Haha, yeah I found that out about the paint after some pinstriping on a trip I took after this. Not a huge deal really.
Assembly and install weren't bad at all. I did it solo on my garage floor in about 3 hours taking my time. The cap is an easy two person lift (in my opinion). The front and rear flanges were a little frustrating; trying to balance the panel leaning against my body while reaching over to install/tighten hardware, but I've definitely done worse projects before.
I was honestly very surprised with just how tight the gaps are...rather, the lack thereof. There honestly aren't any that I (or pressurized water) have found just yet. Just some spray through the sides of the tailgate. Once I tightened everything down and mounted it, I couldn't distinguish it from a one-piece cap. RSI's weather seals seem phenomenal so far.
curious if you've added any additional seals along the tailgate to help with dust/water coming in along there?
Nope! The only intrusion I've had is seemingly through the gaps in the tailgate itself, not through where the shell meets the tailgate. The rearmost inch or so of the bed got dusty after a couple hundred miles of trail through Arkansas, but that was about it. I've had no issues with water.
I imagine it'd be easy to slap on a couple of thin adhesive gaskets to improve the seal if you're having issues, but I personally haven't had a need to.
Looks great! What is the total weight of the topper?
Thanks!
The bill of lading said 300 pounds for shipping weight. Truthfully, I think that's a bit of an overestimate, as I was able to *fairly* easily maneuver it myself once I managed to get it up on my bed. The RSI site claims approximately 175 pounds. That seems more accurate to me.
What seat covers are on your Jeep? Do you like them?
They're from PRP. Custom ordered tweed/cordura/vinyl. I love them. PRP was a great company to deal with. The covers are beefy, but still fit like a glove. Not a single complaint on them.
How did you mount the second rsi roof rack over the cab?
I don't have an RSI roof rack. They're both Frontrunner racks.
The over-the-cab rack is a JT-specific kit that drills through the roof and attaches to the roll bars, and also ties in to the cowl bolts with supports on the front side.
Feel free to check out my build walkaround video for additional details. I believe I cover it in decent depth over there.
Any sag in the suspension from the weight? Do they list the weight? Also, what is the cost of this cap? Thx
I did lose a little bit--somewhere between 1/4" and 1/2" depending on what surface I'm parked on. I had about 1/2" of rake though, so it actually got me closer to level. I can't recall where I saw the weight listed, but I remember seeing it at around 175 pounds. That feels about right.
Right now, the cap is in an extended pre-order phase (as manufacturing ramps up I assume) and is $3,695, per the manufacturer site. They're offering free shipping until the pre-order period ends, which saves an extra $150 or so. It's definitely costly, but I'm very pleased with it.
I’m not sure where you live, but have you had any issues with the latches freezing in the cold? I’m in Alaska and I know some people have problems with that. Otherwise I think this is the perfect shell
I have definitely had those issues. The latches are great in warm weather, but they do falter in the cold. I've had mine freeze shut several times now. I suspect a can of lock de-icer would help a lot, but I haven't tried it just yet.
@@TerraOutdoors thanks. That’s what I figured. My local dealer said RSI is working on a solution but no word yet on when that will be available
@@michaelgriffith2762 I'd be very interested to see what that solution is.
We had a bit of winter weather down here a couple of weeks back. Freezing rain was a factor. Granted, I don't expect much of anything to function well in freezing rain--but the latches sometimes refuse to pop even if it's simply cold. They would need a bit if extra motivation, by either striking the latch or repeatedly pressing the button. I noticed that it would start happening in the mid 20s (F) or so. Truthfully, I think that I would have preferred a simple rotary lock. If RSI were to offer a replacement kit, I would probably make the change.
where did you get the seat covers?
Direct from PRP! They're fantastic. Feel free to check out my newest video for a better look. I cover the sear covers on the interior portion of the build video.
What lift you got
I didn't have one on when I shot this video. Stock Rubicon suspension. Check out the newest video on my channel though for my Clayton 2.5" install, if you're interested.
What is your suspension set up? Did the cap cause any sagging for the rear end?
At the time of this video, it was a stock Rubicon suspension on 35s. Today, it's on 37s with a Clayton 2.5" lift kit, Falcon 3.3s, HD rear springs, and SumoSprings bump stops replacements.
No noticeable sag from just the cap on either suspension setup. If I recall, it barely weighs 100 lb and is pretty well distributed. I was able to put it on my back like a turtle shell and step up into the bed to mount it.
Thank you so much for the reply!!! I really appreciate it. Your videos have been a huge help throughout my spec’ing and build.
@JamesMcGinn14 For sure. Glad to hear they've helped!
Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions, and if you want a closer look at my current suspension setup, check out the Clayton video I posted a while back. 👍🏽
What seats are thoes?
Rubicon cloth seats, with custom PRP seat covers.
Overall it seems to be a quality product. The only thing I didn’t like is its odd design that actually does not follow the gladiator lines...❗️
Haha, no kidding!
I don’t like the gap between the car rear window and the front of the cap.
There has to be some type of gap in order to keep the two components from rubbing and to allow for flex. I suppose some type of weather stripping could be run around the perimeter to address that issue from an aesthetic standpoint, but physically moving the cap any closer to the rear of the cab would undoubtedly result in damage to one or both pieces.
Does it work with a soft top?
Yup! (Not tested myself, but shown in action in a video from the manufacturer on the gladiator forum)
@@TerraOutdoors have a link?
I couldn't find the original Gladiator forum post, but here's their video here on UA-cam:
ua-cam.com/video/2bDpjAVCI_I/v-deo.html
There is more footage out there somewhere, because I recall watching them removing the corner panels and sliding the rear window out of place too without having to remove the cap, but this should give you an idea!
@@TerraOutdoors perfect thanks, you like yours? I know you said you wish you would've gotten then molle panel hatches.
No problem!
Yeah, I still love this thing. I was a little salty that the Adventure model wasn't available or even announced when I purchased mine, but I guess that's the risk of being an early adopter. It's still a fantastic cap, and honestly I could probably easily come up with a window storage open that works just as well.
Can’t wait to see when you have the FR rack on top! What’s your IG?
Appreciate it. I can't wait to get the parts in and bolted up myself!
I haven't been too active on IG lately, but I do plan to start posting again once the build is (nearly) complete. It's elevateexpeditions.
Thanks for checking me out!
Silicone those edges around the tailgate rubber seals.
A year later, and it still doesn't both me that much. I've gotten a bit of dust intrusion after hours of high speed on dirt roads/trails, but nothing major. I may do that in the future, but it's really not a big concern.
@@TerraOutdoors That's awesome! How are your bolts holding up. I saw another review where they gather some surface rust. This just looks like a solid kit. I really would like to get one of these for my 2016 Ram 1500 Limited.
@@TerraOutdoors and thanks for a very informative review.
For sure! Glad you enjoyed it. I'm actually planning on putting together one last update for my long term impressions soon with all of the pros and cons that I've come across.
I haven't had issues with any of the bolts rusting. The only thing of note is that the assembly bolts on the inside did loosen up significantly, which I didn't notice until about 2 or 3 months of ownership. I re-torqued everything, and have had no issues since. I check them every couple of months just to be safe. Aside from that, this thing has been bulletproof, and has taken hundreds of pounds of weight up top across thousands of miles and some pretty sketchy angles. I'm very happy with it.
$3600...a lot to absorb. Looks great though!
Thanks! You're definitely not wrong in that though. For a piece this crucial, I wanted it to be a (cost aside) no regrets buy once and cry once type of purchase. I'd have hated to get a different cap, plan all of this out, start moving stuff up top, then realize that it doesn't work after all. So I bit the bullet up front, and I'm honestly glad that I did.
Um,um,um,um,um.
I'll take that as constructive criticism? Haha.
These first couple of videos were the first ones that I've ever done, and public speaking is way out of my comfort zone. It's been a learning experience, but if you watch later videos you'll notice significantly fewer "um"s. I'm working on getting better about it with each one!
Thanks for checking it out!
