Tech Talk | Tires - Winter Traction. All-terrain Tires (BFG KO2) vs. Winter Tires
The second installation of my tech talk on tires digs a bit deeper into what makes for a good winter tire, and how winter traction translates to all-terrain tires, such as the 37x12.50R17 BFG KO2s that I have on my Jeep.

@@SuperSamiam25 Thanks for your valuable input! 😂
I love mine in everything with the exception of snow/ice roads. They aren’t useless but they are not great and break free on hilt roads even cruising at 20-30mph. In fresh snow roads, less than an inch, unplowed, braking was not good at all. 22 JT 37x12.5x17
To be fair, very few tires outside of specialized applications/studs are great on ice. There certainly are great snow tires though, and as you said, the Ridge Grapplers are not that. I loved them in the general offroad situations I used them in though. The tread and the sidewall were great. I switched to 37x12.50R17 BFG KO2s mid-last winter when I moved to upstate NY, and I am much happier. I've bashed through literal feet of snow without issue. Dedicated snow tires would still be far superior, but I would lose offroad utility. As far as all-terrain tires go, the BFGs are a great choice. I have a video on my channel with my impressions on those as well, if you're interested.
@ yeah will definitely be going with K03s for mine and the wife’s. I actually got them free, and like you said they excel at everything else very well, so unless you are in snow/ice, I HIGHLY recommend the Nitto’s. But, if you live in a heavy freeze area, gotta say KO’s are still king. Our KO2’s where great last year in the snow in NJ. I will also note, my General Grabber ATX’s where phenomenal in the cold weather as well, but they where not as quite as I want. The Nitto’s and properly rotated KO’s are basically silent
Thank you for this video! The best analysis and real info. I think you’re the first person to say winter tires will be better than AT. As a new Jeep owner I was struggling with this and decided to run winter tires (in Canada) but always wondered. Thank you
This video on relocating the satellite antenna for my 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL was fantastic! The steps were clear, concise, and easy to follow, making the process straightforward. I appreciated the attention to detail in explaining the tools and techniques needed for the job. The only small area for improvement would be providing more explicit guidance on the antenna cable routing. However, I saw this as an opportunity to get creative and tailor the solution to your specific setup. Overall, a great resource for any Jeep enthusiast tackling this project! Highly recommend it to others.
What about the tire pressure ? I just got a set for my jeep and wonder how low I can go , but still be safe on the road.
@jimbodini100 There are too many factors associated with that to say for sure. For example, with beadlocks and stiffer sidewalls, you could easily get down into the single digits PSI. For me, personally, I'm not bringing mine down past 15 psi off road, and 25 or so on road. Higher speed driving creates more friction and isn't well suited to lower tire pressures. Generally, with good snow tires, you're fine simply maintaining street pressure while on the road.
thanks for the latch tip.
great install video. Jack stands on the frame, not the sliders allows for much more droop of the suspension. No need to ratchet the coils as they slip right in on full droop.
I get the ranger with its shorter wheelbase, but why the gladiator, why get that instead of one of the F150's? The gladiator looks similar wheelbase length to the F150, but less comfortable, is it just bigger tires and more road clearance perhaps, why? Thanks.
Because Jeep! I wanted a fun, unique vehicle--something a bit rough around the edges. The Ranger and the F-150 don't excite me. Sure, they're capable, and I have no doubt they're more comfortable than the JT, but they simply aren't what I was looking for. Front/rear lockers from the factory, better tire clearances, one of the deepest aftermarkets in the industry, and one of the best communities aren't bad selling points either. There is no one perfect vehicle for any application, but the JT was definitely the best all-around choice for me. ✌🏼
Drinking game. Take a drink every time you hear the umm.
@@MJOG I don't think you're ready for that one. 😂 My earlier videos were a bit rough, for sure. We all start somewhere!
I love the lights on the load bars! Can you share any info, please? Thanks!
@raheemdaya9055 Thanks! If you're talking about the red/amber marker lights, I have a whole video dedicated to those. Feel free to check that out for the details, and let me know if you have any questions.
So here we are almost a year and a half later, Are you still liking it? My kit has been in the shop since december and I am finally getting around to install it next week
Dang, since December? That's quite some time. I still love it. The ride is better than factory. No wallowing or sway, regardless of the situation. It's exactly what I was looking for. Admittedly, the ride in the rear is a tiny bit firmer than I'd like when unloaded. I opted for the HD rear springs. On the other hand, it rides perfectly when loaded down, so that's a reasonable tradeoff for me. Overall, I'd make the same choice again without hesitation. Hope you enjoy it!
@@TerraOutdoors nice. I opted for the HD springs as well. I have a shell and all the gear. Plus I just got my OGT Expedition trailer which is what really prompted the urgency to get the lift on. I’ll be posting about it soon. Yeah, long time but I’m a trucker so to me that was like a couple weeks ago. Lol
@@TerraFirmaX Haha, nice. Yeah, I suppose that's true. I'm certainly not mad about going with the HD springs. I'd rather have a slightly harsher ride unloaded than be unsafe when loaded. I also run SumoSpring bump stop replacements in the rear, and they've been great.
I know I’m late to the party cuz this video is a year old. How do you like the kit after this amount of time. I’m close to pulling the trigger on it… but I’m concerned about some of the bad reviews…. Considering going with fox shocks… any new thoughts?
I had heard there were some negative reviews here and there, but the suspicion on forums and whatnot was that it came from improper installation. From my experience, Clayton reviews have been mostly positive. I don't have anything bad to say about the kit, myself. Easy install, and it has performed flawlessly. I love the adjustable shocks. If I could change one thing, I *may* go with softer springs in the rear. I upgraded to the HD because of my setup. It rides perfect when loaded down for a trip, but it's a bit stiff daily driving. All in all, I'd say don't hesitate if you're in the market for a kit.
@@TerraOutdoors I really appreciate the response. I went ahead and ordered it…. Minus the HD rear springs. Still deciding on shocks. Thanks!
@noneckjoe948 No problem at all. Nice! I don't think you'll be disappointed. I've heard great things about Fox as well, so I'm sure you can't go wrong with either. Enjoy!
links to purchase kit >???????
Just look up Clayton's Gladiator Overland Plus kits. That should give you all the available options.
Why do you need the rubber pad? Can’t you just mount the antennae straight to the metal?
Just a personal choice, really. Mainly for isolation and vibration. I figured it may help, since it's not flush mounted like it was on the rollbar.
Ok thanks. So I just finished my install and my reception is crap in that same spot - Almost as bad as under the rack in the original spot!
@@cdnjeepoverland Oof. I've had some intermittent issues when driving north--I imagine because the satellites are off to my south, and the signal is trying to reach back through my vehicle--but overall it was a drastic improvement for me, personally.
@@TerraOutdoors I might just mount the antenna to the actual rack. Another day.
@@cdnjeepoverland I've considered doing that myself. I'll update here if I ever get around to it.
How did you mount the second rsi roof rack over the cab?
I don't have an RSI roof rack. They're both Frontrunner racks. The over-the-cab rack is a JT-specific kit that drills through the roof and attaches to the roll bars, and also ties in to the cowl bolts with supports on the front side. Feel free to check out my build walkaround video for additional details. I believe I cover it in decent depth over there.
I did this relocation yesterday and it worked great - thanks! A couple of notes from my project: I removed the tweeter cover and A pillar cover (grab handle) from the passenger side and dropped the windshield all the way to make it easier to thread the cable through. I also found the bolt that shipped with the antenna (I bought new) was too short to allow me to use a rubber pad, so I used an M6x1 30mm bolt with flat and lock washers.
Nice! Glad it worked out!
What is your suspension set up? Did the cap cause any sagging for the rear end?
At the time of this video, it was a stock Rubicon suspension on 35s. Today, it's on 37s with a Clayton 2.5" lift kit, Falcon 3.3s, HD rear springs, and SumoSprings bump stops replacements. No noticeable sag from just the cap on either suspension setup. If I recall, it barely weighs 100 lb and is pretty well distributed. I was able to put it on my back like a turtle shell and step up into the bed to mount it.
Thank you so much for the reply!!! I really appreciate it. Your videos have been a huge help throughout my spec’ing and build.
@JamesMcGinn14 For sure. Glad to hear they've helped! Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions, and if you want a closer look at my current suspension setup, check out the Clayton video I posted a while back. 👍🏽
KRCA092T - is this the rack and mounts you have on the smartcap?
Please disregard my last message if you saw it. I somehow managed to completely miss the part number that you posted... I added the rack prior to Frontrunner coming out with a specific kit. I ordered the universal canopy tray, sized 1425mm(W) X 1358mm(L), part number RRSTJ07; a set of their RSI-specific track inserts, part number RRAC921; and a set of the 70-80mm feet, part number FASS013. It fits well, and I have had zero issues since install. If I did it again today, I would just fire and forget on the rack kit that you mentioned, since I imagine it is an all-in-one kit.
Are you using the min length for track bar and arms ? Or max?
Edit: I checked the instructions, and I don't see a min/max range as you mentioned. Clayton gives a specific target value for each height of lift. That's what I used. For the 2.5" Lift Front lowers: 24.336" Front uppers: 20.272" Rear lowers: 23.962" Rear uppers: 16.577" Front track bar: 34.090" Rear track bar: 33.869" Obviously, those are pretty dang precise. Mine aren't exactly that, but I got them as close as I could and made sure all matching components were even in length.
exactly what I was looking for, thanks!
Happy to help!
Cr555 isn’t far from where I live the muddy sand is soft enough in the washouts that you can dig another path out the other side ask me how I know diesel gladiator on 40s
Nice! I loved the area. I did consider that but ultimately decided that I wasn't feeling that bold, especially in the rain. I knew I could get back up the track behind me, but the way ahead was looking pretty sketchy. I still had a blast either way!
Great video. After 3 years, how's it holding up? Are you still happy with it?
Appreciate it! I like it a lot. It has been used and you can tell, but the deck is still holding up very well and hasnt worn through anywhere. No signs of stress/damage anywhere. It adds a lot of value and utility to the bed, I think. You do lose a little bit of vertical space, but being able to slide out my fridge, my sleeping gear, my kitchen, my spare clothes, my lantern, etc., all at once, is very handy vs. just a fridge slide. I wouldn't change my choice!
This is exactly the issue I have after installing an Ursa Minor camper on my JLU. Thanks and great video. Subscribed!
Those Ursa Minor units are incredibly cool. I'm still holding out hope they may make one for the JT. They claimed they would. We'll see! Appreciate it! FYI, I do notice some hiccups when driving basically due north, I assume because the antenna is trying to "reach back" to the south through my front roof rack/solar panel. It is performing far better than it was before, however. I went from having reception maybe 10% of the time (on a good day) to 95% of the time. That's a win to me!
Stock suspension right? Any rub with them 35s?
At this point, yes. I never experienced rub, and I ran this wheel/tire/suspension setup for over 3 years.
Any updates on how they handled snow with more wear on them? TIA
I took them off at around 40,000 miles (I went up in size). No major complaints. I never got them into any significant snow accumulation--6" to 8" tops. They're decidedly not winter tires, but they performed well enough in every situation I threw at them.
What type of control arm joint are they using? They used to supply Currie Johnny Joints, but those look like clevites or maybe dual durometer style.
The product page says they're GIIRO dual durometer, self-centering joints.
@@TerraOutdoors Thanks!
@@jerrymcgeorge4117 No problem!
Another Great video, Marshall ...... you made me think about my setup :) ... I have basically the same setup as you on my Gladiator. I no longer use Sirius Radio, but I do wonder if my GPS signal could be affected with my 200w solar panel positioned over my freedom panels. I'm going to toss this around and do a little research, but I'll probably follow your advise on this project :) thanks, Joe
Thanks, Joe! Admittedly, I never noticed any huge issues with GPS. It was mainly the Sirius. I'm sure it couldn't hurt to do the relocation, though!
Great video, I also drive a Gladiator Rubicon, but live in Nova Scotia, with all the wet snow and ice, I remove my all terrains and install a dedicated winter tire with studs for winter driving. It is night and day performance in icy or snow covered roads. Great videos, keep it up, I am using a lot of your ideas to help customize my Gladiator.
That definitely sounds like the best option for your road conditions up there! I really would like to try out some dedicated winter tires on the Gladiator someday. Appreciate the kind words!
I think I will purchase one for my 2020 Gladiator Rubicon, I am also function over style but this cap seems to function very well with a great aesthetic. My Gladiator is also Red and seeing how good it looks in this video sold me.
I don't think you'll be disappointed! It's the best purchase that I've made for the Gladiator to date.
How do you like the steering kit and falcon stabilizer?
It's far better than it was before. The steering doesn't feel like it's on rails or anything, and it's not comparable to a standard passenger sedan or SUV, but it's comfortable enough for me.
Great video ... glad to see you posting videos again :)
Appreciate it! I really do try to be better about posting more frequently. Life is crazy, though!
Enjoying your channel and admiring your well thought out mods. Thanks for taking the time to film and document your adventures. I’m curious, with the addition of the Clayton suspension can you get into your garage with the tent installed?
Appreciate it! Even before the lift (just 35s), I couldn't get into the garage with the tent on. There's no chance now, unfortunately.
Thanks for the quick reply and info. I’m considering a gladiator to replace my 2015 JKUR. Fitting into garage is a nice to have but not essential
@JR-ro5kv No problem! Yeah, it definitely is nice. Some day, I'll have a large enough garage/workshop!
Is winter tire safe when airing down to 10 PSI? Do they have enough puncture resistance? There are places where sharp stones are underneath the snow.
It *can* be safe, but here are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Be careful airing down in the cold. If you park in a garage and your tires are warm at the time you air down, once your tires cool down, your tire pressure may drop significantly more than you expected. A good rule of thumb is to plan for 1 PSI drop per 10 degrees F drop in temperature. Your target of 10 PSI could end up becoming 6 PSI, for example. This unexpected drop could create a dangerous conditions. 2. You may need specialized wheels, such as beadlocks, for tire pressures that low. The lowest that I personally go without beadlocks is around 15 PSI. The safe amount will vary based on your vehicle weight and your tires. 3. Puncture resistance may be slightly reduced, but in general, you shouldn't have any issues aired down on mild-moderate terrain. Having said all of that: 4. If we're talking winter tires and not all-terrain, you shouldn't really need to air them down. Winter tires are designed to provide superior grip in winter conditions at road pressure. Ultimately, be sure to refer to the tire manufacturer's guidance to determine safe operating limits.
@@TerraOutdoors thanks again for answering my second question about airing down winter tires! 😎
@@Raz_Peach For sure!
Be glad you didn’t get the RLD! I have one on my Colorado. Not a bad canopy; however, they really don’t “exist” anymore. So, no more support if something happens.
Oh, dang, that sucks! I thought they were a relatively new company? I had my eye on those as well, but ultimately decided to go with the RSI for various reasons. No regrets!
Thanks for this! Much easier way than what I was planning. Parts ordered.
For sure! Happy it helped!
Does your gullwing door open without hitting when the tent is open? Seems like it would!
It does (did). No issues! I actually have a new tent and awning setup now, and there are no issues with that one either.
Free usage of spring compressors are available from your local car parts shop. You could have had that job done before the rain came in.
I've used those before on other jobs (both successfully and unsuccessfully) and speaking from that experience, there is a 0% chance that those types of compressors would have been effective on these. Those struggle with light duty spring jobs: these springs were too tall, and far, far too stiff.
For me this say this is your last video 9 months ago. 11-19-23
Yup, that's correct. Sorry for the irregular content schedule. Unfortunately, between a family, full-time job+, and two concurrent graduate degree programs, I haven't had nearly enough free time to make videos (or even get out and camp...) on a regular basis. I've been trying to carve out more time for a while now, as I really do enjoy putting these videos together for you guys. I'm hoping to put together a couple of snow camping/wheeling videos this winter and a build update in the near future. Fingers crossed, I can start working on those within the next month or two. Thanks for checking out the content!
@@TerraOutdoors Totally understandable. Enjoy life and get things done you you and yours!. However, if you ever get a chance to post a walk around or some pics showing how the lift looks it would be awesome. I am at the stage where I am making my decisions and your rig and such is very close to what I have and what I plan with my red Rubicon.. It would be a perfect example so would love to see the result a little better.
@johngeers4023 Appreciate it! I really do need to do that. I've had a great experience with the lift thus far. The ride and aesthetics are top tier, in my opinion. There are a couple of creaks and clunks here and there, but nothing abnormal (to my lnowledge). I've also since moved up to 37s (from the 35s in the video). I plan on putting together a brief impressions video of that change as well. Hope you have an excellent New Year!

Hi, how did you connect the jetboil to the gas bottle? Thanks.
Hi there! The Jetboil comes with a fuel regulator. You hook that to the Jetboil, and then attach a standard propane hose between the tank and the fuel regulator. No special equipment required!
I love how the cap looked. It's the perfect cap for the JT. I wanted one for my JT too. Your truck looks good bro.
Thanks man! Certainly no regrets. I think it's the best all-around cap out there. The only thing I'd improve are the latches. They're sturdy, and have great action to them, but they suck (get stuck/jammed) in the cold.
The video section to watch begins at ~9:20 -> 10:40. At that point, the view is forward looking. Top perspective from the rear of the canopy. The Jeep roof is in front (towards the visible roadway). At the time frame, the fellow's hand is touching the roof top vent. The underside, rear edge appears to me to show the ventilation slot. As you watch the video it certainly appears as if the underside edge of the rear of that structure is the ventilation section. The fellow slips his fingers within and describes some sort of breathable 'fabric' filtration within. He surmises it keeps dust and junk out of working it's way into the canopy. Comments it somehow keeps rain out as well, though he has not yet figured out how that works. As I look at it, that position of the vent does not make sense to pressurize the inside of the canopy? 🤔 That would require "laminar airflow"; which requires one hell of a speed of movement. Especially considering neither the 'vent' nor the canopy roof are not aerofoil shaped. Warp factor 6, I guess???? Helluva Jeep for that!!! Unless the front side has the same ventilation with some form of mechanical, 'wind pressure' activated movable flap which would seal the rearward edge vent to exclusively permit the canopy 'pressurization' effect while driving? That would be pretty impressive to design. 🤔 Has me wondering. Would be good to see a closer view... Unless, of course, the fellow misassembled the roof top orienting it backwards? 🤔 If the vent is supposed to be located close to the Jeep's roof; instead of toward the rear of the canopy? Hmmmm... That seems to be more likely. I cannot imagine the canopy manufacturer being that proficient at engineering a complicated roof top ventilation system????
I'm not sure if there's a specific question wrapped up in here to be addressed! There are some talking points though. I don't understand the vent, I just know what it was described as by the manufacturer. Unfortunately, I don't have the money to throw around to sacrifice the roof panel by pulling it apart in the name of science. 😅 I will say however that over 2 years later, it has yet to leak. In terms of the roof panel, it is installed correctly. You can also see that the position on the manufacturer's page matches mine.
Any issues with it leaking. I just saw a video and the guy was showing how all the nuts and bolts came loose and his cab was full of dust and leaked in the rain.
No issues at all. I'll get a little dust around the tailgate if I'm hitting dusty trails at high speed, but that's more the tailgate than it is the cap. I've never had water leakage. His seal is either damaged/not seated properly or he didn't retighten hardware after installation. I retightened after my first 500 miles or so and found a *lot* of loose nuts. Then I did it again after maybe 5,000 miles and found a couple. I checked again a couple of months ago, and they were all still tight, so I don't expect any more issues.
Can you hooked it up to a 11 pound propane tank?
As long as it's the standard LP hose, it should work just fine.
@@TerraOutdoors thank you 🤙

@avinashkav7258 75% extension, 1,000 pound capacity. Cargo Glide part number: CG1000-5842. It was advertised as being for the new Ford Ranger, but also said it would fit 5ft truck beds and it worked great. I'm unsure if Cargo Glide has released a Gladiator-specific version since I made my purchase, but I would still confidently recommend this part number if not.
@@TerraOutdoors thanks for being so helpful
@@avinashkav7258 All good! I'm here to help!
What size were the shocks? The 2.5 to 4.5 in?
The shock kit included with this particular lift is Falcon part number FAL-14-02-33-400-150. According to their website, they are for 2" - 3" of lift.
Just curious, does your smartcap whistle before you added your additional racks? Mine starts whistling around 60mph and continues to increase in sound as speed increases. if your did, did you do anything to mitigate it?
Not that I ever noticed. I don't think I had the SmartCap on for more than a week prior to adding the roof rack though. The rack arrived before the cap, if I recall correctly. Is it your pressure vent? You could check that out. If so, perhaps something like an adhesive moonroof wind deflector may help?
I like it
Same! It's been incredibly useful since install. Zero regrets.

Not sure if that's a question or a statement? The tires are 35s.
Look awesome with great functionality
Appreciate it!
