Perfection Elvis Presley is second to none just the man
I remember that 73 concert Aloha from Hawaii , I was a small boy in the suburbs of Liverpool and I saw a man with the voice of an Angel and 50 years and a stroke later he is still the greatest singer who ever lived.
Elvis Always picked songs that told a story and people as well as himself could connect to. He just had an uncanny sense that way, a rare gift!

It is a great song. My favorite parts are the first two choruses where Elvis powers into the lyrics with a fierce, quivering passion, filled with the desperation of a man feeling love slipping away from him like water through his fingers. "At Six o'clock, the baby will be crying," How often love has faded away into the humdrum everyday monotony of married life. How often has hard work and the struggle to build a life together ended up stealing away the passion of love? Elvis performs this song as if he had lived it. He sings it with the pleading emotional power of a man who knows that it is already too late.

Take Elvis’s physical attractiveness out of the equation and you are still left with a one in a bazillion vocal talent. But face it, many people are shallow and without the looks, he wouldn’t have been as a big of a star. Starting out as a young Rock n Roller in the 50s, looks mattered - but then they always do. Hell, I’m affected by that too!

@@danc3693 You are so right! People make a big deal that he didn't write his songs, never mind the fact that that's the Only thing he didn't do! He did everything else and did the original songs Better! He also produced his own recordings, which was Unheard of at that time!

Major difference in studio version: first chorus goes *"I've lost you though your body's still as kind/I've lost you on the journey but I can't remember..."*
Elvis sang the "regular" chorus *"I've lost you I can't reach you anymore/We ought to talk it over now..."* throughout this live version.
Allot of his songs seem to be better in his performances than on his records.

EP has a studio version of this song as well. And in that version, One of the lines is, “I’ve lost you yes I’ve lost you, please don’t tell me that it’s so. I’ve lost you on a journey but I can’t remember where or when. Oh no !” He doesn’t sing that in the live version but it is so emotional and so soulful when he adds that “oh no” Only Elvis could make those two words sound so important and meaningful.

This song was on “That’s the Way It Is”, yet another album that we brought home & put on the family stereo and proceeded to wear out. I don’t think we ever put it back in the sleeve! We did the same thing with the “Elvis From Memphis” album, too! I now own them both on Vinyl as well as CD, and I might still even have it on cassette tape, too! I love this music that Elvis recorded from 1968 - 1977.

I was LUCKY!.. enough to see him sing this, live... Sept 12, '70...the fourth concert he did, right after wrapping TTWII...in Vegas.. At that time...the song was still being played on the radio...as a hit!.. I can still remember driving in Miami, hearing it...and HOPING he would be singing it ..that night!.. for the concert.. That whole evening was one of the most wonderful memories I have...Pretty blonde date...and Elvis singing Live..!..with the same entire orchestra ...Just like you see in the video, here.. Same suit, as well!..

John I don't know if you've watched any of Elvis rehearsals. You can actually see how he puts together his songs. He tells the singer's what he wants and when to come in, he also mentions to his bands where he wants to hear the horns on what part. He tries different things until he gets what he wants on a song. They said when he was recording, sometimes they'd work all night on one song because he was so critical of himself! They sometimes couldn't hear a difference but he could! His orchestra conductor Joe was famous and worked with the best said Elvis had the best ear in music of anyone! He was amazed because he knew Elvis never had any training.

You are very astute! Elvis always sang songs according to the way his life was going. When he was happy and doing well emotionally his songs were upbeat. The year that he and Pricilla split it was more ballads like Hurt, separate ways, always on my mind etc. When he got with Linda it was a good mixture because he was happy again.
