The difference btween Anette's pop style limited vocals and Floor's powerhouse all around dynamic vocals is a Night and Day difference, Anette was a 'studio" performer ,but the true tell of an artists talents are in a Live performance

I'm glad that you found a suitable format to highlight all the relevant aspects, both in the studio recording and in the live performance. The analysis of the musical composition, as well as the lyrics, raises the bar for the professionalism of this reaction. I await with great interest your next contacts with Nightwish music, because I see that you recognize good quality. Thank you!

It was my first time seeing Floor with Nightwish, like it was for most people in the crowd and she got us all fell in love within seconds. I'm subscribed to over 200 reactor channels, and I will therefore offer an expert's rating of your channel. Perfect 10 out of 10. Your delivery style, format, and content are so far ahead of anyone else's (and there are a lot of really good reactors out there). Your approach, with studio followed by live, just blows even the best of the best right out of the water. Love hanging on every word. I hope you will continue to do more Nightwish. Can't wait to see your head explode when you get to Poet & The Pendulum and Greatest Show on Earth!

I agree on "The Poet and the Pendulum" from the first studio album with Anette in 2007 and the live rendition with Floor at Wembley (U.K.) 2015.
B@The MusicKingdom: In that song, composer and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen has buried his pain, which the forced dismissal of Tarja Turunen has left with him.
I am also curious about your analysis of the lyrics of other songs, like EverDream, She's my sin, etc. in which Tuomas expressed his affection for a woman, who I think might have been Tarja herself, although he had never been more than a good friend to her, since both met at school. Therefore, "Ghost Love-Score" rates an imaginary love affair, that never came true. Marcelo, whom Tarja met in 2000 and married in 2003, once said that Tuomas did not like him, because he was jealous of him. Indeed Marcelo was jealous, too and started to split Tarja from the band. At no time he let Tarnie unaccompanied to the band and all communications between the band and Tarja had to be done through him, which brought up new problems of course. Tuomas had always been a shy, introverted dreamer, who preferred to express his feelings in writing, while "macho man" Marcelo seemed the opposite of Tuomas, e.g. when, as manager of the undisputed star Tarja, and thus "the most important figure" in the whole troop, he repeatedly strutted down the red carpet in front of the band...Master Passion Greed, the song exlusively dedicated to Marcelo, is the most griefful and angry song, Tuomas ever wrote. Yet it had never been played live as the anger left...

Never underestimate the genius of Tuomas Holopainen, both musically and lyrically. You will find, as you continue your Nightwish journey, that while each song has a definite Nightwish flavor, they are all different and unique. I liked the setup of this reaction and review. I thought it added a great deal in depth and quality to the entire thing. I know it's a lot more work for you to do a long video like this, but the results were outstanding. I do hope that it isn't another five months until your next Nightwish journey because I will certainly be looking forward to it. My suggestion for the next songs to look a would be Ever Dream and Romanticide. They're kind of a set of bookends in their messages. And, in both, you would finally be getting a look at their bassist/male vocalist who is a force to be reckoned with in his own right. As for which version of Storytime I liked best. I like both of them but, yeh, I'll take the live version with Floor.

What a great review of one of my favorite Nightwish songs. It will not surprise you that I have a strong preference for the live version. I know this song was written for Anette and while I thin she was great on the Album, Floor brings more power and energy to the song. Floor also sings more than Anette, cause Anette couldn't sing the operatic bridge and the high belting in the end. BTW Tuomas (keyboards) is the composer and the poet who wrote this song and he said he felt like a million bucks after getting the chorus exactly how he wanted it.
I have seen Nightwish (including this song live a couple of times live) they are awesome.
I love how you take the time to research the song, the structure, the production the tempo and basically every aspect of a song. Your review added insight from new perspectives, therefor you have new subscriber.
I hope you will consider doing another Nightwish favorite either Romanticide or Song of Myself both from this Wacken 2013 concert. I think specially Romanticide will blow your mind as there is a second vocal.

An often-forgotten point about the lyrics is that they are written in the composers THIRD language (In Finland, Swedish is the official second language). I don't even have a third language let alone the ability to compose quality lyrics in it. Respect to Tuomas Holopainen for this!

      @littleraven28 Рік тому +7

Interesting, I had no idea Swedish was their official second language. I know Floor is fluent in Swedish as she lives there and Hannes (husband) is Swedish, she was struggling with Finnish though.
Tuomas was an exchange student, he lived a year in the US, I'm sure that's one of the reasons ( I suspect he reads a lot also) why his English vocabulary is more than average.
It's all contributing to the fact that he can spoil us with lyrics besides awesome music.

@@littleraven28Tuomas is a language virtuoso because most people even after 10 years of living in a foreign country, don’t master the new language half as good as he does. Marco too has excellent English for a non native English speaker. I do detect some accent when they are just talking (casually) but hear non when they are singing, same goes for Floor. Tarja on the other hand, beautiful voice but I couldn’t abide her heavy Finnish accent. I know it’s not polite to judge but when you’re a professional singer you should work on perfecting your pronunciation. I’m Dutch so I know that that’s a thing here. When Dutch people choose to sing in English, they get branded if their English in anything but perfect.

    • @Brummiemartin
      @Brummiemartin Рік тому +2

@littleraven28 About 10% of Finns have Swedish as their first language. Road signs etc are in both languages, and often, you will see things such as "Helsinki/Helsingfors" with "Helsingfors" being the Swedish word for Helsinki.

    • @littleraven28
      @littleraven28 Рік тому +4

@@irenehabes-quene2839 Yes Tuomas speaks English very well and I know that Marko's father was an English teacher, so he probably learned it at a young age at home. I do detect some faint accent on both but mostly in the rolling 'r'. Floor being Dutch I'm not surprised her English is good. Tarja - great voice but awful thick accent making whatever she sings incomprehensible. Hence the alternative lyrics on Wishmaster ( Hamster, a dentist, hard porn Steven Seagull etc 😂) Most Dutchies are good in English, I know, I live in Floorland now. Wel beetje accent maar goed.😁

I like this format, studio review/breakdown and then live reaction. I think it works for a band like Nightwish. Floor is my absolute favorite vocalist. Nightwishs's catalog is deep.. but of all their songs.. I'd recommend the "Poet and the Pendulum" for your next Nightwish review. That will make for a very long video.. but the fans will watch it. The live reaction part would of coarse need to be one performed with Floor at vocals.

Minor technical point. Floor is using head voice and not falsetto during the high passages. The two terms are often used interchangeably. But they’re actually two quite different techniques. Most really good singers don’t use falsetto very much due to its limitations. Floor has an impressive ability to seamlessly and effortlessly shift her placement between head, chest, and mixed voice as well as different musical styles. It’s pretty much her trademark as a vocalist And it’s that talent and carefully honed skillset, which requires dedication beyond having just talent, that sets her apart from roughly 99% of the vocalists out there. Her vocal fluidity is the thing most people notice immediately once they get past her natural charisma and stage presence. To put it in a nutshell, she’s the real deal. :-)

This 100 minute concert was toward the end of the tour, and most folks first acquaintance with her. You see the band members smiling during the concert as Floor had the crowd in the palm of her hand. I find Nightwish an interesting band for several reasons. The Studio/Live split is one of them. Toumas seems to keep both aspects in mind when composing. Because of the style they play with backing tracks that maintains the backbone, but they Play the backing tracks and with a combination of that and pad are able to increase the power during a live show. Some times it is subtle, but the ability to cover with that extra provides a consistent great show. You would see it on the days Floor was a bit under the weather as the choir background would be brought forward just enough so she could bring her energy down to what she could sustain. But that is true for all the players just more evident with vocals.
But so far you have just seen Floor singing back catalog and are in for a real treat when you get to the more recent compositions written with her in mind.

Hello again, Music Kingdom. Nightwish Army Phoenix subscriber back here for you. I'm very happy to see you return to analyzing and reacting to Nightwish. In my not-so-humble (IMNSHO) opinion, Floor Jansen is the greatest thing (except for Tuomas Holopainen) to ever happen to Nightwish. To hear the studio version, nicely sung by Annette Olzon, but without her singing the operatic middle section or the incredible end section of the song merely illustrates Floor's incredible talent. And yes, it is her vocals in combination with her mastery of stage presence and command of the audience. I really liked your rating system including your use of the EXPERT on musical composition... I could have just used an adjusted rating for the live performance. That said, this was a job, very well done. Thank you, sir.

As for the comparison between studio vs live version... I NEVER even thought of listening the studio version since I knew who was singing it and quite frankly expected it to be almost a waste of time... because we have the unparallel live consert versions around. Well on the studion version was still nice to hear for the orchestral parts which are more on the background in the live version.
So I did not like the fact the rating been given by the studio version... or at least would have liked to have the adjusted overall rating after the live version run through.
But this was amazing reaction video to see... one of the best. Waiting to see much more Nightwish (please: LIVE versions) reactions...

Thank you for yet another awesome video! I really like what you are doing! Im a music nerd myself and I really enjoy the analysis!
Now, what I really think is the coolest detail about these to performances is the fact that the choir bit in the studio version is mostly replaced by Floor in the live version.
Annette couldn’t do that even if her life depended on it, and that really shows us just how insanely good Floor really is.
She outshines a great vocalist like Annette woth ease becuase of her raw power and versatility.
Floors way of just floating through timbres is absolutely astonishing. She’s never flat or off key, I have rarely seen her strain and if she does its becuase she has gone way past of what is considered humanly possible.
I’ve seen clips from concerts she has fine where she has a severe case of stomach flue and still you can only detect a few minor signs of strain. Most people would be either in bed or in the can.
And yes, the best thing about Nightwish is their stage presence. Anyone who has gone to a Nightwish show can attest to the fact that they really go all in every night. You really feel like their playing for the fans and that they really want us fans to be happy. And you can also tell that they truly are happy to be there.
They’re constantly smiling, laughing, interacting with the crowd and that makes for a hell of a good time!
So if you ever got a chance to go to a show, don’t hesitate! Nothing can beat a Nightwish show!

Even in Nightwish universe, the Wacken 2013 is a totally legendary gig. Every song performed there is the best performance of that song ever, anywhere. It's pretty insane that every song performed there is better performance than the respective song on the studio album. And as tight as they play and perform, that hasn't been repeated this far.

For me, your reaction has been one of the most enjoyable - I appreciate your knowledge, insight, honesty and in particular your focus on (and inherent understanding of the) the musicality.

I LOVE this format! It's so cool to watch someone break down the original and dive into where the song started before watching the live version to see what it has become. Some of the nuances from the studio doesn't translate as well to live mixes and of course stage presence and the crisp sound of live instruments and vocals doesn't always translate well to studio. Of course it makes a huge difference that there is an entirely different singer with a different style. It means there's more to appreciate when they have different styles. Of course people will have preferences but it doesn't mean that you can't appreciate a different take. I just really love this approach.
I also have to commend you on not letting the more aggressive fans turn you off to the band. I have a huge amount of respect for you for that. Kudos!

Anette Olzon is often overlooked, especially when compare to Floor, but she is an amazing singer and this stuff is very hard to sing.
I usually suggest to wait for the NW epics until 3 or 4 songs in, but since you guys are smart, im gonna suggest The Poet and the Pendulum (2015 for the live) or The Greatest Show on Earth (Wembley) if youre ready to make a 40 minute video.

👍What a great review.I never liked the studio version of this song, the 2th and 3th voices of Annette sound like "Mickey Mouse" it sounds to me "they" put a high pitch shifter on that,it doesn't really sound naturally to me.I know! Annette is not a bad singer but, really,Floor fit's this style of music like a glove. With Floor it's just the instant vibe you get and hold your atention. It's like you said; you can learn some things but, some people just have this natural gift.🤘

Thank you for a yet another very good reaction and analysis, guys!
I do not reall if I have ever said that here, but when I first heard that Floor will be joining Nightwish my thought was: 'Yep. It's going to be amazing'. Because I was already familiar with her work with After Forever and ReVamp and of course I have been following Nightwish for many years and their struggle to find a fitting vocalist was real.
Btw I would like to chastise the person who commissioned a Mastodon review. Way to spoil a first reaction to them from this channel. Well, at least you didn't go for any of the later albums.
Btw2: are you guys recording the info about the band and song before or after the actual reacting and analyzing part? Because if so then I personally would be wary of this since it can build up certain expectations or misconceptions or even command your way of thinking about the track instead of forming your own opinion first. This it my 2 cents. Looking forward to more videos from you. And yeah, doing studio and live at least in the same video - definitely a step up. Makes me think that you are finally beginning to see the light :D And sorry for sounding so condescending.

Only discovered your channel tonight so I’m sorry if you’ve already done this, but please look into the story behind The Poet & The Pendulum by Nightwish then do a reaction vid to it. First time I heard it, I didn’t know any of the story behind it. I thought it was a bit weird (I like weird though) but I knew there was something more to the song that I just wasn’t getting. I kept being drawn back to listening to the song though (probably cuz I can relate to a lot of the lyrics due to being in a very dark place in the past). Once I looked into the real meaning behind the song, I was totally blown away. It’s truly a work of art. I now understand why they call Tuomas The Mozart of Metal. It’s such a deep, metaphorical, well written song & Floor just takes “amazing” to another level. I honestly can’t get enough of reaction vids to Pendulum. I love seeing people’s faces as they hear it for the first time. Every time I hear Pendulum, I notice another new detail I’d missed in the hundreds of times I’ve heard it before. You just got yourself a new subscriber from across the pond in Northern Ireland - but PLEASE react to The Poet & the Pendulum 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

With all respect for Anette, she can't compete with Floor. Anette is a studio and more poppy singer (and not good live), where Floor is a real live singer and fully trained in classical singing, opera and theatre AND finished the rockacademy. Everything Floor touches becomes gold instantly. Also te bandmembers are so freaking good live. I was lucky I saw them 6 times, and also was at the Wacken festival where this was recorded. The live version has so much more dynamics, the instruments sound better and yeah....you do not need a choir for the high parts with Floor. But it adds somethingvery special. Floor makes the vocal lines so much more interesting (not flat) and her range is extra ordinary (she can go so much higher than this)
Tuomas is such a great composer and you never know where the song wil bring you. He also works with the London Philarmonic Orchestra, writes the music for all instruments and choir. They use it as backtracks because it's undoable to get the whole orchstra on stage everytime they perform😂
You were really nice with giving Anette's vocals an 8. I think an 8,5 is just right for the studio version. IMO the live version deserves at least a nine out of ten.☺ Thank you sir

Excellent idea of doing studio version and then live version. If you can find it I recommend watching this entire show. I have it and I have not found a single mistake or mis-queue through the 2 hours and 15 minutes. Emmpu does not break a string, Marko's voice never cracks or goes off key, Tuomas never hits the wrong key and all pyrotechnics fire correctly. It was technically a perfect show. I see the General of the Nightwish Army has dropped by. Gabriel, upload your list to him so that he has some choices. If you get around to doing it, I would recommend "The Poet and the Pendulum", BUT, you must research the letters from the band to the first singer, Tarja and then her response and then understand that the song was written from Tuomas's point of view. Do the Official version live at Wembley Arena in 2015. Also if you want to make John work his butt off, also review "Greatest Show on Earth" Live at Tampere in 2015. The song is only 24 minutes and change.

@frankk1pro484 It would be really nice if you had done a bit more research before you post such silly "facts". This isn't by far Floor's first appearance with Nightwish.
Floor joined Nightwish on Oct., the 1st of 2012 for the show in Seattle, performed on the rest of the North American leg of their tour, then they went to South America, and Australia / New Zealand. They had a 4 month touring break from mid January to mid May, toured Japan for three dates and played the European festival season in the summer of 2013. All in all, Wacken was the 46th show (if I counted correctly) for Floor with the band.
But, this is still pretty darn impressive, what great chemistry they had developed in such a short time. Not many bands have that tightness, even after a lifetime of touring...

The song describes the main character of the film.
Studio and live are very different for Anette. Live she gives the songs a jazz touch that doesn't work. The consequence can be seen in the number of clicks on UA-cam, which are very few for her live recordings. They disappear between the live recordings of Floor and Tarja. Nevertheless, after her dismissal, Anette publicly asked who should sing Storytime now (because she did it so uniquely). The Wacken video provides the answer.
Tuomas often writes rollercoasters that suddenly change direction. This usually takes more than 3 minutes and is beyond radio capability.
After Tarja, Tuomas probably wanted to develop the music with Anette in the direction of Within Temptation, the other co-founder of symphonic metal. But he had robbed Nightwish of the soul and corrected that again with Floor:
Within Temptation - Bleed Out (official music video)
Ghost Love Score is one of the "big three songs". “The Poet and the Pentulum” and “The Greatest Show on Earth” increase this even further, also in length. On the current record, "All the Works of Nature Which Adorne the World" is a 30 minute orchestral piece that is divided into 8 tracks and has never been performed live. They used the last track on the tour as the end song during the bow and Floor then sang again.
Floor's father says about her first appearance that he saw a completely different daughter there. The stage Floor and the private Floor seem to be two different people. In the photo this one
Event you can already see a Floor that is under tension from top to toe. Even back then she sang with her whole body.

I understand, from a composers standpoint, why you would want to do the studio version. But Nightwish really shines live. Floor really shines live. She's a natural empath, so she soaks up the crowd's energy like a capacitor, then discharges it in the best way possible. There's an energy being transmitted there that a studio can't do. And Floor Jansen is the only floor that's never flat. She's so good that it is somewhat effortless for her, and that allows her to concentrate on the crowd, and the interactions. And She had only been with the band about 9 months at this point. Some folks in the crowd, this was the first time they ever saw her, or heard her. Digest that for a second. She was still that good. She's a Valkyrie.

As for their live performances, they do use an orchestral backing track as it’s quite difficult to tour with a full orchestra, but they are absolutely playing live. There’s a click track that Jukka (the drummer) is playing to and Tuomas (keyboard) triggers and controls the recorded orchestral tracks and plays individual keyboard instruments on top of it. It’s quite a technical show and they do it so damn well.

I really enjoy your reactions and analysis! I reckon you are ready for the - in my opinion - greatest Nightwish song: Poet And The Pendulum. It is really important to read the backstory for this song as it makes it so much more emotional. It's about how Tuomas - the composer - felt after the band had fired their first lead singer - Tarja. It's deep and deeply emotional song. Again Floors live version - this time from Wembley 2015 - is in my opinion the best rendition of the song, but the studio version is the one I fell in love with. Can't wait to hear you tackle that beast.

Very nice reaction and analysis man! I have a little advice for you. I see that you don't have enough time to do reaction videos regularly. So I guess you won't go on a full Nightwish journey as many channels do. In my opinion the best way to continue is with the 2 masterpieces of Nightwish.
    'The poet and the pendulum'
'The greatest show on earth' both live from Wembley (no studio version is needed, believe me). We are not talking about great songs. As I said before they are masterpieces. Maybe in the top ten of modern music. In the same category with 'Bohemian rapsody' or 'Stairway to heaven'. If you choose to do this, you may find it helpful to read one or two things about those two compositions.

Hearing the album version for the first time, I'm surprised how delicate and child-like Annette's performance sounds. I really prefer Floor's interpretation and the live performance, too.
The band itself deserves praise. When Kai took over as drummer, he said it took two hours to transcribe Jukka's drum parts so he could reproduce them correctly.
Also, I wonder if the line "The core of all life is a limitless chest of tales" is a call back to the earlier song "Dark Chest Of Wonder"?
