  • I will be doing a monthly video on games that have been somewhat forgotten. What better way to start this off than with the Laserdisc game titled Freedom Fighter (1987).

Here in Latinamerica, Galaxy Express 999 enjoyed some brief emission during the 80's and was fairly popular, yet it was now actually forgotten; the OVA's and Movies were actually transmited on TV. This game actually I didn't know about it, thanks pal! I should search the Galaxy Express 999 movies and give a new review as an adult, the themes and the lore of the series are actually one of the best.

Dragon slayer was epic, but like you said it was a quarter making monster. They hit big with that one.

Aladdin's Castle at Northeast Mall in Hurst, TX. Must've been late '80s or early '90s. Loved playing this one! The train sequence was as far as I got, too, and the baseball sequence was my favorite. One quote I kinda remember was, "With this you can shoot the eyes off a cockroach," as the old guy hands you the gun. Glad to know this game wasn't completely forgotten! Thanks for the post!

I played this game in a Malibu Grand Prix in Columbus Ohio in 1994 and have been thinking about it ever since. Couldn’t remember the name or even much of the game since it was darn near impossible to play. Thanks for doing a show on it, the 30 year mystery has been solved!

That’s all I could ever remember about the game as well. Never seen a game like it before, that’s why it stuck in my head all these years.

Yeah, this game was insanely hard! I was able to play this back at Aladdin's Castle, NE Mall in Hurst, TX! And boy does this footage really take me back in time! Thanks for sharing.

Dang I've been trying to find this game for years. I'm 49 by the way (in 2024). A buddy of mine at the time LOVED this game, the style of it. I still remember the "you belong at a baseball game!" section. Definitely not a great game by any means, but you know about nostalgia.

Glad you found it. I had not played that game for the longest time before I was able to find an image of the laserdisc and a specificically made emulator to run it. Thanks for watching!

I found your vid because I was having nostalgia about this game I only played once. I was on Christmas vacation in Florida, and it was at the Malibu Grand Prix, though I don't remember which location. We may have played the same machine! that is amazing!

I played this Arcade game at "Malibu Grand Prix" in Dallas Texas back in the late 80's,... It was so screwed up butt I attempted to play it anyways..... I love Japanimation.

This is really fascinating as I’d never heard of this one! I was eventually able to beat Space Ace (on ace setting) as well as Dragon’s Lair when I was 10-11 at our local arcade but never beat Cliff Hanger or Super Don Quixote or Thayer’s Quest.

While I'm waiting for dinner to finish cooking and before I go back into Starfield...let me see the games time forgot. As a gamer that started back in 1986 with the Nes and Master System let's see what you got.
Addendum- I had a Malibu Grand Prix close to my home that I used to go to all the time. Mine had a building for brand new cutting edge games that was next to the small go-kart race track (there was 2) and a 3 story castle filled wall-to-wall with arcade cabs. It was the very first time I saw Freedom Fighter and it was incredible. My favorite cab back then was Stun Runner and anything Sega did. I really started getting into the arcade scene in the early 1990's with Street Fighter II and SNK! Good times!

Nice! Malibu was awesome! the current generation may have online gaming and all the fancy hardware, but there was something about the arcade scene that was just a great social experience.
      Thanks for watching!

Let me tell you...I love my current gaming. The Xbox Series X is sweet, the PS5 is super tight, and the Switch isn't bad. However, nothing touches the experience, sights, and sounds a full sized arcade brings. Being completely immersed in the moment. Good friends, incredible games, being surrounded by gamers, cheap pizza, smoke filled rooms, and people shouting "I got downs!" While slapping a quarter on a cab...there is nothing like it in the world. We had the coolest subculture around and for a time it seemed like it would never end. I miss it....

Where did you hear about a planned Sega CD port? That's not something I've heard before. This is probably the best dedicated video on the game I've seen so far, although I really wish someone would actually deep dive into the history of the game's production, the people behind it and all that. I've researched the game enough to where I probably could do that myself but that'd obviously take a ton of work to edit and I don't really feel comfortable doing the voice over myself.
The fan Singe recreation I feel is lacking and doesn't really represent the arcade game that great, the lack of branching paths or the screen panning does take away from it along with the poor re-construction of the video (the disc is formatted in such a way that allows the game hardware to seamlessly switch scenes but you can't just view it on its own without editing the pieces together). And to clarify, the arcade game's ROMs are dumped (both the Star Rider hardware-based prototype and dedicated custom hardware versions) and there's an old M2V rip of the laserdisc, but you can not currently emulate it at all. It'd really be beneficial if the disc was properly preserved using the Domesday86 Project, I'm not sure if that's been done or not.
Btw, as far as the two films go, if you liked Freedom Fighter I'm sure you get something out of them. They're both really good, especially the first one, and they're easily available on Blu-Ray from Discotek.
