1:18 the reason Sega partnered with TecToy was because of insane import tariffs in Brazil. The MS would be unaffordable if it came from Japan. So, they built them in-country under licence to get around this. Similar arrangements exist today, for instance doing part assembly in the US and then final assembly under licence inside China for domestic sales.
I was about to post this. The video is completely missing any mention of the unique and bizarre market situation in Brazil that still continues to this day.
Sega will always be in the hearts of every retro gamer in the world, Sega forever fan since 1986, i will never forget the old classic Japanese Sega company, i believe that the Sega Mark 3, Master System 1,2 will never die ❤
Yeah, same here, if you don't count the Commodore Vic-20 as a "console". While I know that the Sega Master System was nowhere near as popular in Canada as it was in Brazil, I think the Master System was a bit more popular in Canada than in the United States on a per capita basis. This is just anecdotal but there was a good two to three years up to about 1990 when most video rental stores in my area (just west of Montreal) stocked Sega Master System games in addition to NES games and even a few TurboGrafx-16 games. Obviously, once the Sega Genesis gained steam, the rental stores liquidated their Master System game selection.
@@Jokerwolf666 It's possible but I think the Power Base Converter was always going to be a niche item considering that many of us who already had a Sega Master Sytem weren't going to spend extra money just to be able to play Master System games on the Genesis when the Sega Master System we already owned still worked fine (I was too young to care that much about saving space) while many people who never had a Master System but who wanted a Genesis for its 16-bit graphical power weren't that interested in being able to play 8-bit games on it.
Argentinian here. Nobody knew the Master System back then. In fact, kids argued about “Family vs Sega” (Genesis) ignoring that they were from different gens. And also, ignoring that the SNES existed. Then PSX came, and nothing else mattered.
That's not true at all, it was pretty well known and sold in major retail stores like "Garbarino", quite a few years before the family games flooded the market. It didn't sell a lot because it was expensive compared to the then popular home computers, with the C64 taking the throne.
haha, basically the same situation was in Russia, Famiclones (Dendy) vs Megadrives (original and clones) vs 3DO/later PS1 Master Systems were uncommon for some reasons: 1) they were available for the unholy prices in 1990-1991 (5000 of them were imported from Brazil) 2) you can import it, usually from ex-East Germany (most consoles on the second market got there this way) but this wasn't for everyone too 3) or you can buy it officially as late as 1994 (too late, huh?) And SNES was just as expensive as 3DO/PS1 but only as good as Megadrive, so there was no proper market for it
I don't think nostalgia is the only motive for the Brazilian 8-bit ongoing market. Brazil has very high taxes on imported gaming consoles (Xbox, PS, and Switch), which makes the market more creative and accepting of the old classic gaming consoles.

I would say more like: eh 🤷♂️ One thing that certainly made the TecToy consoles sell is just being cheaper and more available than other options. In the 80s, technology imports were HEAVILY regulated, in the 90s and going forward it just was expensive.
I think because due to protectionist laws there, electronics are super expensive unless manufactured there. The master system was manufactured in Brazil, making it cheaper to own. But I might be wrong.

I"m Brazilian and in my late 40's so I play this game brand new (when they were actually new), and I can say I'm appalled how come no one plays master system clones in the rest of the world?!?!?! HEHEHE Seriously though, it's amazing how many clones of the systems I play as a child I can still find here! Even in the Raspberry Pi people install master system and mega drive emulators.
Man, sometimes I kinda miss the wood veneer TV (singular) we had back in the 70s. The high pitch whine from CRTs were especially bad with that one. Then, in 1980 we got another wood veneer TV (a Grundig!) only this one had a REMOTE! And not as bad a whine. The remote looked like a Jaguar controller and was about the same size as the TV for all the two channels we had available for our viewing pleasure.
I don't know if it's of use with PAL-M (maybe), but we've found that VCR/DVD combo units from the 2000s are excellent at being A/V hubs because they often convert between PAL and NTSC, allowing you to run NTSC stuff on a PAL television. (We often use it with cheap Chinese clone consoles.) Haven't tried it with PAL-M and SECAM but it's worth a punt.

Funnily enough I don't remember ever seeing a Master System here in Argentina, I legit believed that the Genesis was the first Sega console back when I was a kid, only learning about the SMS being a thing in the early 00's when I got into emulation. So hearing that TecToy actually sold the SMS here is news to me.
I got really frustrated with the image and sound quality from this "new" MS evolution console. Tec Toy could have included a HDMI output. Also, the plastic used to assemble the console is really cheap. Honestly, a PC emulator would be a better alternative.
Still have my original SMS with Snail Maze as the game on the system ROM. Sometimes I feel like the only American that grew up with the SMS and not the NES.
Even tho Tec Toy sold some Master System here in Argentina, it didn't catch on. Back in the 90s the Argentine economy was more open to imports so we had a lot of Famicom Clones coming from Taiwan. In Brazil imports are really expensive and is cheaper to manufacture stuff in the country so that is why Sega partnered with Tec Toy and probably why famicom/NES clones were not that popular there.
Up and comers can learn basic programming on these even if the skills no longer translate as well to modern hardware. It’s nice seeing older consoles still getting new releases.

You're probably right. Our mish-mash power grid mads we adapt to both voltages really fast. Even non-switching power supplies tend to have a switch (no pun intended) to change the transformer coil ratio to both 110 and 220, or 127 and 240 per our standard.
We only have 230V where I live, but practically ALL appliances are rated 90-240V. So thay gives absolutely NO indication of what the actual supply in Brazil is.
@@AutieTortie 127 or 220V nominal, always at 60 Hz.
I'd take a RAID ad over a hero wars ad.
I'm personally fond of the Huusk knife ads. 😂
I'd take chlamydia over hero wars
Glad to see your recent flurry of videos. You add the uk-quirky dimension to the mostly us-based retro gaming scene and I'm grateful for that!
7:03 reminded me that I’m still young enough to hear those ultra high frequencies, even if it is like scratching a chalkboard.
Or maybe I’m just going crazy and developing auditory hallucinations.
Oh, the memories of being given an ancient, second-hand Master System II when I was a child came flooding back! Alex Kidd - I remember that so well, right down to the soundtrack... I have a vague memory of reading something about just how big this thing was in Brazil, but I did not know that they're still knocking them out to this day.
I still lol at TecToy's WordArt logo
You know things aren't going good for a UA-camr when they are forced to accept mobile game sponsorships. Especially Pay to Win games. Ones that Nostaliga Nerds HAS to know prey on people who are addicted to spending money on mobile games and they prey on that very real addiction. Disgusting.
It's a shame because the video content is always good, but I can do without the bottom of the barrel sponsors and vague clickbait titles. I really need to get around to installing the browser plugin that fixes that.
It was a matter of 4 taps on mobile to skip the ad...
Broadcast media accept sponsorship from payday loan companies, gambling websites and the alcohol industry. Let's have a bit of perspective, eh?
@@carlkamuti Indeed. ITV are probably the worst, even lending their own IPs to gambling companies. Ant & Dec slots, anyone? Have fun, kids.
@@joneggelton Ant & Dec slots LOL that sounds so wrong.
The comments here are so sad. That was the best ad I've ever seen and it has turned me into a Hero Wars addict.
Best game ever, i hope they port it to the Master System soon.
Nostalgia Nerd basically doesn't upload for two years and now he's suddenly uploading every day. What is happening???
Making up for lost ground?...
And what happy days they are 🎉❤
Held to ransom by the makers of Hero Wars.
Hearing "ATGames" makes me shiver. Had two of their emulation boxes years ago, absolutely dreadful.
from what i understand it might not actually be made by atgames. i've seen bootleg gennys use the same hardware that atgames used in their systems so i presume tectoy and atgames are both getting them from the same supplier
Used to have a terrible ATGames Genesis plug-and-play as a kid, emulation was better than that shit
@@matcha6710 It *is* emulation, just incredibly poor emulation. Mainly the sound. The controllers mine came with weren't *too* terrible, and it looks nice, but that's where the positives stop lol
There is a HD Video Converter that works with this aka "AV2HDMI UP Scaler 1080p" ...
i imagine one of those cheap scart to hdmi adapters that just takes a composite signal will also work then since i believe its the same tech but with a scart port instead
@@CrashFan03The hiccup is going to be getting one with PAL-M support. That's an odd duck, and (as demonstrated) difficult to find support for on devices sold outside Brazil.
Love the outro-rage 😂
I forgot how bloody difficult Shadow Dancer was (still a great game though)
My favorite hipster gamer on UA-cam. Good stuff!
We truly need more modern Master System clones!
Even if by a technicality.
The master system is the longest produced system ever made that still gets new commercial releases.
I believe that would be the Atari 2600. Atari created a new 2600 and new games for it this year. That's a lifespan of 44 years.
Did many Brazilians liked the Master System so much? Gosh that was a Loyal Following!
yes we do
I would say more like: eh 🤷♂️
One thing that certainly made the TecToy consoles sell is just being cheaper and more available than other options. In the 80s, technology imports were HEAVILY regulated, in the 90s and going forward it just was expensive.
I think because due to protectionist laws there, electronics are super expensive unless manufactured there. The master system was manufactured in Brazil, making it cheaper to own. But I might be wrong.
@@evefavretto wait... so acessible things become popular and beloved? 🤯🤯🤯🤯
not only that , till 2008 Dos gaming was strong in Brazil...
I love how the "Most Replayed" part is skipping the ad. It usually is on these types of videos.
Up to a certain point.
20-odd games in the SMS library won't die.
Am I the only person that hear him saying MARTA system?
At least you seem to be showing actual Hero Wars game play, something they seem to be unwilling to do.
Never saw a Sega console when I was a kid.
At least here, in Chile, it was Nintendo and Snes everywhere in the 90s until the PS1 appeared on the stores in 1995.
Hope things are going well for you nn, always enjoyed your content brother.
I'm a looong time subscriber and also brazilian. I appreciate the coverage of such very brazilian topic, but not only some translations are a bit wrong, the accent of your stiff robot is anything but brazilian. That's european portuguese which sounds quite alien to us. I wish you've put some more effort into that. Google Translate does make this distinction quite well by the way. Nevertheless I'm glad that your channel is somewhat being revived as of late. Keep up.
I'm also Brazilian and Portuguese from Portugal definitely does NOT sound alien to me. The comparison I make is always UK English vs USA English. It's the same language but some words are different and the pronunciation is different. I have traveled to Portugal and had ZERO issues in communicating with people in Portuguese.
Dude! Dont make me play Hero Wars... but... the singing... the SINGING!!!! :P
OH WOW!!! A MASTER SYSTEM! ONE SYSTEM TO RULE THEM ALL! IM TOSSING OUT MY PLAYSTATION 5 AND GETTING A MASTER SYSTEM TODAY!
Understandably. I bought a PolyStation 5 at a flea market the other day, and it's no different from a Nintendo. I don't know how Soni gets away with it.
My first console was, actually the SMS II--rocked that until the PSOne, then the PS2, and then PC gaming took over. My SMS II came with Sonic The Hedgehog 2--but have fond memories of RoboCop versus Terminator, R-Type, and Outrun.
Two Germans brothers in Brazil... Don't ask about how their family got there... loll
Paraguay says hi.
in the 19th century, DW Abt it.
Nice vid, interesting history on the SMS, i Still have a Working orig SMS myself. it's the one with Penguin Land built in.
Fantastic review!
Even in the Raspberry Pi people install master system and mega drive emulators.
be cool to see some of the exclusive tec toy games for the mega drive like the sims 2 and need for speed ports they did
Long live the z80!
History's Greatest Console.... and Marta too. Marvellous!
At least I know what the Master System is. I'm confused by this odd accessory called Marta.
@@coyoteartist She's great!
@@WhatHoSnorkers Well that's the important thing. I'd just not seen her before.
@@coyoteartist Yeah, she is nice. Used to do a lot of streaming on Twitch!

North American here. I first played a master system in 1988. It's 2024, and I'm getting ready to walk in the house from a long days work and play me some outrun!
Brazillian mom: You're not getting a PS5. Instead, you're going to be gaming in the reagan years.
Her child: How do you even know about American politics?
Mom: It's not important. Enjoy your sega or enjoy no games.
Is it possible to order any of these outside of Brazil? I wouldn't mind adding more to my Sega collection.
I don't think so, sadly
I've currently got mine on my eBay shop. Link in description ;)
I dont think so because most marketplaces dont even allow you to put a non-brazillian address.
But I bet you can find someone to redirect it to you.
@@arturpaivadsIf there is any being sold by Tectoy, they usually ship to other countries.
5:34 I knew I'd heard that before but I was going crazy trying to figure it out. Thanks lol
A most likely terrible mobile game that has a silly song? It was catchy enough for me to watch through (but I'll never touch it)
This reminds me of that one post that supposed a future where Sega just kept adding on addons to the Genesis instead of making a new console.
Can this thing be modded to accept cartridges/external roms? For the good ones left out.
One of my all time favorites. I just recently had mine modded with a RGB bypass and FM sound output.
Phantasy Star? R-Type? I guess the former needs a battery backup so never mind.
That AD is great 😂 I want one of these!!
Does it have Somari?
Nostalgia Nerd went full "Hero Wars"
I honestly thought to begin with he was just taking the p*** - until it came back again.
Over here in the states, we I had the NES, but my older cousin had the Master System. I loved the Master System.
In the US, the Master System was distributed by Tonka. They really had no idea what to do with a video game system, so it languished.
Heck, TecToy is now "manufacturing" (i.e. building from chinese components to get tax breaks) credit card machines.
Cheers for communicating this part of the southamerican videogame history 👍🏼
didnt tectoy also make the genesis portable consoles with an sd card port? I think I have one somewhere.
10:07 I will just assume that you will return to this somewhere at the end of the video as well and not watch the rest, I suppose. Christ.
Man i was enjoying the video, then that hero wars garbage came up.
NTSC isn't 30fps, it's 60hz interlaced and since the consoles from that era were 240p the result is a 60fps result .
Funnily enough I don't remember ever seeing a Master System here in Argentina, I legit believed that the Genesis was the first Sega console back when I was a kid, only learning about the SMS being a thing in the early 00's when I got into emulation. So hearing that TecToy actually sold the SMS here is news to me.
what about an OSSC or FrameMeister?
the retrotink 5x is better
I owned a super compact at time. The idea os playing wirelessly was nice
I got really frustrated with the image and sound quality from this "new" MS evolution console. Tec Toy could have included a HDMI output. Also, the plastic used to assemble the console is really cheap. Honestly, a PC emulator would be a better alternative.
Just watched this whilst working form home.. Great video still have a master system PAL version sadly without the FM chip.
While its technically Sega hardware, they were doing *none* of the heavy lifting. It was all TecToy flexing.
fun fact: Tec Toy still releases games for sega and are capable of making a sega video game and even revive canceled sega video games.
Still have my original SMS with Snail Maze as the game on the system ROM. Sometimes I feel like the only American that grew up with the SMS and not the NES.
Martyr system??
Here in Argentina I never heard of anyone having a Master System. The local market was flooded with famiclones and later Mega Drive clones.
