I believe learning different strumming patterns is what most all people have difficulty with...especially beginners....and Intermediate players
Hey Ed. You're right. I get more questions about strumming than anything else. It's definitely a challenge in the beginning. That's why I feel if you can pick up the 3 patterns I teach that are super easy and get some songs under your belt with those, then you will begin to get the feel for strumming in general.

In this video I learnt many stuff. The most interesting is that we should strum DOWN on the beats and UP in between beats.

Hi excellent video, thanks. Can you determine a/the strumming pattern for a song from the music notation on the song sheet? eg if you had a measure with one quarter note followed by 6 eighth notes, would the strumming pattern not be: D DU DU DU? Or am I being to simplistic?

Wow, that was a quick answer! Many thanks. There was a lot of info in that 19 minutes. I'll admit, I've didn't get the second example as 3 beat. I thought it was 2 beat pattern :-( I'll work on that. I found your discussion on using variations of chords at the end interesting, as I often use B7 over the Bsus from you chord chard. Moving from E to B7 was something I learned early, so it's in my comfort zone. Of course, moving out of your comfort zone is where you learn :-)

Just FYI, you won't find a 2 beat pattern song (that would just be a 4 beat pattern cut in half). When trying to decipher, start with trying a 4 beat, then 3 beat, then you can try 8 or 6 (which are related to 4 and 3 as they are just double). But even if there were a 2 beat pattern, try to fit 2 beats into that song in the lesson. It won't fit with the beats evenly spaced. That's going to be your deciding factor. The beats need to be evenly spaced.
Yea, B7 works great for this song, and similar country folk type songs, like "Will The Circle Be Unbroken".

The B7 is so difficult to do, and to deaden the 6th string while using it, I can't get my thumb over the neck to reach it. So how can I deaden it?

Huh... I've always figured out strumming patterns on my own; i've never really followed the the strumming pattern guide to any song. Though I have tried plenty of times to follow accordingly, it just makes it SIGNIFICANTLY more difficult, i feel. I always just practise until it starts to feel and sound natural.
Does anyone feel the same way? Any tips for learning to how become better at following tabs, sheet music and instructional music?

I have never looked for a strum pattern to a song....If I want to learn a new song, I listen to Melody Line and Tempo and adapt that to my own unique strum..It works 98% of the time...Like you say,"There's no one way to play a song."......

The second song sounds 4 beat to me.
2nd one still sounded like a four beat song.
tips: when the beat is slower, it usually sounds like a 3 beat
To me it sounded like a 4 beat song with a triplet feel, but I could be wrong.

Way confusing
Just knowing the beat or time of the song does not give you the strumming pattern, because there many variations to it. Me know a song is in 4/4 (wow most western songs are ), is not going to help! Me knowing its 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & is not going to help. Why? I can come up with (D= Down U = UP) DU DU DU D or D D U U DUDU sure its as strum pattern but it is not the right one. Its the right one that matters not my interpretation. Its idiotic if we have to guess the strum pattern by spending hours listening to the song . Why not go the whole hog and guess the chords as well after all there are many variations and the artist does not know :). Its stuff like this which give musicians a bad name. "Oh i know the strum pattern and i can figure it but i not telling." In my view when i see a song with no strumming pattern i just walk away, I have not enough time to reinvent the wheel. Its just plain arrogance of musicians when they do not put the pattern for their song on there. Some guy was selling his stuff i said where is the strum pattern ? Ans: find it yourself i said bye and he lost a sale. Oasis adds strumming patterns in there song books. Basically musicians need to get their heads out of their arses and start being more open, if not remain smug and poor.
Sometimes there isn't a set strum pattern. Playing music is more about the feel and the groove than about strum patterns. If you ask a musician what strum pattern they are playing they probably won't be able to tell you because they honestly don't know. They aren't thinking about strum patterns they are simply playing.
Universal Music Group don't want you to know the strum pattern, chords, tabs, for a song that don't exist since 70's. Because - who the fuck know they have their "money" reason and no one should know about it.
Most do not know line - is just talking crap. Yes they would because they have learnt it and teach it to the rest of the group, ie the original artist would know or have some idea how to do it. You need a foundation to build up on, ie one teaches a child to walk not run. Now the ones who cannot communicate it must be especially dense no wonder they are not a success. i think its an excuse to make money, as people who want a strumming pattern or how to do it never show it. Its the old question do not let the plebs know and keep music mysterious. That is now the English lost their folk music, but its coming back now etc. Well they did this with reading and writing now look at how that has worked out. Lol even the plebs can learn to do it and get degrees. its just a sign of elitism . Lol and behold give people the know how to sing and play musical instruments, they can. Lol and behold give people a chance to make programs and put them out there and THEY CAN DO IT. UA-cam etc. Did you know most people can learn to sing if only people would teach, if your not tone deaf its possible to do so, same with any instrument. I watch videos on this kind of stuff, and they say well listen to the song, sure you can get up some kind of strumming pattern, but i am not interested in making my own up., I am not interested in a generic lesson how how to strum, but how to find a strum pattern listening to a song. ie this for example ua-cam.com/video/z4ZipKdI1sY/v-deo.html. However the guy goes on about how to find out strumming patterns by knowing a few oops ie the folk pattern. The point here is not having to learn some, to do some but not knowing how to do it in the first place leaves the person at a lose and then the musician acts like he is Einstein and gets a punch on the nose for his efforts. It just leads tor frustration when people talking in jargon for no effect.

Mulberry2000, I totally agree with you. Also, getting those "musicians" to teach us how to write strumming patterns for songs/tabs that don't have any is like pulling teeth.
This video is terrible, you should of started with just the guitar instead of pushing your own music. Also the music is too loud, so you got four things goinng on. Listening to the music , listening to you ,watching the beats of your hand and dealing with the noise the music makes. The beats did not match the music and we have only your word on it. You should of counted the beats out instead of making it hard for people to do the above. The video overwhelms people.
@Keiliany Sanchez-Medina I do not give a toss when it was done. If put stuff online u get people commentating. If he or you do not like it then do not put on stuff u tube. The lesson is poor and it does not solve what he is trying to. Criticism is the key here and we learn from it, now if you do not like criticism then you will not learn. I said the same 2 years ago and it is not changed one bit.
