Great video!! This really portrays how marketing makes a difference in movie industry… there’s something else with imax and it is in projectors: xenon, laser, and digital all make a huge difference
One of my local IMAX theaters has the biggest 70mm screens in Southern California. While my local AMC IMAX is the digital IMAX format that Marvel Studios loves to use.

In the mid-2000’s when they started to put big blockbusters on it, I remember thinking it was the best way to watch the films. The IMAX theater in Sacramento, CA I used to go to just had superior sound and if you got the right seat (because seating really mattered for a movie on such a big display), then you were in for a wonderful experience. In particular, I remember watching Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It blew me away. I didn’t even think about how the film wasn’t filmed for IMAX or anything like that. Informative video! However, you didn’t mention the 4th version of IMAX: Dual-Laser/GT IMAX. These are about as rare as 70mm IMAX venues, but they project a 1.43:1 that is technically of a higher standard quality than even 70mm IMAX (which has an untapped level of quality not exactly quantifiable, to my understanding). These are the venues films like DUNE should be experienced on, whereas 70mm IMAX prints are a novelty.
@@taymoy I have actually been to both a GT IMAX and 70mm IMAX venue (BOEING IMAX at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, WA, and the Indiana State Museum IMAX respectively) and really neither format is absolutely better than the other. I prefer film for the texture and history of the prints that accumulate over time. I saw Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX during its initial run, and then again about 7 months later, and the print by then had so many scratches and dust spots. It’s beautiful to see what can change in time. But in terms of seeing a full 1.43:1 picture in flawless quality, a GT IMAX cannot be beaten.
I am happy to be fortunate enough to be close to one of the few true imax theaters with both a 70mm film and laser projectors. To watch a movie filmed for it is insanely special.
We don’t rly have imax where I am. But we have a similar thing called maxx. But the screen is MUCH larger than a normal one. And it’s a better experience than the standard one too (mostly cuz they turn the volume up a little louder than the regular rooms so you can hear so much stuff going on)
fyi, if your movie sucks, it will sucks no matter what! if your movie is good, getting a big screen or a bigger screen not actually make that much of a different. NO ONE in the world can tell the metric of enjoyment differences watching DUNE 2 from regular cinema than imax
Here in Brazil we currently have 13 IMAX theaters across our 27 states. Only one has the new Laser system and none have a 1.43:1 screen. The one in my state opened at the end of 2016 with the release of The Force Awakens. This one has a slightly smaller screen than the Cinemark XD theater nearby that I went to. The audio is for sure not properly calibrated at times, being hurtfully loud, and the only acceptable seats are the middle ones. And yet, the experience is 1000 times better than any other available here. The regular ones have terribly low sound. I can literally hear people eat their popcorn like they are sitting next to me. The so-called "LieMAX" is far from the original intent, but it still beats any other theater. (We don't have Dolby Cinema in Brazil, so I can't attest to that)
I highly doubt the audio is not calibrated properly, every imax theatre has to go through an automatic calibration everyday, it uses sensors in the theatre. If you are sure it's not working properly, contact imax, they should take care of it.
@@jachymf.5465 I don't think it's a problem with the theater, but with the movie. I have the impression that some are better mixed than others. But at the same time, both Dune movies were excessively loud, and I don't think they would mix them wrongly... I'll take your advice and notify IMAX next time that happens
@@eujuneca Modern filmmakers have a fetish for insane dynamic ranges on audio when mixing. You have extremely low volume on dialogue and really loud explosions, etc. The thing is, they are getting outta hand, and even in theaters it is getting hard to enjoy the sound nuances. Worse than that ia the fact that they don't do ant type of remixing or compression when redistributing on digital media, so you basically don't hear dialogue and the explosions wake your neighbors.
@@EduardoSantiagoDev yeah, for both Dune movies, dialogue and sound effects were great, but the soundtrack was above everything else. I love to watch movies a bit louder than most people, but that was way too much. And it happened with other movies as well, but not all. That's why I think it's a problem with the mix, not the theater
Hey, this was a great video breaking down a subject that not many know about! I used to run premiere events in theaters and we did one in IMAX and they are SUPER cagey about letting outsiders see the inside of their systems, despite the fact one of the techs basically revealed that it’s just a normal Christie projector in a fancy box with an IMAX logo on it… 😂 Glad this video came across my feed. Well researched and presented, and I loved the graphics work. Bravo! I’d suggest grabbing a lav mic or something though as the audio was very distracting. The fact I kept watching through that says a lot though. Great work! Oh, and it might be worth experimenting with your lighting a bit to darken your background. Might make you pop out from the frame a bit more. Keep it up! Subscribed!
Experienced Dune Part 2 multiple times on the largest Imax screen on earth. Such an awesome way to watch movies. And compared to regular cinemas, even the ones with Dolby Atmos, the Imax sound system is by far the most powerful i‘ve ever heard! Cant wait to see Interstellar in 70mm Imax next week :3
There is only one real IMAX theater near me. It's actually part of a science museum where they show documentaries. I've only gone there on special occasions.
I’ve only ever seen Laser projected IMAX in 1.43:1(approximately) at PaciSci but I’m certain the laser projectors provide a different (imho better) experience than the digital projectors even when projecting similar screen sizes.
Such an interesting video! 🙏 I live across the street from a cinema with an IMAX (lie-max) & Dolby screen My odeon limitless card means I only have to pay £3 / £5 , so I only see new films at the IMAX or Dolby.... This means when I saw Dune 2 for the second time at a "normal" cinema I walked out because the lack of bass made the experience horrendously disappointing to seeing it at my local "lie-max" that might not be the biggest screen, but ooooo boy is that sound system amazing 🙌
You didn’t address imax laser 4K which can display 1:43:1 ratio and is slowly replacing the 2k xenon projectors in compatible 1:43:1 theatres and the theatres which have a 1:90:1 screens can also get a single 4K laser projector
The IMAX Laser auditoriums need two projectors to support 1.43. Citywalk in LA has a IMAX 70mm projector and a dual laser projector setup. It was one of the only theaters capable of showing Nope (there were no IMAX 70mm reels produced despite being filmed in it) in its intended aspect ratio.
I’m privileged to live in the Toronto area one of the few places in the world with True IMAX cinemas seeing films like Dune/oppenheimer in 70MM projected on those large format screen’s is awe inducing and has made me a keen eye in discerning Liemax screens whenever I’m in a theatre outside the city I don’t even waste my time anymore because I know the extra fee isn’t juice worth the squeeze
Assuming Oppenheimer released on 3000 plus screens, the 25 Imax 70mm screens is like .8% of all screens available in the US, the money made from Imax 70mm counts for 2% of the 1 billion it made. normal 70mm screens added another $14 million, so 3.5% of the money made came from this format. I personally think studios will have to use it more often because like it or not, imax is synonymous with premier moviegoing. there is a chance they expand the amount of theaters capable to allow more 70mm/Imax70mm prints. movies are becoming theater, that means bigger shows (hopefully better too) and higher prices for tickets.
Got to watch oppenheimer in real imax, a very cool experience. I didn't even know there was fake Imax, the only one in my state is the full 70mm somehow
not all digital IMAX is LieMAX, Dual Laser projectors project movies in the full 70mm 1.43:1 aspect ratio (where possible) while single laser and dual Xenon projectors (which are being phased out) still project in the LieMAX aspect ratio of 1.90:1
I'm sure you can imaginethe look on my face after watching this. When I had just bought an imax. Ticket for venom the last dance. I'm calling it Liemax from now on.
In my city, IMAX is the second cheapest cinema actually. I don't know if that's because they're trying to get a faithful public before charging more (in other capitals the price is absurd), but for now I'm quite happy with that. I get to pay less than standard cinema for a much bigger screen and a sound high enough that I won't listen to people eating popcorn the whole movie. So in the end it doesn't matter if is filmed for IMAX or not.
I'm fortunate to live near one, I should go see another movie there, it's been a while. People who haven't actually experienced it in that size really have no idea what it's like I haven't watched any since things went digital, but the scale of everything involved is just massive. The first time I went to an "IMAX" film at a regular theater I was very disappointed by just how tiny it was. Never again, I will never again reward them with money for something less than the proper experience until they start properly labeling it.
In my country, the very first IMAX was "True IMAX" the the rest are basically "LieMAX" with Laser. I only visit the true IMAX if I'm gonna be paying more.
For home video releases, I hate the cinema scope (21:9) and prefer digital imax. 1.9:1 fills more of my tv's screen (16:9). I would even go 'back' to screen with a 5:3 ratio
IMAX is not about the size of the screen. We have (in movie theater chain im working at) a regular theater with screen that is almost as big as our biggest liemax screen. We use the same barco series 4 laser projector, even imo better screen since we use screen with a very little gain. No hotspot, and no shakers required to eliminate speckle. we also put atmos there with meyer speakers (sounds much better too imo). I think it's the best regular theater can ever be without being IMAX/Dolby theater. What differentiates imax is the brightness (which is very bright in the center of the screen at 30ish ftL compared to dci standard at 14ftL) and the experience, the aspect ratio combined with wall to wall screen design is making movies feel a lot more immersive, that's why we still get liemax(s) for our future projects. AND our liemax ticket here in Indonesia is only 4-6 usd.
Great video on the subject! I'm lucky to be able to go to the IMAX in Melbourne, Australia ("True IMAX", 70mm projectors, the whole deal). Absolutely my preferred cinema to go to. Have only been going there since I saw Dune 1, but have been able to see things like a Dark Knight Trilogy marathon, original Blade Runner and 2049 back to back, Avatar 2 in 4k 48fps 3D, (which isn't available for home viewing), and I'm seeing Interstellar soon. I would 100% recommend to anyone, go to a 1.43:1 IMAX screen at least once (if reasonable to get there). A note on Dune Part 2 being available to watch on 70mm and Digital, while Dune 1 and 2 were shot digitally, they were both transferred to film and then scanned back to digital. So visually they would be nearly the same (when viewed on the same screen at the same ratio of course).
Audio. Get a separate recorder and microphone. You need to work out that "bedroom echo". Maybe reconsider that green screen halo. Otherwise, this video is solid.
Allready knew old news, been to one of tho only few real imax screens in London, the experience is only worth is if the director has thought of imax when making the film they are working on.
Those IMAX shots are cropped to fit in a 1.43:1 format. If you want to find uncropped 1.43:1 IMAX shots of Oppenheimer, there's an IMAX Trailer (exclusive trailer that was shown in IMAX theaters) that is available as a special feature from the 4K Blu-ray copy of Oppenheimer. From the bonus disc to be specific. You can find download links somewhere on the internet, but i'm not exactly sure where.. I would start searching for the trailer on reddit threads :)
Technically, its more like its a bigger screen with less digital noise and color thats have much closer to irl like oled type of thingy and in movie theaters the speakers are much much higher quality too and louder
Great video! Another point to add is that some of the “Experience it in IMAX” films actually crop off the sides to fit the 1.90:1 IMAX screens, meaning that you pay more to see less of the movie!
I could have told you that, the IMAX screen that I've gone to the most often over the years is an actual IMAX as in it's difficult to see the entire screen at any given time and the projector was about the same size as a VW bug with negatives about the size of a palm of the hand per frame. I've gone to more modern ones and they're tiny, they're only slightly larger than a normal screen and not worth the price.
1) compelety left out imax with laser which can do 1:43.1 on a gt screen with 2 projectors. 2) Digital imax is still 26 % bigger which is a good thing. sure dual laser and 15/70mm will always be 40 % bigger but numbers of screens are less 3) out of 2000+ imax theatres 30 + are 15/70 and 40 (apporx) are dual laser. yes they are still less but its improving 4) digital dmr aka experince it imax flims had a value until dolby cinema. 5) imax is doing a terrible job in differnincating the movies. alien romulus had exclusive aspect ratio yet it got experince in imax poster, so did rrr. Sure the flimed/ formatted for imax is there but its still very inconsisent
If you want to experience IMAX from home on a budget there are two options, the first one is searching through old DVD's that have a full screen option and it's like you're watching an IMAX image on your TV. The second option is just cutting two pieces of black construction paper and taping them the left and right of your TV.
BLASPHEMY 😅 But to be fair, there is a big difference between Dune Part 2 and a standard film in a lot of different ways. But in general I usually save IMAX screenings for films that I either know will have a great soundtrack or you just want to see on a big screen with a big audio system.
yeah I'm not sure. I think IMAX will always have the advantage due to how much directors love using it. I haven't really heard any people in film talk much about 4DX - so I think IMAX will remain the premium format for now
@@taymoy I think they're still the only game in town for the actual full sized IMAX, for the smaller versions they may lose out. But, really, this is niche hardware, niche screens and I think most of the full sized screens in the US are attached to educational institutions that show a lot of educational stuff anyways.
My parents took me and my sister to the Franklin institute IMAX in 2008 to see the dark Knight, when the explosion went off I pissed in my pants it was so loud. I was 8 so I was really embarrassed, I watched the whole rest of the film with piss in my pants hoping nobody would notice. 😂 Just thought I'd share my first true IMAX experience.
@@taymoy Wild to think about now, glad I didn't leave because of piss pants because in retrospect I was very lucky to have my first IMAX experience be "real" IMAX. Would love to go back someday, highly recommend if you're every in Philadelphia. Just avoid the middle row, I think that's where I left my mark.
imax is way too big to my liking, it's so big it's almost impossible to see everything on the screen. I'm ok with a normal screen and a good sound, I can enjoy more of a movie.
That's kind of the point and that's why it's so stupid to screen things on it that are intended to also be screened in regular theaters or sold on home media.
It's disappointing to wrap up the history from 1971 to 2002 in just 50 seconds. When talking about IMAX DMR from 2002 onwards, it's normal to introduce Warner Bros. films such as "The Matrix" and the "Harry Potter" series, so why videos of MCU films? I don't think the Oppenheimer you used is a good representation of 1.43 with a cropped image. Some scenes in MCU works are cropped to 1.90:1, so your explanation is misleading. Why did you introduce the IMAX version of "Top Gun: Maverick" with a cropped image closer to a square, rather than an aspect ratio of 1.90:1? ? Did you know that the latest Alien movie was shot with a 1.90:1 IMAX version, even though it wasn't shot with an IMAX digital camera? ? But overall it's a well-organized video. good

We don’t rly have imax where I am. But we have a similar thing called maxx. But the screen is MUCH larger than a normal one. And it’s a better experience than the standard one too (mostly cuz they turn the volume up a little louder than the regular rooms so you can hear so much stuff going on)
There’s a lot of IMAX today with horizontal black-bars too and bottom. Even in IMAX theatres. That is indeed “a scam”
We used to have an IMAX attraction in Las vegas. The screen was 7 stories tall and had lapbars. Now we have the msg sphere
Go buy a rode wireless go and clip it to your shirt. Other than that awesome shit dude!
yeah i messed up the audio a bit on this episode - will get better next time. Thanks for watching!
fyi, if your movie sucks, it will sucks no matter what!
if your movie is good, getting a big screen or a bigger screen not actually make that much of a different.
NO ONE in the world can tell the metric of enjoyment differences watching DUNE 2 from regular cinema than imax
Very good and concise look at this IMAX CONUNDRUM - James D. Watkins, artistic director of PHOENIX PRODUCTIONS.
Just seen Interstellar in 70mm IMAX.. dude.. its perfect
I watched Oppenheimer at the BFI IMAX in 15 70mm, I’ve never experienced anything like it
Here in Brazil we currently have 13 IMAX theaters across our 27 states.
Well researched! Thankyou!
So glad to see the Ontario Place Cinesphere, that thing was incredible.
Been able to see a couple movies there and it's incredible!
Hey, this was a great video breaking down a subject that not many know about! I used to run premiere events in theaters and we did one in IMAX and they are SUPER cagey about letting outsiders see the inside of their systems, despite the fact one of the techs basically revealed that it’s just a normal Christie projector in a fancy box with an IMAX logo on it… 😂
Glad this video came across my feed.
I live across the street from a cinema with an IMAX (lie-max) & Dolby screen
My odeon limitless card means I only have to pay £3 / £5 , so I only see new films at the IMAX or Dolby....
This means when I saw Dune 2 for the second time at a "normal" cinema I walked out because the lack of bass made the experience horrendously disappointing to seeing it at my local "lie-max" that might not be the biggest screen, but ooooo boy is that sound system amazing 🙌
Even Liemax can still be pretty amazing when the movie is made for it!
And that's awesome you get to see movies for so cheap haha
Great video
Great video. Suggestion: get a new lapel mic or maybe some room treatments.
I love this video! Instant sub! May I suggest getting a mic, your video quality is so high that it deserves great audio!
I’ve seen IMAX and I’ve seen a standard screen. I notice a difference even if it isn’t true imax.
This was super insightful! Thanks!
I live around Toronto as well!
I like going to the square one theatre. The cinesphere was great too - excited for it to come back
Besides the Cinesphere, where else has true IMAX in Toronto?
Waiting for the "How the 'How IMAX Tricks You' Video Tricks You" video.
Great video, glad it popped up in my recommended
thanks so much!
@@taymoy ♥️
Nice sum up of the issue, keep doing this good work!
Got to watch oppenheimer in real imax, a very cool experience. I didn't even know there was fake Imax, the only one in my state is the full 70mm somehow
What’s funny is I am from a small city in India and we have true IMAX 70mm screen it’s really immersive experience (costs about 5 dollars)
I used to go to the one at the Milwaukee museum of nature history
Great viewpoint... subscribed 👌
I live in NYC, so I've seen true IMAX at the AMC Lincoln SQ.
Funniest IMAX experience for me was this year when watching Dune part 2. The screen was so small, that the film frame can be seen on the floor. 🤦♂🤦♂
not all digital IMAX is LieMAX, Dual Laser projectors project movies in the full 70mm 1.43:1 aspect ratio (where possible) while single laser and dual Xenon projectors (which are being phased out) still project in the LieMAX aspect ratio of 1.90:1
I'm sure you can imaginethe look on my face after watching this. When I had just bought an imax. Ticket for venom the last dance.
I'm calling it Liemax from now on.
lmaooo good call!
Cardiff has the SMALLEST 'imax' screen in the UK! I refuse to waste my cash there!
i dont think my theater even has any none imax screens anymore, and now they got something better than dolby atmos for the sound to
Yes, it is just marketing. I have stumbled over this marketing trick too, when I fall into a rabbit hole about cameras and aspect ratios
There's less than 20 true IMAX theatres in the US.
Really great video! Very well edited and researched!
Thanks for watching! Really appreciate it :)
square = premium lol we should also just all have square TVs also. Maybe 4:3 would be nice.
In my country, the very first IMAX was "True IMAX" the the rest are basically "LieMAX" with Laser. I only visit the true IMAX if I'm gonna be paying more.
I wish they would show movies in their full frame even if it's 4:3 like the Zack Snyder Justice League.
Oppenheimer on 70mm film was something to witness saw it at the Chinese theater incredible way to watch a movie if u ever get the chance do it
yeah I watched Oppenheimer in 70mm here in Canada, incredible experience. I'm excited for the re-release of interstellar as well
@@taymoy we might be getting Lawrence of Arabia playing in 70mm here in NYC at the Paris theatre owned by Netflix
They should regularly replay previously released movies. IMAX repertory theatre.
That would be a great idea! I'd love to see Oppenheimer again
Audio. Get a separate recorder and microphone. You need to work out that "bedroom echo". Maybe reconsider that green screen halo. Otherwise, this video is solid.
Allready knew old news, been to one of tho only few real imax screens in London, the experience is only worth is if the director has thought of imax when making the film they are working on.
yeah totally - it can be really hit or miss
How did you get the 1.43:1 imax ratio shots of oppenheimer?
Those IMAX shots are cropped to fit in a 1.43:1 format. If you want to find uncropped 1.43:1 IMAX shots of Oppenheimer, there's an IMAX Trailer (exclusive trailer that was shown in IMAX theaters) that is available as a special feature from the 4K Blu-ray copy of Oppenheimer. From the bonus disc to be specific. You can find download links somewhere on the internet, but i'm not exactly sure where.. I would start searching for the trailer on reddit threads :)
@@orbit203is there anything like that for interstellar?
@@SwithinFeely There isn’t sadly.
Great shares mate! Awesome breakdown
thanks so much dude!
Y’all paying double the price! I pay a monthly $25 to watch 3 movies a week 😌
dang! where are you getting this deal?
AMC a list. you can watch 3 movies any format per week. I should’ve gotten this year’s ago. Like you make the money back in one movie
So IMAX is just a bigger screen with the same video quality?
Technically, its more like its a bigger screen with less digital noise and color thats have much closer to irl like oled type of thingy and in movie theaters the speakers are much much higher quality too and louder
a shot for every time Taylor says "IMAX"
interesting video, tho.
Great video! Another point to add is that some of the “Experience it in IMAX” films actually crop off the sides to fit the 1.90:1 IMAX screens, meaning that you pay more to see less of the movie!
oh wow that's crazy - didn't even think about that!
2) Digital imax is still 26 % bigger which is a good thing. sure dual laser and 15/70mm will always be 40 % bigger but numbers of screens are less
3) out of 2000+ imax theatres 30 + are 15/70 and 40 (apporx) are dual laser. yes they are still less but its improving
4) digital dmr aka experince it imax flims had a value until dolby cinema.
5) imax is doing a terrible job in differnincating the movies. alien romulus had exclusive aspect ratio yet it got experince in imax poster, so did rrr. Sure the flimed/ formatted for imax is there but its still very inconsisent
In Guatemala we only have one IMAX screen. Of course it isn't 70mm.
I maynever experience true IMAX
If you want to experience IMAX from home on a budget there are two options, the first one is searching through old DVD's that have a full screen option and it's like you're watching an IMAX image on your TV. The second option is just cutting two pieces of black construction paper and taping them the left and right of your TV.
Cool video. Please invest in a lav mic
Liemax vs. dolby cinema. Which one is better?
BLASPHEMY 😅
But to be fair, there is a big difference between Dune Part 2 and a standard film in a lot of different ways. But in general I usually save IMAX screenings for films that I either know will have a great soundtrack or you just want to see on a big screen with a big audio system.
No wonder I never understood the fuzz about IMAX, most of it is just slightly bigger screens.
You think 4DX is becoming more popular? I wonder if it will ever top IMAX in terms of popularity.
yeah I'm not sure.
😂 Just thought I'd share my first true IMAX experience.
hahaha! that's amazing - honestly the dark knight is worth sitting through that. I imagine the IMAX experience was incredible
My guy, the world's largest IMAX screen is "only" 70 feet high (in Germany). So I don't really know what you mean by that 97 feet standard.
imax is way too big to my liking, it's so big it's almost impossible to see everything on the screen. I'm ok with a normal screen and a good sound, I can enjoy more of a movie.
That's kind of the point and that's why it's so stupid to screen things on it that are intended to also be screened in regular theaters or sold on home media.
Hm. Id hardly call sending IMAX cameras to space (multiple times) an experimental and niche format that's struggling...
He doesn't know I saw Oppenheimer at the Regina Science Center
hahah I saw Oppenheimer in 70mm as well. And it was pretty mind blowing
That’s some bad vocal-fry, Harry.
so does that mean that NO animated movie could ever be true IMAX?
I’m very lucky I have a pretty nice near me that’s massive
I thought the terms "True IMAX" and "LieMAX" refers to the cinema screens not the mediums of the movies?
But overall it's a well-organized video. good
I prefer AMC Dolby Cinema
