Good to know how the Protestants work ethic was👍

There’s no doubt to me that a strong work ethic is one of our greatest talents as a society. But like you said, a strong work ethic specifically within the Western World, has been taken to an extreme that isn’t just financially beneficial, but greatly dehumanizing. We deserve to be lazy at times without self-sabotaging ourselves. Great video!

I don’t believe work is related to morality at all. We work to make life more comfortable for ourselves which includes helping those we care for .
If I meditate then I can be accused of non productivity or laziness but I put effort into learning and practicing meditation

Good video. So long ago the average lifespan was so much younger - under 30. There was never enough time to truly work your way to wealth and comfort so everyone was required to work their lives away. I’m so glad in today’s day and age, people value work/life balance. I use my PTO and my sick days. I will never give all my time to a company that can replace me when my time here is done.

I've always said, if you don't use your PTO (and other benefits) you're refusing pay.

For twelve years I worked as an operator at AT&T. I hated that job with a passion but it did pay enough for me to afford the necessities of life and have something left over. After twelve years I'd had enough of never knowing what day I was going to be off at least two weeks in advance so I could plan something. I'd had enough of never know what my work hours were going to be from week to week or what day of the week I would finally have off. I quit and. never looked back. I knew that job was the source of my frustrations and as time went by I have been proven right. I am so glad I quit.

That boomer lite reference to gen X was hilarious and on point 😂 it’s very interesting to see this point of view from 17th century. I’m actually a huge gamer if you didn’t already know lol so I always looked for ways to give gaming credit where it’s due. Gaming helped me in so many ways, socially and educationally. I know others where gaming kept them out of trouble so maybe God put them on that path for a reason? I see the connection where the gamers are like the early Protestants and calvinists. I was always a smaller guy so sports was never really an option, academics wasn’t my strongest or most appealing option either. I always played with friends outside but growing up in Utah made it very very cold to play outside in the long winters. This is where gaming came in. We could all still connect and socialize with each other but through the video games we played online even during the harsh winters or hottest days outside. As a child, I used to love math because we had a interactive math teaching/practice video game in class! I gained a lot of knowledge about people through playing games and always communicating with others, I feel like this trait I gained helped me become a people person as I grew older, eventually helping me choose Marketing as my Major in College. Wanting to grow my gaming brand and or work in a studio to help promote the video games I grew up loving. If it wasn’t for gaming, I probably would’ve never found this love for marketing. I chose to invest my time and capital into gaming and currently I’m on a scholarship for gaming and “felt like a holy calling” ever since. It’s funny thinking about “exorbitant spending” because as a gamer, it’s always helped me save money from going out all the time to meet friends and socialize because we could do it online through video games! Eventually giving me the freedom to invest all of that money I saved through the years! I’m sorry if I’m a little biased here hah❤ , I just wanted to give a great comment and my personal experience! Great video, and I’ll have to start using those ghosts of Calvinist and boomer lite references more often when they’re reaching out to me next time😂

Your observations regarding gaming are spot-on. There are in fact many studies that have tried to debunk the myth that gaming is bad. In fact, they can teach problem-solving skills, perseverance, and grit. A good friend of mine is a consumate gamer and is always touting it. I used to do a bit, and would like to do more, but it's hard for me for all the reasons this video discusses. But for the record, I agree with you!

Interesting hearing this point of view, interesting how he can interpret that being busy and working hard is working to earn a place in heaven by doing the work God chose for you. I'm glad that times have changed and we can work to enjoy ourselves and not feel as if a healthy work life balance means we won't make it to heaven.

Great video💯. I’ve been focusing on Marx that seems to tie that accumulation of wealth and egoism. Though Weber brings kind of a fresh new perspective on the topic. Was wondering if there were more differences between the 2 Sociological Thinksrs

You have to pair work ethic with pursuit of responsibility and thrift as a positive virtue.
You are not wasting your potential betterment of society or yourself.
As a worker, business manager, or investor. You're providing a service and you're getting paid for it.
I find the motivations of Protestant values admirably productive so that we all can have more and better futures.
Sacrificing such values just heaps more responsibility on those who do work like this.

I actually rebel against this live to work culture we have in the US. I'll take sick days off and go upstate for walk by the Hudson if I feel like it. I'll do the minimum that's needed. I take months off to travel to south America, India etc. I refuse to buy into the American slave mentality. You only have one life to live and I refuse to do it in the office!

A great perspective. Makes me think of the book "The 4-Hoir Workweek." A fascinating counterpoint to this productivity-obsessed perspective.

@@NutshellBrainery I'd like to say I by no means meant to indicate that when I do a task I do it hastily or sloppy. Whatever little I do I put my full effort into it- I just take less work. I think it's a balance which you have to create for yourself, what works for you. I have to say the productivitis is getting worse since I was a kid, as nowadays parents inundate their kids with tasks, for example I know a lot of people with kids during summer vacation the parents just fill up the day with tasks, whether it's 8am to 9am cello practice, 10am to 11am therapist appointment 1pm to 3pm soccer practice, 5pm to 6pm reading etc etc. There is this fear that a child should not have any time just to do nothing. The parents are just as obssesed, when they go for vacation, they have to plan every moment of it like it's a military exercise, they pick their "reading list" for the vacation, I thought vacation was just to be!
