The word Kosovo means “Land of the Blackbird” in Serbia. Every other geographical location there is named in Serbian as well, that should give you the logical conclusion who has lived in those lands for centuries. Kosovo and Metohija is considered the “cradle of Serbian civilization” and “Serbian holly land”. Kosovo is where Serbians fought Ottomans who were marching to conquer Europe. A lot of Serbian blood has been shed trough the centuries to protect those lands because they’re sacred to the Serbian people. A larger population of Albanians didn’t really live there until after WW2. In the 90s, when Yugoslavia was in a civil war and it was falling apart, Albanians living in Kosovo took up arms and started killing and banishing the Serbian population, a lot of Serbians were kidnapped and taken to the infamous “yellow house” in Albania were they were cut open for organs to be sold on the black market.
Albanians started claiming that Kosovo and Metohija is their rightful land and that they started destroying and burning down medieval Serbian churches and monasteries to erase all traces of Serbian life there for centuries (there are videos of it on UA-cam, for anyone interested) that even UNESCO had to intervene and the under their protection the last 4 non-destroyed Serbian Orthodox monasteries in Kosovo because they’re a thousand years old heritage that shouldn’t disappear.
So, yeah, I think it’s pretty clear why Serbians will never recognize Kosovo as independent aka Albanian. What Jerusalem is to Jewish people, Kosovo is to Serbian people. 🙂
Dang! Wow. Thank you for that information. I had no idea. The history sounds so sad. I've only read a bit about Milosevic and what happened recently. From the tiny amount I've read, it seemed like that was too many sad events. So, it's unfortunate to hear there were even MORE sad events like that. Hopefully, the future will be peaceful!
Every country that experienced american bomb democracy becomes an unhappy country.
@Illyrian Warrior serbs let Albanians to come and live on Kosovo, and then Albanians started embarrassing them and make them leave, that's why there's more Albanians.
@Illyrian Soldier You’re not illyrians and dardaina is Serbia word, bye
@@janakolasinac1686 Sorry to hear about your grandfather's home and your home! I can't imagine how hard it is to deal with that. Idk how the insurance system is there. You seem to know a lot about the history. Thank you for the information.
In Serbia, it is normal to live with my parents and grandparents in the house. In my house we have seven family members. My grandparents also lived in the same house. We younger people take care of the elderly and the youngest in the house. Of course we all work and help .In Serbia, the economy is not strong and that is why we all stick together. In Serbia, the family always comes first.
Yep. That is awesome. Family should always come first. Thanks for watching Katarina! Cool name btw. It's very uncommon here.

Very similar to Asia in that sense. My Mrs was 40 living with parents and sister in big 3 storey house. We now live by Hilton on Trg Slavija

Serbia or Serbian Orthodox church to be exact uses Julian calendar and that's why Christmas is on January 7th and new years or Orthodox new years is on 14th of January. But that calendar is only used for religious purposes in our every day life we use same calendar as rest of the world. And that is not the case only for Serbia many Orthodox churches use Julian calendar so Christmas is on January the 7th in Serbia, Montenegro, Serbian part of Bosnia, Russia, Georgia...
Dang. It's like that in other countries too. So cool and interesting! Thank you for the information! Appreciate it!
@@evanramino1700 Ok-Dragan gave basic information about Orthodoxy-there is much more to add---but the main information is that Orthodoxy was the first Christianity--Constantine (Roman Empire--17 emperor from the territory of Serbia)--all other Christian faiths broke away from Orthodoxy through the centuries--greeting

By the way, we have the oldest calendar in the world, which is used by NASA and there are no delays or errors. It is now 7529 years
Christmas is always on 7th and publicly too, the other date (that US uses is just used as justification to get good meal and to drink)
Cool video!
Sounds a lot like the Asian culture in Serbia. We're not require to leave the house until 21, 23.. We also don't leave our parents or grandparents in some home. They took care of us, it will be our time to take care of them in return. No shaming, nothing, it's in our cultures. We are not big into gifts as well, whatever the occasion is, usually is about food & getting together that is far more important. I mean in terms of generality. Well, we Asians aren't tall in general, not that kind of tall. That is probably the obvious exception. :-)
Cheers from Malaysia
Thank you. The focus on gift giving instead of enjoying time together makes people less happy here. People in general here look to what others have and compare themselves. When they have less, they feel inferior. Hopefully, the focus of other countries is more on what matters most. Health and fun. Money is important but what's the point of having money if you arent happy. The way Serbians and people in Malaysia behave during holidays/special occasions seems to push people towards the right path. Anyways, thanks for checking out my video! Have a great one.
@@evanramino1700 You pointed out the obvious :-) Kudos 👍😊
I believe there's more to just things/ or possessions. Life in itself is a priceless 'gift'!

I guess in US is like "what goes around comes around" situation , parents kick their kids out of the house when they are 19, but when they get old they get shoved into the nursing homes in return.
Yea. I was happy to learn Serbians don't do that. There are many here that do take care of their parents though. Being in a nursing home sounds so depressing!!
Doing an essay in the States, comparing my Ethiopian origin country to Serbia. I attend a Serbian Orthodox Church which is where my interest originates, but I am loving this video! You are adorable & charismatic. The reason Christmas falls in January is because they follow the Eastern Orthodox calendar, which have Jesus’s birthday in January.
Have you seen the original south Slavic script, called the Glagolitic script? Looks very similar to the Ethiopian one.
Get out the Glagolitic script. I think you’ll find it quite interesting..
Average height for Men is actually more, because if you don't include older generations. Men up to 40 are over 6 feet and average is 182-183cm.
Younger generations up to 20-25 are even taller.

Wow! I'm impressed. You have mentioned very important facts that hardly anyone talks about, and all in one video! Not to mention the part where you talk about the Serbian map! 👍 Thumbs up for that! I live in the U.S. and I often see elderly over 90 years of age shopping for their groceries even though they can hardly walk or reach higher shelves. If I could, I would bring them all to my house! 😄 Maybe one day! And yes, I'm attached to my kids, especially my son. A bond between a Serb mother and her son is strong!

@@evanramino1700 There is a saying in Serbia that the second largest Serbian city in the world is Chicago. I believe there's a population of over 500 000 Serbian people in it. Only Belgrade has a larger number of Serbs with its 2 000 000 occupants. Greetings from Serbia!
I can confirm that we're tall. I'm 181, a woman. My two brothers are 193 and 195.
I am from the South of Serbia and I agree completly on the points you made. I am only born in Serbia but I lived all my life in foreign countries. The diaspora of Serbia is very huge, at least 2 to 3 milioms Serbs live outside they country. So I wish to share my store. I was born in Serbia in the year 2000, my father moved to Switzerland for his phd in 1999 due to the Kosovo war. I and my mother joined him a bite after my birth. So I spent the first six years of my life in Lausanne, where I learned french. Later we moved to Germany, where arround half a milion of Serbs live. So I lived 3 years in Berlin and the moved to Munich, where I am still living ( 13 years almost). I finisched a french schoil in Germany because I lived in Switzerland before, so I speak French, Serbian, German and English. Then I finished this year my Bachelor in Chemistry and Biochemistry at the LMU in Munich. Now I wish to leave Germany, since I never felt welcomed and I am always felling as a foreigner my entire life. Every year I am travelling to Serbia, to visit my grand parents. Now unfortunatly my grand father died at age 73 due to covid. Even half a year after his death, I miss him a lot. I spent a lot of time calling him will I was in Germany, talking about my life as a student.
To answer your question we call the 7 January Badnje Veće ( Christmas). So this is because we use the Gregorien Calender that is less precise then the Julien Calendar used by Catholics, so the Serbian Orthodox Calendar is going more forward in time. And traditionaly we make a huge bread ( pogaća) for the 7th, and we put a coin inside. Then when all the familly is arround the table we rotate the pogaća and the father decides when to stop. And every one takes then a equal part of the bread, the one that get the coin will have the luck for this year.
I hope you will enjoy travelling through Serbia, I am from Niš actually.
And for Christmas we don't give presents. For children yes. But it is more important for us to gather with our family. And then we gather with all our loved ones in front of the Church.
♥️❤️♥️

About average hight- most Serbs have Dinaric antropology type. Those men are tall and strong highlenders. 😀
If you take a roommate in your apartment (that was owned by your family since your grandfathers grandfather) and after a few years he claims that a room he lives in is a separate apartment and in his ownership, what would you do?

Kosovo or Kosovo and Metohija have been part of Serbian territory since ancient times. And there is the Old Monestery and Churches from the 9th century, which was build by Serbian rulers.

Ancient times
Slavic Avars and Serbs came to Ballkans in 7th century
officially accepted christianity in 9th century
those Churches in Kosova are build
100 years after Jesus death
Albanians were Christians way way before slavs

About reactions on wrong map, most People would try to explain the Kosovo situation like people in the coments but some could be frustrated like People Who lost someone during 1999 war. We see Kosovo as occupied province beside formaly it is not declared as occupied.
Ya. I could see how it could be frustrating for some people.
There is something called family Value. They look out and look after each other whoever young or old as family. Feel sorry for western countries, they kick out each other as soon as become adult or getting old and that’s why you can hear a lot old people died alone in the house for long time no one noticed.
I agree with you. It's always sad to have older people feeling lonely and neglected.

I'm 191cm, so around 6'3'' and I often times feel quite average when I'm walking around the city, it's not like there's a ton of people taller than me, but the majority either matches my height or are a couple centimeters taller, about 5 or 6.
The difference between your and our Christmas is because we celebrate it as it meant to be, the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of Christ. So for Orthodox Serbian Christmas you say "Hristos se rodi" meaning "Christ is born" and the other one will answer "Vaistinu se rodi" meaning "He is truly born".
I had no idea there was a difference. Thanks for the information! I also forgot to mention you guys have that delish looking bread cesnica. Do you make that every xmas or is it a regular food you prepare/buy?
@@evanramino1700 We make it for Christmas and our family Saint day (Slava), usually made by our grandmothers or mothers as it symbolizes the body of Christ. Well of course you don't kick your parents or grandparents to a retirement home. They didn't kick you out of the house when you were 20, right? It goes both ways. Actually no, that is Serbia, bosnian serbs are average 1,85 tall, montenegrin serbs are also round that number, which does make them 2nd in europe or sometimes even first(depends on the source). This has to do with genetics and ancesutors of serbs on the certain territory.

In Serbia Santa Clause is connected with the New Year. Orthodox Serbs celebrate Xmas by old calendar (in January 7th) and correctly Xmas for them is family gathering with traditional values and customs - Burning the oak branch instead of decorating coniferous tree (that is reserved for new year which comes before Xmas in Serbia)
Xmas should be for the family and not about the gifts. The malls here are PACKED for like 2 months before Christmas. It's annoying. If it makes people happy, it's cool i guess. But, Serbian way is way better imo. Thanks for watcihng Colin!
@@evanramino1700 xmas here is not commercialized at all. Serbs keep it spiritual, religious and personal. there is xmas wheat - wheat grains are wetted on st nicolas, some 2 weeks before xmas, by xmas wheat seedlings are nice and green so you light a candle in the middle of it. we call it bozicno zito. it the anticipation of xmas people organize oak burning. google for paljenje badnjaka. next to bonfire we share cooked wine or brandy and even fish stew or roast meat. there are many more traditional customs for xmas here. but Easter with colored eggs is nice too. this year is on May the first. if you will be here you will enjoy
@@colinafobe2152 Just to clarify this: burning of the oak branch (badnjak) is not a substitute for Christmas tree (you can still have Christmas tree if you want). But oak ritual comes for pre-Christian tradition, and it's connected to Perun, ancient Salvic God of thunder and war.
@@Sleepery22 but in serbia as far as i know "xmas tree" is called "new year tree" novogodisnja jelka. badnjak oak is not subtitute but it is completely different tradition
@@colinafobe2152 It's called 'new year tree' (novogodisnja jelka), first coz the calendar is shifted, and people put it up for Gregorian new year, keep it over the Christmas holidays all the way till Julian new year (13th).
Second, in socialist times it was not cool to call it 'Christmas tree'.
Someone has probably answered this by now, but just in case they haven’t…
Serbia is an Orthodox nation, so they go by the Orthodox, or Julian, calendar vs the Gregorian calendar that most nations use. That means that some major holidays like Christmas, New Years, and Easter will fall on different days. There are times when Easter will fall on the same day, but Christmas is always January 7 and New Year’s January 14. Basically the differing calendars come from the Great Schism of 1054 when the Catholic and Orthodox churches split, and they chose not to adopt the new Gregorian calendar.
Serbian man are very tall...and shows Klitschko😄👍
My grandfather once told me a story about a son who has build a new house for his young family and his parents have helped a lot around it.His parents were old and as all old people had that smell, poor eyesight and bladder control. He and his wife discussed what to do with new clean house and old parents ,they decided to place them in barn and to feed them fom one big old pot.Old parents cried but what could they do... so their son and oldest grandson started preparing the barn and upon placing pot in it grandson asked father Dad we should decide if this pot will be sufficient for you, mother and grandparents if they are still alive when I become a parent.

The reason Christmas falls on january 7th is that our orthodox church still uses the old medival calendar (julian calendar i think) which lags behind 13 days behind the new Gregorian one because of inaccuracies in measurements at the time, that's why a lot of holidays are off by 13 days

I travel 750km in one way many times in year, pack my wife and children to go to my parents in serbia to do everything around the house, cut grass, fix everything, cut wood for winter, buy everything in shop what they need, fix car, change tyres. They lived their working life to give every penny to me and my bro, so we do everything we can to make their life easier. That is in our culture. We the serbs don't kick our littleones out of the house like rest of the world. We help them to built their own, so they can leave and make their own life story. Serb
Yeah, as a Serb all of these were accurate! My grandma frequently visits her mother to take care of her and talk to her (about every day). When my older sister announced she wanted to move out at the age of eighteen, my parents (and i) couldnt really understand why, because it would simply make much more logical sense for her to stay here for a bit longer. We were also not taught much about Kosovo and i usually see many graffiti of "Kosovo je Srbija" (kosovo is serbia). I am personally not too much into politics so i don't mind any beliefs regarding that subject. I can also confirm the facts about height and how we spend our Christmas
Everything you said is true. ☺ But you have never been to Serbia?

Regarding our Orthodox Christmas that falls on the 7th of January... it's because of the old Christian calendar that all Orthodox Christians celebrate.
However, even though we don't exchange gifts during our Christmas (we do on New Year's Eve instead), we Serbs are the only culture/people that treat "the first guest that pays us a visit" in the morning of Christmas Day like a KING or QUEEN.....we give them breakfast (food to go), drink (alcohol), clothes, in some cases even money LoL...this has to do with the Jesus's birth and the Kings that traveled to see the baby Jesus.
Another interesting fact about Serbia and the Culture.....the original meaning of the Cross is ancestry, your grandparents and relatives that are not alive anymore ....the Orthodox Cross has two smaller crossing sections besides the big in the middle ( bottom is a little bit slanted upwards...it means the beginning of everyone's life on Earth; and at the top, which is straight across....it means the end of life on Earth)
Also many Serbs feel that family is more important than anything in the world....the 4 symbols of C(fire symbols)around the Cross in our Crest(Heraldry)and the flag, represent just that "Family is very important, and the fire/warmth in the family house has to be always ON"
Cheers 🍻
Kinda similar with indonesian culture tho.
We're living with our parent even when we are married and have our own family.
Mostly son who will take those responsibilities to our parents.

We use the old calendar, that is why it is all 14 days later than the new calendar. Example: Easter 14 days later than yours / Christmas 14 days later than yours / That is why we are celebrating two new years/ 01.01 we call it the calendar new year, and 14.01 according to the old calendar
Thanks Nervonzi!
Im from Serbia and on january 7th is Srbian chrismas but 31st december is normal chrismas so we have serbian and normal chrismas
nema srpstva bez tri prsta ------ there is no Serbianness without three fingers
Hello,
You probably already had the answer about christmas being the january 7th, but in case, here is the simple reason:
serbians are orthodox, and although they casually use the gregorian calendar, the religious calendar is still the julian one, wich has two weeks delay.
Regards :-)
4:00 My family live in this single place for more than 200 years. There are some families here that have roots for more than 250 years. Maybe more...
Mate, no offend, BUT, there are other Christianities than Catholic. If you don't learn in school that there is Orthodox Christianity (Russia, etc.) then your educational system sucks. Here, it is normal to know the existence of all religions. Not all, all, but most important.
Nice overview, though...
My bad Dejan. I should have know about that lol. I'm an idiot. I can't blame it on the education system.
so if you ask your grand grand fother or look more deep
im sure you will find that
russian brought prisoniers to occupy balkan countries

no good history.
Because of glogorian calendar who is going 13 days in future, in old Serbia christmas was celebrating 25.12, but now because of new calendar its 13 days furter.
Man can live vhit ther perents whol life like my father i live whit my mother fother grandma granpa yoinger brother and me

Concerning Christmas, 12/25 or 01/07. Our Church calendar is Julian and western Church calendar is Gregorian. The difference is 13 days.
Actually average height is around 185cm or even more for male, as much people i've met in my life. Im 183cm tall and 95% of people i stand to are taller than me, lol. So first hand information from Serbia. :D
p.s. women are also tall around 175-7cm on average
i know man. i got here and it's crazy! lol don't bring ur girl here
Average male height in Serbia is 6.0' by official data.
My boyfriend, who is a Serb, is about if not over 6 foot, meanwhile my short barely 5-foot ass is just heading for the heels every time I have to take a picture with us side by side. But he's nice and can be a gentleman at times. Though he is stubborn as hell when we disagree.
You can just put some clips of current serbian president meeting foreign dignitaries. I think they vote for him in Serbia just to make the political class in the rest of the world feel small and insignificant.
Sertbian are mostly Orthodox. So as we are Christians as it was from the begining we didn't changed our religious calender it is still the Julius Ceasar's. So that is why we celebrate the 6th of january Christmas. in fact is the 24th of December but not like in the Gregorian calender that was instored in1600 something i think. has to be proved.
Same with us Arabs especially lavent Arabs. We all live and stay with our parents till we get narrated and we take care of everyone even if we move abroad, we send a lot of money back home. Mostly every country that’s not western follow these pure traditions. Plus, Serbians celebrate Christmas on Jan the 7th cuz their orthodox just like some of the Arab orthodox back home. Most Arab countries have indigenous arab Jews, orthodox arab Christians and arab Catholics, and then arab Muslims that Islam came down as the last religion for all the Arabs which some of them reverted to Islam. Do Palestine next please.
I live in Serbia and I'm Serbian, I'm 15 years old and I'm 172 cm tall, I'm not even the tallest person in the class
for Christmas thing very true and I don’t wanna explain why it goes to January 7
Do Jamaica next
Ja sam srbin (i am serbian)
In Serbia like in most orthodox Christian countries the older Julian calendar is used by the Orthodox Church - that is why Christmas is on the 7th January in Katholik and Protestant confession they use the Gregorian calendar that basicallly took out 2 weeks so not movable feasts move 2 weeks in advance
It's Jan 7 by the Gregorian calendar which makes it Dec 25th by the Julian calendar. We celebrate our religious dates based on the days of the Julian calendar. That's why we have another New Years day on Jan 14th. And presents are for kids for New Year and not Christmas.
Thanks Aleksandar.
On July 16, 1054, Patriarch of Constantinople Michael Cerularius was excommunicated. He started the “Great Schism” that created the Catholics.
All Christians used Julian calendar. In 1582 the Julian calendar was changed by the Catholic Pope Gregory XII and adopted by the catholic church and by governments of the Catholic countries. Orthodox church never changed their calendar. So, the Christmas date celebrated in Serbia is the original date of the Christmas. Greeks are Orthodox but have changed to celebrate Catholic Christmas.
KOSOVO ACCEPTED TO BE A PART OF SERBIA
Celebrating Christmas on January 7 is just a matter of the calendar. The current (world) is Gregorian, it is a new calendar (search the net about it). The Serbian Orthodox Church uses the old Julian calendar (search on the net), which is late compared to the Gregorian! After 1000 years, the difference is 14 days. According to the Julian calendar, January 7 is actually December 25 😊!!!
We are orthodox so Christmas is 7 January on orthodox calendar, like Russians and Greeks
Christmas in serbia is at 7.january ( ortodox Julian calendar )
Kosovo and Metohia holy serbian lands. Ever and Forever.
You must have found out by now but Serbia celebrates Christmas on the 7th because we traditionally use the Julian calendar which is because Serbians are Christian but a different type of Christian, orthodox Christianity, and orthodox Christianity uses an old fashioned calendar
January 7th is actually December 25th according to the old Julian calendar.
