Why would anyone support you channel? For Russian liberals like you Serbians were not brothers, but for ordinary people yes they are....your personal knowledge and feelings are exclusively yours. If you did not know nothing about Serbia, it s your problem and it does not mean that other Russian citizens do not know. When I explains former Yugoslavia, now Serbia, everyone knows very well about Belgrade and Serbia. So, it was just you and your "knowledge"....have a nice stay in Belgrade.
Ako mislite da sam Rus, napisacu par reči na srpskom. Nije istina da Rusi ne znaju za Srbiju! Kad im kažem bivša Jugoslavija, Beograd, a sada Srbija, svi vrlo dobro znaju ko smo i šta smo....

@@r2d2-gj3jo, she didn't say that Serbians are not brothers. Quite the contrary. The author is definitely quite fond of Serbians. And I am as well.
What was mentioned is the fact that it was not widely known before the Russo-Ukrainian war that the Serbs actually support Russians. Out of like, say, 300 people I communicated with in Russia in my home city, there was something like 2 who said "Ah, Serbia! A brother Nation". And, fck, most of them are not liberals! We don't have much of that stuff in Russia.
I think it is a great fail from the Russian government that they didn't make this information widespread (among many other things). That's just the fact. And author notes this fact. And it's really sad. Not knowing you have a brother somewhere is truly sad.

I cannot but strongly disagree with the observation that people in Serbia normally touch other people's children. It might be true in the country - not at all everywhere, or old neighbourhoods at the cities outskirts, mainly with old wives, but would be absolutely strange everywhere else.
Maybe some of the neighbours that she doesn't know have heard there are Russians around and they wanted to show that they are welcome there by being warm with her children, that is all.
It is such an exaggeration to say sth like that.

Is there any reason that some Greeks would have anything against Serbs? I only visited Greece once around 2009 (Athens, near Omonia square) and had a weird experience: a friend and me entered a small shop, and the lady working there was nice at first, but then asked where we're from. We said Serbia and she immediately became kinda scared and said 'Ah, sorry, I have to close for now, sorry' effectively shoing us out of there...we were confused but said ok and left. The time was like 15:42 or 12:17 (no idea but I remember I checked the time and it wasn't anything round, didn't make sense to have to close immediately)...This is one occasion and I really didn't spend much time in Greece, especially talking to local people, so don't worry I don't have any conclusions based on that one bad interaction, maybe it was one in a million for some reason but was bit weird. Anyway glad to hear what you said here :)

I am a Serb, who lives in Moscow and what was shock for me is that Russian portions are extremely small.
In restaurant, I always feel as cook steals half of my portion 😁
Also, have to add : Russians simply do not have such a sophisticated relationship with food. Food is not so important topic in Russian culture.
For me it was cultural shock to see in the restaurant this kind of scene: two or three people are at the table and waiter brings food to one of them. He eats his food and rest of the people waiting 20 additional minutes for waiter to bring food to others.
In other words they are not bringing food to all people at the table in the same time...and they do not see problem about it.
That shows that Russian do not perceive meal as important part of socializing.
On the other hand we live on Balkan which had so many different influences over centuries- Turkish, Hungarian, German etc.
We also have partially Mediterranean mentality.
    Food is important for us.
    We discuss food.
It is not possible to happen that waiter being portion to one person and that other one waits for his next 15 min...in Serbia that would be considered as rude. And guests would complain.
Eating together is considered as social event and opportunity for bonding, friendship etc.
Obviously in Russia is looked at more as...well just feeding time.
For us it is different :)

    • @SailorNom

Typically it is asked, if meals are to be carried to the table as-they-cooked, or all together. You have a choice, depending on a situation. It might me that 1 guy is very hungry and orders something simple and fast to cook as a pre-meal - there's no point to wait in such case.

As a Serb, yes we ARE NOT the same. We Serbs are much more simmilar to Greeks, Bulgarians, Romanians, Italians..etc.We are classic southern nation, with big Medditeranian and even eastern influence. There is too much geographical distance for us to be the same or simmilar. So, it is ok to be good with Russians, but not to be in love with them for no reason like Serbs making a mistake..

Dear Ksenija, the first thing on your list is not correct from my experience. There is a lot of Russians on Montenegrin coast, and something that shocked me was how they behaved towards children. One guy took my 2 years old son to his beach chair and hugged him, and kept kissing and squeesing him tightly. I was really shocked and uncomfortable about it, but I taught that's different culture, maybe it's normal among Russians, so I stayed cool. I think that it is too early to judge Serbs after only one month of your stay. If you didn't heared of us, that's your prob, because we learned at elementary school about almost every world country and nation, their demographic and economy. Hi Kseniya, Sounds like Serbia is a touch country, meaning they like to hug and kiss and shake hands, etc. America used to be like that but seems like it's less and less that way. American's seem like were in our own little bubbles now days. We're still friendly but it seems we got ourselves in such a damn hurry we have no time for even small talk with one another anymore. If you were shopping here in a store and had Daniel in the cart most people wouldn't even notice or pay any attention to you, maybe some older ladies might make a fuss over Daniel but most would just go about their business, oblivious to what's going on around them. When I was growing up, we used to know and visit with all our neighbors in the neighborhood, nowadays, we don't even know our neighbors names and we just wave to them if we see them outside. Sad really. I'm old school though, I will strike up conversations and love it when I meet a stranger and they take just a second to talk or at least exchange pleasantries. I think that's why there is a lot of infighting within' America nowadays, no one gets to know one another anymore, to see or even try to see other points of view. Sad.
Well, when it comes to meat I think most folks around the world like their meat warm, so I think Serbians are in the minority there. We do eat "cold cuts" in America, usually as a sandwich, like a ham and cheese on rye with mustard or mayo, something like that. I think I would take a pass on cold, fat, greasy, pig meat though.
I believe you are right when it comes to drinking in that no one comes close to Mother Russia. Every country has their share of drinkers, including America but Russia is well known as a country that consumes a lot of alcohol, especially Vodka. Maybe heavy drinking stems from the Soviet Union days, I don't know. Maybe it stems from being a depressed society? Maybe it's just tradition? It wouldn't surprise me that even more Russians have picked up or have increased their drinking since the events of February and I can't say as I can blame them.
I'm glad that Serbians and Russians seem to get along so well. You seem happier and relaxed there. It makes me happy that you, Vlad and Daniel are together and away from the troubles of Russia. I'm sure you still feel much sadness for what's going on in your homeland and in Ukraine. Many around the world are sadden too. God, why can't we just have some peace? With love and much respect to you and the whole family, Steve from Ohio.

    • @ProfessorXplain
      @ProfessorXplain Рік тому +4

Hello! We in Serbia love cold meat but only from spit roasters as usually it needs several hours to prepare and you have to make an reservation for that, so it usually is served cold. But we also love hot meat, for example from grill like hamburgers (we call them pljeskavica) or cevapcici (internationally famous), or beef, or fried meet where we have Becka (Vienna) snicla or Karadjordjeva snicla (Karadjordje was leader of Serbian uprising against Ottoman tyrani in 19 century).
Regarding drinking, northern Europeans, includin Russians, Poles, Finns, Swedes, or Irish and British people are more prone to drinking than southern Europeans, and even how and what they drink is different. In the European south we more appritiate enjoyment and drinks with more taste like rakija, uzo, mastika, metaxa, sangria, calvados, sambuca, grappa, campari,...while in the nort they drink mostly votka and whiskey.

I am Serbian living in Russia for 10 years and I can tell you that I agree with you 1000000% on everything.
The saddest thing is that if Serbian people knew how much Russians don’t care about Serbian-Russian friendship they would never treat Russians that well.
People would literally remove their kids away from my son because he spoke another language and they would always look at as with suspicion what are we doing here and what do we want from them. Nothing. I’ve just married a Russian man and we live in Russia. That’s it. My son got first friend only when he learned Russian very well and they were unable to understand that he is part Serbian.
I was treated really bad many times. I was asked why did I come to Russia? What were my intentions? If I’m a spy? 😂Why did I take Russian man, when Russia has a problem that they have more women than men and because of bad foreigners like me Russian women were forced to leave Russia and look for husband somewhere else. When it comes to cold meat, I think that it's easier on a stomach to eat pork fat cold. And also in Serbia, especially before, you had roasted pig only on holidays and big occasions like slava, and here, as you know, we like it polako so the celebrations last at least a whole day and often couple of days and it's impossible to keep it warm for so long...
When it comes to Russian relation to Serbia, you are kind of right, it definitely isn't at the same level but I know some people who worked in Russia and there are some similar stories, like taxi drivers in Moscow refusing to charge when they find out you are Serbia or free beers at a bar.
When it comes to kids, it's probably amplified because you are in small town and your kid is known as "that russian kid". But I do remember that when I was little it wasn't surprising if someone bought me a chocolate or something like that while standing in line at the store. But that's more of a small towns and villages thing, I doubt it happens much in Belgrade.

Serbia and Russia have similarities but they also have differences, this is the case among all Slavic countries and that is normal due to different historical circumstances and geographical location. What seems to me is that as far as some habits, ways of life, cultural and mental characteristics, etc. are concerned, Russians are in some ways similar to Scandinavian countries, Serbia and other South Slavic countries have a lot of similarities with Italy and Greece (especially seen in our famous "polako"), while Western Slavs have certain similarities with Germany, but regardless of that, all three Slavic groups have a lot of things that connect them. Water is drunk with rakija so as not to get drunk. Our rule is that you enjoy yourself while drinking, but that you have a limit so that you don't overdo it. We also have that jelly with meat, in our country it's called "pihtije". As for the cold meat, I think that usually just the roast meat (pečenje) is eaten cold, it's better for the stomach and it's tasty, plus there's a lot of it since it's usually eaten for some celebrations. Barbecue, steaks and other types of meat are usually eaten warm. As for Russian knowledge about Serbia, in my experience, I think it depends from Russian to Russian, in which part of Russia they are, etc. in my opinion, Ukrainian Russians and Crimean Russians have the greatest knowledge about Serbs and Serbia for many reasons, primarily some historical but also blood ties and maybe because they are a little closer geographically.

"polako" is more an attitude towards work, since in Serbia it is not worth stressing about it... Balkan people actually have a "temperament" and are very loud and can often seem agressive to a northener.
As for water with rakija, it's not true, you don't drink it to not get drunk, you drink it in order to not dehydrate, and to wash away the burning feeling.

I'm not surprised that Russian and Serbian love is not balanced out, it's pretty natural considering the history and size comparison. For example, lots of that love comes from Russia's help on multiple occasions: like fighting the Turks, World wars, or with respect to Kosovo. For a Russian in 19th century, Serbia was maybe just some land where soldiers were told to go and fight. For a Serb, Russia was a sister that helped with our liberation, and that sticks in collective memory. Etc. And due to us being so much smaller, we couldn't be of much help to Russians throughout the history.
In my opinion, all Slavs should do much better job at getting closer and backing each other. All Slavic countries would benefit from more brotherhood among our nations - and we are indeed distant cousins, which is also just cool!

From my perspective Slavic nations have very much in common. The differences could serve for enriching one another not to advocate infighting. And the common ground could make it actually easier to share.

Due to serious studing of history and geography is schools since we were kids, we know all the countries over the world pretty well at least some details.
and since Russia as important powerforce and Serbia were always on the same side, plus both slavic and ortodox Christians we like Russia by default.
we had rough history and we lost so many people in wars, that finnaly created our nations mentality.
we are very social and direct, smiling a lot compared to Polish, Russiand or Ucranians.
but that doesnt mean we are naive, anger we can produce is something I rarely saw with some other nations.. and not like italians e.g. we dont bleff, when Serbs are angty, there will be storm..
And what I like about us serbs, we are southerners but still slavs and tall, we are slavs but like mediteranians.
In sports and battles we are going till the end strong, but in peace we collapse because of lack of harmony.
also ortodox Christianity shaped us a lot, even today golabilaztion and beflre comunism damaged us...

I remember when a friend of mine told me her maiden name and it was very interesting name and I said where are you from?? And she said her family had come from Serbia. And I was like where is Serbia?? I don't usually use that many question marks in real life. But it was 1984 and Serbia was in Yugoslavia back then so that's why I had not heard of Serbia. I also had not heard of Latvia or Estonia, although I had heard of Lithuania. And Poland had been in the news a couple years before.
Ksenia (Not quite sure how to spell that) This was very interesting. I think in the US if you just walked up to people's children and started touching them, they would also get upset. There is this whole thing about strangers. Maybe that's why, I don't know. But I'm from New England and we tend to be very what would be the right word? Cold? We aren't outgoing and friendly I don't think. I mean I think we are eventually but not right off the bat. I used to ride the bus in Boston and there were lots and lots of people and all of the people from... I think they were from Vietnam maybe, definitely somewhere in Asia, they were all chatting away. And you could not hear a single American voice. Because the Americans were not talking to each other. And this was long before we had cell phones obviously. Oh it was in the '80s I didn't say that. Sorry we didn't have cell phones. We might not even have had books. We just didn't talk to each other. There was one man who talked to other people on the bus and if it wasn't for him I wouldn't have had a place to live when my parents moved to Florida. He knew another girl on the bus who was looking for a roommate and he matched us up and I am thankful. Even though we really didn't get along very well. And we only lived together for 6 months and after 2 weeks of living with her she moved to another more expensive apartment that I couldn't afford to live in but I had to go with her because I didn't have any place else. And then she just kept raising my half of the rent. But also when I offered her the towels my mother gave me she looked at me and she said "the bathroom is yellow!" So that wasn't necessary. And she really hated Puerto Rican people. But I'm Puerto Rican. I'm not quite as Irish as she was and I can't remember her last name and it was 40 years ago. But that was today's stream of consciousness. It probably wasn't the first ;-)

I'll try to clarify this whole mess.
At this moment, there are the most foreigners in Serbia in our history. We have never had the opportunity for people to come to us and want to start new lives here. We usually leave here and start a new life somewhere in other countries, usually the EU and to a lesser extent the USA.
The migrant crisis from the Middle East is once again at its peak. The arrival of Russians and Ukrainians, primarily Russians, is also at its peak. In addition to all that, Serbia is a free visa for citizens of India and certain African countries that do not recognize Kosovo. This is our concession to those countries.
Serbs are hospitable people. Everyone is welcome here, especially in a situation where we have the problem of migration of our people to other countries. All things considered, I feel very sorry for the whole situation you are exposed to. This is not a true picture of our people and our attitude towards Russians or any foreigner. You turned out to be the sacrificial lamb of the Serbian media. It is a great shame.

Serbia and Russia have similarities but we also have differences, this is the case among all Slavic countries and that is normal due to different historical circumstances and geographical location. As for Russian knowledge about Serbia, I agree that there is a difference between liberals (those who try to be more western and are ashamed and reject their own culture) and those who are more traditional and patriotic. In my experience, I think it depends from Russian to Russian, in which part of Russia they are, etc. in my opinion, Ukrainian Russians and Crimean Russians have the greatest knowledge about Serbs and Serbia for many reasons, primarily some historical but also blood ties and maybe because they are a little closer geographically, but also Russians from St. Petersburg and perhaps more southern parts of Russia. It's interesting that this girl speaks pretty good English for a Russian girl since they have a very distinct accent when they speak English, as if she lived in the west and not in Russia.
