I remeber being I was 11 or 12 and I went to the washing machine tour. Kim saw me after the show and invited me into their tour bus. She, Thurston and the rest of the band ordered me pizza and had me hang out with them for about an hour or 2. They were so nice! Kim gave me her email and was so blown away at how young I was and really into their music. I was too shy to email her, but it was one of the greatest nights of my life!!
My girlfriend bought me this album in an attempt to lift my spirits when my best friend and bandmate died suddenly of a brain haemorrhage, bless her. This song seemed to encapsulate best how I felt about him, rest in peace brother.
Mark, Sending all the love and healing to you and all who knew your friend. Holy father in heaven, PALEEESE bring Sonic Youth back to us!!? This band is -timeless! They all have their own things going, which I respect. However, this band and the ethereal paradigm shifting music they channeled in to my soul has never and will never been bested! When a group of artist can change your state of consciousness, without the need of narcotics, it is something incredibly special and important. There has never been another bands like Sonic Youth and I honestly don’t think there ever will be again! Thank you Kim, Thurston, Steve and Lee!! Thank you for the mind blowing memories and for opening my mind and soul to your other worldly and incredibly beautiful music and art! ❤
This song takes me back to my freshman year in high school. After getting high I was hanging out with my girlfriend late one evening in my room and I remember hearing this song playing in the background on 107.5 The Buzz. Good times, man! Good times!
I heard this song the first time on the local college radio station. I recorded it on cassette tape. The first time hearing it was a memory I still have that's crystal clear. I was 14 just sitting my small bedroom getting ready to go stay the night with my friend across town and this came on, the long version and I sat and listened to the entire thing.
ya but Thurston gave me a nice tip and was understanding. I didn't have the never to tell him my band was on a compilation with his side project sons of lee marvin.carlsmeric
Who hasn't screwed up Sonic Youth's breakfast order at one point on another. One time My Bloody Valentine asked me for hashbrowns and, silly ol' me, I stabbed Kevin Shields in the neck with a spork! Ah, they were nice about it.
This video was done by 5 different directors (including Spike Jonze), hence the many variations of it. Would love to know who the other 4 directors were!
Saw them play in 1995 San Jose Almost Acoustic Christmas, they ended with this song, the stage turned around as if they were done! They continued ripping on for another 20 minutes while the impatient young crowd booed, so funny, they are classic.
I personally prefer the 19-minute version (even better, the 25-minute one from The Destroyed Room). The solo is so much longer and better. Still, a fantastic song.
I'm getting this Bud Light ad every few songs on this playlist and it's got this super cheesy club techno beat which is just SO JARRING after a few great Sonic Youth songs in a row. They seriously have to change that ad, my brain is melting.
Just started trying out this band. Schizophrenia and expressway to your skull were good, but none of them packed quite as much as this song. This is what i was looking for
You should check out bands like My Bloody Valentines, Cranes, Cocteau Twins & Slowdive. Most of their songs are as epic as The Diamond Sea with a lot more atmosphere, reverb & feedback.
Janez bekš Check out the 19 minutes version in the actual album or even try the 25 minute alternate version one from the destroyed room, you will be even more mesmerised.
i saw them in Manila, together with Foo fighters and Beastie boys, and when they performed the power was cut many times, probably because of their tower full of guitar effects - good times :)
So glad you stumbled across this amazing track. ...I remember being 14 and hearing it for the first time. It has been a favorite since. ...it wasn't played on the main radio station in Houston, but they had a weekly show Sunday nights at 10 where they played "indie" stuff, hipster music. I would record the songs i liked onto my Tape Recorder, and would let my friends listen to it. It was a school night so mostly everybody I knew were in bed. Thank God I wasn't. ..I just turned 40 a few wks ago. You kids rock on. Music makes it a beautiful life❤️🤘
Same here, yet I’ve been listening to Sonic Youth since the late 90s. I noticed this single on RateYourMusic and that it was their second-most rated single after Teen Age Riot so I decided to check it out. Wish I’d listened to more SY than just their albums from the 80s and early 90s!
This song reminds me the love of my life.. she used to sing this song all the time. It was 13 years ago.. listen to this right know at 24… i cant even explain. I love her so much it hurts. “You never never know how close you came” Love you, L
1994. Poland. Poznan City. I'm looking for any Sonic Youth album. And I found small something like store? And they sell tapes! And there is "Washing Machine", Sonic Youth. I'm 19 years old. 30 years ago. Before that I only knew one album ("Experimental...") and few songs...
I know how you feel bro. It's the same with me but like cassl14 said, Better late than never! Sonic Youth is one of those groups that everyone has to hear about.
…….. It is as beautiful as the retractability of the talons of rapacious birds or as the uncertainty of muscular movements in wounds of the soft tissues of the posterior cervical region.

Ha colaborado en numerosos proyectos musicales y ha grabado más de una decena de discos solistas, además es el fundador de la compañía discográfica Ecstatic Peace!.
Spike Jonze edited together live footage to make this video because SY had no money for a real video. A nice Spike touch: the names of where they are playing are all made up. Except the Capitol Center because Spike grew up in MD.
Damn they played at the Capital Center and its in the video! It was demolished in 2002 and they have a large shopping center there now but I will always think of this when i past it by from now on...
This is one of those songs that you can just turn out the lights, lay down and close your eyes and just let your mind drift away.
Thank Goodness 💕
Especially the long album version

Time takes its crazy toll
And how does your mirror grow?
You better watch yourself when you jump into it
'Cause the mirror's gonna steal your soul
I wonder how it came to be my friend
That someone just like you has come again
You'll never, never know how close you came
Until you fall in love with the diamond rain
Throw all his trash away
Look out, he's here to stay
Your mirror's gonna crack when he breaks into it
And you'll never, never be the same
Look into his eyes and you can see
Why all the little kids are dressed in dreams
I wonder how he's gonna make it back
When he sees that you just know it's make belief
Blood crystallized as sand
And now I hope you'll understand
You reflected into his looking glass soul
And now the mirror is your only friend
Look into his eyes and you will see
That men are not alone on the diamond sea
Sail into the heart of the lonely storm
And tell her that you'll love her eternally
Time takes its crazy toll
Mirror fallin' off the wall
You better look out for the looking glass girl
'Cause she's gonna take you for a fall
Look into his eyes and you shall see
Why everything is quiet and nothing's free
I wonder how he's gonna make her smile
When love is running wild on the diamond sea

One of the most rubbish things about my life is that I will never see Pantera and probably not Sonic Youth play live.
s695579 Saw them five times. A great live band.
s695579 Saw them at Lollapalooza in 95. The sad thing is that I didn't really get into them until a few years later and never got to see them again.
