I do totally agree that paper is the most important thing in watercolour! good papers will def make your life a lot easier! Love your vid as always! feels good to have the same thought as my fav artist!

Time passes. Arches used up. I go to buy more paper, recoil at price, try a cheaper brand.... Yowza. SO much worse experience. Try Arches!

Bad paper can make you think you're bad at painting when you're not. It's so worth it to get the right paper. And I have this huge array of brushes and I use the same two brushes for pretty much everything.
Common pencil smudge tip: if you don't want to use a kneaded eraser to lighten the lines much do a light wash with clean water over the graphite and let it dry. Then once you apply watercolor the graphite is sealed and locked into the paper
@@samliphied I've not had the problem but it could be the pencils I'm using, I use a very light hand and large lightly damp brush that I tap out on a sponge and microfiber cloth (or you can get a staining sponge which I also use instead at times) to make sure it hasn't absorbed too much water, as I don't have a spray bottle that would probably be easier. Also a way to pick up water like paper towels or shop towels preferably (In case any water runs) but I always seal my edges with masking tape, I keep it on flat surface until I start painting with colors to make sure the water doesn't run. When I seal graphite I like to use hair spray but I haven't tried that on watercolor paper or tested how watercolors interact with hairspray so I don't recommend that, use clear wax (or use a white crayon) over the lines if anything else.
@@kelogsloops painting over the lines? Random drops of paint or water in places you didn't want them? Accidentally starting too dark? Cauliflowers? Great recommendations! For paper I like to look for big (huge) sheets at the store and cut them to size. That's most of the time much cheaper than blocks or pads! That way I can try different papers too without buying a block/pad for 30+ euros but one or two sheets at a time.
I was extremely blessed when I started at a visual arts focused high school and my dad insisted that if I was to buy a proper watercolour palette, I should get a high standard one. He covered the cost of the Schmincke 18 half pan set when I was 16 for my birthday and I am so grateful for it every day as I still use them, nowadays with much more skill. I agree with everything here, when starting out it is good to get a slightly cheaper set for practice but I also agree that the best brands and the highest price ones are still also worth it. I use Mixed Media paper most often and it is not good for watercolour... But I struggle doing clean lines on watercolour paper. Just gotta get more practice in on it.
Thanks for this! This video comes at such a perfect time for me, as I have been attempting watercolor illustrations for the first time in about 8 years 😅 As a beginner, I can attest that going from cheap watercolor paper to Arches paper has made a huge difference for me!
Cool! I just got started learning watercolor because my digital pen broke. It was nice to hear that such an influential watercolor artist like you learned digital art before watercolor as well! :)
I've been doing watercolor for two years and never watch tutorials.. this is a sign!!! ( I don't know why, but I always just learned by trial and error )
Another thing to keep in mind for the difference between hot press and cold press: hot press dries faster and it's really great for gradients especially since it's a smooth paper, it doesn't like having too many layers and you really have to act fast! Cold press meanwhile takes time to dry, it's a much slower process and it loves layers a lot more but there is the slight grain texture. So keep that in mind while grabbing paper! (Also, most cellulose papers or papers that say thin grain/ grain, those are always cold press or at least 95% of the time. If it says smooth grain then usually it's hot press but it's rare to find that in cellulose papers so yeah!)
You're right. You don't have to have expensive materials to get better at painting. Practice and experience will help you improve your skills. To be honest, here in the Philippines, Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor sets are moderately expensive.
