I special ordered my 2000 F350 with a 6 sp manual and 7.3 PS in 2000 for $26K. Its a 4X4 XLT not Lariat and I had 5" straight exhaust, chipped and a Garret Power Master turbo and cold air swapped. Love the truck and with the 6 SP trans I easy get 20+ mpg, but usually pulling trailers.
Really appreciate this vid. In the market for a work truck and will drive quite a bit for the job. Thank you for taking the time to make this. I hope there’s more vids like this out there!
I found a nice 99 F 250 7.3 4x4 super cab short bed last November. l drive rural, no city and no highway, I consistently get 17 mpg on the button. I am easy on the gas pedal 75% of the time, cruise in the 60 mph zone. The occasional stomp on the gas just because it is damn fun to hear that roar bellowing out of the 4 inch exhaust. Hope you find a nice one 👍
Charlie, would love to see more old cars tested, see if the other staff at daily motor are willing to donate their cars. I knew someone 20 years ago that had the 99 f series with the v10, and said he averaged 9mpg. So under this test that would get about 13mpg highway.
I have a 2003 7.3 f250 xlt, I did some mpg testing and found that if you keep the tac at or below 1800 rpm, I get 19 mpg but if I go 70 mph it drops to 16mpg. and found out that on the oil dipstick keep it about 3/16" to 1/4" below the full mark it gets 20mpg, I wish I had bought the lariat with the mpg gauge!
MPH is everything in these trucks for MPG. I never run faster than the line between 65 and 70 in my 2003 7.3 and I always get 17.5MPG in my F350. I commute 250 miles around DC on I95 each week and always refill around 16-17 gallons in a 40 gallon tank.
Just got done with a 400 mile trip in a 99 F250 ext cab 2wd w/ 326k. Mostly 60-65 mph driving, mixed with stop and go for a while and some 70-75mph. Managed to get right between 21-23mpg average. Only burned 8 -8.5 gallons of fuel for the 187 miles up there first. I run hotshot EDT at every fill up, I believe it helps these monsters quite a bit.
I could be wrong about this but I think all the 2 wheel drive super duty trucks had the 38 gallon fuel tank and the 29 gallon was in the 4X4 trucks because the transfer case and front driveshaft took up space and a 38 gallon tank wouldn't fit
I have had 3 7.3s my first was 1992 it got the best mileage an easy 25mph as long as not over 64mph. But my 1999 tubo get average 12mpg i still will buy another one. They are getting harder to find.
I'd say if you take off the topper, cruised at 65mph and used an additive in your fuel/oil. You would be at 20mpg pretty easily. If not a headwind or anything.
@rustyshackleford7265 toppers actually decrease mpg, and tailgates don't really create drag actually. I have seen a few other videos on people experimenting mpg with and without toppers on.
Add some injector, turbo, and intake exhaust upgrades and I know guys getting 20+ Apparently certain tunes also do really well but idk anything about them.
I rock an 02 7.3 Lariat Crew cab dually 4x4 through the winter months and for hauling. I usually get around 14 with my mostly back road driving. They are less powerful than the modern options for sure but they are dang near bullet proof and will haul well overall. I just love it.
The 7.3L has no DPF, SCR, no complex emissions systems, nothing. Some had cats, but that isn't a big deal. Basically, as long as it doesn't smoke and isn't modified, it will pass any emissions test.
What kinda fan boy corn ball buys a 7.3 Powerstroke for fuel economy 😂 I drive my 7.3s for love and tons of horsepower after proper love and thousands and thousands of dollars of engine work ;) 💪 just take them to the junk yard and leave them for the guys like me that live for them .
Charlie, While the longevity of the truck and mpg are quite impressive, the same cannot be said for the hideous plume of heinous particulates that follow this pre-DEF Diesel down the road.🤨
electric vehicles through 24 years will be on the dump, batteries pollute earth before their production and after. This vehicle can work many more times
My 02. 7.3 4 door dually rear wheel drive gets 19.5 empty highway 12.5 loaded and empty combined 3 car hauler local hauling all stock except 6 position that I keep on #5 or 100 extra horsepower add.
Got to love the rumble of a 7.3

I had a '97 F250 4x4 7.3 for 22 years. Unladen norm was a consistent 18MPG / 15-16MPG climbing elevation / 22-25MPG descending elevation.
Beautiful truck! I love the sound of that 7.3🙏🏻

Thanks! I'd love to do more on the used vehicles, but not many people are cool with me putting 100 miles on their car lol. Good luck

5:45 I adjusted the steering box on my E99 F-350 to tighten up the steering.

The lariat gauges aren’t accurate
If your really concerned about economy you can always put a gear vendors on it giving you 8 gears and a much taller overdrive
badass truck. DO NOT sell it.

This is my dream truck for sure. Currently looking on the market for one.
If you like this one, shoot me an email, we might be able to work out a deal! I've done some improvements since this video. charlie@thedailymotor.com

So crazy for such a large truck. Just unfortunate diesel costs more than regular unleaded.

How do these ride on the highway for long periods? Looking at buying 1 to take some long road trips in.
If it was a single cab standard bed with right street tires and a tune and 6 speed manual I can see it getting 24mpg easily
My 2000 6 speed 2wd super cab short bed can get that at 65mph with street tires a engine tune and a wicked wheel on the turbo easily
Get the RedHead steering box, huge improvement
$38,000 in 1999 is like $70,000 today, lol a new diesel runs for about $91,000 today crazyyy

Beautiful truck😊
They started the 7.3 power stroke was made from mid 1994 to 2093 before that was the 7.3 idi

Topper helps mpg. No drag from the tailgate
@rustyshackleford7265 toppers actually decrease mpg, and tailgates don't really create drag actually. I have seen a few other videos on people experimenting mpg with and without toppers on.
Hey do you know how much it would cost to swap out the dashboard on 7.3 and to change it to a 08 dashboard? Edit: nice truck i really like it!
The same MPG as a 2021 F-150 Raptor.
Good truck ! Diesel trucks are very efficient. EPA is unconstitutional and sucks !
I've gotten as high as 20 mpg with my 2003 F 350 running at 75 extra horsepower with a T-6 tuner....
Hey Charlie - I'm wondering what app you're using on the iPhone when you film the fuel economy tests for the MPH & the distance travelled.
I used a spare Android phone for this one. When I use the iPhone, I use a generic app just called Speedometer.
@@DailyMotor Thanks.
I get about 13 with mine. 15 at best. It’s on 35’s though
Add some injector, turbo, and intake exhaust upgrades and I know guys getting 20+
Apparently certain tunes also do really well but idk anything about them.
And its 2wd that helps
I really wanted a diesel but is it worth the extra cost in fuel? Plus diesels take more oil, and require a little more maintenance.
Yeah diesel isn't really worth it in the US unless you tow a lot or do a lot of highway miles.

which tow mirrors are those? Does it work with the stock power feature?
I believe they're newer Ford mirrors, and yes they do
People don’t relise how big these pick ups are
It will be a major pain to deal with California emissions standards with this truck, which are the most stringent in the world!
Already passed, no problem!
The 7.3L has no DPF, SCR, no complex emissions systems, nothing. Some had cats, but that isn't a big deal. Basically, as long as it doesn't smoke and isn't modified, it will pass any emissions test.

Who told you that 1999 was the first year for that motor? I had that motor in my 1995.
First year for this version of the 7.3
02:03 looks like a 2x4?
it weighs about 8 not 6 lol
I actually had to weigh it for the DMV, it was just over 6
@@DailyMotor no shit? I did see after I commented it was 2wd not 4, mine came in at 8000 but it’s 4x4
Damn, that's crazy, I wonder where that difference is. Or maybe one of our weigh stations was way outta spec :P@@connorn6378
I just double checked, it was actually 6900 lbs, so closer to yours
i got very ddizzy
Charlie, While the longevity of the truck and mpg are quite impressive, the same cannot be said for the hideous plume of heinous particulates that follow this pre-DEF Diesel down the road.🤨
DEFs cause more harm to the environment on small trucks like this than good on semitrucks and on ships and trains is where they should be.
Get out the comments section kid
Got your flame suit on today, RLH? You're just salty I forgot to include the Tach Shot® in this one, even though I did shoot it. ;)

My 2001 f2shity 7.tree gets 25 mpg...it's all about tuning
What’s the best time for fuel economy. I can’t get better then 16 going 70-75 on the highway
How did you tune it???
@@ojpimpson3343 Probably got a pre turned device or brought it to a real shop that does that stuff
