I got my Dreamcast on 9/9/99 with Sonic Adventure for its launch and got a free bright orange Dreamcast shirt with it that I proudly wore to school on a regular basis. It was the first pre-order I ever made. I can’t begin to describe the amazing memories that I have with that system in its early years, and I still enjoy going back to it every now and again. The Dreamcast was way ahead of its time and sadly didn’t get the recognition it deserved back in the day, but it’s good to see it get appreciated more nowadays.
Same
Yep, same - 14 Oct 99 here in the UK
I remember going to funco land on 9/9/99 with my friend cuz he was picking up FF VIII and there were all these older teen ages and guys in their 20s who I came to find out were there getting dreamcast
Oh jeez
I hated that Sonic Game
I convinced my uncle to get it for me on launch. I just wanted it for fighting games. I think I only got Soul Calibur 2 at launch.
If it weren't for this console I'd have never met my husband, we met over Phantasy Star Online. It's such a great console that in my opinion was too ahead of it's time in regards to it's online capability.
Hope you're still playing such games with them.
You're not wrong as far as being ahead of its time...online wise. My cousin used to play online with his dreamcast.
I was so upset when the dream ended. I was a teenager at the time and didn't understand how profit and loss worked. RIP Dreamcast you gave me two of the best years of my life.
Two years? Why didn’t you bother to import games? Our local EB imported games like Shenmue 2 and that region breaking boot disc. My Dreamcast had another 2 years of gaming thanks to importing.
@@worldofretrogameplay6963 Did you miss the bit about being a teenager?
@@ryanmckenzie7149 when i was a teenager i had no clue about any of that shit. just a normal teen trying to enjoy some sega.
I remember when ps2 displays hit stores I was so stubborn then that when everyone lined up for ps2 I always ran to the Dreamcast display because I didn’t want to believe the hype.
On the bright side, the Dreamcast died so the Xbox could live.
It's a shame the Dreamcast was cut so short. I would have liked to have seen just how far it could have been pushed graphically if it managed to survive the entire generation. The difference between early PS2 and late PS2 games is massive.
However the sega poor management during the 90s destroyed any chance of a long dreamcast lifespand. I blamed the genesis upgraded add-ons especially releasing them in sensitive market regions like EU and at times NA. Plus, rushing out the saturn so early in NA/EU and mismanagement for the System including game gear battery issues.
I always wonder what 3rd party titles it could have ran later into its lifespan, always thought it not having ea backing hurt it
@@maroon9273 it's true.. I myself had lost faith in Sega by the mid late 90s. At first Sega 32X blew my mind as it was the first 32 bit 3D experience I saw in the home. My neighbor had it, and we both had Sega Channel for our beloved GENESIS, which appeared to be the God machine.
Then Sega pulled the plug prematurely, 32X was cool to us one day and canceled the next. Still on store shelves yet announced as outdated by Sega themselves. Sega made it die in less than a year.
Our Genesis which seemed to be in its prime then die the next day.
They made a fool out of their costomers, so no one wanted Saturn.
Only a couple friends had one but only after it hit the bargain bin.
When I first heard about Dreamcast I had Zero interest and thought waiting for PS2 was the smart move.
It's only in Retrospect do I give Sega love for its systems after Genesis.
The Saturn and Dreamcast are great fun, but when they were new I was focused on PS1 and N64, then PS2 and never planned on going back to Sega.
Shenmue is a good glimpse of the direction it could go in graphically. it wouldn't have been able to run JSFR, but i think it could hold its own against ps2
Most of the differences between early and late PS2 game are due to this time around, it was Sony's turn to pull out a "Saturn-like" horrendously complicated to program for console: with custom core galore in it's "Emotion" chipset (CPU, 2xVPU, IPU, etc.)
(And got none wiser and turned up complexity of the platform up to eleven with the PS3 and its Cell).
This kind of beast are complex to master.
Contrast this with the Dreamcast: SEGA learned its lesson from the PS vs Saturn era, and went for a much more straight forward PC-like architecture a risc CPU with SIMD (a SH4), a GPU with good performance (PowerVR) and an optical disc on a boring IDE-like bus.
Improving the graphics on a Dreamcast doesn't as much require finding the thin line between mastering insane architecture and ending up in an asylium, as it requires good creative and design choice that fit within the possibility of the hardware. i.e.: the difference between "repurposing the IOP for a few extra computation to shave of a little bit perf" - "decide what looks the best on a GPU that gives N million poly/sec and has Tile-Based Deffered Rendering (=Hidden Surface Removal for free)".
I had never had more fun with a failed console than I did my sega dreamcast. It'll live on forever in my gaming memories. A true underdog of a console if there ever was one.
Sega's failure to include DVD support was a huge hit to the perception of the Dreamcast in the West. So many kids in the West could make the strong case to buy a PS2 because it provided a DVD player for the household when they were so rare, and also make your kid happy at the same time.
That really was the killer app of the PS2!
In 1998 DVD was even rarer.
@@fungo6631 true, at that time it was less clear how good of an idea it would've been.
What the hell was Sega thinking not going with DVDs? Did they learn NOTHING from the format war between VHS and Betamax? THE MARKET DOES NOT TOLERATE MULTIPLE FORMATS!
I'm not sure if that is accurate. I heard that might have been a thing in Japan, but in the US people really didn't care if it had DVD support or not. Maybe Europe?
I loved my Dreamcast. It was SUCH an amazing system.
It really was!
I remember how my father bought the Dreamcast. I was 6 at the time. My father told me it is the best console ever made and I could play it. I had so much fun with it. Then one day my father told me that Sega gave up. I remember how sad I was. These are my childhood Dreamcast memories. In 2009 I bought my own Dreamcast console. It was also the first console I bought with my own money. Now I love all consoles made by Sega
The Dreamcast will always have a special place in my heart. It was the first home console to truly deliver arcade quality graphics with almost perfect home ports. At the time I couldn't believe I had Model 3 quality graphics at home for only $199. Games like House of the Dead 2, Crazy Taxi, Sega Bass Fishing, Soul Calibur, Power Stone, Sonic Adventure, NBA 2K, Resident Evil Code Veronica to name a few blew my mind. Of course I later got a PS2, GameCube and Xbox but in the year 1999 and 2000 the Dreamcast kickstarted "next-gen" and gave me many hours of joy.
Such a great console. It’s light didn’t burn for long but it burnt brightly.
It was the best console of all time. I had mine one day after the launch, and I was sure the Dreamcast will be a huge success or even become the market leader, but it came totally different than I thought. So sad story.
In terms of biggest graphical jump from previous generation yes it is the best of all time. I still remember how in awe I was playing Soul Caliber Christmas morning at how fluid and beautiful it was.
@@MonkeyPunchZPoker Yes that was an amazing graphical jump. Soul Calibur was very impressive, also Sonic Adventure and Shenmue looked u believable for me, while my friends still played Playstation 1 and Nintendo 64 at the same time.
It didn't play DVDs. That's what made me buy a PS2 instead of a Sega.
14:46 - Given the success of the Saturn in Japan, I always did wonder if it would have been better to launch the DC in the US or PAL territories first and Japan later, though it seems the built up launch library did wonders for the US, so perhaps not.
A real shame about the Fall of the fantastic Dreamcast, particularly given few of the causes of it's demise were by decisions with the system. Interesting to learn of the connection it has to NEC though; that was completely new news to me.
Aaaah soulcalibur, what a great souvenir ! And after that Dead Or Alive 2, Shenmue 1&2...
9 9 99 will always be remembered as dreamcast day
Sega is like Oasis for that short time in the 90s they were the biggest thing ever. But only for that short time. The Saturn was SEGAs Be Here Now album.
Great video!! I love and play with my dreamcast to this day, and i own it since Dec 29th 2001. It gave me my best gaming moments in life, despite being discontinued. Cheers from Colombia, South America!
My first game was Sonic Adventure and my last was Alone in the Dark. I still love my Dreamcast. I bought two eventually and have all colors of the VMU’s. I have mine hooked up through a computer monitor and it looks amazing. Will always remain my favorite Sega console.
Finally! I lov SEGA and I am a big fan of the gaming company. My favorite consoles are all the SEGA consoles, but definatley the Dreamcast. I find myself playing it almost every day and even got rid of my PS5 to get a Lot of 110 games for off eBay. The guy and I traded and one of the gaes that caught my eye is Napple Tale: Arsia in Daydream. it's a 2.5D platformer, but goes full 3D in certain areas and around the hub world area. It's by the team who made Sonic games a 1st party game and it's awesome, but it's in Japanese so I burned a copy of the game and modded English patch and now the game is in full English.
Finally, your "gracious living" tagline gets to be said with sincerity rather than sarcasm
I borrowed a friends Dreamcast in 2001 and loved it so much I asked my parents to get it for me for Christmas.
When they went into Toys R Us and all they saw was PS2, that’s what I got. 🤣
They cut the Dreamcast off so early, that people like me couldn’t buy one when they discovered it.
Had they lasting another 6 months GTA 3 could have been a Dreamcast exclusive
I have still nightmares of the fall. As a child I owned one, with Shen Mue, Grandia, sky and some nice arcade games.. but the feeling that I have something Death was never cool. But it was mysterious .. hard to explain. With the Dreamcast I also raised and rised as a gamer, cauze a classic RPG like Grandia for 15-16 years old was not so easy. Even Shen Mue with bad English skills. But this games had magic..
I still love this console. It was a very special period of my life, I will never forget the joy it brought me when I was in school.
I used to rent the Dreamcast from a video store so I could play Virtua Fighter 3tb. I was then kicked out of a retailer for playing SoulCalibur too much. The Dreamcast was so special to me, even though I sadly never got to own one.
Lady decade, a daily viewing necessity for gracious living. 🌹 Well done churning out content this consistent and persistently! 🌟
The Dreamcast had too great a library to be considered a failure.
Everyone didnt like arcade style games especially by that time when adventure 8+ hour games were available we kept playing the ps1 until the ps2 came only a small few people had a dream cast but every owned a ps2 and I mean everyone that's says alot coming from a poor neighborhood
i always say Dreamcast, even to this day, has the highest ratio of great games to shit. I havent done the math per se, but i would put thr # betwern 8:1 and 12:1 (8 to 12 great games for each shit title)
@@rockfresh1993 yeah, all these sheep gamers flocked to the ps2 because they lacked style and taste
@@rockfresh1993 Well yeah, the lifetime sales of the PS2(best selling console ever) show that a lot of people bought them.
The Dreamcast was more than arcade titles though, even though that was a pillar of the console:
-It had RPGs: Grandia 2, Skies of Arcadia, Time Stalkers, Phantasy Star Online
-driving/racing games: Ferrari F355 Challenge, Daytona USA, Sega Rally Championship 2, Test Drive Le Mans 24 Hours, Crazy Taxi 1 and 2, Metropolis Street Racer (precursor to the Project Gotham Racing series)...
-Fighting games: Virtua Fighter 3TB, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive 2, Street Fighter 3, Marvel vs Capcom2, SNK vs Capcom, King of Fighters Millennium, Garou Mark of the Wolves, Power Stone, Guilty Gears X, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure...
-Survival horror- Resident Evil 2/3/Code Veronica, Blue Stinger, House of the Dead, D2, Zombie Revenge
-Arena shooters: Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament, Outtriggers, Spawn: Into the Demon's Hand, Heavy Metal:Geomatrix, Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram
-Action/Adventure: Sonic Adventure, Soul Reaver, MDK 2, Rayman 2, Soul Fighter, Sword of the Beserk, Dino Crisis
-Sega unique titles/weirdness: Space Channel 5, Jet Set Radio, Shenmue, Seaman, Samba de Amigo,
-Sports: 2K series (NFL, NBA, World Series Baseball), Virtua Tennis, Virtua Striker...
All of this and more in the short 2 years + that it was on the market.
@@rockfresh1993 wow i had a stroke just by reading that
I remember that it seemed that only my mates with part-time jobs or very generous parents who could afford the Dreamcast. Loads of us wanted one, but most of us were still content either rinsing Goldeneye on the 64 or smashing WWF games with the multi-tap on the PS1.
Great info, a lot of stuff I didn't know.
Such a shame that it was cut short.
I'll always love my Segasports Edition black Dreamcast! Don't care much for sports games, but it's allowed me to have all black (or dark gray) consoles apart from my NES.
Sega Saturn basically was trying to fight Nintendo's "silicon graphics" instead of the new 3D trend.
They released the Dreamcast too soon compared to the PS2 and even the GameCube.
Fun facts: If your Dreamcast's swirl is red, then you have the USA model. If your Dreamcast's swirl is blue, then you have the PAL region model. And your Dreamcast's swirl is orange, then you have the Japanese model.
I remember when I got my DC, the game was over for Sega and here in the UK they were just getting rid of stock. There was a phone number you could ring for their warehouse here, I thought ok i'll try it. Rang up got a boxed DC, keyboards, light guns, the VCU (think thats it) as well as games might of got a mouse. I also remember the boxed DC never turning up so I got my money back (£50) then a month later a deliver man comes to my house asking is this "my house, it doesn't have a number" and he handed over the DC. So it still sits to this day on my shelf. My free mint condition boxed Dreamcast.
I was sold on the Dreamcast by Soul Calibur and Crazy Taxi. There were also a lot of other wonderful games - the DC version of Rush 2049 has these amazing battle and stunt modes which really make it a whole new game.
I also had a PS2, but honestly it mostly got used as a DVD player. There were so many PS2 games, but none of the ones I got were as fun as the Dreamcast games.
And the graphics on PS2 wasn't as good either (lack of VGA output, very little 480p or 1080i support). But honestly the difference wasn't a big deal to me. The PS2 generally did 60fps, like the Dreamcast, so the smoothness of gameplay was pretty much the same.
I guess the real shame about the Dreamcast is that Sega released it. If the same hardware had been released by Sony or Nintendo or even Microsoft instead? Then we could have enjoyed the silky smooth 60fps VGA graphics for longer, with more games. A lot of fun third party games like Soul Calibur or Rush 2049 could have made its way onto the system regardless of who had released it. EA wouldn't have snubbed it.
Conversely, if Sega had released something similar to the PS2, with Saturn backwards compatibility, DVD player, difficult to program hardware, and limited 480p support? Obviously it would have failed hard, but we could shake our heads in amusement ... "Did Sega learn nothing from the Saturn?"
I got mine by the end of 2000, and just because I couldn’t find a PS2 in the shelf, but later I felt so fortunate to get it, to this day I still think it is an amazing system, a real shame it failed because of previous Sega mistakes.
The Dream(cast) still lives in our (Sega fans) heart!
Got my Dreamcast on 9-9-99. The Dreamcast is one of my favorite consoles of all time. I didn’t get a PS2 until GTA 3 came out, but even to this day I prefer the Dreamcast to the PS2.
Just two quick points I'd like to raise regarding this video. When Sony was hyping up the PS2 during its pre-launch, Sony claimed that it could do in real time what Silicon Graphic workstations couldn't do, meaning you'd be getting movie quality CGI rendered real time on the PS2. Sony also falsely claimed that their console could manipulate 75,000,000 polygons in real time. And during its E3 presentation in 2001, Sony showed pre-rendered footage from its upcoming games, claiming that the graphics were what the PS2 would generate in real time. Sure, it could play pre-rendered cut scenes in real time, but it was promoted as being real time game play. Yet Dreamcast games such as Ferrari 355 Challenge, Soul Calibur, Virtua On 2, Sega's 2K sports games, Virtua Fighter 3, Shenmue, and others at least matched the best looking PS2 games developed in its first two years on the market. Sega didn't lose to the power of the PS2, but to the power of Sony's hype. (Sony also claimed that its "Emotion Engine" processor from the PS3 would overtake AMD and Intel in the PC CPU market, because the Emotion Engine was just that powerful.)
And regarding the "failure of the Sega CD", what console peripheral wouldn't count as a failure? The Sega CD had over 200 games produced for it, which is significantly more than any other console add-on I can think of. Some of the classic RPGs from the Playstation were available for the Sega CD, plus multiple good RPGs which never saw play on any other console, plus other games which became paid apps for smartphones. There are multiple other good titles of course, in the area of arcade ports (some of which were better than any other ports at the time), platformers, racers, and other titles already listed by myself and others. Unless you'd count Sony's VR systems and games as failures, for example, I don't see why the Sega CD would earn that title. Sega did fail to make better use of the scaling hardware of the Sega CD, and ports of games such as After Burner or Space Harrier (or other original titles) using that hardware would have helped the system. But the peripheral did offer more than a few games worth owning, and I'd say that 10-20 must-own games justify any system (or add-on) as being worthy.
The PS2 hype machine was definitely a factor in the Dreamcast's failure.
Everyone says it was ahead of its time when in reality it was underpowered in every way compared to the ps2, gamecube, and xbox. Yea it was the first one released, but that doesn’t make it “ahead of its time”
It had the processing power between a ps1 and a ps2. If anything it was more like a Sega 32x where it was merely a bridge towards next gen gaming, considering both were underpowered for their time.
Edit: Don’t get me wrong, I do love the dreamcast, and am currently collecting for it. It’s my favorite Sega console, but saying it was ahead of its time is a huge stretch. Those who say it was ahead of its time probably haven’t played a Dreamcast before.
I love the vmu, THAT was futuristic tech and to this day, it still blows my mind.
But the dreamcast itself isn’t anything special aside from having the VMU.
The menu is cute, the vmu is cute, but when you look at the North American library, it’s honestly embarrassing. Most of the games available for the NTSC-U are racing games, sports games, etc.
Despite what people may have said about it I still got a dreamcast a few years ago and love it the controller and the games still a fun system years later
Are there some games that are best on Dreamcast even though they also came out on PS2, GCN, Xbox?
To Sega of America’s credit, they hated the 32X. They knew about the Saturn’s development and felt the 32X would not only confuse the consumer, but fracture the market.
Except that it was Sega Of America who wanted to maintain the development of the 32X and it was SOA who sold it as an alternative to the Playstation but also to the Saturn....
Hey, Lady Decade. You forgot to mention that the Dreamcast was also released in Europe on October 14th, 1999. Sega Rally 2 was a launch title in that region.
I had my parents get me a Sega Dreamcast for a graduation present! I can't wait to play it!
That's awesome. 👍

@@daynnethedrummer684 What do you mean by days?
@@crazisaturn2274 Figure of speech, lol. As in I could talk about the Dreamcast for days on end.
I still have my Dreamcast hooked up and play it regularly. I'm trying to collect every game in the library (that I actually have interest in.)
My favorite part of the Dreamcast controller was the thin deep crevices that were impossible to clean and collected every bit of dust, dirt and cheeto.
I picked up my Sega Dreamcast w/Sonic Adventure, and Soul Calibur on 9/9/99.
Every video I just wait for Lady Decade to say "a necessity for gracious living".
Despite the Dreamcast being remember more fondly it’s funny the the Saturn sold more not by a large margin. But the Saturn spawned a lot of games in japan only and gained a lot more support.
the saturn sold more in more than 2x the amount of time... dc sold ok for 1.5 to 2 years
Dreamcast was awesome. I remember when shenmue was released. That was definitely mind blowing for the time That was an excellent system. I had zero complaints about it. All the games were great that I had.
I had two dreamcasts back in the day (first one just died) I loved the system, some great games
Still can't believe the Dreamcast died out the year I graduated high school. Amazing video as always!
Fortunately the Dreamcast lived on with its sequel, the Xbox.
And a of its consoles after it. It's a shame Microsoft and Sega refuse to port over saturn and dreamcast games including sequel iqs.
@@maroon9273 MS should have bought SEGA back then. Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Crazy Taxi 3, House of the Dead 3, Shenmue 2... it was truly the Dreamcast succesor.
@@diegofrgc they were a better than dealing with nintendo and sega were balanced in porting games to different consoles during the mid 00s. Shame sega shown more favoritism to nintendo than Sony and especially Microsoft.
@@diegofrgc Yeah, in retrospect Rare should have stayed with Nintendo and Sega partnered with Microsoft (at least outside of Japan) for the Xbox to be the successor to 'Black Belt' after 'White Belt'/Dural didn't succeed.
The Sega Dreamcast failed because it didn't have a Sonichu game. There, thats my shitpost for the day.
Remember those dramatic scenes where a character sees something that literally triggers an explosion of images and memories long forgotten? That's what minute 12:16 did to me. How could I have forgotten the Looney Toons Space Race game!? I used to play it for so long, and I loved it so much.
Thanks for this video on my beloved Dreamcast. Let's hope this piece of history remains in our minds so this doesn't happen again
I purchased my Dreamcast off a work colleague who was selling it to get an Imported PS2. I still owned it after I purchased my PS2 as I had mine modded to play import tittles & there was still decent titles coming out in Japan for quite a while after the console was discontinued in Europe & America. Great console with some fantastic games, which still look & play great today.
I had the awesome Black Sega Sports Dreamcast.
Such a beautiful piece of off white plastic. Got mine on 9/9/99, and it still stays plugged up to my TV on proud display today. Easily my favorite console. I wish Xbox could make it part of the back compat project on the Series systems.
The short version of this story is that Sega failed because conglomerate companies entered the gaming console ring. Both of these companies could have given away their consoles and they would have been fine. And by this time, Nintendo already had enough lucrative IP to sustain themselves to the point where they could survive a failed console launch, or two, or three.
Meanwhile Sega desperately needed a hit with their console and they were competing against three companies that could have survived a total loss on their respective consoles.
And legend has it that Sega produced a hit console and still lost against the powers that be.
Nah Sega failed because its was always fighting itself.
32X shouldn't have even been a thing.
Sega Saturn could have been a more powerful system 3D wise if Sega of Japan listen to Sega of America.
Sega of American shouldn't have blocked some of the Saturn's best Japanese games.
And both American and Japanese companies should have worked together on the Dreamcast
@@thaneros While there is truth in that. The bigger reason was the expanding competition from Sony and Microsoft. Companies so large to where they can sustain the losses from the 32X and the Saturn several times over and still turn a profit because the rest of the company will make up for it and then some.
Nintendo has it's IP and I wouldn't be surprised if they earn more profits from royalties than they do in Console sales.
Sega on the other hand was never in this position at any point during their life. It was always do or die and they took chances that they otherwise shouldn't have taken.
The in-fighting just made things even worse.
I remember that killer Daytona Intro song, for the longest as a kid I thought it said " Timon and PUUUMMBAAA, ......." - lion king for some reason. good times
I got one given to me new in box about 10 years ago. It didn't have much with it. I think just Sega Rally and a demo disc. I've only used it a couple of times since. I did manage to pick up one of those memory units for it a few years ago.
my best gaming memories as a kid was on the dreamcast
Has anyone who was high up at sega ever explained themselves, you know, all those mind-boggling decisions they made in the 90s? Cos I'd LOVE to see that. Dreamcast was the only sega console I bought, but it's probably my favourite console I've owned, though the psone was very close.
Recently found your channel and I’ve been hooked ever since.
The absolute best SEGA games I've ever played were Dreamcast and Saturn games. I have a Saturn, but I miss my Dreamcast. I miss Space Channel 5.
Had to sell my N64 and the games to get a Dreamcast. Loved the N64, but didn't regret it. Dreamcast was a great swan song, though it was bittersweet. I still love Dreamcast aesthetics
So many fond memories of this console. I bought the Japanese import and remember playing Sonic adventure (in Japanese) and thinking wow even though I had no idea what was happening. Power stone wars, blue stinger, soul calibre etc to me were one of my pinnacle gaming times. Every console since has never matched up to that day one unboxing. Thanks for the video.
the sega dreamcast was a good system with a lot of good game's. but it was so underrated. i still got my dreamcast packed away
I remember the one reason I got a ps1 was because they announced FFVII on it but i am not able to remember an exclusive game on the dreamcast which i was looking forward to other than the sonic games, i know they had good games and exclusive games but we just didn't know about them.
I love your channel, Lady Decade! Keep it up!
We were the only ones that failed the Dreamcast...
If Sega officially released new Dreamcast game, in 2022, I'd still buy.
Great consoles, but many waiting for PS2 (with built in DVD player, that mattered 20+ years ago) and easy to counterfeit game discs sunk it. It deserved better, but while their competitors that console cycle Sony, MS, and Nintendo still make consoles, Sega is just a software publisher/dev now. I miss when Sega had consoles.
The DVD was the death blow, which should have been mentioned. I worked for a major retailer in the US North East and it's all people wanted, the system, DVD's and some games.
@@NinjaInTheBronx DVD player was huge in 2000 when PS2 came out as that was right when people were ditching VCR and their VHS tapes and going DVD and it had full backwards compatibility with PS1 which was the first home console to sell 100 million units, so people also got to keep their PS1 library and start their DVD movie library, it was a big deal in gaming AND multimedia.
I bought the Dreamcast twice when it was first released, andin 10 years ago. I still love the machine matter of fact I need to get it back to my son so I could play it again. He's been hogging it. I got the sake of Saturn plugged up on the TV which I still need to play that.
I still have my Dreamcast today. I love playing MSR and Sonic Adventure
Why play MSR when you can play PGR on the Xbox?
My dad was going to get me a Dreamcast, but it was already too late. I remember Sonic Adventure, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Resident Evil Code Veronica, Crazy Taxi and Shenmue like it was yesterday.
As odd as the controller was, I liked the Dreamcast.
Oh, and the first business card I ever got as a newly minted adult in 1995 was from Tom Kalinske. I enlisted in the U.S. Navy following high school, and the night I went to the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) in Los Angeles, just so happened to be the night before the first ever E3, so virtually everyone in the industry was staying at the Westin Bonaventure hotel. The same hotel we were staying at.
Lady Decade can you make a video about Phantasy Star Online, that game alone I feel made the dreamcast the most highly addictive. I heard people broke relationships and even have done things they are ashamed to admit just to continue gaming online. I think everyone who has owned a Dreamcast in its early year had the most fun even with other titles like Marvel vs Capcom and Shenmue were nothing like we had previously it was arcade fun brought to the home.
I remember this happening right around when the PSOne (small version) was released that also had a portable screen you could attach. That (with the screen) came out to be around the same price as the Dreamcast. I ended up settling on the Dreamcast and of course 2 weeks later the news hit. They were no longer making anymore games for the console and the few they did have (where I lived at least) were being discounted majorly. I returned it, got the PSOne with the screen and made a vow that I would never buy another console ever again! The PSOne, on the other hand, came in handy bc I was a lifeguard at the time and whenever I would call "Adult Swim!" instead of the kids getting all bummed they would all run to the pump room where I had it setup and we would play Marvel vs Capcom. I swear they honestly had more fun in there than the actual pool lol. However, I do wonder if I would have gotten into the whole "Dreamcast Hacking scene" if I would have kept it around. Still haven't bought a console since then... but who needs one with a decked out PC am I right? Good memories though.
I remember leaving my construction job on 9/9/99 and going to Toys R Us to see the Dreamcast in action before going home. I was dirty and sweaty, but didn't care. I had to see Sonic Adventure. Good times!
The Sega Dreamcast was my last video game find at a local Goodwill years ago. I haven't seen games in a physical location since.
I love this channel! Long live Lady Decade!!!
Saturn was more powerful the the PS1, DREAMCAST more powerful than PS2. Xbox 360 and Series X more powerful than the PS4 & 5. It goes to show that only one thing matters. Games.
Saturn had more power but nobody could use it all.
The world wasn't ready!
The only good thing about Dreamcast is that you can only play Soul Calibur 1 on it.
I bought a used Dreamcast five years ago and I love it. I recently got Shenmue and have been playing that.
Nearly everyone I knew was waiting on the PS2 when I was a kid & it was worth it!!
There was hardly any games 🎮 on PS2 for over a year the Dreamcast had a far better game library when they where both on the market together. It did become a juggernaut at the end of 2001 though.
@@wizzgamer PS2 was king!!
it even stayed strong in the Next generation
Worth it!!
@@fastcarsnfreedom5407 It was but while the 2 consoles where on the market at the same time the Dreamcast blew it out the water games wise the PS2 built it's massive install base in it's first year through the fact it could play DVD movies at a great price not it's game library from the first year as it was average at best. It did of course become a Juggernaut from the second half of 2001 and beyond.
The Dreamcast was the first (and the last) game console that I pre-ordered and purchased on launch day. I got it with Sonic Adventure, Ready to Rumble Boxing, and Soul Calibur.
9/9/99 was definitely a time to never forget. The library of games, a funky controller, plus the vmu (which was a cute memory card, with an LED screen). From arcade games (which were amazing on the console) driving sims, fighting and more. Plus Sonic Adventure, and SA2 definitely proved it could do so much. Jet Set Radio, a masterpiece.
Phantasy Star Online was a treat.
Shenmue, set the bar so high.. but dang hearing about how much it costed Sega to make is a big yikes. Its game library has something for everyone, but the console life span ended way too soon.
The disc format of the GD-Rom was very cool. It was ahead of its time. Sega still going today, just not the same as it used to be. It may be 20+ years later after the fall of the Dreamcast, but at least we have the memories
I have 3 dreamcasts lol, all of them are the date that let them play burnt games.the main reason I like it is because half the games were direct arcade ports. the reason they went with power VR or "had to" is because they leaked information about the console using 3dfx chips before they announced black belt and apparently it pissed 3dfx off for some reason
A lot of factors worked against it. For me, I was heavily into Nintendo at the time. Didn't have a Playstation, was a fan of Sega but didn't even consider buying into Dreamcast. Just waited until Gamecube came out to have Nintendo's next system. I think if it would have had DVD support, Sega consoles could still be around today. Sony owning DVD was the nail in the coffin.
I also agree with you: the media chosen by Sega was an awful decision; it's so true that Nintendo's Gamecube suffered by the same mistake.
@@felipepereira214 But would anyone have bought it for $499 because that's the price they would have had to sell it for at launch if it had DVD playback.
@@wizzgamer I disagree; basing on the preview generation's (Saturn) launch price in US, it would be around $399. Of course, it would cost $200 more than its official launch price without DVD player built in.
Great video! I preordered my DC before 9.9.99, and I remember the Sonic Adventure GD-ROMS were faulty, as I went thru an brought back 4 of them lol! I still play my DC, albeit thru vga box and OSSC.Such a great console!!
Yep! I knew it! She is in fact married to top hat gaming!!! Awesome that they are both gamers and on UA-cam I follow both channels
My first and only Sega console. Still have it, and since then bought 2 extras.
I first had a Genesis than 2 Dreamcasts. Never had a PS1 or N64. So automatically I fell in love with Dreamcast. TrickStyle is my favorite game from it
Dreamcast > ps2 period. Sony marketing> sega marketing .
The Dreamcast is still one of my favorite consoles of all time!
Sonic Adventure was my first game, followed by House of the Dead 2, Power Stone, and Soul Caliber.
I still remember the first time I played Shenmue.
I also loved the weird titles like Seaman.
Oh yeah! Can’t forget Marvel VS Capcom
I've only seen 1 person own a dreamcast in the past.back then,my dad was dating someone who had a brother that owned one
I still love the Dreamcast. My question is..... What happened to Sega?
I loved my Dreamcast. And my friends also.
Crazy Taxi and Soul Caliber were awesome.
🥰
The Dreamcast didn't fail. SEGA failed it and us. SEGA can be forgiven for the SEGA CD in NA, the players here begged for it. The 32X should never have existed. The Saturn should have launched in November(I think it was November) having it launch early was a gamble that pissed off a good portion of the 3rd party support which from what I remember was equal to if not more than what the original Playstation had. Sometimes a gamble pays off but in this case I believe it was this mistake that was what really cost SEGA enough that they couldn't afford to keep the Dreamcast fighting against the Playstation 2(which really did look better on paper than what we eventually got). I still maintain the belief that if the Dreamcast was funded enough to fight it could have won against the PS2, at least for a good portion of the life of the PS2 anyway
In Japan the dreamcast continued getting more officially licensed games until early 2007. Hell the last first party title for dreamcast was puyo puyo fever in 2004
Releasing a console and launch games is so difficult. I myself created a few games and they took 3 and 4 years to make. So if you want your game to come out at launch you have to have been working on it for a while already. And you could have a really cool game coming out, but its going to take a few years.
I like to play "what if-I wish" with regards to SEGA. I wish SEGA skipped over the 32X and went with a console that was a mixture of the unreleased SEGA Neptune and SEGA Pluto. A 32 bit system that was backwards compatible with Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and CD games, along with its own titles (Saturn generation games), and online multi-player games with the built-in modem.
Loved my Dreamcast, sad it failed so hard in the West.
