The dreamcast was insane, there were so many, maybe not firsts, but immensely important refinements that, as sy said, the technology of the time couldn't keep up with. That whole system was Marty McFly saying "Guess you guys aren't ready for that yet... but your kids are going to love it"

I loved my Dreamcast. It blew my mind years later when I found out people felt like it was a failure, I figured everyone was on the same page that Sega left the hardware game on a high note.
Agreed, even the AVGN said that it was a great system. So at least Sega went out with a bang. In fairness, Sega still makes Sega arcades, the 2 Sega Genesis Mini plug-and-plays, and stuff, so they still made some hardware after getting out of the Console business.
It was a failure. The biggest problems were PS2 coming with a DVD and most important, it was cracked at the biggining. All the games could be easily compied and burnt into regular CDS.
I didn't get a dreamcast until the early 2010s and I absolutely loved it. Still have it today. Honestly very sad Sega isn't in the hardware biz these days.
The saturn had a menu, internal clock, and network connection for online play. Saturn Bomberman for example could host many players. Saturn League is website that last time I checked still acts as a forum for making gaming sessions.
Everything the Dreamcast touted as a feature was something that some other console had first. Even more embarrassing was that it lacked capabilities that other consoles of it's same generation had on launch...
To be fair, it did it better than the rest. Online play actually worked and was highly functional. Saturn's menu was clunky and slow. Internal clock was done before Saturn, but again, not as well as Dreamcast.
I only got to play the Dreamcast once or twice in it's heyday (I was more for PlayStation) but it's always stuck with me how far ahead and revolutionary it seemed at the time.
For someone that couldn't visit Japan at the time it was a wonderful experience. It really captured the feel. That Christmas I had Shenmue and Majora's Mask, perfect
There was nothing like Shenmue when it came out in '99 on the Dreamcast. If Metal Gear Solid on the PS1 made me felt like games can be like cinematic movie experiences, Shenmue made me felt like I was playing a real world Sim that felt life like for the time. In some ways the art style still holds up till this day.
@@jasondomican1991 yeah man, personally, there hasn't been a game since Shenmue that made me recaptured that europhic feeling of playing something so awe inspiring, innovative and captivating all at once. It blew my mind back when i was 14 from the graphics, gameplay and music. It felt like I was witnessing something from the comfort of my couch that nobody had access to and only a few knew about it. There are some games that came close to recapturing that europhic feeling like Metal Gear Solid, The Witcher 3,The last Of Us,Bioshock and Mass Effect to name a few and there have been games that took the formula of what Shenmue created and surpassed and even perfected it but there hasn't been a gaming experience quite like Shenmue.
I still have my Dreamcast on display. It's got autographs of Sega reps and Sonic voice actors on it. It's my favorite console of all time next to the PS1! :)
The Dreamcast's controller wasn't comfortable to use for me, which really killed any interest I had in it as a kid, but as an adult it does seem to have some of the best ports of certain games and some random Sega gems. Still a terribly awkward controller though in my opinion.
I get what you're saying but I personally didn't have an issue with it. I guess I was enamored with some of the games that I didn't really pay any mind to it like that.
I remember playing Phantasy Star Online late into the night/early morning with people from all over the world. It was truly a magical experience and less toxic than many of the online session today. The Dreamcast was definitely something special.
Shenmue wasn't boring. It happens to be one of my favorite games of all time; especially back then when we never seen those types of graphics, detail, gameplay, the fluidness and a story that's was almost true to life. And the combat was like a Fast and Fury on the Neo Geo.
The Dreamcast should've been more successful. It was friggin awesome. I still have mine and have Sonic Adventures 1 and 2, Shenmue, Resident Evil: Code Veronica (Not X. Code Veronica was originally a Dreamcast exclusive), House of the Dead 2, and Power Stone. God, Power Stone was so friggin awesome.
NFL2K was killing the Madden series, which is why EA bought the exclusive rights to make NFL licenses games, thereby killing its biggest competition. The best thing about NFL 2K was the included soundtrack hidden in the Options menu, which included uncensored songs like DMX's Party Up.
The playstation 2s and xbox dvd capability was the difference. If the Dreamcast had played DVDs i think it would of lasted at least a bit longer if not for entire generation.
kind of sad I missed out on the dreamcast. I went with N64 back then but seeing dreamcast stuff now some of the games look like they could have been ps2 games it's crazy how good games looked on it. Wish they would have worked on something to see if they could keep up with the ps2 and xbox or even made something to keep up with the ps3 and 360 they was on the right path with the dreamcast.
My favorite system launch of all time. I remember skipping school and going to the mall with my brother and a friend to pick up our reservations. I was extremely disappointed the Dreamcast didn’t survive, and personally hold it above the PS2 in retrospect.
You had to be there. I remember watching powerstone being played on a Japanese Dreamcast in CEX and I was enamored. Man I miss SEGA in the console space
Still remember getting my phone bill after buying PSO and playing it for hours on end. The Internet was ppm (pay per minute) of use at the time. Had to work quite a few extra shifts that month! Also remember Sega gave about 250 mb of free webspace to use and i wrote my first web app on the Dreamcast.
I had a Saturn and it was an amazing console. Never had a Dreamcast but I have recently... *Experienced* it. And honestly? Lovely graphics, whimsy abound, unique game ideas, it's an amazing console. The problems it suffered was 1) the games were more costly, 2) the games it had wasn't all amazing (one I'm currently playing, Blue Stinger, is... Well, it's got some very janky parts, like the voice acting), 3) the competition was insanely strong. Also, the GDI issue had another problem: you can't use them anywhere now. If you have an emulator and still have the CDs for the Dreamcast, those CDs will not work cos disc drives don't read GDIs. But if you have a PS1 disc or a Sega Saturn disc, both can be used with emulators perfectly fine.
I still use mines on my LG nano cell TV with a HDMi converter. I often play Napple tale because it's such a wonderful game by Sonic Team and also a hidden gem.
Dreamcast...I loved it. My friend had one, and it brought us all together on the game "Phantasy Star Online". This was then ported to the Gamecube, and me and my friends loved it to the core.
I pre-date the dreamcast, I had one, but it didn't mean so much to me, the Megadrive was everything. Great video Psy, I might actually buy myself an old Dreamcast and revisit some of the highlights.
Still have my Dreamcast along with about 20 games 😏 Sonic, Marvel Vs Capcom, Code Veronica, Trickstyle, GTA 2, Street Fighter 3, Sniper Scope, Quake III…many good times
UK and other European gamers have so much to thank Sega for with the 60hz. So many bad PAL conversions trashed great games like Sonic and Metal Gear Solid which both ran slower than their US/Japan counterparts. Sega already did copy protection with the Saturn by building in a processor into the CD drive and a thing called a 'wobble' on the discs. Like the PS1 mod chips were used to bypass the copy protection.
Most of the Dreamcast library played in a 480p output which looked way better than any of the consoles before and even some of the same games that eventually released on the PS2 like DOA2, MVC2, and Resident Evil Code Veronica
Yeah you had to experience playing the console in order to understand the love and appreciation for it. The Dreamcast was def ahead of its time and was a beast of a machine. Too bad the PS2 blew it out the water but I felt the Dreamcast could've stuck around just a little bit longer before they pulled the plug on it.

So far ahead of it's time. I had the black 2k sports Dreamcast and people thought it was a PS2.

Jet Set Radio.

That VMU was great for NFL 2k, you can call your plays in that thing without having to worry about your bum opponent lurking.
One of my favorite consoles, but so short-lived. I wish they had made a Dreamcast mini.
It might be expensive like the Playstation Mini, or Sega Genesis 2 Mini, but I would gladly pay $99. for it.
