One of the most important thing in Australia is to own a car. It not only provides a swift and cheap way of mobility but also assists in earning. My analogy for importance of owning a car is similar to having legs. Not having a car is similar to being disabled.
My advise to all new comers is to buy a car as soon as they land, particularly if they don't live in the city. Car opens up opportunities to explore and work.
In Aus, car repair is extremely expensive. As I am not a mechanic, I will base my advise on experience. It works in most cases but may vary in specific situations.
1. Don't buy a car less than $3000.
2. Try buying a car with low mileage (under 120k).
3. Buy automatic car (easy resale)
4. Stick to Japanese / Korean cars (low maintenance).
5. Do Revcheck before buying
6. Check logbook. Don't buy if incomplete.
7. Don't buy without RWC or inspection from a mechanic (call any near by mechanic book an appointment, get the car checked before buying) will cost around $100. It is worth the $ to avoid head ache.
8. Seller profile matters. Older ppl are more likely to look after their car. Trying buying from Chinese they look after their cars religiously. Avoid buying from other students, unless you have done all the aforementioned checks.
9. Avoid buying from dodgy suburbs.
10. Never go for a deal alone or go inside a house to make payments.
11. Check for leaks under the car. Drive the car and check breaks. If not perfect dump it.
12. Check value of similar cars on gumtree and car sales.

Bonus Tip: Always get comprehensive insurance, driving without one is a folly. Over the years I have been hit twice with the fault of other party. Both times they didn't have insurance. My comprehensive insurance covered around $3000 and $1800 worth of damages.
