3rd generation trucker here, Great Video , Do not forget Equipment depreciation, Only person that wins is the Broker. Rates are the same as they were 20 years ago. bunch of collage dropouts on the other side offering you 1.8 to go in and 1.1 to return. That is why brokers turn into Billion dollar company in 10 years and truckers suffer. DO NOT Haul cheap freight you are killing your self in the long run.
@Srbistanik 01 true. but that will help the cost per mile by $0.48! Probably help the maintenance & fuel numbers too. it will be great for trucking companies.
Truck payment of 1000 = 0.01 plus another $1000 per month for all of that , so $0.02 gets you to $1.70 office and parking add 0.03 so lets say $1.73 getting a $3 load will give $1.27 left over at 100000 miles that's $127K. im using a 75000 truck with 25000 down
This was amazing brother you nailed it on the head. Keep up the great work with these videos you're dropping some serious knowledge. You definitely earned yourself a new subscriber.
Glad to see you got right to the point and didn’t make an hour long video like most do. The only thing I will say is there are lots of little expenses not mentioned here that can add up over a year. To all you Brokers watching this is a basic break down and didn’t touch on back office expense or MANY other items.
OK then add it in if you want too Phone 1500 Parking 1000 Eld 400 Truck wash 840 Tolls 5000 Load boards 3000 Gear tools 500 Cpa 1200 Scales 600 Ok we will call it 14000 a year that's .14 a mile Stop sweating the small stuff people. He nailed it. Mine with my truck payment and all this stuff and.52 a mile to me as the driver is $1.80 a mile. So I know I need to make $3600 a week to the truck. doesn't matter if I have to take a shit pay load to get to a good area or a good paying load it is about the weekly or monthly avg I do.
Excellent video ! Unless your getting at least 1.80 per mile, you maybe better off as a company driver. This man just proved that many are only making the wages of a company driver, who, doesn't have all the head aches of an owner operator.
I wish all O/O would know this as it is those people who can’t figure it out that keep the freight rates low. Like I was told by an old owner operator, it’s cheaper to dead head to a better freight lane than to haul a cheap load. Great video brother.
Yeah, about right. Insurance is all over the place. I started laughing when you said if you have a payment add that on top of your numbers. Most people really do believe the new Trks have no breakdowns or repairs. Lol. Yes, the driver pay is another point people just don't understand. Great video very real life model.
I’m pretty new to the trucking game, but I’ve always been told not to touch the freight unless it pays two dollars a mile. It’s these assholes working for free driving the prices down that really fucks the rest of us
Thank you so much for this video! I been trying to figure this out and that just made a whole lot of sense. I feel a lot more confident that I can figure my cost per mile down. Means a lot to me to see this breakdown...
Thank you so much, I just happened across this at the right time, 3 months into the coronavirus shutdown, @66yrs old I'm X- HHG Moving Van lines O/O, ( 30 yrs as a OTR HHG mover crippled me) seven years ago went back to work to take care of a "New Wife" / took a 4 yr no-money-down deal with Bekins on a 09' T2000 w473k 400ISX , to go back into Trade Show /High Value haul, besides new wife running off with a flat bed driver, the company closing after 18 months, my repairs averaged 20k+ a year on a $59k truck,, all related to the emissions! How could you not factor in a truck replacement cost? I understand the truck is paid for now, but at some point inevitably you will have to replace the truck. Whether you finance it, or pay cash, you will have to incur that loss. I would think you should be factoring in a small amount per mile for truck replacement cost, no?
A lot of times you're better off deadheading because you'll get better FE and won't get dragged into a bad situation preventing you from getting the better load you were aiming for in the first place.
Yep yep yep I'm a new sub n I've watched a few of your videos. Just put it like this that 5k subs u have isn't close to what the value of information your giving out. So many truckers/OO/fleet owners have no clue to what they are doing.
Great video but according to all the comments here we have to add more money to cost per mile, so according to the commentators here the CPM will be almost 2.50 per mile. And we’ve been beaten by brokers who tried to give us cheap loads.hopefully I’m wrong.
Good numbers and all the hidden expenses that crop up you should double it from $1.63 per mile. to $3.00 per mile. To be profitable anything over $3.00 per mile is net profit. Don't accept anything less than $3.00 per mile and if all drivers would go along with that figure, you would force the brokers to start there. My opinion.
Thanks for the info and thank you for getting straight to the point. Question: you will need to replace your truck at some point I'm curious why don't include that in your cost?
Man thanks for all the Videos I have two years experience and I can buy a truck now cash or if I can work under your license are you hire me for a company driver or Owner operator please let me know thanks again for all the videos
Where did you get the insurance. Or what state in California is around 12,000 a year.. not sure exactly yeat as I'm planning to get insurance but still at trying to get my authority
42 cents a mile maintenance is nuts. I run 20+ yr old equipment and have only had maintenance cost that high one year. 15 to 25 is more normal for truck and trailer.
i realize this is an older video but it looks like the maintenance numbers need to get reduced to represent the 100k miles per year. an example is the $20,000 motor per 600,000 miles. $20,000 x 100k miles =2,000,000,000 divided by 600k miles = $3,333 per 100k miles. so $3333 dollars needs to saved for every 100k miles for a motor overhaul. if you reduce the other maintenance costs to 100 k it comes to .13 cents per mile. also instead of paying $60k a year in fuel @5mpg it would be smart to finance a new truck which would spend $30k at 10 mpg. you would be paying for a new truck with the fuel savings alone plus money in the pocket. so ive got 53 cents per mile of overhead per 100k miles plus $120k per year profit is $1.2 per mile which makes 1.73 dollars per mile per year per 100k miles
You need to look a cost per day from house to truck and all bills mine are 255 a day be for fuel . For every 500 dollars a month cost you avg 17 dollars a day. You need to make money for every day if the truck run or not. 500 a day 365 days a yr is 182500 yr. Less miles more money. That 3500 dollar a week over 7 days. So every day last i myself did 545 a day and took 3 months off. Work less make more .

Amazing video, you should make one on the steps needed to hire a driver.
OK then add it in if you want too
Phone 1500
Parking 1000
Eld 400
Truck wash 840
Tolls 5000
Load boards 3000

I'm an o/o too and your numbers are very accurate! Close enough anyway!
God bless you and your family!
This is why so many new truck owners fail. They think they're ballin' when they're not. They spend their gross instead of their net.
Good points! Numbers are pretty realistic as I'm also in my 3rd year of trucking. Keep the videos coming!
I wish all O/O would know this as it is those people who can’t figure it out that keep the freight rates low. Like I was told by an old owner operator, it’s cheaper to dead head to a better freight lane than to haul a cheap load. Great video brother.

10mpg? Which wündertrück is this?
Thank you sir.
What's the formula you used to find the cost per mile on everything?
Cost per year divided by 100k miles a year
At 5mpg I would sell that truck.
