  • Join a search for lost Spanish treasure. Explore mountain caves where ancient people lived. Visit the only tin mines in the United States. Ride three tramways to the top of El Paso’s mountains. Hike to a hidden desert spring, high on Mount Franklin. Climb an extinct volcano to the largest Christ figure in North America. See El Paso like never before!
“Legends of El Paso’s Mountains” explores the special bond between the people of El Paso and their mountains, through stories that have been handed down from generation to generation. Premiering in the video are two original songs, written for the program.
“Legends of El Paso’s Mountains” presents the city’s most famous tale of lost treasure - the legend of the Lost Padre Mine - as told by the people of El Paso. The video shows that for centuries treasure seekers may have been looking in the wrong place. “Legends of El Paso’s Mountains” also looks at the unique relationship the people of El Paso have with their mountains, as they live, work and play in the Franklin mountain range. Mountain bikers test their endurance against the rocky mountain terrain. Hikers enjoy the exercise and the views, as well as the legends of ancient people and their art. And every year, hundreds of people take part in the Trans Mountain Challenge, a 12-mile run through a mile-high mountain pass.
“Legends of El Paso’s Mountains” recounts the tale of a Texas Ranger who met horse thieves, and his fate, in the mountains; as well as the tragic stories of three plane crashes on the mountain. “Legends of El Paso’s Mountains” features two original songs, “El Paso Gold” and “The Top of Texas.” The songs are performed by El Paso musician Tim Thompson, who composed the music. Lyrics are by Jackson Polk of Capstone Productions.
Polk said, “The words to ‘El Paso Gold’ reflects the many riches we have to treasure here in El Paso, from the gold in the desert sunsets to the beauty of our mountains.” The second original song, “The Top of Texas,” is a light-hearted look at El Paso’s unique position as the only Texas city that boasts a mountain completely within its boundaries. North Mount Franklin reaches an elevation of 7,192 feet, making El Paso the highest city in Texas, and that’s something to brag about.
Recorded and edited on digital video over a period of three years, “Legends of El Paso’s Mountains” is a 41-minute program that presents the beauty of desert mountains. One section features two prominent local artists, Tom Lea and Eugene Thurston, as it examines how area artists interpret the mountains.
KCOS-TV 13 Public Relations Director, Diana Munoz, said “The program is excellent! I’ve lived in El Paso my whole life and I never knew all these stories about El Paso’s mountains. The video footage is great to watch and it is great to share these “Legends” with El Paso on KCOS TV. I hope thousands of El Pasoans will see this program and also support KCOS."

    I am El Paso 08/04/2019
    by Gerardo Molinar
I am in the corner of this great State of Texas surrounded by natural Beauty,
I am known as El Paso Del Norte, El Chuco and The Sun City.
I am also called the Twin sister of Juarez, Mx. across the border,
We have many things in common but between us she is a little older.
I am inhabited by friendly loving people of different ethnicities,
I am over 100 yrs. old created in 1850 and a city rich in history.
I have been a witness to the revolt against the Spaniards by the Tiguas,
I witnessed the fighting during the Mx. Revolution for Juarez, Chihuhua.
I was a witness to the many gun fights by some well known gunmen,
A shootout with Marshall D.Stoudenmire and killing of John Wesley Hardin.
I have had a violent past to say the least but a Peaceful city was created,
Home of ASARCO refinery of copper and The Tx. School of Mines now UTEP.
I have had songs written about me and I have been in several movies,
Home of the Tony Lama boot Co. and the Coors Beer Brewery.
I see many people that pass thru me to reach the American Dream,
Many have achieved it but I will tell you it's not as easy as it seems.
I may be old but still growing with a population that's full of Diversity,
I am full of people who are friendly and Loving
I am El Paso, The Sun City.

Lived there for 7+ years in the late 80s-early 90s and absolutely fell in love with it. The mountains, the desert, the weather, the culture, the people and the food! I see video retrospectives like this and I look back fondly on this beautiful city and the time I spent there.

I wouldnt want to have been born in any other city in the world. A place i've always felt connected with on not just a personal level, but a spiritual one. Maybe an old soul, i dont know. but there's always been something special about El Paso that i've always felt since I was a kid. Such a beautiful place.

i hiked up into a secluded part on the mountain one day digging in the dirt looking for cool rocks and gathering a bag of dirt to test for gold fragments,i heard some woman behind me say something in spanish and it scared the bajesus out of me and i turned around and fell onto my back, there was nobody there,i even climbed up the hill next to me and searched everywhere and nobody was there or anywhere, i heard it plain as day directly next to me and i still to this day have no idea what or who it was but it scared me off the mountain.

I heard that Kastner (spelling) Range in north east El Paso was being developed for more damned housing. I love El Paso. I had the luck of being stationed at William Beaumont for several multi year tours and met my wife there in 1974. I was there pre and post desert storm and retired there. I wanted to stay but my wife said no.

Nothing more dangerous to history than amateur historians. The myth of the Lost Padre Mine is just that.... a myth. But they sure got the Tin Mines information correct. And no better sources exist about the creation of the Franklin Mountains State Park than John Sproul and Gerald Fitzgerald. Another plane crashed into the west side of the Mountains in the late 80's, but it was not a military plane. It was a private plane carrying bank notes from Dallas to El Paso. Members of the City Mountain Rescue Team, now COMSAR, used the small television tramway spoken of to reach the wreck and guard the bank notes until they could be collected by officials the next day.

Not Frankie mountain not la Sierra de Los mansos.
That's a derogative Spaniard to the original natives was a very large of native nations aborigenes many of them soanisrddy names in. A very silly
Ways. My rebuttal is that the original name of this. Mountain is hiden somewhere in prehispanic era .
