- Nick Lowles is chief executive of HOPE not hate, the UK's largest anti-racism and anti-extremism movement. For the last 35 years, he has tirelessly fought against those who try to exploit frustrations, create divisions and pit groups against each other.
Nick began his involvement with the anti-fascist movement as a student volunteer. He then worked for the anti-fascist magazine Searchlight before founding HOPE not hate in 2004. In his first ever interview about his life, Nick tells James why he's dedicated his life to fighting extremism and what keeps him awake at night.

I would like to insert here that Democrats and America are gonna surprise the world because we’re going to reelect Joe Biden and his vice president to the White House in November 2024. Europe and the UK will not be so lucky you guys are going to go on a five-year far right wing authoritarian bent. We hope you can survive it. Your clinging to monarchy is in part your problem because it does not make your people wake up to a 21st century situation in their country. You live in the past and then you want people to think futuristically it’s not gonna happen dump your monarchy and move on. But don’t listen to me just watch for the next five years your status in the world and your economic system. It doesn’t work.
I agree about the Tories as they are the traditional route to power of the right. They've been mostly moderate-leaning for all my life despite the occasional MP more to the extreme right but an election wipeout could lead to the right of their party taking power and then a Braverman or Farage at the helm. The question then would be whether they would be constrained by the extremes of their politics or whether they'd make extreme politics more normalised. I think media and technology does more to affect the latter than party political ups and downs do. Most of my life there has been a section of every constituency that is quite extreme but their politics felt more distant to the overall environment then than it does now. The ones I knew were actually quite apolitical and football hooligan types; much more interested in a drink and violence than in actual politics, but that's all changed. Some normalisation has happened. It's either tech and social media or it's because societies become more insular in economically difficult times and far right politics come more to the fore then.
Humble, courteous, a lot to be learned from.
The abuse he receives from the far right online is horrendous. They loathe having sunlight shone on them.

Actually yes James it does matter, it matters a great deal. And what you did there encapsulates why we live in such a clown show country. Of course peoples feelings are valid but so is the FACT that they admitted their thoughts and feelings were illogical. Perhaps next time you could say something like “ I can understand why you may have felt like that but by your own admission those feelings were illogical , how do we as a society move forward balancing objective rationality and subjective feelings” instead of “it doesn’t matter does it”
Totally agree with you. James O'Brien knows very little about the world he looks down on from his Ivory tower. It makes him feel better to sympathise with certain groups but he has zero understanding of what it's like to live amongst them , and he has the money to never have to , so it's only ever an Intellectual thought exercise to him. He also doesn't understand the difference between race and religion and constantly demonstrates that on his radio show. I plan on calling in one day because for the most part the person who decides which callers to let through to speak to James , will only allow people who may not be the best of speakers or didn't have a privileged education. These people have valid concern's but James will challenge them on the dictionary definition of a word , to side step the point they were trying to make. His low level debate tactics wont help him with me , but I will have to play my cards right to get the opportunity to speak to him. There was a youtuber who used to phone in to LBC and because he was making fools of them , he had to start using different numbers , names and accents. It was great to listen to , but it got to the point where they were so suspicious a caller might be him they were cutting off normal LBC listeners.
