My coworker told me about job programs in Europe (maybe Vienna) where they have homeless young adults take care of lonely elderly people. They found that the employment not only helped the youth but it made the elderly have a more enriching life and allowed them to be happier and live longer.
I bring it up because Terry and Bruce's relationship shows the positive effects of intergenerational relationships. Terry is Bruce's reconnection with the people of Gotham and it enriches both of their lives.

I have to say their relationship is also so well written and meaningful that well... the final plot twist that biologically speaking Terry is Bruce's son... it matters so little I don't actually care.
Terry's DNA just feels so meaningless because their actual bond as people is already so great, and how strong they are as separate individual characters.
We know they rescued each other, both physically and spiritually, we know they helped each other grow in new ways. We know that Bruce needed Terry to find his way again, and Terry actually needed Bruce to find HIS way. They clash, but their clashes always lead to growth for the both of them, and you know they really care a lot about each other.
Bruce IS like a father to Terry, filling in the gap left behind when Terry's real father died.
Terry IS like a son to Bruce, filling the gap left from all those who left Bruce behind or rather... Bruce left all of them behind. But Terry is the kind of person who doesn't take no for an answer, he is legitimately so stubborn he is not letting Bruce leave him behind so yeah... They are two broken people, in desperate need of what the other had to give and it just works so well.

Yeah the chosen one story telling only work if there's a real drawback to it.
Like in Harry Potter. Harry is actually a very shy introvert, so him being the actual chosen and he gets so much attention he never asked for really sucks for him.
And of course it's how he ended up as an orphan in the first place... and then of course it turns out Harry was just one out of two potentially chosen ones, and the other one, Nevielle, had an even WORSE life, and would have been even worse at handling that kind of laser-focused attention.
And often it is kind of nicer when the main character is just a normal person, who either is very driven so they make something of themselves, or is in a situation where they HAVE to take action to survive and... Terry is actually both, so that's great.
He is very driven and independent, like I said Bruce is the one who tend to leave everybody behind. And Terry is the kind of ridiculously stubborn person that just won't go away!
That's another point too, Terry ALWAYS had the option of leaving. Bruce would never have stopped him from leaving, he'll probably even encourage it, but Terry is the driving force of his own destiny and just refuses, which is nice. I like that.
no one talked him into becoming Batman, or stay when things are hard, no HE wanted it, and HE took it. And faces a lot of bad consequences for it but... the kid is stubborn, he knows what he has to do. For the sake of helping others too.
THAT'S something Amanda Waller pointed out I liked... Terry doesn't have Bruce's genius, but he has his heart, and that's what matters here.

@@sabbathjackal ... Of course Batman is not just a guy, where did you get that dumb idea?
Batman is extremely exceptional, he's exceptional in his skills, his intelligence, his empathy... Not everyone can just be Batman that's really dumb.
And what makes Terry great as a character is... He is Batman. He's exceptional too. But on his own terms obviously making him a very different kind of Batman than Bruce, which was especially cemented in the Joker movie.
And because it's so cemented already, the DNA really doesn't matter at all... Whether it was true or not. Terry is his own person and such a strong character who's so different from Bruce yet exceptional in his own right that DNA becomes inconsequential.
Also since we have clearly seen it is Terry's personal EXPERIENCES that shaped him into the Batman he finally became with "Return of the Joker."

I seriously respect the DCAU for going the dark and depressing route for Batman's future. Because this is the most realistic ending for the character, he'd keep fighting this never ending battle until it either killed him or he became too old to keep fighting, leaving him with nothing because he pushed everyone away in favor of the mission.

Batman Beyond is an underrated gem of a show that thoroughly explores the realities that even a god among men like Bruce would inevitably experience as someone who has lived through so much but allowed himself to have so little in life due to his constant war against the darkness. For as strong as Bruce is, he is still just a broken man who slowly stepped back into the light. As he seizes more control over his family's company away from Derek Powers and his ilk, he steps more away from his need to be Batman and how the mantle of the Dark Knight has defined him. As Batman becomes more and more Terry's role, Bruce, in a way, can resume his own life that was taken from him as a child. Terry is an overall happier Batman by the end of the series than Bruce ever was. Bruce has allowed someone else to take over that role that he carved out into the world as a symbol of justice in an uncaring world, and so has become Bruce Wayne again in full. With a proper successor and son in more than just blood, Bruce can finally have what he's always needed: a family all his own that gets and fully understands him. The story of Batman Beyond is the one true conclusion that solves the problem of Bruce Wayne's mortality and legacy: to live as a man and age as a man, and when his time comes, to die with dignity, with a son he loves taking up the mantle, and that son being a happier Batman. Thus, he'll be leaving the world a brighter place thanks to Terry, the son who brought light back to a dark and weary soul.

To me though it sorta meant nothing. That was more of an emotional violation in my head. I interpret that as Terry being more mad he thought Bruce took the choice to be Batman out of his hands before he was even born. Even if Terry has half of Bruce's DNA it wouldnt matter. Nothing about being Batman comes from his genes except maybe intelligence. Everything Batman is was learned from other people. I once even heard Batman developed a photographic memory through practice.

I’m in a real weird boat with Batman Beyond and the character of Terry McGinnis, because I’ve never watched a single full episode of the show, or the Return of The Joker movie, I’ve only read Sean Gordon Murphy’s ‘White Knight’ version of the events- but I still know a decent bit from the original animated series just from UA-cam and years of being a DC nerd, and it’s given me a deep appreciation for Terry as a character. As someone who doesn’t think that any of the Robins should ever be Batman (Dick and Jason would never accept it unless it’s the FINAL resort, Tim wouldn’t take the mantle because he’d feel there’s too much to live up to, and while Damian would start out with the perfect intentions and methods, I feel he’d crack under pressure over time), there’s Terry- someone cut from very familiar, Robin-coloured cloths- a spunky, no-nonsense street kid who refuses to stand by when he can act instead. He created a unique and refreshing dynamic with Bruce, and It’s nice to see that no matter how much DC tries to sweep a legacy like that under the rug, we won’t ever let them.

    @marvelsandals4228 8 днів тому

I absolutely love the relationship between Bruce and Terry. It gives me life. I think on some level Bruce lost faith in himself, in his cause, his mission, his choices, and the world as a whole. He retired as Batman, but instead of being relieved to be freed from that burden or excited to focus on other ventures like running his company or something, he just sat alone in silence with a scowl on his face, rotting away in his empty mansion, with nothing to live for, no passion, no love in his old, black heart.
Maybe to some degree the role of Batman has always been a construct, a character, an elaborate act for the benefit of the public, but Bruce himself could never escape his imposter syndrome. Deep down he could never shake the idea that the man, Bruce Wayne, was ordinary, unworthy of the legacy he meticulously crafted around Batman. Eventually, he even lost faith in the ideal itself, the energy and ambition which propelled him to set out on his quest in the first place having long since withered away.
Terry saved Bruce, because Terry believed in Batman, and by extension in Bruce, more than Bruce believed in himself. Terry has a simple, pure, and unambiguous view of the world: there are heroes and villains, good and evil. Batman is a hero, the ultimate hero, and as far as he's concerned that's all there is to it. Terry's only teenage frustration towards Bruce was at how he changed. To Terry, nothing had changed. Terry's dad was murdered just like Bruce's parents. Gotham is still in trouble, the villains are still out there, up to no good, and the city still needs Batman.
Terry cuts through all of Bruce's regrets, all the legal and moral shades of gray surrounding his actions over the years. Terry's message is crystal clear: you were right to become Batman. It was the right thing to do. You're a hero. With that message comes a challenge: why did you retire? Why did Batman retire? The world still needs Batman. If you won't do it, I will.
Is Terry right? Perhaps he's just a naive, foolish teenager. What does he know? And yet, he has faith in Batman, the faith that Bruce once had, the faith he lost. It rekindled something in his heart. He remembered why he did this in the first place. Batman isn't dead. He lives on in Terry, but Terry is an undisciplined, angsty delinquent with no combat skills or resources. He can't live up to the legend, not without Bruce's help and guidance.
Bruce is still needed. His body may be weak, but his years of experience, wisdom, and wealth are essential to Terry's success. Who is Batman? Terry or Bruce? In truth, neither man can do it alone, they need each other, they are two sides of the same coin, Bruce's old mind and Terry's young body. TOGETHER they are Batman.

Imagine pitching a show like Batman beyond now. "Hey you like Batman, right? Well in this version he's old and decrepit now and can't do any of those cool things anymore. Instead the Batman of this show is a cool, snarky high school kid." Batman fans would riot over hearing that summery. But no, it's actually a fantastic show.

I don't think batman fans would be angry over Bruce being old and decrepit, or having a replacement who's younger, what they'll get mad about is if the replacement isn't Dick grayson or Terry.

Ironically, the show was conceived because the network wanted a "teenage Batman" show to appeal to a younger audience. They probably wanted the Batman version of the Young Indiana Jones franchise ... but they got Batman Beyond.

Terry McGinnis is the best thing that has ever happend to Bruce Wayne. By the time of Batman Beyond, Bruce is alone in a big empty house due to thanks to the trauma from his final battle with the Joker, which has caused him to alienate both his friends and the Bat-Family. He kept fighting the good fight as Batman in Gotham for several decades onward, until his body couldn't handle it and he was nearly forced to shoot a criminal to death in order to defend himself. With his hard realization his forced to hang up his cowl and loses his company to a corrupt businessman, leaving him with nothing, but his own shame in his regrets and failing body in what is better described as a haunted house than a mansion. Decades go by and he meets Terry, a young punk with a heart of gold who Bruce meets by chance and is struck with a similar tragedy to Bruce's own, causing him to steal Bruce's final suit in order to avenge his father's death. Though intially angry at this, Bruce comes to empathize with Terry and after seeing the boy's potential offers him the chance to be the new Batman with the former as his guy in the chair, which the latter accepts. As time goes by Bruce comes to not only care for Terry like a father and feel a quiet pride as the latter grows as the new batman, but through him allows him to mend the bridges he burnt long ago as well as regaining his beloved company and putting it to good use. Then the Joker returns, and despite Bruce's fears of Terry ending up like Tim Drake, the new Batman not only rises to the challenge in facing the Clown Prince of Crime, but defeats him once and for all in a manner that Bruce could never has thought of, much less execute. Upon the Joker's final defeat, Bruce admits the pride he has to Terry for being Batman and has him continue to be Batman as Bruce slowly retires from crime fighting in the following decades. By the end of end of Bruce's life he has finally achieved his happy ending: Wayne Enterprises is back in his control and being use to help the people of Gotham; the role of Batman has been passed on to Terry who is continuing to help the city and world; Bruce has reunited with his old friends and Bat-Family and is enjoying his retirement as Batman; and Bruce has found a son in Terry, both metaphorically and litterally, who is planning marry Diana and have a family of their own, meaning Bruce will get to meet his own grandchildren.

To me Terry is the perfect successor to take on the legacy of the Batman, unlike dick , Tim or Damian they want to escape from Bruce’s shadow and become there own persons but Terry wants to become Batman to make up for his past mistakes and show Gotham that batman is not just in the past but is needed now more than ever .
