- i know alot of you guys are looking at buying a 740 or 940 so i figured id make a video listing some things to look for when inspecting and test driving a car.
forgot to note that pre 1988 cars had bad wiring harness insulation and the insulation would start to degrade from the heat in the engine bay , causing wires to short out, so make sure to check the wiring harness for the injectors !

How’s going. I’m buying soon my first car 740 or 940
I watched this video before buying my 740, and it definitely helped me find the important stuff! I, of course, overlooked a few things being a complete car rookie, but FINALLY we're about to get inspected and back on the road! She's a gold N/A wagon with a super clean interior, 200k miles. Do you have any tips for preventative maintenance that I can do before I start the daily commute?
Other common issues with 940's are like leaky heater core or heater package, if you got a sunroof the seals around it are common to disintegrate and let water in, ac stop working if you got ECC.
Dieseltrallan you're right.. I totally forgot about that! like 7 of the 740s I've owned had the heater core blow

It doesn't have seals, It drains to tubes

Wow. I love 740’s but probably my fav boxy car of all time gotta be an e30. So that’s fair. But if you ever want a cheap RWD turbo brick, 740/940 Volvo is the way to go 🙌🏽
Checking in with my 1992 740 wagon with 420K miles. It’s my daily driver and vacation cruiser. Paint and body in great shape interior is good also. Been in family since new no rebuilding of engine or transmission in fact the valve cover has never been removed. These cars will outlast any Asian car with proper care and maintenance.
I had a 90 Vulva 740GL, it was burgundy and had seat warners. A fishing reel sunroof, a white knuckle torque monster 2.3 liter non-turbo model, speed demon. It had 280,000 miles and the transmission snapped off on the interstate, and the headliner was flapping in the wind, I could drift it on wet pavement
There’d this nice one in the local Walmart parking lot for 600. The car has minor cosmetic and the inside was clean. I’m thinking of calling the guy and getting it for my secondary car.

Nice video man. I'm only the second owner of my turbo 745. he not only had a folder FULL of receipts since new, but also built his own digital document of all components replaced, dates, and mileage. even tracked every single oil change in his document that he sent me. It was so well taken care of!

Old Volvos pretty much only leak oil because people don't replace the oil separator box every 100K miles and clean the flame trap annually. They clog up with oily gunk and the crankcase pressure builds up and blows out the camshaft seals, and makes the rear main seal leak forever. When that oil gets into the wiring loom to the alternator under the front of the engine, it accelerates the 1980-1988 wiring insulation degradation. Best case, your battery keeps draining and your engine dies. Worst case, your car burns to the ground. DO NOT buy a Volvo if you want something to neglect and beat on like a Honda - these cars will last 600K miles or longer with a very involved maintenance schedule, or self-destruct horribly at 120K miles if not. And DON'T just buy one to slam it on its nuts and drop a V8 in it.
Volvo 2 and 7 series' worst faults are these - bad wiring and clogged crankcase breather assembly. Suspension bushings, sacrificial engine mounts, rear window seals and odometers too. Owning these cars is an investment, but it is SO worth it.

Start looking. Once you start you will see more but there aren’t a lot

Could potentially be purchasing a 88 740 (b230FT), auto. Would love to purchase a m46 or m47 for a manual swap and just wondering: A) help a brother out? & B) am I getting myself into a huge project? He said he wants 1100 for the car, there’s piston slap (not 100% sure if that’s the issue or if it’s something else) and transmission doesn’t like to come out of first when it’s cold. I’m in BC aswell, get back to me if you can
I have a chance to get a '86 2.0 turbo for cheap, in a pretty good condition. I like the looks and the quirks of the bricks, and i always though they had something special about them, some character or something, that give you joy when you drive them.
Please help me pull the trigger on this one, as i have never had a lolvo before, and i would like to have one, im just concerned about their acceleration and speed (i hope they arent too sluggish), Thanks!
What's the choice model I should look for? I seen some with bigger inline engines with a fat turbo, which ones are those. I never thought much about Volvos, but they look like a lot of fun, I know they're usually cheap.

I bought my 740 for $300. Spent a day making some minor repairs and now drive it daily. We plan on making a 5K mile round trip in the summer. I have no worries driving my $300 Volvo. Great cars!!
A good engine choice is b230fk, it's light pressure turbo but is exactly the same engine as a full pressure turbo except the wastegateclock is different, very easy to swap or mod if you want or even more easy ways to have more boost but best is to buy a new wastegateclock, the b230fk is very common in any 940 series from 94-98 model names on 940s wlth the engine is (S2.3/SE2.3 or classic which is the last 940 model ever made in 98)
So I've had my 91 245 for a while and I'm starting to ache for a little more speed out of it. Do you think my motor with 270,000 miles (435000 kms) on it would get a lot of blow by if I were to +T it? it burns about half a quart every 3000 miles (between oil changes) so I'd say it's pretty healthy but it's still a 270000 mile motor
Adjustable Creep the motor could very well be quite healthy , if thinking about doing a turbo conversion on that motor. just do a compression test before making any desicions , it's a very easy thing to do and tells you alot about your motor

Should've watched his video before buying my volvo lol it leaks oil but I plan to get the head gasket kit, my other main issue is the starter, which is a huge pain to remove the top bolt. Car starts sometimes, other times I need a jump and other times a jump doesn't work
Have u considered trying out one of Volvos rwd 6 cylinders? A 960, s90, or v90? They aren't turbo, and they also didn't import any with manual transmissions in the USA or Canada, but they have 190-200hp stock. My daily driver is a 95 960 wagon and I love it.

I have a 940 wagon and try to keep everything up to date but the leaves I don't know how to get them out
Check those for rust, i bought mine for way to much and later on i checked some standard rust points I didnt knew before, especially the engine bay the longitudinal beams, and unter youre drivers and passengers floor the longitudinal beams and the floor panels. Mine rustet through the enginebay into the wheel housing pretty much, you can look into my channel to see a Video of it.

EphyLegends I'm in chilliwack BC ! a fair price for a 740 or 940 turbo is from 700-1600 and a good price for a non turbo model is worth 200-1000 IMO

hey kolton, on my also gold 90 740 with the Regina fuel system, when I changed the gears (park to reverse, to drive, etc) the idle bucks/sputters for a second, but then idles back normal right after and never stalls. any ideas? I thought the timing was off but I just had the belt done and it still does it. I also changed the plug wires and plugs. only thing I didn't change was the distributor, cap and rotor. looking forward to more videos of your new 740 :) cheers
I bought a Volvo 744 GLT -88 for 300€ (~300$) and have got an offer to buy another Volvo 744 GLE for 50€😂 so you can get them pretty cheap (in Finland)
Maybe if you know the right people... The prices are really high for the popular ones.
Volvo Sebbe you're just lucky 😂 if you look online for rwd volvos for sale in finland anything under 300€ is usually a rusty parts car missing the drivetrain 😂

do they have a funny IAC (Idle air control) function, this guy deleted his and other 740 i looked a had a ball valve to bring idle down.

Check under the door mats if the floor is wet the heater element is broken then.. its a pain in the ass to change that on a volvo 700/900
found that problem last week on my 940..

winracso on the newer ones the ac clutch needs to be shimmed ..... A buddy of mine had it done to his as it would seem like hes running out of refrigerant half way when ac is on..... Eventhough the system is full and not leaking.not sure if its the same with older models

CK BMX pcv box could be done and need replacement .... Check that..... Symptoms is whining at times..... Check your belts and pulleys too :)
